Title: Clever watering can, includes recycling!
Post by: Bourgeois on June 13, 2010 07:49:25 PM
I had been hanging onto this last empty bottle of laundry detergent for a fun craft project and I finally got around to doing something with it.

I decided to make it into a watering can, but I wanted it to be cuter.  So clearly, I first gave it a good rinsing.  Then I used that blue painters tape and cut out a floral type design.

Then I gave it a good spraying with some brown spray paint.

I decided not to paint the blue top because it was a nice color to begin with and gives a nice contrast.  I just used a hammer and nail to puncture holes into the top.

I like the part on the back that shows how much liquid is in it, so I saved that.

And it actually works rather well!

Hey thanks everybody!

Actually the painters tape was pretty easy to work with.  I did not actually draw out the design ahead of time, I just started cutting and sticking it on there.  I don't think much skill was really involved, just cutting some squiggly lines and some leaf shapes.

I think doing a standard polka dot one would be super cute.  Maybe using different size circles.

That's really clever!! I've been needing a good one for my garden but I'm too cheap to pay for one. I've been using bowls  :P  Now I think I'll have to make me a cute one. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

That looks much nicer than mine  :)

One suggestion I have is to punch 3-4 holes at the top of the handle.  Mine work better that way, something to do with air pressure, the water flows more freely.

I'm definitely going to fancy mine up after seeing this!

I love this idea, but does any one know if chemicals from the detergent can remain in the bottle after washing thoroughly? Or am I being a paranoid whack job for loving my plants that much? ;D

I made something like this 2 years ago with an old plastic milk gallon container, but I didn't decorate or paint it, so your is much nicer and equally as useful!  Nice way incorporate some beauty in the mix!

That's a really fun idea.  They could squirt them at each other.  You could put little whale and fishy shapes on them.

Awesome idea! and executed well, too!  I've been wondering about spray painting plastic.  Like, how well it would hold up.  I have these containers I use for my recycling that I've been wanting to make more attractive.  (I live in Houston in an apartment so I have to take the recycling to the center myself.  You have to live in certain neighborhoods to have it picked up.)

I need to be able to wash them out periodically (because they get pretty funky) and not worry about all my hard work chipping and peeling away......

I'm open to suggestions from anyone and everyone!  (Now that I think about it, there's probably a tute for it on here somewhere.)

I tried making this craft - in fact I tried twice.  They turned out cute as could be; however, the paint would come off every time I bumped it against anything.  I tried using paint formulated just for plastic, and I tried regular old spray paint.  Did you have this problem with yours?  If not, exactly what kind of paint did you use?  I really love this project, and would like to do it with some children, but do not want to until I can get the paint to stick.  Thanks.

Well, I haven't had this problem.  I just used normal spray paint (not the type for plastic).  Unfortunately, I don't have the can any more to see what kind it was.  Possibly you have painted it too thickly? Sorry I can't be more helpful.

ALSO- I just noted this was included on the best of 2010.  I feel so cool!
