Title: watercolor/charcoal triptych
Post by: lunamadre on August 14, 2010 11:53:42 AM
I made these when I wanted something soothing and simple to hang on our walls...this is in our entry way.  I used watercolors first and then drew on top with charcoal, and sprayed with a final fixative when done.  I've been watching a lot of Nick Jr. with my son, and the dandelion fields on Ni Hao Kai Lan must have influenced my subconscious...lol

That's really really pretty :D
So simple but so gorgeous and you can tell what it's meant to be!
I love mixed media, but have never thought about using charcoal and watercolour as the base, awesome ;D

Yeah, it's the first time I tried it too, and I really like the effect I got.  I waited until the watercolor dried (which doesn't take very long anyway) before I started with some vine charcoal and compressed charcoal.  I blew the dust away instead of brushing it away so it wouldn't smear, and some of it clung to the painting and created these little specks that I liked.  I did go back and add more watercolor after the charcoal, so the water kind of blended with the charcoal in areas and created a neat effect.  You definitely need to use a good fixative afterward, it sets the charcoal and gave the whole surface a nice sheen, and I think it kind of "unified" the two mediums.
