Just sent in my questionnaire. I'm excited! For anyone who's interested, I have a Flickr set with my stamps, here:

You should try! It's not actually that difficult once you get the hang of it.
I think at some point, though, we should just have a general stamp swap, which would include rubber stamps, foam stamps, wood stamps, cork stamps, or any other type of stamp that you can make. I'd like to see the variety everyone would come up with.

Can't wait until we get partners for this one, though!

I just started carving for the first time today, with nothing but some erasers and an Xacto knife set =X i really hate carving with an Xacto its difficult, so i look forward to ordering some gouge probably this week =] If i get comfortable enough in time before this swap sign up ends then i shall join =]
I tend to be good at new things i pick up! so im confident. My first stamp so far turned out good for a first try and no proper gouges!

Right now im not confident enough in my skill  :-[
I cant order my gouges and rubber offline until june 3rd (had to transfer money to paypal, waiting for it to clear)

I did do a really great job on my first stamp with only Xacto knives, it was hard as hell too =S i bet it would be easier with gouges, i cant wait to get them.

I think i will sign up before the sinup period ends =] hopefully there is room left for me then.
I am in 2 swaps now, only 1 i have to hand craft somethings for =] So i should be ok, and those ones end at the end of June, But i always send really early! so i should be good to join you guys!

QUESTIONS:
In this swap if we correspond with our partner can we send supplies in substitue for stamps? or would we just do them as extras? like say i wanted some big erasers from my partner and offered to make an extra stamp for them?

I guess that they would be extras.  Talk with your partner, and see.  Sometimes we carvers have a lot of stuff on hand, but sometimes we don't!

That would be great =]
Would love it if one of my partners had the "Eraser for really big mistakes" ;] at their local dollar store, i checked and mine doesnt =[ sucks.
I guess if u do use the really big eraser its best to use the hot pink one and not the regular color pink giant eraser, i guess its gritty and difficult to work with and it crumbles to hell!

I will keep an eye on this thread, if i see the list of participants start to fill up i will quickly join on in =]
Im a beginner to stamp carving but not to art, so my skill should improve greatly between now and the time to carve for my partners!

I would say expect me to 100% join this swap, my name wont be seen on the list until the last minute though ;] I want to see how much work my other swap entails for crafting first and then i need to wait also until i get my gouges in the next week or so.

Astrangeone uses erasers and her stamps come out great =] I have gone online to do my research and apparently a lot of people use erasers, usually its mostly beginners that do so they can practice before buying the carving rubber, but people who have been doing it a long time also use erasers, Their great for smaller stamps, like names or fonts or just small pictures.
Astrangeone did my my business name logo for my jewelry stuff so i could stamp the tags with it that their on, she also did my email address that i can stamp on the back of them =] All from erasers!
Can I post a photo in here of stamps she did for me?

Sure, I'd love to see it!
I just bought 2 cheap erasers to try. They're not so big, but for 1 stamp it's ok.

What you guys need are Vinyl erasers, rather than the rubber ones. Pink rubber erasers are a butt to carve and don't give good prints, in my experience. Vinyl erasers tend to come in different kinds of colors and/or designs, while the rubber ones are just pink. My dollar store usually has a good selection, although they don't carry the big white ones anymore :(

Lovely! How cool to have your shop name or username on a stamp...hm, will have to add that to my questionnaire  ;)  Are the white ones also made from erasers?

IdlersDesign, the "white" ones are from Speedy-Carve.  It was one of my 1st times using the stuff.

I actually will try to find a cheap supplier of Speedy-Carve - but apparently, you can also carve plumbing gaskets.  (But they need to be mounted to stamp correctly!)

You can stamp polyclay/ceramic with it.  Plus letterboxing...(google it - it's addictive!)

It is an uber relaxing hobby, isn't it?  Also very creative too!

