Title: a casserole carrier for my Mommy (with TUtE...image heavy)
Post by: lady_41701 on March 27, 2010 06:13:51 PM
This is what I made for my mom for mother's day this year.
A lined casserole carrier.

I used some on hand stash fabrics, an old bath towel for liner, a small rope and ribbon. Love to recycle my on hand supplies before buying new. Feeding the crafting addicting without spending any extra cash :D
First make a circle pattern with the diameter of 17 1/2 inches  out of tissue paper.

Fold tissue pattern in 1/2, cut on fold of fabric. You will need 2 for outside fabric, 2 lining,( use batting or I recycled and old towel) 2 inner fabric total of 6.

"sandwich the layers" and sew together...you will have 2 sets

I traced the inner circle and slit and zig zag stitched before cutting so that the layers stayed in place.
Take the top piece and cut a 6 in diameter circle out of the center,(doughnut) slit one side.

use bias tape to create a casing around the inner circle opening. This will be use to thread a drawstring through. I just used a strip of satin fabric I had on hand.

Sew the top to the bottom with the right sides together. The turn right side out.
Cut out 2 handles ( 18inches x 3 inches)

Thread your drawstring through the casing

I use a cotton rope from an old pair of pants but a shoestring works well too!
Attach handles on the outside where desired.
There  ya go...this fits the round or oblong casserole dishes.

I love this!  So handy to carry those pesky things to people's houses!

Also love that you repurposed other things!

Thanks for sharing a tutorial!  I think these would make wonderful gifts for a lot of occasions!

Thanks for the comment of encouragement! I agree with the pesty transporting of HOT dishes. When I pot luck a hot item I try to cook it "just before" time to go trying to keep it warm and fresh leaving me with a HOT dish to carry. My solution up to this point was I would wrap it in a towel so not to burn my hands in carry process. Not the most attractive solution but it worked. I then sat down to try to "create" a carrier and the result is a really easy sewing project if you have basic sewing skills. You can always set your dish on  the fabric to modify the pattern  size and shape to fit your dish.

Oh I love this! My mom used to have one when I was a kid and I thought it was so silly ... until I had to carry a piping hot 13"x9" to a friend's house. I am *totally* making one of these! :)

made another one, a little less bulky. I only made it with 2 layers, lined it with a soft flannel.
