THIS SWAP IS OPEN TO BOTH KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS!!!!

Baby it's cold outside.... so knit/crochet me a pair of socks!   Welcome to the Winter Sock Swap!  To participate in this swap, you are agreeing to knit/crochet 1 (one) pair of socks for your partner, and also provide an additional skein (enough for your partner to knit/crochet up an additional pair of socks on their own time) of yarn.

Now, I'm not your mother, so I'm not going to pester you all about checking in each week.  We are all adults, capable of keeping track of our own obligations... SO... participating in the board is desired, but not required.   Organizational notes will be posted to the board, so I advise checking in to see what is going on.  Sendouts are scheduled for March 15th.  You MUST PM me AND your partner AND provide a DC number when you send.  If I don't hear from you by the deadline, and 1 week has passed, you will receive negative feedback and an angel will be found to replace you.  I think 8 weeks of crafting time for 1 pair of socks is more than reasonable.

IF you would like to do extras.. well, I'll leave that up to you and your partner to discuss and arrange.

So... if you agree to the above... fill out the questionaire and send it to me   stitch81

IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE, REMEMBER TO SEND YOUR INFO TO ORGANIZER VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE AND NOT TO REPLY WITH IT HERE.

Also, thank you so very much for organizing! I have my first swap I will be organizing in January (My Favorite Things Poppet Swap), so I couldn't do this one :-\ I really appreciate this, because I needed the push to learn how to knit socks on my new circular knitting needles ;D

No problem! lol.  I am still debating on whether or not I will actually participate in this swap as more than an organizer.  I'm in 2 swaps right now in which the stuff I am making is knitted... so we'll see how that goes.

I was really surprised how easy socks were! I always heard they were so difficult but I had no mistake in my first pair. Good luck on yours

OK, I can crochet socks and sew socks but knit socks......RFLOL.  I can not even get the direction down.  I wish I had someone close enough to help....I think alot of my problem is, if I could see first hand it would help.

I will have to watch this one and try to finish my hat with 4 needles first.  Then maybe I can get the socks.

I just finished knitting two socks on one circular a few weeks ago. It's actually not too bad if you've done socks on dpns before AND frequently use magic loop. I had fully converted to magic loop before attempting the socks on a circular. the beginning is a little shaky and you have got to make sure your yarn does not get tangled, but other than that I love it. it makes you feel like you're a faster knitter because you're done with both socks at the same time ;D

Seriously thinking about this swap, but I don't want to be a pain in the arse because i want toe socks lol

And magic loop? uh oh lol. Haven't tried that yet, but definitely been a DPN user before.

magic loop is SUPER easy, trust me. Once you get the hang of it, you'll never use DPNs again. You have circulars with a super flexible cord, right? I use knit picks options for that.

I do have those. I think I might practice tonight.

I have to wait for my needles to come in though for that since the set doesn't have a US2. I have a sock already started on DPNs, can I just transfer that to the circular and go from there?

I guess the big question there is, are you doing them cuff down or toe up? I used a really thorough tutorial on TOE up, two at a time on one circular. http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/2mlsocks_start.htm
There's also a video on here for magic loop knitting http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques

Toe socks wouldn't be too difficult if someone had made gloves before. Thanks for those last two links! I plan on doing two at a time toe ups if I can find the needles. I was dumb and being too frugal with my needles and bought acrylic for my size 5 last and they broke while I was using them...and I am a loose knitter. Sheesh, so i have to buy more, stickin with god ol' reliable aluminums. I love the sound they make as I'm knitting"^.^"

I actually made my first fingerTIPless gloves after I made my first two toe up socks on one circular. My hubby requested gloves without the finger tips, because he works on computers all day but works in a frigid warehouse. It was the first non-hat pattern that i "converted" to work with the magic loop. P.S. I also prefer metal needles, but I am a tight knitter. And I also like the sound of the clicking of my metal needles ;D
You know what, I think I will join this swap. Even though there hasn't been too much buzz in this thread, y'all are a good group of ladies. I just gotta wait for a package in transit to arrive at its destination in a couple of days and then I'll sign up.

P.P.S. Anyone check out Joy of Sox yet??? I've been dying to get my hands on it!

