Title: Thrift store picture revamp -before & after
Post by: norsgoebel on May 12, 2005 02:10:47 PM

Okay, I felt like being a real go-getter today so I went and got us a gallery for our art.  Here is the beeeyoootiful painting Poppet sent me.  I think it is early 60's post modern neo classical baroque paint by number.  But I may be wrong.

Here's the one norsgoebel sent me. I wasn't sure where to start with this, so she suggested I start at the beginning. If you take into consideration that I live in Kansas, and our state is in the middle of debating the theory of evolution, you can see why I'm just not sure what to do.  :-*

oh man, with the sheet hanging in the background, this is giving me nightmares from my drawing & painting I class, drawing random objects and having to laboriously shade everything in, including the sheet backdrop.

Ahhh I see your dilemma...the chicken or the egg?  the big bang or the big guy?  the crawling from the slime or created from the rib?  I didn't mean to shake your moral foundation, I just wanted you to have a little fun!

And here is what she sent to me! It is a fabric panel, stretched & mounted!
I keep seeing all sorts of craziness...

It's so odd, I may have fallen in love with it.

You guys clearly have much better thrift shops than we have around here.  Ours are sort of the type of place where no one seems to know the difference between donated stuff and garbage and you really don't want to even touch anything, much less take it home  :P

I actually had to google that. Ah, good times.
Anyway, I am intrigued by this swap. My bedroom is looking a little bland and artless, and I may have to draw inspiration from this thread, and have a fewridiculous altered paintings on my wall.
Yes, sounds like a plan.

I got my picture back from Poppet today.  It is so wonderful.  I promise to post pics tomorrow, It is hung in a place of prominence and I am drinking it all in. Tomorrow there will be the first before AND after of this wondrous swap.  I think this has been the most fun swap I have been in, I wanna do round 2 too!

Yeah! (clapping and jumping up and down)

I think I've been a little too swap-obsessed lately. I had a dream last night that I had a mailbox full of packages when i got home and even had to hold some in my teeth when I opened my door. Then, I was opening my thrift store swap "after" box and couldn't see the picture because glitter was just sprinkling everywhere.

If you need me, I'll be in rehab...

Title: Re: Thrift store picture revamp -before & after
Post by: norsgoebel on May 19, 2005 04:50:48 PM
It is a mirror in place of the face and then the stars that are surrounding the picture are different religious images, some Buddha, some iconsand a picture of the earth from space. Here's the passage:

When you go out into space, what you are carrying is your body and it hasn't been transformed, space won't transform you.  But thinking about space may help you to realize something.  There's a two page spread in a world atlas which shows our galaxy within many galaxies and within our galaxy the solar system.  And here you get a sense of the magnitude of this space that we're now finding out about...Billions upon billions of roaring thermonuclear furnaces scattering from each other.  Each thermonuclear furnace a star and our sun among them...and then from still more remote distances beyond all these there come murmurs, microwaves that are the echoes of the greatest cataclysmic explosion of all, namely;y the big bang of creation which according to some reckonings may have occurred some 18 billion years ago...That's where we are kiddo, and to realize that, you realize how really important you are, you know- one little microbit in that great magnitude begins here.
Joseph Campbell

Poppet, did you find the quote first and then embellish the picture or vice versa?

Title: Re: Thrift store picture revamp -before & after
Post by: poppet on May 20, 2005 10:18:21 AM
Yeah! I'm glad you like it.

The quote is from The Power of Myth, by Joseph Campbell (great book). A friend bought me that book when I told him my struggle with religion (I'm undecided, I guess) and trying to give my daughter answers to her questions about it all. I highly recommend this book, which is based on a tv series with the same title (you can get the dvds or videos from the library). Joseph Campbell was a scholar and the book is full of facinating information about various religions and myths and their importance in society.

It was a long quote so I left out a few sentences (hence the "..."). The last line on the pic is actually "That's where we are kiddo, and to realize that, you realize how really important you are, you know- one little microbit in that great magnitude... It begins here."

You said to start at the beginning, so that's what I was going for.  :-*

Anyway, I wanted to turn it into a spiritual pic rather than a strictly Christian concept. And the little boy's face wasn't doing much for me, so I thought a mirror would be a good fit. I stared at that picture for days and really struggled with this project. I did the quote first and the rest around it.

But the good news is, I found a super-fab pic at a thrift store today, so bring on round #2.

ohmygawdohmygawdohmygawd! I got my pic back from norsgoebel today, and I don't know how she mustered the strength to part with it. Unbelievable, seriously. With monkeys and lights and all. I'm dying to post pics but I can't do so until i get to work in the morning. (norsgoebel -- if you have pics, though, feel free to post them for me 2night). I took a bunch of shots and will download them in the morning, but no matter what I do, I can't capture it's coolness on my camera. I may have to rearrange my entire livingroom around it, for real. Norsgoebel is my crafty hero.  :-*

Norsgoebel, the Christmas lights are....brilliant! (Bad pun, I know. Somebody slap me.) Thanks to the little birdy that pointed them out to me.  At first glance, I thought it was just really bright paint.