Rubber stamping is very relaxing, I agree. I like to do it at night after my baby's gone to sleep and I can just unwind for a bit. It's nice  :)

Have you found an effective way to carve plumber's gasket? I heard of this and bought some to try it, but the stuff's impervious to my gouging tools. I'm thinking that the best way would be to cut (with scissors) out my designs and mount them to something, so it would basically be like a more durable foam stamp. I was also thinking of using it to make a brayer, but if I can find a better way to carve it I might use it for stamping instead.

Dunno.  I'd probably grab a bunch from my local Home Depot to try it on.  Maybe warm it up like lino to carve?

Hmmmm....I've never used a brayer before....

I found the blog of someone who uses plumber's gasket for carving:
http://cynthia-stcharles.blogspot.com/2007/03/printing-blocks-plumbers-gasket.html
apparently you can just use linoleum cutters/gouges.
Does anyone know where you can buy it?

Google search "Stamp carving tutorials" You will come up with a bunch of sites that take you through the whole process and answer all of your questions =]
And A lot of people here are also willing to help out, but if you want visuals of the process and such, do the search!
I am ordering a small sheet of linoleum to try out with my order of rubber and gouges. I will also be picking up plumbers gasket =] and water resistant double sided carpet tape for mounting the stuff to blocks of wood.

My paypal transfer of cash from the bank is suppose to clear today sometime! =D im so excited to finally order my supplies, be able to do a little carving in the next 4-6 days, and then sign up here =]
Since it will be my first time doing hand carved stamps i will keep it easy on myself and only sign up to be in a group of 3. I only have to make 2 stamps that way and send out 2 packages.

The next time i go to home depot, I'd try to grab some plumber's gasket!  Very cheap and apparently, very nice.

I also need to pick up my number 1 gouge - I swear one of my blades is lopsided.

I'm excited about this swap, but I hope my partners are understanding that I am sooo very beginner. I tried stamps years ago, had a bit of trouble with it, but really wanna try again, so. Swaps are good for that! :)

I've googles away like crazy in the last two days.. my main problem is very fine cutting.. i got a whole range of needles as suggested but find that no matter how I hold them they dig in and take out large chunks.. Im trying to do small lettering.. anyone have any hints and tips on that ?
I just noticed the sign up dates are quite long.. might have to join up towards the end if i can get this down pat!!  ;D

I've not tried small lettering with needles (I should try, because most of my stuff involves fonts), but if you have the patience, go invest in some cheap reading glasses - these will help you by magnifying the carving material!  Oh, and go lightly around your letters - you can control how much you take off with how deep you go!

My business cards are hand stamped - and the lettering was in 8 point font.  Took me half the day to do it!

I saw some of you guys talking about the big erasers for big mistakes. At the dollar store here, you can only find them when it's back to school time. You can order stuff from dollar tree online, maybe they have them there. If you had enough people interested you could go in on them together...just a thought  ;D

My Dollarama has them all the time - but they are big fat blocks.  The smaller "Everything for a Dollar" in my university town stocks a thinner kind.  I kind of prefer the big erasers, because they are less rubbery and they don't stick to things.  I dunno, I've been buying crappy erasers just to carve them lately!  :D

Looks like Michaels and Hobby Lobby both carry the speedball cutters and the carving blocks. This is good news for me! I think this week I'll go pick some stuff up and begin practicing. :D

I also just went through the galleries from the previous swaps and wisted a whole bunch of things. XD

I tried some erasers for the first time yesterday and they are just perfect. They carve easily and give a good clear print. (so much better than the carving block I had)
So I made my username and a simple Mario item:

Just went to the dollar store to buy more erasers (25 cents!) so I can practice more this weekend, yay!  :D

Dont buy Speedy cut! Michaels is likely to carry this! i hear its a crappy crumbly medium.
A really good cheap place to buy blades and handles and supplies is
stampeaz.com =]

I agree, please don't spend your money on that stuff! It's sad to have spent all that time on a design and then have it destroyed because the material crumbles or dries up! Speedy carve (the pink stuff) is better, and I also really like PZ Kut. I have yet to try the Mastercarve that I bought, but I love how thick it looks!

