Title: Weird Tree Ornaments: Craftalong for Christmas 2011
Post by: ghilie on December 16, 2009 01:32:22 PM
It's a new year, and there are some new ideas here at the craftalong that could - chugga chugga, chugga chugga, toot toot!  You may choose between last years themes or this year's themes:

January - Scavenger 'make it from what you find
February - Evil _____________
March - Roadkill / Spooky animals
April - food with faces
May - ye olde times
June - pixelated
July - Inspired by a celebrity baby name
August - Wing-ed Things - anything can have wings!
September - Childhood Heroes or Misfit Superheroes
October - Misfit Toys
November - movie quotes
December - Add a Santa Hat (anything can wear a santa hat!)

So, I know it might be too late for 2009, but I have totally not been in the mood for Christmas this year and I may want to rectify that for 2010.  Since Rudolph and Santa haven't been doing it for me, I was thinking we could start a craftalong for different (oddly) themed Christmas ornaments.  I was thinking:

January: Zombies
February: Pirates vs. Ninjas
March: Mustaches
April: Internet Memes: LOLcats, Demotivators, Homestar Runner, O RLY, Ima let you finish, etc...
May: Robots vs. Aliens
June: Voodoo dolls
July: Cute 'n Spooky
August: She blinded me with Science (Cells, planets, organs, calculus, etc.)
September: Underwear? Under there!
October: Creative Creatures
November: um.  Hair.
December: Wild card - do what you want, but show your tree!

So, anyone want to do this with me?  Anyone?  Bueler? Bueler?

like the idea. sadly, i don't have a use for weird ornaments.

+ so far, i've seen hilarious easter bunny christmas ornaments. eggs and everything.
+ and what about a "recycling" topic? like, i don't know, maybe keys from old keyboards  on a string.
+ organs? knitted kidneys and tiny hearts ...

More people, yay!

Ok, since it is the first, this month is zombies.  Of course, this includes: zombie santas with bags of organs, zombie cats, zombie protection kit ornaments, if it is a zombie, or kills a zombie, or is food for a zombie, it's game for an ornament.

I've wanted a ginger zombie since I made the one pictured above for a swap two/three years ago.  Why am I always the last one I craft for?  Anyhow, here is my first zombie ornament for the month of January, it is only about 2 inches tall.  So cute!

Thanks!

My Christmas trees tend to be really smallish, about 3 feet or less, so I need small ornaments.  I am not a papercrafter, but I tried my hand at an inchie:

Rule #1 from Zombieland.

all of the stuff you made so far is great! (i especally love the gingerbread i have a thing for gingerbread men)

now to the ornament i made: it's not a zombie ornament, it's a christmas ornament zombie  ;D

it hung on the tree when some evil 4-year-old, grabbing for sweets, broke it. no one noticed the poor ornament on the floor until the cat decided he needed a new sparkly toy. but little ornament wasn't willing to die, so he became a christmas-zombie. he hides behind the branches of the christmas tree every year and just comes out to scare little boys.

OK wow! This is awesome. I am going to try really hard to get my act together enough to join in as this is right up my alley... although i may have trouble moving on from the zombie topic... there is simply so much material for that. Slightly off-topic is a gift I made for my brother for the 2009 holidays...

The snowman is cut from wood and then I used hot glue to add more gore to the blood.

Love the ATC ornaments - can you imagine how cool a tree decorated in ATC's would be?

Brains!  I thought about a brain on a plate with a little fork and knife in it, but I didn't do it because I just dont have the materials to make it.  I really like your felt brain!

Beheaded snowmen always remind me of Calvin and Hobbes comic strips.  Keep 'em coming, I love it!

This sounds like fun. I think instead of using them for a Christmas tree I'll make a Halloween tree. I already have a spooky looking tree branch that is simply begging to be made into a tree! This is my first craftalong so should be interesting to see what myself and everyone else comes up with. I love all the great ornies that everyone has posted so far! Awesome-ness!