ORGANIZATIONAL BUSINESS

Hey guys!  We've had a request from a crocheter to join, so I've opened this swap up to both knitter's and crocheters!  The more the merrier I say.  So if you have some crocheter pals who you know would love to join, send 'em over!  There is now an added question to the sign up info regarding your sock preference (what you would like to recieve) knitted or crocheted.  So I'll do my very best to get you all matched up according to your preferences.

Totally have crocheters in this! I typically don't like the type of fabric crochet produces for certain projects (and I am a crocheter, so please don't throw hooks, but yarn is okay :D) but crochet would make a nice thick and warm sock I think! So bring on the crocheters I say :)

I'm still up in the air on this swap. I'd love to do it, but I need to straighten out my RL situation before I make a commitment. I haven't been put on schedule to work for the past two weeks, so I think I need to find a more stable job. I work a seasonal job at American Eagle.

If you've worked a seasonal job, please help me. This is the first time (and hopefully my last) I have done a seasonal position and was only for income till I found something better. Do I give my two weeks notice? or do managers typically let you go and say "Okay, we don't need extra help anymore?"

Thanks!

I'm considering signing up for this. I've been taking a long break from swaps because life got a bit overwhelming, but I think I can manage to knit a pair of socks before March. (As long as they're not super complex cabled knee socks on teensy needles - I just spent 3 months on a pair for a personal swap... totally worth it though!)

But yeah, sounds like a fun and simple swap!

Lol girls....uhm, I knit somewhat like her in speed :P In general it helps a lot if you knit continental rather than English style :)

Lucky! I have zero sock yarn :P I just checked the store yesterday and sock yarn is bloody expensive! I'm going to check out etsy and knitpicks.com. Joanns is having a sale on all their yarn, but Hobby Lobby has my favorite brands :P

I'm thinking about changing my style up a bit as well. My hands hurts so bad after two solid hours of knitting and I end up having to take a break when really I'm dying to continue knitting!!![/color]

Okay, so I've been trying the continental method, and I'm afraid it isn't going to work for me.  I have "bony" fingers so the yarn slips through and keeps coming loose.  It sure looks like a faster method than English style, but I'm probably going to just have to stay with English.

I did finish my knitting for my other 2 swaps, so I'm all set for this one.  I even have some really lovely yarn ($22 a skein!) to make a pair of socks, but at that price, I may have to keep those for myself.  It was just so gorgeous, I couldn't resist (I never do that!).

I know the board has been relatively quiet compared to other swaps, but we do only have 6 participants at this point,... and I noticed that there is not one crocheter signed up yet.  We have 1 week left till sign ups end, so if you know of anyone that is wavering on whether they should do this swap, give them a little nudge! lol.  We've certainly had enough snow, a nice new pair of handmade socks is just what we all need.... may even throw in some hot cocoa!!!

Ok ok ok I admit I am chicken to do this swap......I am just now getting the hats down pat.   I can sew socks  and never crochet them ....I will have to look for sock pattern.   A week you say......mmmmmmmmmm

When threw my yarn stash.............wow did not realize I had that much.

Hopefully a couple more will join. Socks are fun! I can't wait to have this excuse to learn how to make them on my new favorite knitting needles (circs). I've made them on a knitting wheel before and it was fun"^.^" The only thing I am not looking forward to is the price, I can't afford to pay too steep a price for yarn right now. I have a huge stash of acrylic yarn, but I really do want to get some sock yarn for this swap. Here's to hoping I will find a sale  ;)

well, the $22 for the skein was by no means the norm.  I usually look in Hobby Lobby and get the kroy or patons for like $6, $10 at the most, but that is supposed to make a complete pair.  I also look online on ebay and etsy.  You can find some good deals there as well.

knitpicks.com sock yarn is fairly cheap.

I found some for $7-10.

does anyone have this book ? I was planning on getting it and I was wondering if it's a good tutorial for socks or more design and pattern?

or are there any other books you would reccomend?

my patterns come from Ravelry, from the freebies.

Just found this online today.... awe inspiring, or just ridiculous?  I'm leaning toward the latter....

I love Hobby Lobby's yarns"^.^" I get free patterns from ravelry as well, but I've also checked out books from the library, not impressed with any except for this one:

If you're worried about dpns you could always knit socks on straight needles. I love dpns and hate seaming but someone else might like this pattern:

http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=103&d_id=5&lang=us

I love that yarn, but beware... DROPS are known for their wonkily written patterns so check everything carefully and check ravelry for errata. Ugh... I read the pattern and the one translating it to english wasn't very good at it. But there should be other similar patterns that are better written.