Same goes for erasers I guess, quality matters. If they're too 'plasticky' they don't take the ink well and the image gets blurry.

I'm excited to join this swap, will get my sign up form filled out asap!

I would love to join this but I already have 3 swaps right now and that is 1 more than I told myself I would have! Let's see, the sign ups are until the 24th? I will have to have sent my MOH by then and I should be done with my Knitters v crocheters by next weekend (already have the patterns!!!) so if I get both of those out before sign ups close I will sign up for this one.

Should I mention I've never made stamps before?! I've been wanting to learn, though!

I also tried my Mastercarve today; it´s very soft but also very, very delicate, so I was not carefull enough, damaged a few little lines that ruined the image and had to throw it away  :'( Back to my favorite erasers... But ok, maybe it´s just me being clumsy, hope it does work for you!

Looking forward to receive your questionnaire  :D

Woah, hold up there.  I wouldn't go so far as to warn anyone off of buying any one material.  There are just too many variables than to be all-or-nothing with carving materials.  The Speedball Master-Cut is crumbly and delicate, but it is great for fine details with light pressure and if you're mounting your stamp and careful with it, no problems.  When I first started, everyone told me to get the pink stuff (Speedy Carve) or the orange, grade A PZ Kut because they were the best - and I hated both of them!  Plus, stampeaz hasn't come out with a batch of PZ Kut for over a year.  Each material is different and better suited for different levels of details as well the preference of the carver.  I'd suggest taking everyone's opinion into account and trying out a few small pieces so you have a foundation idea of what you like to carve for what.  Then you know if you prefer solid or gummy, crumbly or rubbery, thick or thin, etc.  This swap might be a great chance to swap out a few pieces of different materials you have with your partners so you can try them without a huge investment.

Exactly.  Some people like the way some erasers carve.  (I tend to carve from erasers, big or small...)

I do like Speedy Carve for it's texture although the weight of the final piece bugs me.  (I like thinner materials, but I can't find something decent and thin.)  Crumbly bugs me more than rubbery - so I like pieces of material that are very springy.  (Whenever I buy erasers for carving, I tend to press down on them - I found some at a dollar store that fit the bill - but they are smaller!)

I found some that I like at another chain store up here.  It's not bad - but they are printed on one side which makes a double sided stamp impossible!

I'm sorry if it came out that way, I wasn't meaning to "put down" anyone's choice of medium! I just wanted to share my experience because I have had speedy-cut pieces dry out after some time and I hear it's common. But of course trying some different ones is a good idea.

It's okay.  We all have personal quirks with our mediums!

I love the work you do on stamps too!

If I finally get paid, I'm going to purchase the sampler pack from stampeaz.com  and a #1 staedtalder.  I've been carving too long with stuff that doesn't want to take my acetone transfers!

Acetone transfers, how does that work?
I used to transfer with mod podge, but then a very thin layer of paper had to stick on the stamp and sometimes while carving it was damaged and my image was gone. Now I simply use pencil for transferring the image.

Print out an image with a laser printer (found out the hard way that mine isnt!!) cut out image.. put face down on your rubber and lightly dab the back with a cotton ball dipped in nail polish remover (with acetone) ... then lift paper.... image will be on your carving medium!! great for letters as you then carve our whats on your stamp and then it stamps the right way!! great for a doofus like me!! :)

Yeah, me too - wasn't trying to be difficult, just wanted to mention how different each material is for each person and goal.  When I started researching materials, I really thought I'd figure out 'the best' from everyone's reviews and that didn't turn out right at all.

Ah, pencil.  It's the best of both worlds, I guess.  I don't have the patience to do pencil at all!