Ok here goes nothing! This is my first pic post ever so hopefully I do it right. I made these with salt dough and then cooked them in the microwave. The zombies brain burnt a little bit and smelled like burnt toast for awhile. lol. They're painted with acrylics and sprayed with clear glaze

My very first zombie ornament. (my first zombie anything actually)

And Zombie Cat.

I think they came out pretty good. Comments appreciated! Thanks for looking!

Goth Mummy, I think you should still post your photos! I don't hink anyone would care that it's a new theme. I'd love to see what you've come up with.

ghilie, is this months theme still going to be pirates vs ninjas? Can we choose one or the other or should we do both? Thanks!  Just asking because I'm not really into ninjas.

Title: Re: Zombie, Pirates, and Ninjas Ornaments: My weird tree for Christmas 2010
Post by: ghilie on February 01, 2010 02:32:45 PM
Well, it is February 1, so that means a new theme.  If you still have zombies, feel free to show us pictures.

February is Pirates vs. Ninjas.  If you only like pirates, only do pirates.  Same goes for ninjas.  Most people are polarized, preferring one over the other in the great debate that is Pirates vs. Ninjas.

Pirates, Yay! My son will be happy, as will I as we are both pirate obsessed. Ninjas I can get on board with too :)

Love all the zombies!  I agree, if you join in late, you can still post the months you caught up on.
At the end of the month, we can see who won this classic debate... Pirates or Ninja's!  So if you have a favorite, better get to crafting them!   (I am so glad ghillie let us know we did not have to do both.. I was trying to figure out how to do them in battle!)

Post by: erdbeerblau on April 07, 2010 12:17:37 PM
i decided that we desperately need some pictures, so there's an in-progress-shot featuring
-a purple mustache (made of my own hair  ;D) for the mustache ornament,
- a pirate hat for the pirate ornament and, finally:
- LOTS of styrofoam balls i was out of them after the first ornament and couldn't get new ones until today.

i think i will make all of my ornaments like the zombie, then i'll have a matching set in the end :-)

now i just need to cover a million styrofoam balls in glitter  ;)

i don't know. maybe he is missing something, ideas anyone? i don't want to make a mouth tough.

that's "mustache". i think he is adorable.

i made his mustache and eyebrows out of a strand of my own hair, because my trees colours are silver and purple.

i went crazy and made 5 ornaments in the last few days, all in the same style. but i will wait until their month has come  8)

I love the idea of internet as a theme! Will MYFACE ornaments count? My aunt can never get the names correct and I think it would be an amusing present for her :D

And here is April : Internet Meme

I decided to choose Chuck Norris as my meme - because I always love the one liners people come up with for Chucks awesomeness   :D
That whole 'Chuck Norris ...' theme was going on for a while - one liners popping up everywhere
Google even payed tribute. There was once a time when you typed in Chuck Norris into Google and hit 'Im feeling Lucky' it would bring up a page saying  'Google does not find Chuck Norris, Chuck Norris finds Google'  ;D

So here is my tribute to him :)

Chuck as Santa. If you cant read whats on his top it says ' All Chuck Norris wants for Christmas are your two front teeth'
 :D

PS... LOVE the chuck norris ornament!

hehe, the heart is a bit weird I know - but yeah nouga, its liquid sculpey gel..

actually after seeing your angler fish fins  ;D , I was inspired to try it out myself (i hadnt heard of it before ) so I found some and experimented..I used glass paint on it :S

Title: Re: Zombie, Pirates, and Ninjas Ornaments: Craftalong for Christmas 2010
Post by: nougatgee on October 21, 2010 09:42:13 AM
i had tried glass paint on liquid clay (fimo deko gel)  i'd made fairy wings and used the glass paint for the veins in them.  maybe cos i used kids stuff rather than the proper thing from a craft shop, but altho the glass paint seemed to have hardened after some days it started sticking to the fimo.  as if the fimo was melting it like certain plastics do if you've packed them away together for several years....

hmm, thats strange.

