Title: bitten by the ATC bug! Digital Misfit's gallery - updated April 5
Post by: digital misfit on January 11, 2010 01:53:31 PM
I have made a couple of ATCs in the past - but mostly stamps and doodles.

I played with several techniques today including gesso texturing, wax collage, packing tape transfers, etc.

I NEED to get a new printer! I am attempting to papercraft with my limted ephemera on hand!

For my wax, I used the melted remains of a scented wax tart in the burner.

Everyone Loves a Balloon

sorry about the flash - I will get around to making a lightbox someday :P

You should! It is so much fun.
It is easily the MESSIEST craft I have done  ;D
It is also quite inexpensive.  The fun isnt in having all of the fancy scrapbooking supplies, its in finding the best random bits and bobs laying around.

btw - question to the ATC artists here: I have heard that many people use playing cards as their backing, but all of my playing cards are slightly smaller in width than a standard ATC.  Is this normal and accepted?

Another lil handpainted one (I tell ya, I am an addict already!)

Face, hands and star are all painted in a pearl paint which does not photograph well.  Edges are silver.

Designs based on UrbanThreads hand embroidery patterns.

Sullen Fairy

Wings painted in pearl paint.

Koi

Background also has some light glitter, and glaze applied to fish only.

I love them! The designs are really great and I particularly like the background on the first one. It's interesting without taking the focus away from the picture.

These are gorgeous! I especially love "Everyone Loves a Balloon".  :D

Some playing cards (I believe they are made for bridge) are small for making atcs. You need to look for cards designed for poker and other games. I wouldn't use the smaller cards.

I really love those first 3!

My grandad didn't love balloons though. He was ridiculously scared of them! :D

Thank you everyone for your kind words.
I love coming up with different ideas for each little piece of art.  My neck and shoulders are killing me (poor eyesight, must get in close to object to paint).

I'm a terrible sloucher so I understand. How about getting a portable easel? You can set it up on a table top. Or painting at your dining room table... I fin it's higher up than my desk and the overhead light helps tons.

I keep forgetting to update this gallery!

Here are some of the cars I have made since my silhouette series:

"Buh-bye" made for audio-astrophysics

"Seers"

"Fragments of the Past'
note: wax does NOT photograph well, it is not opaque as pic would indicate

"The Longest Journey"

"Stonefaced"

magazine/gesso technique with lots of fingerpainting!

"Frida on Purple"
actually my 3rd in a Frida series.  This one was my fave.

"Art Is"

mixed media with stamping, vintage book art image, microglitter, lace, paint, etc

"Miyuki"

"Lolli'

 :) Thank you!

I have more birdies cut and ready to make, but I will have to paint some backgrounds.
I don't have any more "dull" colors for backgrounds, and the bright, busy patterns just don't work.

Tonight's cards:

Monkey Business
paper collage with pieced sock monkey.

Silent Treatment
collage - bird image cut from envelope.  It looks like they are having a lover's quarrel to me. Background of scrapbook paper and vintage French dictionary page. Strip of paper woven in for accent.

Shroomtangle
because everyone has to make at least one zentangle!

My neck is sore from painting tonight's cards:

Aries
metallic paper and microglitter on textured acrylic paint background

the background on Aries is kinda fun.  I painted bristol board with a thick coat of acrylic paints, and then sprinkled baking soda on while it was still wet.  I let it dry, then brushed the soda off (have to rub it pretty good).  It leaves a fabulous texture with a hint of shimmer (which I cannot seem to photograph well).

Young Frida on Blue

4th in my Frida series. original acrylic painting.

Frida in White

5th in my Frida series. original acrylic painting

and a couple more geishas for good measure  ;D ;D

Miaka
papercut on flocked paper and faux leather texture paper background

Teruko
papercut in metallic brushed silver paper

Groovy

I have 2 more Fridas half-painted on the table now, will likely be posted later tonight.
That is, if my camera behaves.  My computer has been moody with it today, not recognizing it.

The last 2 Fridas for awhile:

Thanks raerae :) youre too sweet!

I wanted to give kawaii a try tonight.
I chose this adorable Sanrio (or San-x?) bear, Rilakkuma.  I admit to knowing NOTHING about kawaii characters, but I am a sucker for anything with a bird on its head! :P
I had painted his belly and inner ear a tan color until I realized I had it wrong.

Rilakkuma's Lunar Landing

and evidently I was wrong about being done with Frida.
This one was by request for a more Indian-looking Frida

I thought I would slip a couple of collage pieces in between painted cards.

I Flit Through Life

What Would Freud Say?
I digitally added the funny disguise to a sketch of old Sigmund and glued him onto the trippy background. Base is metallic acrylic paint on canvapaper with sticker for the "engraved" nameplate

It was taken before I finished posting the description on flickr, but I would be happy to make a different Eastern Bunny, if you wanted a trade (actual bunny head and geisha body would be the same as it took awhile to size those babies down to fit each other)

You've been working on coffee themed pieces, and I've been working on tea!    :D  Seems like we're getting tuned into similar wavelengths.  Let's cross our fingers that Mr. Golden Sun shines down on me (tomorrow) so I can get some pics of these!

LOL Kelli - love that you have been working on a tea series.  I was going to do tea, but I really wanted to make that French press :P

It is sunny here today - and of course I have nothing to photograph.  I have been taking my photos under a lamp, with a flash, and then correcting the brightness digitally to make them look truer to life.