How do you do mod podge transfers?  The paper thing sometimes happens with acetone transfers, but that's for images with a lot of "black" space - the raised areas.  The solution to that is to lighten your image - I've done some with basically line drawings of stuff.  (Also good is coloring books that you can find online - for a video game swap on here - I did one of Master Chief from Halo - it's a lot of detail, man!)

How do you do mod podge transfers?

Sorry for answering so late...
You can just take you image and put a thin layer of mod podge on it. Glue it onto the rubber and let dry for some time. When it's dry you can carefully remove the paper by using some water (or saliva  :P) and rub it.
You should have a very lean image on your rubber now. Sometimes a very thin layer of paper stays on it, so be carefull when carving.

I made some more stamps this week and am so addicted to it. Can't wait till partner time  ;)

Are you finding it easier to carve?

I'm annoyed at the fact that my local dollar store doesn't stock the shitty "for big mistakes" stamps anymore.  It means I have to go into a fourty five minute drive for my stamping stuff.

I cant find those big erasers anywhere! but i found the smaller ones, which is ok, i got 2 packs of them.
I also ordered Firm Kut from Stampeaz, i like it, but it is a bit firm for my taste, i would like something a little bit softer like PZ kut, i will probably order it next time if i decide stamp carving is something i will do alot, im still not sure, since i dont really use stamps that much.

As my printer broke down I can only make stamps of images that I drew  :-\. I did print some at work, but they were too big or too small for the erasers I have.

Its a brass knuckles in the shape of a paw =] I did it for a personal swap with Pirate Coley! =]

Nope, saw something similar online, =] But i did draw it out myself after being inspired and it just really fit my partners general likes and theme =]
She likes Tattoo themed anything and she has a "Coley" like the dog, in her name, she has one too ;] as far as i can tell by her avatar.

I agree, it's very professional looking! I like that you took the time to carve the straight lines that make up the shading--I rarely have enough patience for that.

Thanks guys =]

the lines were not in the original drawing i did, i just added them in as the final touch to the carved stamp free hand =] And it was very quick lol, i dont have the patience either so i just quickly ran my carving nib over those areas with lines, there wasnt any tedious carefulness about it haha.

Co-organizer note:  IdlersDesign and I were talking (well, typing...) and we decided that since we have two Canadians and a odd number of people - we'd have a round robin going on.

It will go:  Me (Go Maple Leafs!) --> Other Canadian --> Odd Craftster Out

So if your doing round robin, do we still get more then one partner? Or are we just doing 1 partner each now? And doing more than 1 stamp? What changes?

AH! Sign ups end tomorrow. I SO want to be in this one. NO NO NO! I don't need to! I have C-mas projects I need to finish now or they won't get done (I know, 6 months early, but you don't know me man!, men?)! And I haven't cleaned my house in 2 weeks and I have 2 other swaps to finish... but... but... but...

BUT! Stamp carving is not necessarily a big project =] It only takes a few hours of dedication, and possibly 1 to 2 days if you make it your only project for then.

I just closed the signups! I'll work on partners this afternoon when I come home from work and send them to you. Groups will also be in the first post.
@astrangeone: I'll PM you with your groups.

Partners are in the first post and Groups A, D and E should have received a PM with the questionnaires of their group.
  ;)
Group B and C will receive their info from astrangeone.

As most of the US participants prefer not to send abroad, I pretty much organized the groups geographically  ;) So we have some US groups, a Canada group and an `International´ group (Australia, Sweden and the Netherlands) .
I hope everyone is happy with their partners. If you didn´t receive the PM or if there is something else I overlooked, please let me know    ;)

Don´t forget to post at least once a week in this thread, so we know you are still around. And please send a PM to astrangeone (Group B, C) or to me (Group A, C, E) when you send, receive of have other important info.

Question for everyone.   Once you complete your stamps, to do you mount them?  Put  a piece of wood or some kind of a handle on them?  Or do you just use them as they are?

