Title: My new Jayne hat :D
Post by: ragdoll193 on February 25, 2010 07:36:32 PM
After a long while of crocheting, since I just learned in December, I have finally knit something! I would consider it my first successful knit hat, since it is the first one that fits well. and of course, it is a tribute to the cunning Jayne hat from Firefly  :-*

on my very suitable model(slash fiance, slash craftster rotwulf):

and on me:

hopefully the webcam pics suffice :)

this is the "pattern" I followed, which is a mash up of about 4 different patterns, plus my own insight

cast on 96 sts on size 6 (4mm) DPNs in orange yarn
k1, p1 around for 3 rows
stockinette stitch for about 3.5 inches

switch to yellow yarn, stockinette stitch for about 3.5 inches
with yellow yarn, decrease as follows:
row 1 - k2 tog around (48 sts)
row 2 - k2 tog around (24 sts)
row 3 - k2 tog around (12 sts)

weave in long tail and pull to tighten.

for ear flaps:

from beginning of first round, count 11 sts, pick up 24 sts along first row. knit stockinette stitch, making sure knit sts are on outside of flap, for about 3 inches ending on a purl row
decrease as follows:
k2 tog, k until last 2 sts, k2 tog
p2 tog, p until last 2 sts, p2 tog
until there are 8 sts left

bind off, knitting the first 2 sts and last 2 sts tog, leave a 4-5 tail

repeat on other side of hat

add a 2-3 diameter pom pom to the top, mine used equal amounts of all colors, but most Jayne hats use mostly the red/dark orange yarn with smaller amounts of yellow and light orange.

Hey now that looks comfy. Who gets custody of the hat if you both have to go outside in the cold?  :D

well, I've got another one on the needles now, since it used so little yarn (yay!) but today we fought over it. I wore it on the way out, he wore it on the way in :)

I have heard that red heart super saver gets softer if you throw it in the laundry, but I did that today and it seems to have gotten crunchier :( luckily though, my pom-pom stayed in one piece

does anyone know of a good way to make pom poms so it doesn't get ripped apart by someone who pulls on the pompom to take off the hat? (I am guilty)

as with any pattern that is available for free, I would love for you to make one! since it is more of a technique than a pattern, I suppose you can use it to sell as well.

Please post what you make here so we can all see!

Good job on the hat. Kudos.

It's always nice to run across Firefly fans.  :)

Love the hat, I made one for mu husband a few years ago, but he won't really wear it, I've worn it more than he has.
