this one sounds fun... my only concern is the crafting time...with only two and a half weeks and the the kids going back to school in the middle ......It could be a bit tight to get a poppet and an outfit/costume done.....will have to think about it.....still have a while for signups

Im going to have to agree with this one.  craft time is really short considering it's right in the middle of the start of school. (boo! btw) i'm gonna have to really think about it.  i really want to do this but i don't think i can pull it...start of school year usually means i'm at work for 10+ hours every day plus i'm going back to school this semester...

*ugh* thinking very hard about if i can pull it off decently...

I can move the send out date to the first week of October if that helps. I'm a teacher and a grad student and I didn't even consider the dates - whoops.

lol i love you.  yes please.  =)

Also if you don't mind me asking, what are you in school for?  I'm going back to get my M.Ed in Gifted and Talented Education.  But i'm taking the year off from teaching....

I was going for a Masters in Elem. Ed, but I had kind of a crazy year last year, and I took one semester off and now I don't know what I want to do. I am taking an on-line writing class and an in-person writing class and maybe that will help focus me or redirect me. I've been a teacher for 20+ years and I thought it was time to try something else but I love what I do so where would I go?

Oh i see.  I taught for a semester last year (graduated with my BA in December) at my local high school and realized that i don't feel comfortable taking time off from my own studies.  I really got into my work with the kids (i was teaching Health/Sex Ed) and didn't have any time to do anything else.  When i decided to go back to school, i figured my best bet would be to just go back to school and focus on that since i tend to be very one-track minded.  Hopefully, it won't take me longer than 2 years to finish my masters and then off to get my PhD.  i'll go back to the classroom while i'm working on my phD. But i also think i may re-certify in elementary education instead of secondary.

The little ones are a lot easier to deal with.  i'm not good with my kids coming to me and asking questions like "is there a way i can get condoms for free somewhere?" or "miss would you like to go to a kegger with us?"

Anyway, just to get the topic back on the swap, I think i'm going to go ahead and sign up for the swap even if the send-out date doesn't change.  I think that the week before school starts should be enough time for me to get something made well enough that all i have left are the little things after school starts...

I agree about the sendout date.  We had more than a month for the dotees.  Plushies/stuffies/amis  are bigger and will take more time.

I changed the send-out date to October 8 - and I see that it orginally read "9/2/10". I meant it to say 9/24/10 so now I understand why you were all freaking out. Just a bad typist.

Hope this entices more of you to join!

quick question- how large is the plushie supposed to be?

Post by: Smmarrt on August 06, 2010 11:28:23 AM
I'd say 5" - 12", so most of us can send in a bubble envelope for inexpensive postage...I hope that doesn't limit anyone.

Post by: mamarose22 on August 06, 2010 02:06:28 PM
I don't think a bubble envelope might work in most cases.  Stufies are 3-D and usually have some girth.  but this size wouldn't come to too much postage when mailed in a lightweight box like a shoebox.

A poppet would not fit into a bubble envie.  I am not sure that a poppet would be a fair trade for a plushie or ami that was only 5".

i agree, i rekon a poppet for a poppet, or what was dpone in the poppet/amiguri swap - a clothed poppet for i think it was one large and one medium amiguri, or something along those lines.

ive decided im going to join, sending my questionare in a few minute, im going to have a week off work so ill be able to do this swap, but id rather not make a poppet, as im a bit poppeted out , but i could offer a punkin if asked, just need to figure out clothing as i havent seen any clothing patterns on here for punkin yet :)

I'd be more than happy to make a couple of ami in return for a poppet- the reason I asked about size is because while I'm a confident crocheter, i find it hard to 'scale up'  (never was any good at maths!) so if I find a pattern for a 5 inch ami, while I can accessorise it with clothes and hair and even jewellry, it's still gonna be 5 inches high.

I just mailed off to amis, both were about 14" tall and I used one of the big bubble envelopes I got at the PO, so you can use envelopes!  I'm really seriously thinking about joining this one, I would make amis, but I would be willing to make a couple for one sewn one. ;D

If anyone wants to do more and receive more than the requirements, you should work this out with your partner.  The idea is not to make this too big a swap.  A plushie/stuffie is enough of a challenge if it is themed to a particular character of your partner's choosing.