I usually don't, as the erasers I use to carve are thick enough to hold without getting ink on your fingers. I didn't think to mention this to my partners, though, so I hope they don't mind.  :-\  It didn't really occur to me to mention it.

When I do foam stamps, though, I usually have to mount them, and since I'm cheap I use a variety of different things, including bottle caps, lids, legos, and CDs, among other things.

I also never mount the stamps. It takes less space to store them  ;) and with carving material or erasers they work ok without.

Not sure when im sending them yet though, i dont drive so i need a ride to the post office =S

And just because it only took me that many hours to do 4 stamps does not mean they are sub par or small ;] Both partners should enjoy them.
Im just a fast and efficient carver.

And the pride sign that I'm supposed to be doing.

Im a very quick crafter also =] but not sloppy at all! Im just fast most of the time. I usually send very early for all my swaps, but life is getting busy for me also what with culinary school starting and all. Im just glad i got my partners for this swap before i got too busy! =S I take pride in sending early! lol Plus its one less swap i have to worry about =]
I have 2 larger swaps i need to get on right away, especially before the 6th which is when i go to school, these swaps have an exceptional amount of crafting that needs to be done for them. Im sure i will still be able to send for those early but im not sure how early.

I'm just such a perfectionist!  I got two stamps made, and stared at them long enough to decide I need to redo them. lol  I had no idea people would be so quick with this!   But I totally love this swap because it is a simple, yet very satisfying project.  Exactly what I've been waiting to start swapping for.  :)

So, here I am basically starting over again with the making of the stamps, but I'm really happy with the new techniques I've developed!

Wowwie are some of y'all ever fast!

My creative process involves casually meditating on themes until something comes to my mind. I've been casually meditating while doing some farm chores around here, namely cleaning out the two years of poopy hay from the barn which is one hell of a task. Gives me plenty of time to think about my swap partners' themes though. Tonight I'll sit down and get the sketches done for one partner and likely start carving too. I'm still working on deciding what I'll do for the second partner, I have some ideas floating around and will let them keep floating till I'm ready to pluck them out of my mind and put them on paper. Looking forward to seeing what everyone produces!!

I'm envious of all you gals who can draw.  I draw, but it ends up looking like something from "Sticking Around" - that animated show that featured a boy and a girl who were stick figures.

I'm just toying around in photoshop and maybe I'd add a few flourishes that are hand drawn!

On another note ... does anyone have an ink it up pad? i just bought one to test if i had made any mistakes... i really dont like it... it seems to get on everything and takes ages to dry. I dont know if this is normal as I have not really had much experience with stamping.

I bought a gold "Ink It Up" pad ages ago.  It's not a good brand, mine seems to be too dry and too crappy.  I did use it to make a few handmade stickers with my stamps and I think it's kind of weird that the pigment ink seems to take forever and a day to dry.

I'm still deciding what to make!  Yay for being slow as molasses...:D

Who would have thought stamp carving posed such a risk! It's almost an extreme sport with that level of danger.

An update for my swap partners: I sent out one partner's stamp package on Monday around noon, that should be arriving anytime in the coming days. I am hard at work on my second swap partner's stamp(s) with my goal being to get them in the mail next week. Here in Ontario we are suffering through a massive heat wave, which works out in my favour as it gives me more time to carve stamps and less time doing farming chores!

Just wanted to remind you that for this swap you only need to send one stamp to your partners. If you prefer to send more, that's ok but make sure you talk to you partners first to know if they are ok with that.

Oh yes, I do know about the # of stamps. I had a discussion with one swap partner about sending multiple smaller stamps versus one large one and she was OK with that. I am working on a more traditional larger stamp piece for my second partner. I am fully expecting to receiving just the one stamp in exchange, as per the swap criteria, I hope no one interprets the amount of work I've put in or the # of stamps I've produced to mean that they have to increase their workload because that is not what I intend at all. I simply love carving stamps and want to make my first swap a super special one for my partners to receive! BTW if this swap needs a Swap Angel I totally volunteer to do that :)

Most of the early senders sent multiple stamps, so I got messages of worried participants if they had to send more than one. That's why I posted the message...