Just 2 cards to post tonight.
Spent the rest of the time cutting backings and smooshing glue stick all over the place.
Is it just mine, or do glue sticks stink?

First:

La Sirena
request for a loteria card featuring this exact mermaid, on a playing card base.  I used a card from the casino where I worked as a dealer.
The metallic gel pen accents in gold and rose do not photograph well.

The next one is a card I made for ME  :)
Since switching meds, I have little patience with people.  My withdrawl inspired this card.

Today's work:

My first 2 fabric ATCs, both hand embroidered with button & glass bead accents.  Not really sure they belong in papercrafts, but don't want to separate them from my gallery.

Moon Goddess

Earth Goddess

They were both a lot trickier than I had imagined.  The small scale wasnt so much the issue as making sure the finished piece would be the right size. They are both backed with felt.

Coral Dancer
yet another collage in this series.

Too Much Info!

She Daydreams of Freedom

camera flash caught the "glass" (high gloss glue)

There was also another geisha silhouette, but I forgot to upload her here. Same as the others with different papers.

I am also working on a challenge card.  A friend wanted a private trade.  She wanted a geisha theme, I wanted Einstein (she can rock a caricature).  So now we are each making Einstein AS a geisha!

Both of those Goddess ones rock my socks. Amazingly simple and beautiful, I would adore an entire set of these one for each planet and element or each month or season, sheer brilliance.

Wow, thank you.
When I first read your comment about one for each element, the periodic table popped into my head, and all I could think was "holy crap that is 118 atcs!" lol - I am guessing you meant the 4 basic elements.

Yes the four basic ones...although...no 118 or so would be a smidge extreme

128 ATCs in 2 months.  I am exhausted :P

Tonight's batch:

Dawn of Man
by request, another evolution card - acrylic paint on watercolor paper

Crimson Queen
by request, 2nd in the color queen series
acrylic painting with jewel accents on watercolor paper

Mamekichi
acrylic paint on vintage Asian book page
her name means "faithful" and "good luck"

Off ALL meds for the first time in about 5 years.  My focus and creativity comes in short bursts now, followed by long stretches of confusion and haze.  MUST. GET. NEW. MEDS. lol

Korin
pen on vintage Asian book page with paper, washi and gold paint pen, ink accents
I had actually drawn a whole face, hated it, but this half turned out ok, so I reworked it into a collage  ;D

Viva!
a good example of confusion and haze striking in the middle of creation.

Le Chat
collage with hand drawn & cut cat, faux embossed metal plate

A Stroll In Paris
collage with faux embossed metal plate

Freud 2 (to replace Freud 1 whose envelope arrived torn and empty)

:) Thanks girl!

They are FAKE metal plates - I used glue stick to put a gold foil paper onto chipboard, burnished it down well, then used a black pen to "etch" the words into it.  Draw on some fake screws, and rub away the ink, leaving just a hint of it to look like oxidation.  Easy and fun!
Looks real in person too.

A few more for today:

Gymnast
Birds of a Feather set G

Guy
Birds of a Feather set G

Waiting
various papers & images, jewels, die cut window frame

Ollie
hand drawn and cut papers

It's NOT Junk It's Ephemera!
the cry of every collage artist when confronted by someone who dares question their stash.
made with a bunch of "junk" :P

It's been a few days, but I have finally finished a few more cards.

Three more Fridas (so tired of painting the Fridas LOL)

Frida with sun

Frida with lace blouse

Frida with blue wrap

Cyberfly
(based on Urban Threads embroidery pattern)

Einstein Geisha
(trade with a friend - she wanted a geisha card, I wanted Einstein.  This was our compromise)

Keep Calm
collage with London street map, British WWII propaganda poster, jewels

yay! I'm so in love with my donkey!

words one does not hear often enough  :P

Thank you, jcorn, for your kind comments.

Today, a few new mediums:

Deep Tea Diver

collage on acrylic & baking soda base with metallic gel pen accents

Serene Buddha

fine black marker and cheap colored pencils (waiting on my "grown-up" pencils to arrive)

Laughing Buddha

as above
on cardstock

I am starting to experiment with sketches.  I hate how much detail I lose when I paint with acrylics, and I am just all thumbs with watercolors, so I am giving colored pencils a whirl.

Here are 3 WIP atcs waiting to be colored

toilet paper lotus flower
bonsai coffee mug
Unitarian Universalist flaming chalice stained glass

Thanks AI and Panthermoon :)

My new Koh-i-noor Progressive Woodless colored pencils arrived today from the Czech Republic!  I LOVE THEM!  Gorgeous weight, and smooth color.  This does not mean I am any GOOD at shading or coloring, but at least I have good pencils to learn with now.

I read a tip about using a Qtip and baby oil to blend these pencils, so that is what I did with this set of cards.  The finished result looks a lot like watercolor in person.

Siobhan

Rory

Fat Buddha

The following set was made for a Column A + Column B swap (as seen in previous WIP pics)

Coffee Cup + Tree

Manly Man + Apron

Toilet Paper + Lotus Flower (no baby oil blending on this one)

and the now infamous Chicken + Hand Held Egg Beater
otherwise known as Rambo Chick
