Details of swap:
Do you like to embroider?  Would you love to have some cool wall art?  What about a funky pillow?  Something a little more classy on your walls?  What about a quilted wall hanging with an embroidered piece on it?   Then this is the swap for you!  You will be creating an embroidered panel that will be used as your partner would like - from simply hanging it on a wall to making it into a pillow or tote bag front!  Endless possibilities with an embroidered panel!
You will need to stalk your partner.  Based on their questionnaire and your stalking, choose a design (yours, a free one, bought, etc.) and stitch it!  The size of the finished embroidered piece when finished should be between 8x8 to 12x12. (i.e. 8x10, 8x12, 11x11, etc.)  Make sure you communicate with your partner! This is a relatively small swap, so we can have some quick and easy fun.

Rules and other info for this swap:
Once partners are assigned please post an update in this thread once a week. You don't have to write more than your crafting progress (status 50%) or even just "checking in", but you must post weekly.  Always keep in touch with the thread and your partner.  This will help stop flakers.

- If you will be sending late you MUST notify both me and your partner ahead!

- Delivery Confirmation must be purchased unless sending out of the country in which case you must get, and keep, a receipt. Please send me a picture of your receipt if you cannot do DC#s.

- When sending PMs please label them asEEPP Swap" + TAG with one of the following tags:
Approval
Sent
Received
Question

So when sending the questionnaire, the subject will read "EEPPSwap - Approval". When notifying me about sending and receiving packages, add the corresponding tag. If you just have a general question label it as that. This will keep things organized for me. Please do not forget the tag.

- I will set up a gallery once the first person has shipped. Please post pictures when your package arrives. Your partner put a lot of work into crafting for you! They deserve a little recognition! I will not leave feedback until pictures are posted. It is always a good idea to take pictures of your package before you send just in case your partner doesn't have a camera or cannot post pictures for some reason.

- FEEDBACK FOR THIS SWAP! This is how it will be done:
Great swapper: for those who follow all the rules
Good/Poor communication:where applicable
Sent late/early: where applicable
Did not follow shipping rule: failed to comply with the shipping rules
Didn't post pictures: failed to post pictures of what they received without an adequate explanation to their partner

Swappers will receive temporary negative feedback if:
- it is one week past send-outs and you are out of communication.
- It is two weeks past send-outs and you have not yet sent, regardless of the communication with me and your partner.

I really like the idea that the embroidered piece is used however the recipient would like. :)

Oh this sounds like a fun swap. I also like the idea that the recipient uses the piece however they choose. I have recently started embroidery, I picked up some books from the library a while back. I am a little bit beyond beginner, so I think this would be great project. I think I'm going to do this one.

I really love this idea and want to join.  I'm going to see if I can get one swap sent and another at least 1/2 finished though before I commit to this one.  I'm trying to cut down on stress by not subjecting myself to swap deadline overload so often.

I'm going to force myself to finish up a couple of swaps before I see if there are openings on this one.  I do so want to give it a shot though - I'm still a beginner - I only do a couple of stitches and have only done three projects.

Yeah, I'm nervous too. I checked out some of the people signed up's work and they have done some beautiful things. Are we going to be paired up with someone at the same experience level as our self? Just curious.

I know many stitches, but I rarely use them.  I tend to use the backstitch, lazy daisy, split stitch and satin stitch the most - so don't stress about how many you do or do not know. :)  This is a low STRESS swap.  I don't want anyone to worry.  Just try your best and I'm sure we'll all be happy :D

HAVE FUN! :D

I tend to just use simpler stitches as well and would be perfectly happy to be matched up with a beginner.  Just think, if you are a newbie you haven't developed any bad habits or shortcuts yet.  ;)  It's all good.

The questionnaire was quite long - but I made it that way so your partner could get a REALLY great idea of what you like.