I dont have expensive glass paints.. probably just mid range. But they went on fine and set within a few hours. its not sticky to touch at all..

Well... It is a pity that no one else ended up doing this Christmas Ornament thingo.
But I figured that since I was the only one doing it that I may as well stick it out and finish it :)
So here is :

  September : Underwhere ? Under There !

Santa has a secret underneath his big red suit

He likes to feel a little sexy underneath it all

Cheeky, Santa   ;D

and October : Creative Creatures

This one is a little weird - I'll completely admit that :) But I had no inspiration..

My creative creature is :  'If Aliens mated with Humans'

November and December to go..

Post by: Ankhored on January 05, 2011 04:30:10 AM

Hello ! Well, I did end up finishing all 12 ornaments.

 November: Um. Hair.
I was a little lazy with this one as I almost ran out of time
to do it before giving them as a gift to a friend.

And December : Wild Card, but show us your tree with the ornaments!
- My wildcard make is Sack Boy from LBP with a christmas costume on :)
He was one of my favorite ornaments out of them all

Here are all of my ornaments together :

I gave them all to a friend for christmas. So I didnt get to take a photo of them on my tree.
I wrapped up each gift individually and put a label with the month and the theme attached.
My friend got to open one gift a day over a 12 day period in December and she hung them on her tree :)

Im going to do it again this year - and my friend wants to do it aswell,
we will swap our ornaments at the end of the year
Except..I need new themes for each month...

?? :)

I just love your ornaments!!  I was so ridiculously busy last year that I didn't get to make any.
This year i'll have to make double the ornaments - for last years themes AND this years!

Since I don't have a resolution this year that can be mine. To actually make ornaments this year!  :D

I'm drawing a blank on ideas for themes though...

Ankhored - do you have more detailed pictures of making your ornaments? I'm so in love with them. Esp nekkid Santa and Sackboy.

Title: Re: Zombie, Pirates, and Ninjas Ornaments for Christmas 2010 Craftalong
Post by: ghilie on January 05, 2011 04:42:16 PM
like the idea. sadly, i don't have a use for weird ornaments.

+ so far, i've seen hilarious easter bunny christmas ornaments. eggs and everything.
+ and what about a "recycling" topic? like, i don't know, maybe keys from old keyboards  on a string.
+ organs? knitted kidneys and tiny hearts ...

we could use these ideas, and some one suggested roadkill, and there was also a suggestion of spooky cats...

how about "food with faces"?

what else?

Title: Re: Zombie, Pirates, and Ninjas Ornaments: Craftalong for Christmas 2010
Post by: beckashell on January 05, 2011 07:10:41 PM
Ghilie - did you want to change the title of the thread? I don't think we need a new thread. That way people can continue to look at last years themes and ornaments.

I like food with faces :) I'm thinking "French toast" - with beret and mo'.

I can't think of anything particularly good, but here's what i've got:
- celebrity baby names
- Ye Olde Times
- Miniatures
- with a hat
- dead poets
- pixelated
- something Youtube related...

I'm no good at this! :P

Title: Re: Zombie, Pirates, and Ninjas Ornaments: Craftalong for Christmas 2010
Post by: Ankhored on January 06, 2011 02:34:06 AM

hey beckashell, no I didnt take any photos of the progress.. :( I never think to.
But all I did for both the Santa and Sack boy was get super sculpey and then sculpt, cook, paint :)

 Those themes are great !

 so far Im liking  :

-Scavenger 'make it from what you find
- CarnEvil (carnival with a spooky twist)
- Roadkill
- food with faces
- ye olde times (medievil or however you want to perceive it)
- pixelated
- inspired by a celebrity baby name : LOL,  I like it - there are so many strange names to work from :)

And some other options :