I'm seriously thinking about this one!! I love making poppets but I'm also crazy about crocheting cartoon characters. Would love to get a poppet in exchange especially if someone was willing to attempt a "Jacob" poppet. I only have one poppet that's crafted by someone for me.  My character crochet are 12 inches and up. I always send priority mail. I can get a lot in the shoebox size and it only cost me a little under$11.00 for shipping with delivery confirmation which was only two dollars more than my last partner spent shipping to me. I get antsy waiting for my packages to arrive, worrying whether my partner will like what I crafted for her or not. So I want it to hurry hurry!! I have a week to decide to sign up. It is sad that with over 200,000 members we get so few members to swap or even comment on topics

I think postage is a big issue for some swappers - as well as the exchange part. I sew and I can spend hours decorating or embellishing something and that makes me happy. I don't always know going in to a project how long it's going to take me. And then if I receive something that looks like it took 5 minutes and is poorly made, an experience I've only had once or twice on Craftster, you know, it sucks. So maybe some folks are hesitant because of the time committment, the postage and the disappointment factor.

Also, I like no-point swaps. Crochet maybe easy for you and it may take you only an hour or two to make something truly fabulous and for that I would be thrilled to receive because it is something I can't make. annachronism sent me a FABULOUS Nessy plushie in the USA/UK swap a few months back, and all the kids and some of the parents at my school just love her, as do I. I don't know if it took her an hour or a week but it well made and cute. I totally appreciate it.

So just to be clear - we are swapping one plushie or stuffie - whether it is made from fabric, yarn or whatever. Each swapper is trying to make something to make their partner squeal with delight because it looks like xxx and will make the receiver smile each time she looks at it. Some stuffies will take a few hours and some will take longer to complete. But it is the "wow" factor we are all hoping to achieve.

I don't know much about poppets except that I look at them here on Craftster and think "wow, how did they do that" so if you receive one, that is one special partner. I think I had stuffed animals and sewn stuffed dolls when I jumped into this.

I just joined and I'm very excited about this swap! I love stuffies/amigurumis of all kinds. Seriously, you should see my collection of all things stuffed. It's insane! My kids have begun to follow in my footsteps, too.  :D :D

I think for super detailed things, it's best for them to be big (at least in crochet). If you're going to crochet lots of different pieces or clothes to make the character look like it should, it's hard to fit all that in a 5 inch space! I usually like to make my ami's at least 12 inches or so. That's not saying that I wouldn't enjoy an adorable 5 inch stuffie, though! I think as long as it's made with lots of love, it will be great!

Hmmm....this one sounds good but I'm not sure how good I'd be at making a person character. Cartoon charater for sure. Plus I don't know what character's I'd put. Could it be really general like zombie? Oh, I'd really like a Frankenstein. Gonna have to think about it a bit, but I imagine I'll probably sign up.

I just added everyone officially so please check your profiles to see if the swap is added. I sometimes spellcheck people's Craftster names subconsciously and add phantom crafty people. Thanks to all who have joined...

And I must apologize - my internet at home goes in and out - alot. I pay alot of money and you'd think it'd be 24/7 but no such luck. During the week, it's easier because I'm on my laptop at work with wireless. But at home, I don't know why it doesn't work as well. Anyway, I will add more links to the post above.

I just sent in my questionnaire.   I noticed that there was no question about allergies on this one.  I'm not allergic to anything, but I have cats and don't want to be paired with someone that has allergies to cats.  I also prefer my stuff not to smell like smoke.  Maybe that question should be added to the questionnaire for the people that haven't sent one in yet?

Yeah, sorry forgot to add that. If anyone has allergies or extreme aversions to stuff (pet hair, smoke) please PM me. I'll add it to your info when I make partners.

Also, you can request a partner, also called self-partnering, (hint, hint belly jewel and petskin) - email each other first and set the ground rules. Then let me know. For the most part now, all the USA swappers only want to swap within the USA. So double-check each person's location before you jump into a partnership.

And all the regular Swap Rules apply - even if you meet for lunch and swap that way. Post photos, PM me and sender, et cetera.

Any questions?

I also don't have allergies (except to seasonal hayfever) but I would not like my stuffie/plushie smelling from smoke or anything else. .  I was in a swap on another site where my partner had pet rabbits.  It was a kitchen swap consisting of some crocheted pot holders, placemats, scrubbies etc made out of cotton.  Well I had to wash everything first.  Everything was well crocheted but she must have let her pets run rampant and sit on the yarns because the smell was so bad.