If you have any pictures or sites that you love (as far as embroider goes) then put that done (link to flickr or the site).  You can also just say that you like cutesy animals, or geeky expressions... its really up to you. :)

I don't know many stitches, but I tend to use the same ones you mentioned, plus french knots (which I LOVE.)  Satin stitches are still a huge challenge for me.   But I like how my sister describes embroidery -- "it's just drawing with thread."  Keep it simple, and have fun, and do what works for you!

***And when I said to keep it simple, I just meant "don't overthink it."  You can have a really complex embroidered piece without it being difficult or complicated.  Did that make any sense at all?   ;)

I think satin stitch is deceptive. In theory, it's a simple stitch. It's getting it to look smooth like satin that is the devil.

My favorite stitches would be french knot, seed, split, back, chain, lazy daisy and satin. I haven't done any laid work in forever so I might work it into the piece that I do for added texture. :)

ooo I forgot french knots!!! :D  Love those!  I've been wanting to do an embroidery of a little sheep just so I can french knot it's wool! :D

My seed stitch - i can never get it to look right for me...

And I call embroidery/thread the adult's coloring book & crayons!  :D

speaking of stitches, i think my favorite is herringbone. it's so beautiful, and easier than it looks.
btw, i don't know if anyone has seen this website (http://www.needlenthread.com/), but she has tutorials for a TON of stitches, and some free patterns as well.

Satin stitches are still a huge challenge for me.

Barbolot:  I used to have a terrible time with satin stitch  (still no expert but much better) until someone saw me doing it and told me you should always start in the middle of the space and work out to the edge on each side.  That made a huge difference in the way mine looked.  You may already know that, but just in case you dont...

THANK YOU!  I did not know that... had no idea!  I always started at one end, and then the stitches would get tighter and tighter, and then some are loose -- UGH.  I'll try what you suggested!   :-*

I love french knots! They are my favorite. And I like making stars and daises. I'm not that great at remembering and using technical terms for things, though.

And thank you everyone, I'm not too nervous about this anymore.

should we post some stuff we've made before on craftster to give other people a taste of what we can do?
(I haven't posted anything I've made)
:)

I used to collect this series when I was 7/8ish (I know- i was a nerdy/crafty kid!)
Needlecraft magic- it's just so awesome!! I still look to it for inspiration today!
I still have 99% of the collection-but some pages have gone missing over the years T.T
Does anyone else have it? :3

I wish I did. I did some really neat stuff in my younger years. :/

There would be a bunch of my old pieces that would interest only those who are into medieval history when I was actively doing reenactment. I'll check one more time this weekend to see if I have anything squirreled away.

I just peaked at the first few links you put on the first page and I love everything on the doe-c-doe page!  I wanted to wist everything on that page. I love that she uses fabric with prints to embroider. I'm going to have to check out the rest of the links when I have a little more time. Thank you for sharing those.

I love doe-c-doe's patterns, too.  I stitched up several of them this summer and they were so easy to transfer.  I'll have to check out some of those links later, too.  There were a few I've never run into.

I'm thinking about joining this swap.  It sounds like a lot of fun.

I just have to make sure I have enough time since I have several other projects on the table right now.   Mostly having to do with organizing my new craft room!  I can't wait until it's done and I can get all my things out of boxes and get back to crafting in the new space.

LOL Lany - you make me smile :)

We have 10 people signed up so far.  This Saturday will end the sign ups - regardless if we hit the 24 number or not - and I'll get partners out on 3/7.  I'm so excited.  So if you have any Craftster buddies that might be interested - let them know to get signed up :)

Cain't wait!!!

Okay- I finally filled out and sent my questionnaire, but I don't think I was specific enough about my interests! I mean, I blathered on for a whole page, but I don't know if I added anything of substance to it!

If you are my partner and can't figure out what to stitch, PLEASE send me a PM. I never know what sort of info to put in my forms.

Can't wait to get started. I have some lovely fabric that would make a perfect base for some embroidery.

