Title: A very smart Santa hat
Post by: elvissatx on December 10, 2009 12:23:49 PM
Like many owners of smarts, I have an unnaturally close relationship with my car.  Since this is our first Christmas together, I thought Ruby needed a little present too.

I'm very proud to present Ruby in her new Santa hat!

The hat is made out of a yard and a half of fake fur, about 4 yards of 72" red sparkle felt, and cussing.  A whole, whole, whole lot of cussing.  It was quite a project!  It's attached to the car with elastic straps at the side mirrors and tailgate, and an adjustable webbing strap under the roof.  Then I used my air compressor to blow up a plastic garbage bag to put under the hat to give it a little peak.

It's not great for a lot of driving, except when you can go slow and not get in the way, because the visibility isn't great, but I've taken it for a whirl in the neighborhood, and I got quite a few giggles.  On Saturday, she's going to wear it to a Blue Santa event be on display there with another smart whose owner bought a costume to dress his car up like Rudolph.  With luck, it will be hilarious.

I'm glad to share all of the steps that were involved in making it, if anyone is interested.

Ruby and I both thank you for letting us show this project off!  Happy holidays to all!!!

THIS ROCKS!
We went and looked at a Smart car, but we're holding out till the Smart for 4 is here, cause we're a family of 3.
Our daughter is almost 3, and whenever she sees a small car on the road- I drive my mom's old Escalade, so she thinks lots of cars are small- she gets super excited and cries out "A Smart car a Smart Car! It's RIGHT THERE!" and makes us look ;D
When she gets home with her dad I'll show her this, she'll be super excited! So am I! Adorable!

When you get your ForFour, you'll have to make one too!

I hope they're over here soon.  smarts are the funnest things to drive-- you'll enjoy having one!

Thank you for the compliments!

Ok, this is frickin' hilarious.  Only you would come up with a hat for your car.

I love it.  Awesome job.

Don't forget to post pics of Rudolph.

That is the most accurate materials list I have ever seen.

It doesn't matter how much cussing is involved, the end justifies the means....one fabulously festive smart car :-*

Thanks, everyone!

Tonight was the big Blue Santa event at the gigantic outdoor mall, and Ruby and Bruno (my friend's smart) were a big hit.  The kids just went nuts for the Santa and Rudolph smarts (and somehow I didn't get a picture of the two of us together, but I think Eddie did, so I'll get it from him to post), and we all had a good time.

I appreciate all of the compliments!

Now, how to make a beard for her for next year.  Hmmmmmm....

I wish I had more, and certainly dozens of strangers have taken pictures of her.  A friend and I took her for a long drive around town right before Christmas and people were pulling out their cameras left and right.

ButI don't have any more action shots, because I'm always driving!

I need to find someone who can take a picture of me driving down the street, pompon blowing in the breeze.

That is hilarious! Beats the pants off of those antler-and-nose car sets and plastic wreathes strapped to radiator grills.

Thank you!

Although, devilmaycraft, I have to tell you-- next year for Austin's holiday parade, my smart club is planning on having 8 smarts wth sets of antlers leading my Ruby in her Santa hat, which should be pretty amusing.

And it was suggested over the weekend that the next hat I try to make for my little smart should be a (wait for it!) dunce cap!
