Message:

Lothruin is our moderator who knows more about copyrights than anyone, and here's what she had to say:

Recipes are actually kind of weird. From the copyright office:

Quote
A mere listing of ingredients is not protected under copyright law. However, where a recipe or formula is accompanied by substantial literary expression in the form of an explanation or directions, or when there is a collection of recipes as in a cookbook, there may be a basis for copyright protection.

Basically, recipes aren't copyrightable, but their instructions might be. Emphasis on might. It depends on the format, I think. However, it is VERY important that the Craftster know that online recipes are likely to contain the same copyright protection, such as it is, as any recipes found in books. In other words, just because it is "free on the net" doesn't mean it's not copyrighted, as much as it is possible to copyright any recipe, which is less than other things. lol Like I said, recipes are weird.

So, for the posting recipes in thread, I would say, they should find a link, just like when my knitters want to post a pattern they like. If they can't find a link to the actual pattern, then we request they list the source material, but not the actual pattern.

But for the guidelines for source material for the actual cookbooks... All the recipes on FoodNetwork actually have a copyright notice. The best source is going to be old cookbooks or family recipes. There's really no way around that. I don't know what limited rights are granted to users on the recipe websites, but theoretically they have the right to print off at least one copy of a recipe for personal use, and if they choose to make a scrap cookbook for someone else out of that copy of the recipe, then I suspect that would fall under fair use. But she would probably want to research the specific rights granted by each specific website, because they'll all be a little different.

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

Oooh, with school starting up, I wasn't sure I'd have time, but if it's just three recipes ... I could handle that (and the shipping would be super cheap too!)

I was inspired by this swap; just tried out bread pudding crockpot recipe I found in an old cookbook and I get to have it for dessert tonight. Woot!

Bread + Pudding + Crockpot = equation for awesomeness

Sounds fun, but not sure I have a ton of crockpot recipes that I've actually used before. What the heck do I usually make in that thing?? ;D

If you're anything like me, you probably have two or three things that you make and that's it.  I use my crockpot for turkey/salsa dip, a cheater's version of beef stroganoff ( how the heck do you spell that?), and to throw a pork roast in occasionally.

Would it be cheating in the very worst way to ask my friend who uses her crockpot at least once weekly to provide me with a few of her favorites and use those?

I vote it's not cheating... but my vote doesn't count as I forgot to get my voter's registration card.

If you ask her now, you should have time to test them out before send-outs! ;)

I was going to give up on swapping for a while (at least until I've dealt with some of my own projects...) but I've been trying to collect crock pot recipes, so here I am...

When we did the recipe swap, we posted a list of the recipe titles that we recieved and if you did make any of them we also posted a picture of the finished product. There was also a second round of swapping where some people requested copies of recipes listed in the gallery. It worked really well.

Here is a like to the gallery from the last swap:
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=348724.0 (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=348724.0)

I agree that since there are probably some very tried and tested recipes used for crockpots in most households that there may be some double ups. But when I'm trying out a new recipe, I like to view several different versions of a dish before I start and use ingredients / techniques taken from several recipes when I'm making my dish. Maybe we will recieve different variations and maybe even improve and renew your excitement for a recipe you have made for years.

We also have a sizeable group from Down Under, enough to make their own group.  ;D

So this may be a silly question but are people doing three separate recipes for each partner or a variation of that. Is there a requirement like one group has to have a different set from you than another. Just want to make sure I know what I am doing...:) like I ever know that...but I do try.

Pez, it's up to you if you want to sent different recipes to each person in your group. I usually come up with a set of recipes that I want to send before this type of swap and then make changes based on individual group member's dietary restrictions if needed. :)

There is nothing better then flipping through cookbooks! My mum started me off on a habit of writing next to the recipe the date we made it and the reactions of those who were eating it as well as noting any changes we made (or thought we should make next time) it's like a walk down memory lane!

I've got all my recipes chosen, now I just need to write them down and send them!
Now if you excuse me I have to go attend to my soup that's cooking away in my crock pot  ;D

ok, I have been getting my recipes ready to go. I'm mostly in the gathering stage. My recipes tend to be convenience, which doesn't always go along with some of my partners requests. What I plan to do, and I am not trying to aggravate anyone, but I am going to send my recipes as is. Then if someone wants to substitute fresh tomatoes for a can or something like that they can make their own personal substitutions. It's what I do with recipes all the time, but usually I'm just looking for what is in the cabinet so I don't have to stop at the grocery.  ;D