Yeah, I'm yet another lurker.  Just thought I'd tell all of you how incredibly awesome you are.  I always see these horrible (er, beautiful?) pictures in thrift stores and think, that has so much potential, but I wouldn't even know where to start....

Which makes this swap amazing and the finished pictures are fabulous.  I discovered craftster two weeks ago and now I spend way too much time rummaging through the old posts and being amazed.  Yay!

thats awesome!!! i have a question though norsgoebel....how did you mail that? like what do you put it in?

I wrapped it up in a bunch of bubble wrap and put it in a cardboard box that I had cut down to fit it.  I was worried that the lights might break or the batteries might leak but crossed my fingers and mailed it off

Ahh.. stop teasing me!  Unfortunately, I just completed my first swap ever (which was totalllly awesome!! https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=34104.0)  I am not quite sure I am comfortable enough to organize just yet *cowers in embarassment & shame*

So Chibiichan got hers today & now I can post pics!!!

This is what she sent me:

This is what I sent back to her:

A close up:

The idea came to me when I was on a fashion website with models wearing "Jesus is my homeboy" t-shirts. I thought he needed a good reason to be with his crew.

The quote is from Leonard Bernstein & says"Music can name the unnamable and communicate the unknowable". It seemed very fitting.

The background is all scraps of fabric that I sewed together & painted over to bring it together. The dancing people are all random pics of people I know or from old magazines.

I'm so glad you like it Channon!!! I can't wait to hear what everyone else thinks!!

oh lordy, worthwhilegirl! (lame reference intended) thats absolutely incredible. i hate getting hopes up by posting a pic that isnt a finished product, but i was lost in the trauma of moving from dorm back home for the summer, so i never had a chance (or the cables!) to post goldfinch's original painting as she was so kind to do for me. its a print on paper, of what my sister says looks like a nazi christmas card. it doesnt look much like that now, but im still in the process of altering, as ive already apoligized for, and it should be on its way soon!

Here's what I did for Emerald:

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Left Side:

Right Side:

I tried to compliment the existing picture, as well as reflect on the Victorian era.  I used a key cabinet from IKEA, took off the door and painted and embellished it to my heart's content.  The image of the woman on the left side is actually a picture of the artist who painted the original painting.  The typing in the bottom left corner of the box is a definition of the Impressionist movement - which this painting is from.

Emerald sent me an AWESOME picture too!  I'll post before and after's tommorow.

worthwhilegirl: As I was flicking through the pages of American Photo, I saw another last supper inspired photo that reminded me of your revamp. All of the apostles and Jesus were "homeboys" and drinking wine coolers.  :D  It's a fantastic photo by David LaChapelle. . If you get a chance you should definitely pick up American Photo and check it out.  ;D

I'm fascinated by all the different approaches - some people let a lot of the original picture show through; others use the original as a starting point and create something completely separate.  GREAT JOB, all!  I hope Leah will make this into a Craft Challenge!

Sorry for the belated response. I am the lucky recipient of the FAB Shirley. She has brought in MANY compliments and has even inspired a "pirate corner" in my home. I must say that I was upscaled on this project, but I had a lot of fun and I know I'm the envy of craftsterbators at the moment. She's mine so "hands off me booty!"

I have the little sad cat surrounded by garbage also.  I grew up looking at this pic hanging by my bed and feeling so sorry for the little kitty that i have it to this day.  Many years have gone by but we have stayed together! haha
now I'm thinking he needs a revamp to spruce up his environment a little bit.
You people are all so talented and open.  It's hard to share yourself with others and yet you all do it in these swaps by creating things for each other.

Another lurker here...

Everyone's picture came out so amazing!  I could never be that creative with those pictures.  Shirley is absolutely amazing, as is the Zeus one.  And I like the flowery one too.  Aaah!  I love them all!  Great job everyone!

now that its all over, ive finally gotten my act together. yes, i know. i am a failure. my partner's went out today, and i have a picture but i dont want to post it so itll be a surprise. i received hers ON TIME because she does not suck like me, but as she forgot to take a picture, my delinquent self was left to it and ive only done it now. so here is what goldfinch sent to me. its absolutely amazing. somehow, both our pictures ended up having what i interpret as a wartime theme, or maybe thats just how i see it because i am le crazy. i guess thats what art's for. at least. whenever she gets hers, she or i can post my final product.

kisses!
