Title: How to use the TAG feature
Post by: alwaysinmyroom on April 29, 2010 04:52:22 PM
Hi everyone.

I was asked to remind everyone that in order to make the "tags" function useful for most people, please tag judiciously!

Try to think how people are going to try to find projects on the boards.  We have set up a lot of useful tags and have deleted too specific ones.

Try to be general in most cases.  Only use details if you are providing a tutorial or if that is the key item of your project.

Do not use colors as most people are not going to be looking for a red shirt. Do not use things like "button" unless you are making the button or the item is mostly buttons. Do not describe patterns in the fabric in too much detail or the type of fabric unless it is important, like maybe "knit".

When too many tags are used, it becomes cluttered and overwhelming and taxes the servers in the searches.  I would say not to use more than 4 tags per post please.

We moderators are tasked with tagging posts that are not tagged, so if you do not tag, we are going to try our best to tag it for you.  Please try to do at least ONE tag for everypost.

We are also in the process of removing tags that might be too specific, so if you see tags disappearing, it is our doing.

We truly appreciate everyone's efforts to make better titles, tagging, and fixing  pictures...when you take care in posting, that makes our job much easier so we can view your lovely projects and participate as members and not moderators!

Thank you so much!

Dumb question: How do I add tags?

at the top of every post in the upper left hand corner there is an "add tag" function--when you click it, you start typing and then drop down boxes appear with tags already set up...if you need to add a different one, just type it...

I will warn you that we delete misspelled tags and also duplicates!

Are there plans to include the tagging in the creation of a topic process?

After you post your new topic, go to the top left and add your tags...I don't think there are plans to do it in the actual posting section...yeah, it is one more step, but not a difficult one...I just tend to forget to do it myself!

You can tag your own stuff or anyone can tag anyone else's stuff to whatever makes sense to them...however, duplicates and over tagging is monitored...

You don't have to use tags, but we encourage some use...of you look at the top right sidebar of the page, you will see that one of the ways to search for items is with tags...so if you are looking for "aprons", anything tagged with apron will show up

It is just another way to help search and for others to find your posted project..

tags are very important to find something related to your topic not in same sequence of keywords it use