I started stitching last night. It's a detailed piece, so I used water soluble stabiliser basted over my design. That way I could draw the design on the stabiliser with a sharp pencil and not lose all the detail.

I stitched away for about 3 hours and hardly even made a dent in the design. I estimate it will be well over 30 hours of work. I'd better get cracking on the train and every evening.

Wow!  I can't wait to be that good, schnerby!

I'm doing something for my daughter right now too and I experimented with the satin stitch and am having trouble with it.  French knots were so easy, why is the satin stitch so hard?? :(

i'm still nervous about trying satin stitch, but i read that using only one thread at a time and starting from the middle are the best ways to go. maybe i'll work up the courage to keep trying.
good luck, sevs!

Satin stitch can be tricky, but I've even seen messy satin stitches that look awesome (like this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/3225666821/in/pool-craft (http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/3225666821/in/pool-craft))  So just give it a go and have fun with it.

I'm one of those that if I have to worry over what I'm doing to the point of exhaustion and stress, I have to let it go.  Just have fun creating :)

I was heading in one direction for a one of a kind design for xperimentl and changed my mind.  While I love what I was going to do (and will still probably stitch it for my craft room or office :) ), I was inspired last night and sketched out the design on my white board... just gotta get it on paper, perfect it and then stitch it! So excited - might have to make two of them - one for me and one for her...  :)

mindboggld - that satin stitch looked great!  I think that perhaps I will try again with one thread, maybe it's too bulky?  Who knows?  The French Knots looked so hard and were so easy and the darned satin stitch looks easy and totally isn't. >:( :D

Let me know what you think about the 1 strand.  I'm huge on using all 6 strands, so I'm curious how it'll work.. :)  I like the bulky stitches :D

Also check out Mary's video - maybe it'll help?

Thanks!  I'll check out the video later, but the second tutorial already made it look easier.  I was using 3 strands for the one I tried, I thought it would look nicer a little bulkier.  It's good to hear that someone as talented as you likes to use more strands!

AWww.. shucks!

I'm pretty sure I used a lot of strands on that rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock piece... I still need to do one of those for myself! :)

I have that hanging in my office, everyone comments on it!  The college students just love it!  It certainly helps to break the ice with students who don't know me well.  I try to have little bits of conversation starters about the office as some of them must look at me and think "What does SHE know about what I'm doing?".lol  It certainly helps if they think I'm a little bit weird too. ;)

SevsOnlyGirl----I don't know if any of the tutorials minboggld listed mentioned this, but one thing that helps with doing satin stitch with multiple threads is to separate your threads then place them back together.  It helps take all the twistiness out.  Then as you are embroidering, if you see you thread twisting, hold your work upside down and let the needle dangle and untwist.  I've done my best satin stitching using this method.  I also smooth my threads as I go using my needle.

Hope that helps!

Don't be afraid of the satin stitch! It's ok once you try a bit and get the hang of it. I found using fewer threads made mine much neater.

Besides, it's hand embroidery. I love to see the hand of the person who worked it evident in the design.

I'll start working on my embroidery tonight. I want to get this weekend's laundry run finished so I can focus on my stitching. :D

I can't decide on which fabric to use as my base. I've got some really lovely linen my Auntie gave me, but I've never stitched on it before, and my design has lots of tiny details. Hmmmm...

It's so easy to second guess your choices on swaps.  I redid my design a few times, tried a couple different fabrics, but I think I'm on the right path now and about 1/2 way done.

Ouch on the finger Sch!  :(

As for me... well... I walked a 5k yesterday morning.  Granted, I didn't RUN it, just walked it.. but the hills killed me (it was my first 5k :D).  So, I have sat on my butt since yesterday afternoon - just a stitching.  Probably got a good 10 to 12 hours of stitch time in, catching up on shows, etc.  Well... I finished. LOL  I didn't mean for it to be finished this weekend, but it is. :)

I'm not sending it out just yet though....