Still not sure if I should join or not... I've bought thick sock yarn for a pair of socks for me and I'm not sure I'm up for knitting more socks than that. Are you guys going for thin sock yarn or thicker yarn?

I think I would want something with sock yarn, a less thick sock.

I want a pair of socks I can wear with my new slouchy boots. <3

You can put that in your questionaire.. request that the socks be "thicker".  I think most people are usually pretty good about trying to get as close as possible to our partner's wishes.... plus, thicker yarn makes for faster knitting!!! lol.  I can handle that!!

What kind of yarn did you pick out?

I'm not sure what kind of socks I want, but I am going to try to go for making thinner socks, since we have a longer crafting period. I think I would want socks I could wear with shoes as well, so not anything too thick, but I do want something that will keep my feet warm.

I too am a beginner knitter. There are lots of fancy-looking patterns that use basic knitting techniques.

I know this isn't a sock pattern, but as an example, I recently made this knit scarf and it looks intimidating, but was just a simple combination of knit and purl stitches.

My first pair of socks I knitted on looms took no time at all. Since we have two months to do this pair of socks, I'm sure it will be more than plenty of time to get socks done, even for beginners (which I will be a beginner for this since I've never knitted socks on circular needles before ;D). I'm hoping to learn cables in this swap, it gives me the excuse anyway and from the videos I've seen it seems really simple.

Oohh, cables are really easy.  You'll have no trouble at all.

It may very well be that I have my socks done super early.  I will be leaving the end of January for a work trip to Louisiana.  It is a 2 day drive, one way, lots of time for knitting, so I'm planning to have my sock yarn with me and get a good start on the socks at the very least.

Okay girls- 5 hours 8 minutes remain till sign ups close.  I've already begun looking at questionaire and have a rough idea of who is being partnered with who (or is that whom??)  Look for your partners tonight!

Good Luck! I have to order smaller sized needles online because the array of crafty stuff out here is crappy. I really wanted to try a toe up pattern from a book I have yet to use. But, I found this pattern on knitty and instantly fell for it. I had been eyeing this certain yarn color on knit picks and the pattern matches it perfectly. I have to admit I'm a little nervous about the pattern. But, that's why I'm trying to start ASAP, in order to give myself time to fix the mistakes which will inevitably happen  :P  ::)

I had to order mine online too.  Craft selection around here sucks.  I'm an ebay addict...lol.  I've got my eyes on a set of Denise, can't afford the Addi's.  I have the Boyles right now, and while they are fine for big projects, they are awful for small ones.  I'm waving on my pattern selection... I'm finding myself sitting here thinking "It would look better if I added this, or changed this..." when I start to do that, it's best to look for a different pattern that better suits what I'm trying to acheive.  Me and freestyle knitting do not go together.  best for me to follow the pattern.  but I do have the yarn! lol

I like my Denise set but I don't think I'd try to knit socks on them. I mostly knit flat on them actually... Either small portable things or large shawls that take almost all the cables put together as it grows. =) I was hoping to try magic looping some day, but I've heard that the cable is a bit stiff for that (and I love my dpns so I don't really feel the need to)

I usually order from Joann or knit picks. I just ordered a set of their "Harmony Wood" DPN's. They look so pretty. I hope they knit as god as they look. I also need to replace my size 1 DPN's. I cracked one while knitting some socks  :-\

I use harmony cables and needles from KP's too. Their cables are very flexible! No kinks either so if you do bend them they don't stay that way.

I have the yarn and pattern and have started one sock.  I'm only a few rows into it though.  We are in the middle of yet another snow storm, and am stranded out in the country here.  The roads are impassable with 5 + ft. drifts.  The kids probably won't have school tomorrow either at this rate.

I will be away from my computer next week, so if anyone needs anything I will get back to you after Feb 6th (will be gone Jan 30-Feb 6)

Finally back home.   It was 2 days driving time both ways, so I got one sock finished, was about 12 straight hours of work.  Would have had the second one finished on the way home but I slammed my finger in the truck door on friday.

interesting shades of purple, yellow, and green.  Still swollen but getting better.  Should be back at the knitting in a couple days.