 -Under The Sea
 -Alice in Wonderland
 -Magic and Fantasy
  > or we narrow down the above theme to a less broader range i.e. Fairies and Goblins ?
 -Childhood Heros
- Tim Burton
- Wings

...Ill stop now or it will be hard to narrow it down to 12 :)

Title: Re: Zombie, Pirates, and Ninjas Ornaments: Craftalong for Christmas 2010
Post by: beckashell on January 06, 2011 03:02:11 AM
Oh yes, I especially like scavenger and childhood heroes!!
And Alice in Wonderland - i've never crafted anything Alice before, but always wanted to! The only thing is that's it's not exactly a "unique" theme... hmmm.

I'm so excited. I'm not going to let myself join anymore swaps until i've crafted ornaments for this. Unfortunately i'm going away for almost 2 months in just 2 weeks so will be a little behind :)

Title: Re: Zombie, Pirates, and Ninjas Ornaments: Craftalong for Christmas 2010
Post by: Ankhored on January 06, 2011 03:23:36 AM

Oh that doesnt matter if your behind : i didnt start last years ornaments until march I think :) It will be great having a few other people do it this year

Yeah alice in wonderland isnt a very unique theme - but you could be as imaginative as you like with it :it doesnt have to be a main character...could be a random little character from it, or part of the scenery or set, an abstract form of something...anything :)

Okay so this could be the list so far :

-Scavenger 'make it from what you find
- CarnEvil (carnival with a spooky twist)
- Roadkill (or we could do spooky animals if people dont want roadkill on their trees :P)
- food with faces
- ye olde times (medievil or however you want to perceive it)
- pixelated
- Inspired by a celebrity baby name
- Alice in Wonderland
- Childhood Heros

what other three shall we have to make it 12 :
-Wings? Under The Sea ?
any of the others? or does anyone else have ideas?

This is tricky!! It's getting late and my sister and I are getting a little loopy with our ideas...

- Misfit toys
- unappreciated comic book heroes eg. ant man
- movie quotes
- hybrid creatures/inanimate objects eg. spoodle = spoon and a poodle
- santa photos. The ones with kids screaming on Santa's lap.
- anything with a santa hat - a dishwasher, an eyeball etc

I think it may be time for bed for me. :D

Awesome ideas. Its becomming hard to pick 12 ! We almost need to do 2 a month LOL

someone suggested to me : turds with undigested food in it. omg, anyone want that on their tree ? LOL ;)

but what to you think of this list of 12 ?

-Scavenger 'make it from what you find
- CarnEvil (carnival with a spooky twist)
- Roadkill (or we could do spooky animals if people dont want roadkill on their trees)
- food with faces
- ye olde times (medievil or however you want to perceive it)
- pixelated
- Inspired by a celebrity baby name
- Wing-ed Things (is it ok if we have this one instead of alice in wonderland ?...can give wings to whatever you want)
- Childhood Heros
- Misfit Toys (love it, it made me think of the kid from toy story who put all different parts of toys together to make misfit ones)
- movie quotes ( do you want to inlude this one? it sounds hard but it will be a good challenge trying to create something based on a quote)
- Add a Santa Hat (we could have this one for December :P)

:)

yay a list! Thank you for narrowing it down as I wouldn't have been able to.

I'm fine to switch Alice with wing-ed things. It'll be fun sticking wings onto things :)

I have a feeling that i'm really going to struggle with those early themes! I love them but have no clue what i'll made for roadkill and CarnEvil.

its on my to do list for my 50 projects in 2011.   :D  I think the problem is that crafting these things is for ourselves, and we often craft for others instead with our own projects falling by the wayside.  the only person to finish the craftalong did it as gifts!

I know what you mean. I never craft for myself!!

But i'm pretty bad with ornaments. I don't like to share them :) So as long as I make the time this year i'll be fine. Maybe i'll give some to my sister. I'm not sure if anyone else I know would want these themes on their tree!