Hey mindboggld, we might be able to send to each other early.  I will be done by the end of this week.  It is my kids' Spring Break so I'm not doing quite as much running around as normal.  Overdid it on the yard work this weekend and need to sit and stitch so my muscles can rest...no 5K, though!

I've been making good progress on mine! I've been watching a bunch of movies and stitching. I'm hoping to send out early.  :)

I've put about 10 hours into my embroidery. I'm hardly making a dint.

I think this broken finger might even stop me being able to finish this swap. I can paint and I can sew, but dammit I cannot work with the needle. What I do is all wrinkly and odd. I can't see me finishing anywhere near on time and it's making me detest the project. I loved the design. I love the fabric. I love the colours. I don't want to hate the project!

I'm working away and the panel is coming along.  Still have a lot of stitching left but should be able to get it done by the send out date.  Maybe I should have picked a simpler pattern but I'm liking how this one is coming along so I'm sure it'll be worth all the work in the end.  Just home Automaton J. agrees.

Hoo-boy. I think I chose something that is way to detailed for the time allotted. Thank goodness I have next week off work. I'm going to really push myself to finish before the deadline, but it's gonna be close!

heyhey,

not close to being finished but just looking for advice, how do I get rid of the lines created by my hoop?
I usually iron but theres the back of some of the embroidery on the area I need to de-crinkle(?)

I'm finishing my piece today.

I thought I would have done so this past week but work wiped me out. I had no extra energy when I came home in the afternoons.  :-\

I'm done but not able to send until later this week. I've been busy baking at my mom's house all weekend for a school bake sale. I brought my panel to mail off, but I forgot my camera! I really want to take a picture of it before I send it, so I'm mailing it later. =/

I can't wait to see what you have all accomplished!

With send outs being 4/3 and several of you contacting me about not being able to send Saturday - I'm extending the send date to Monday, 4/6.  Anyone sending after that date (and have communicated with me) will still get positive feedback, but it will state that you "sent late w/ communication".

Please let me know if you have not heard from your partner.  We want a "no flake" swap :)

Have a great Monday!
Kandra

Not quite done, but should be by Saturday.  Troublet and I live close enough that we are going to meet up to do our swapping.  I'm so excited!  Plus that forces me to get done on time  ;D.

You can try misting the whole thing with water and then lightly stretching the piece out and pinning flat it until it dries- like blocking a crochet or knit piece.  I used to know a on-line tute for this, but I can't find the link!

Mine is coming along well.  I was a bit worried last week but I got a lot done this weekend and all the hard/detailed bits are finished so it's moving fast now.  I should have no problem sending by the deadline.

Try to finish up this weekend and mail by Monday.  If you've already told me that you're going to be late - thank you.  Make sure you contact me when you mail out or if you are going to be late.  I should hear from everyone by Tues morning.

Thanks!

Just wanted to clear some confusion.  I said previously (about 2 posts ago) to mail by Monday.  This is wrong.. it's supposed to be TUESDAY.  April 6th is your deadline... and that's a TUESDAY.  Geez... LOL

Hope everyone is having a great Easter!

Im finished! Not sure whether I should bind the edges/cover the really messy back.  Pearliepie any preference?  You would have a bit of a margin around the piece if I didnt, but they look a little frayed..

Hey Jolyon! I don't mind what the edges (or the back) look like at all. I used a zigzag stitch around the outside edge of my panel- what did everyone else do?

I just left mine raw around the edges and figured my partner could decide if she wanted to trim it down, etc.  Zigzagging is a good idea, though.

I left a lot of extra fabric around the edges and zig zagged them. :)

(I've had a problem in the past of cutting the fabric to close to the design so that it didn't fit well into the hoop or frame.  :-\ )

I finally sent today after a series of misadventures and found out there's a new customs from- it's in triplicate and you get to keep the bottom address bit. There's a number on it, but I didn't think to ask if they're unique or not. Maybe they have some details on the web site...