My partners are nto very stalk-able and that makes finding inspiration for this swap rather difficult. And on top of that, I ordered the wrong materials so the only thing I have to carve is erasers so when I do get inspiration, it ends up not working for small stamps. *sigh* I knew I should have held off. All will be well, though, eventually, before the SO date I'm sure. I have what, 10 days?

Yeah, I've been carving erasers for a while - and I need to get into the habit of carving the pink stuff again.  I like the erasers I bought yesterday - massive things they are, but good.

I hope you have more time and inspiration, jexxican!  :D

I was looking at other people's profiles as part of this swap and realized that so many people are so much more stalk-able than I am! lol  I thought about it at the time, so just in case you were talking about me (since I'm in your group, lol), here's a little bigger list than I made in my original swap survey (Yeah, I'm a swapping newbie; didn't quite get detailed enough ;) :

Here's some more things I like: Cute cartoonish animals, Dr. Seuss books, big bug-eyed things (like big-eyed frogs), bubblegum machines, Christmas stuff (not-religious, but like candles and stockings and snowflakes and tree ornaments).  Hope that helps!  :)

Sorry about the materials!  That's just disappointing and frustrating!

Oh, I got carving yesterday. I think I ended up with about 12 stamps so I think I'm good. Thanks for that little bit of inspiration though. I'm sure we'll be in another swap together, it's destiny. I will be ready to send Wednesday! Now if I can just find the stuff I'm sending to my siblings to get them out that day too... I am going to have fun as the PO this week, I love telling the people what's in my swap packages. "You did what with yarn?!?"

Woo! I am almost finished the second of your stamps but then I started a third one. I expect to ship them on Wednesday. I hear your pain, can't understand why our postal system is so expensive considering we don't have Saturday delivery. I think my other package of stamps just barely qualified as letter mail, that's certainly one advantage to not mounting them eh!

Anyone else ever have those days (weeks? months?) where you want to shoot your husband like a horse with a broken leg and get his best friend to move back down and take over his job/wife/life? How badly I want to rant right now...

This swap sure was fun!

Oh thanks for the concern! I'm fine though. It was just some stuff like finding a baby bird out of its nest and trying to rehabilitate it (sadly didn't work), caring for my animals in the heat, and trying to finish cleaning out my barn that's drained away some of my time. But I'm already like 75% done your stamp set so there will be no issues getting it done this weekend and sending it out Monday am!

Sorry guys, just realized I didn't post for the week.

Been a hectic week. Flew over to Phoenix to pick up a new (to me) car; drove it back to Houston. Then running around trying to get into a new place to live, taking some placement test for school and preceeding to actually start my design class.

Anyway, I should be able to get my stamps done tomorrow. Yay! My erasers were way too small for the designs I attempted and I wasn't able to p/u more carving material til this weekend.

Yours isn't updated, but Jessy's is. I'm gonna assume yours got there because... You and I are a state apart. She's much further. :D

Hi guys,

Just came back from holiday. I spent 2 weeks in the middle of nowhere (ok, it was a village, but being a city person....but anyhow, I had no internet) so I´ve got quite some catching up to do. Thanks for all your PM´s about sending/receiving; I´ll try to have the information in the first post of the gallery updated by tomorrow.

I also received some very pretty stamps from my two partners  :D Will post pics in the gallery soon. Hmm gallery...got to check that one now!  ::)

Thanks for your patience!

Co-Organizer Note:  I'm off to the cottage on July 31 (tomorrow), til August 3 2010.  I will update feedback/statuses when I get back!  Wish me luck with fishing and finding good craft stores up there!  :D

I'm glad to report that I've received my stamp package from sheriffkarli! Unfortunately I've misplaced my camera charger so it'll be a few days till I can share pictures in the gallery.