I don't mind if the swapper smokes, just not around the items she crafts. My bf sister and boyfriend like chain smoke so I won't craft around them anymore because my one yarn smells so bad, hopefully it will come out in the wash or febreeze.  :-\

I'm impatient as well! I am going to a baseball game on Saturday afternoon (Go Giants!) so I will make partners around dinner time and list/post them by 8 pm California time? I'll put a note on the title post that sign-ups are closing at 6 or 7 pm.

Um, I mean Sunday. You see I teach in a year-round preschool and we're done in 5 days and I'm so tired that I can't remember what day it is or was. I mean Sunday evening I will post partners.

And yes, petskin and bellyjewel can be partners. Yay.

So, I have a question . . . we filled out the questionarre about our favorite characters and whatnot, so are we going to get that list from our partner in a PM? Or do I have to go stalk her to get her list? :P

I just sent each swapper a Personal Message with both partners' questionnaires included. You read the email and you can stalk - whichever way works best for you.

Have fun all and thanks for joining. I'm on vacation for 2 weeks at the end of August so I may start then!

Okay so I just stalked my awesome partner The Trickster and I loved her list and it was hard to narrow down her options because I wanted to craft over half of them for her. But I finally made a decision and all I have to say is thank God send out aren't until October.

Hey wanna know what else I got yesterday?  THIS!!!

Isn't she a sweetie?!?!She came with the name Tiger. I told my kids they could change it, but they seem to like it.  It suits her I think, but I'd kinda want something a little more girly being that shes my only girl now!!

My partner has a fabulous character list, she made it really easy to choose one. :P This is going to be, by far, the most complicated amigurumi I have ever attempted. I'm even doing it without a pattern. OH SNAP.

The size was 5"-12", right? Because, based on what parts I have already made, mine is going to come out about 10" tall I think.

And I haven't started anything yet - 2 more work/cleaning days at school and then two sweet weeks off! And the sun finally arrived in San Francisco - hooray for Vitamin D!

Oh, and I am taking a stuffie-making class on Thursday night. I am experienced but I hope to learn some new tricks/methods for ears, underarms and crotches - you know, so they don't bunch up when sewing!

Need to go to JoAnns in the next couple of days. Project should go fast once I get supplies. You would think I'd have what I needed with the fabric I have. I could almost open my own store. I have my stash, my mother in laws, and 5 other ladies who have passed on. Maybe I should join a swap, where my partner would make things for me and I send fabric and yarn, is there such a thing? Most of my fabrics are OOP childrens and americana.
I wish I could take a class for feet! Don't know why they are so hard for me and shoes too.

I've only ever made plushies that I sort of make up as I go along, which always leads to a bit of screaming and crying when it goes wrong ;D I'm slowly working up the courage to request the poppet pattern...

I'm slowly trying to convince the others that we need to stock books like creepy cute crochet, crobots, and anyting by aranzi aronzo...no luck yet :( I haven't actually thought to look for books on toymaking- normally I just type in 'plush', or 'cuddly', or 'amigurumi'- I'll search the catalogue tomorrow!

Yesterday was such a long crappy day. I started my internship as a secretary, I answered phones, took orders, took money, answered questions, and filed, all at the same time right before I was off so I had to work 25 minutes over my shift. There were other many many crappy things that added to that, so when I got home I was like "I'll just go home and sew for the plushie swap." Except half of what I had sewn was wrong (inside out), so I have to rip out my stitches turn it inside out and resew.  :-\

I finally learned how to correctly do a satin stitch on the machine and in the close-up, you can see I satin stiched his whole face. Love that unibrow!

I learned some new tricks and will be able to apply them to TheSavoyTruffle's favorite character. Now will I make ____________ or _________________ ? We'll see.

I don't think I ever used my zig-zagger to applique anything on any of my stuffies.  I don't think I will be doing that on the one I will be making for this swap, but it's something I might consider in the future.
I have zig-zagged appliques on my children's clothes when they were little.  When I would hem a pair of pants for my daughter I would cut out petal shapes from the cut off part of the pants and arrange them in the center of a solid shirt to create a flower and zig-zag them on.  This way it would look like a coordinated outfit.

