Title: Arabian Nights Bedroom: a belly dancer's boudoir
Post by: Saturn on December 30, 2009 08:45:44 PM
Ok, So I had this painfully plain bedroom...pale pink walls, old dusty blue carpet, white trim, square windows...just painfully, painfully, plain. I belly dance, play middle eastern drum, and involve myself in all things crafty...so it was time for a change! I had a few influences...belly dance, an old 1949 illustrated copy of the 1001 Arabian Nights, and...I'm a bit red in the face to admit...but...the packaging that some Kama Sutra brand intimate products came in. So! All of those inspirations led to the boudoir-harem fantasy mayhem in this pictures. I was going for the tacky-gypsy-hookah lounge look, so any clashing is purely purposeful. I will defend my curtains though, they look yellow in the pictures, but they are gold Thai silk and the flash made them look too bright. They are much darker in person.
On with the pics!

I painted the walls this wine color. In the daylight it looks more purple, with my lamps on it looks more red. The gold design over the windows came from a design that was painted on a Partylite votive holder my aunt gave me. The majority of the bedding came from the Artesia line at JCPenny, but the curtains are my handy work.  :D The little gold shelf by the bed holds some of those Kama Sutra massage oils I mentioned earlier. Hey, it is a boudoir after all!

Ever watch I Dream of Jeannie when they show the inside of her bottle? She had so many cushions! I have 14 cushions in this room alone. I'll probably end up adding more someday.  :D

A corner where I can drum, put on some make-up or enjoy some aroma therapy candles. I also have candle sconces on the walls. This little cabinet thingie I painted white and then took a henna stencil and applied henna with cosmetic gold dust to stain a pretty design on its surfaces. That was a trying project...but definitely worth it! I did the same to my dresser.

My dressing/dance corner. I put some of my belly dance gear here, and in the trunk that the cushions are on. Oh yeah, I made those too.  ;)

I made these with vintage drapery fabric that was my grandmas.

Does your bedroom overlook the sun swept deserts of Rājasthān? Thanks to some acrylic paint...mine does!  ;)
The moon and stars glow in the dark. I used a star map so the constellations are as correct as I could paint them. I'm a nerd.  :P

I did a lot of this antiquing finish to all the candle sconces and this wrought iron garden table with some gold acrylic paint.

And the next project is...the bathroom! Someday... :P

Thanks for looking :)

Can you do my bedroom next, pretty please?  ;) Seriously, this looks so awesome, and the attention to detail really shows, especially with the painting of the window overlooking the desert! I love it!

My daughter and I are both in love with your room. We wanted to try this theme in her room, but have not been able to pull it off yet. We are not allowed to paint and I haven't been able to work out the whole washer/dryer/deepfreeze/furnace/waterheater into the decor, so we put it on hold for now. Maybe we need to give it another try.

So sexy! Though my fav color is red, I know someone who loves purple. So many great ideas I can borrow to make her a gift. If only she would let me re-do her entire bedroom like yours.....

Everything is beautiful and works really well together. I love that fake window, as well as all the detail above the real windows.

Ok I just inspected your pics closer, and you HAVE to do something fun with the ceiling fan.  Either decorate the fan blades or the globe, or add a fantastic pull chain, use like a Turkoman tassel or something.  It's the only corner of the room that seems "ordinary".
I also see a lack of camels!  You gotta throw a camel in there somewhere!

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm planning to replace the globe with a sconce made from a wire "bowl" like form with the remaining drapery fabric stretched over it and then I'll probably paint arabesque designs on the fan blades. I'm also looking into buying a lamp that has a camel base.

I love the colors. Even though they are strong it's not too overwhelming because you left some white, which gives the eye a place to rest. Very important in decorating with so much color and pattern. I also love the vintage fabric and the wrought iron table painted gold. :)

To tell you the truth, the window went surprisingly quick. I did the window sill and frame for two hours on a Saturday, and the landscape and shading took me less than two hours on the following Sunday. I drew the "window geometry" on the blank wall using sidewalk chalk. Then when it came to painting it, it was just a matter of coloring in everything with acrylic paint. The gold designs were first drawn on the wall with sidewalk chalk also, then painted over with gold acrylic. Any unwanted chalk lines came off with a damp sponge. :)

:D Spectacular!  :D

And I love the curtain tie-backs up high like that. Very cleaver and way more practical than in the middle of the window frame.

Yeah, Since two of the windows are over the bed I didn't want something that could be pulled down if I were just leaning against it or something if I was sitting up in bed. I dont have a headboard so I made those thick-framed windows and giant cushions kind of like a headboard. Its working out alright. Best I could do on a student's budget, lol.

To Solitaire and everyone who complimented, thanks! This was really my first themed undertaking, my first indoor wall mural, my first time sewing curtains without stitch witchery, and, the first time the fiance has let me decorate without his input. "Just trust me" became my token saying, lol.

I didn't make the star lantern, though I have made more plain looking ones in the past from a tute someone posted on here years ago. Mine never came out that good, lol. The one pictured came from a small gift shop in Plymouth, MA called Windemere. I went there last summer to visit my family. I love Plymouth...the gift shops and cafes are awesome.  :)

Wow, one of the Best of 2009 and a Featured Project? Thanks everyone for clicking "this rocks!" Made my day!  ;D

The big black cushions with Arabian Nights pictures on them are the only ones I made. The ones on my bed are form the Artesia line at JCPenny, they were on sale because it was a line that they were phasing out. The red Indian ones came from a local gift shop.

It's probably been discontinued, they were phasing it out around the time I bought my set. :( These colors seem popular still, there might be similar one out there. Have you checked with Pier 1 or Target? They often sell things with that sort of style.