I'm hoping it will come in this week! I also ordered something for my Harry Potter RPG swap partner from there:D I hate that you have to spend $50 to get free shipping:P I think it should be over $25, because that's the most I usually spend when buying supplies ;D

What are all of you using to knit socks with? Metal (aluminum, nickel-plated, etc), acrylic, or wood? I'm starting to think that maybe I should have gotten the wood needles from knitpicks...just want to know your opinions ;D

I'm using an aluminum circular needle

addi size 1 40" i think ?

I'm using magic loop for the first time.
I love learning new techniques

I'm using my harmony wood from Knitpicks. I rarely use anything but wood/bamboo. The only time I use nickle is when I have splitty yarn.

I also like how they don't get cold like metal ones.

I have continental knitting down and wow it is fast! I haven't had a chance to try purling continental, but hopefully it will be as easy ;D I can knit so much longer in continental versus English, my hands don't cramp up as fast! My thumbs are hurting though, but hopefully that knitting guide I ordered will help with that.

I have got to try some of those harmony circs from knitpicks! It will be awhile before I can order from there again, but hopefully I will be able to afford some harmony needles, I want to try them out. I have hardly any knitting needles, I'm just building my stash now. I mean, I have a good variety of straights, but as far as circs go, I have my aluminum size 16 29", aluminum size 10.5 16", aluminum size 7 29", and the nickel-plated size 2 40" that I just ordered.

I also have this fear that I am going to become addicted to alpaca yarn when I try it. I want to try knitting with silky bamboo yarn and non-shedding alpaca yarns...but I'm kinda afraid I will become horribly addicted to them and I can't afford that kind of addiction. Oh, and I'm wanting to try knitting with bulky tshirt yarn ;)

I use bamboo. I LOVE using bamboo/wood because it hold the warmth better. I do however have acrylic which are pretty nifty, too.

I just spun some yarn from my alpaca roving and I can't wait to knit it up! It's soooooo soft! I have some more roving on the way to spin up ^_^ ( It's safe to say I'm addicted >_<)

I use bamboo as well. It's got better friction. Metal can slip out sometimes, especially since I tend to have a loose gauge.

Progress:
About half done with the first sock. I just turned the heel. I just started on Thursday though so it's going pretty fast!

Why the crap is mail staying so long in Atlanta?? My hubbie and I have had other packages that were suppose to be 2 day shipping take a week because it was stuck in the Atlanta processing facility :P So weird. Anyway, I'm hoping to receive my yarn today...finally...

Atlanta is a huge hub for more than Georgia. When I lived in Birmingham our mail usually went through Atlanta no matter where it came from.

I feel your pain, you'd think it would be faster.

That's so weird. I also had a package detour from Ohio to Pennsylvania on the way to California. I though it was an isolated incidence.

My sock progress: I sock down. 6.5 inches done on the other sock. Hoping to be sending out next week.

I'm having so much fun making this sock.
I'm about to the heel flap now.

What is everyone's favorite technique for the heel to make a nice seam? I'm afriad I'm going to leave holes, ahhh it drives me nuts lol

I think I made a little mistake on one side of the sock :-[ Sucks to find out this far along. It looks good overall, but I can notice it, probably just being too hard on myself. This is my first pair of socks knitted on circs (which I am totally digging by the way  ;) ). I always feared knitting with fingering weight yarn using tiny needles, but I'm really loving it and it's coming along pretty fast ;D

I think we are always the hardest on ourselves.  Since we are the ones who make the item, any mistakes seem glaring to us, but not noticable to others.  Can't wait to see them!!!

I have a guild meeting today and will set to work on getting the second sock finished.  I found a wonderful yarn shop in Minneapolis and got a skein to send along.

How's everyone else doing?

one sock finished . It took a lot less time then I thought it would , only like 3 days. Second one to be started very soon, and the yarn to go with has been dyed and ready to go for a month or two now. I'm now addicted to making socks, I never knew it would be so easy. ordering lots of sock yarn for my birthday!

I am almost done! Just one inch plus the toe of the second sock, and then I'll head to the local yarn shoppe for the yarn. I was hoping to get it from the farmer's market, but the wool lady there just makes un-dyed worsted weight yarn.