Back from my mini-vacation in San Diego. Looking forward to a loooong weekend of sewing and trying to make a stuffie for my partner. I am going to leave the robot I made as a Toy Society drop. (If you don't know about it, go to www.thetoysociety.blogspot.com and read all about it.)

Happy Labor Day all and have fun stuffie-making!

I love the toy society idea :) - i`ve been lurking on their web site for a while, but haven`t made anything for it yet (near future, tho)- i just wanted to be able to drop it in a nice location, where people, who would appreciate it (give it to kids) would find it. now i`m gonna be near nice parks and all, so it`ll be easy.

as for the swap, my items are finished and i i`ll try to send out this week

I just started going through my patterns to see if I have anything suitable.  I will also check to see if there is anything on line.  I might have to improvise a little.  I'll see.

I'm also ready to get busy with this - I have too many ideas. But I'm going to try one tonight and if it works in a small size, then I can definitely make it bigger.

By the way, I LOVE my new sewing machine. So quiet, so smooth, so able to sew big fat fleece. I just need to learn how to sew knits and I'll be a stuffie-making Queen!

Sewhappysue, you are the Master of Poppetmakers!

I messed up my stuffie and tried to replace a particular fabric I had used on part of it but it is no longer available.  That part fortunately wasn't messed up so I think I can salvage it by doing the other part over.  Hope it works.

The high heat in Los Angeles (and I guess surrounding areas) was all over the news this morning.  I can imagine how that can interfere with your crafting.  We had an extremely hot summer on the east coast.  This summer beat previous records.  I'm hoping that this winter won't bring extreme cold and or snow also.  The worst thing is the snow.  When it gets too cold it gets too icy and you can't go shopping for craft stuff.
I got to mail off my package to SMLounsbury today.  Gotta go and PM her and Smmarrt 'bout it.

I have the character over half way done, however I have a economics test on friday, a project due next week, another test next wednesday, and another project due next wednesday. I have never used this pattern before which is why it is taking me so long and I don't want to sendout late since I had so much time to craft, but I also don't want to rush my partners doll. ??? Lets just see how this week goes before I make up my mind. The doll is turning out great though.  :-\

I'm still around.  I forgot that I had it shipped to the PO Box and I haven't been able to get over there.  It was birthday party day on Saturday when it was delivered and today it's far too cold and rainy to take my one year old out.  Hopefully I'll get it either when my hubby gets home or tomorrow when the rain subsides.

I'm finishing up today and shipping tomorrow.

this could have been written by me  :-\ ! only instead of exams of my own, i've been helping my fiancÚ prepare for his selection course for the british army- lots of cooking steaks (NOT pleasant for a veggie like myself!!), ordering maths and physics textbooks from the library on my lunchbreaks (i work there, so it's not much of a chore, but i usually use that time to crochet!) memorizing facts and figures myself so i can test him properly, and of course staying up long into the night trying to reassure the poor chap that whatever happens, it's all going to work out ok  :-\

i'll know by thursday if i'm going to be able to send or not, so i'll keep everybody updated.

I lost my yarn needle the other day so I had a huuuge setback in attaching limbs.  However a quick trip to Walmart last night solved that problem.  I'm hoping to get out either this afternoon or tomorrow morning to ship.  I'm so very happy with how he came out.  My kids did not know who this particular character was, so I made him first and then showed the kids the picture online after he was done.  My very critical eight year old son (the one who tells me it's okay to have gray hair because I'm getting old; I'm 29!) told me that he looks perfect.  So, I am hoping it will be well received because I am incredibly proud of this little guy.

I should be good to send tomorrow.  I have to finish a shirt (which should take me one hour tops), and then an extra.  I'm liking how this character is turning out.  I'm not sure I want to mail it out! ;)

I received today from sewhappysue. I got a Laura Ingalls Wilder poppet, and it absolutely rocks! I don't have a camera, so hopefully she can post pictures, but I absolutely love it! Beautiful!

I'm a bad, bad organizer. I'm not finished and I have school tonight. So I will be sending on Saturday morning.

Thanks for all the messages here but it is easier to keep track of comings and goings if you PM me.
I will update the list on the first page of the gallery thread tomorrow.

When I originally posted that, I actually did put him/her in the post (whichever is correct...), but realized that it would give you a clue, so I quickly changed it to "it".
