Title: Tri-beetle hat
Post by: redflag on September 28, 2009 03:35:10 PM
It's almost hat weather here in Iowa. I found this Knitty pattern through Ravelry http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTcrosscountry.html

I didnít think cotton was probably a good choice for fair-isle, but of course I went ahead and used it anyway. All in the name of being cheap. This is my first fair-isle project.

The hat was quite roomy, but after lining with fleece the fit has drastically improved. Check out http://techknitting.blogspot.com/2008/06/fully-lining-hat... for some good tips on lining hats.

The only chart I used from this pattern was the snowflake chart. I was pretty intent on having a dinosaur hat, and found a chart http://www.yarn-visions.blogspot.com/2009/01/brontosaurus... for a triceratops. It looked more appropriate for intarsia, so I added some more squares here and there to make it more fair-isle friendly and avoid huge long floats. I also decided beetles would be a good addition and made up my own chart for those. The beetle legs looked pretty awful - the individual green stitches got lost in the background. So, I duplicate stitched them after the hat was complete.

Needles: size 2
Yarn: recycled cotton from thrift store sweaters

Thanks for looking
Amy

Very cool hat!  I bet my boys would love this (which is why I'm not going to show it to them. They outgrow everything anyway, right?)!

Ha, ha, I'm 31, but often seem to have the fashion sense of a small boy. Shark hat? That sounds awesome.

Oh, yeah? I'm in Iowa City, how about you? It got down to about 40 degrees last night!

I have a green triceratops I got from Build-A-Bear/Bear Factory 2 years ago, and he's like a child to me (you can laugh out loud at that if you want, it is kinda sad!) - but he's got me all obsessed by everything green/triceratops!! So I adore you had, I love the style/shape of it too!

Awesome! And great job changing the charts to what you wanted.
I hope you don't mind me stealing the idea for my friend's christmas present. He loves dinosaurs as much as any 6 year old. :D

Its beautiful. I'm just starting to knit and knitting in circular seems scary to me but its a gorgeous hat.
Crocheting in the round just seems easier but I love the way knit hats look with fair isle and color changes.
Did I mention its beautiful and I love it.

Wow!  Bugs and dinosaurs--I love it.  I'm working on a chullo with flames, race cars, and aliens, a special request from my nephew.
