Title: OH DEER. Antlers?!?!?
Post by: hellotheremary on September 23, 2009 06:10:39 PM

Ooh!

So this year, I wanted to be something super funky, but easy. I was lurking around the internet and found THIS picture. (NOT ME, or anyone I know, sorry if it is you).

https://www.craftster.org/pictures/uploads/159250/159250_23Sep09_deer.jpg

SO I WANT TO BE A DEER. But I'd like to have some slightly realistic looking antlers. I plan on them being the thing that really "makes" the costume. I plan on wearing similar makeup and a brown outfit with a tail! Black shoes, black gloves. Something relatively simple.

So I made these antlers out of sticks, scotch tape, masking tape and gesso.
They got the general idea, but I'm not satisfied yet.

https://www.craftster.org/pictures/uploads/159250/159250_23Sep09_KFJBSKJFH_094.JPG

Here's a detail, so you can see how great they don't look.

https://www.craftster.org/pictures/uploads/159250/159250_23Sep09_KFJBSKJFH_099.JPG

ON MY HEAD. (do they look too big?) I plan on somehow attaching them to a headband?
p.s. I have a giant leaf!!!

https://www.craftster.org/pictures/uploads/159250/159250_23Sep09_KFJBSKJFH_102.JPG

SO I just wanted to show them off, ask for help.

So if anyone has an idea for a better technique, or how to improve on these, thank you in advance!
Or any deer costume ideas?

go with brown rather than black, dark brown even
some cool knee high boots would be cute

as for the antlers they are good...the bigger the rack the greater the prize (that sounds worse than I meant it)  Can you paint a lumpy type glaze on them or maybe just coat them with a light stain??  The tape works but maybe another layer on the "stem" or main stalk of the antler/

Omg you are going to be the cutest effing deer ever.

I love this idea.

That's a great idea :) Could you cover them with an air drying clay to even out the texture?

Hey, that clay idea sounds like it might work!
Personally, I think they look fantastic as it is...maybe a bit big to attach to a headband but overall they are pretty damn cool!

Oh cool! They are perfect shape. I'm curious tho how you are going to attach them, also...  clay might be heavy??? *shrug*

Title: Re: OH DEER. Antlers?!?!?
Post by: iamdolleyes on September 23, 2009 10:25:42 PM
there is a type of air drying paper clay that is VERY VERY light and i think it may work

it's called DELIGHT and it is carried at michaels (if you have those where you live)
blue bag with fluffy clouds on it

you could also consider buying white floral tape and wrapping that around it, but it may have a look to it that you do not like (the wrappy bit)

upside is the floral tape may help you attaching it to the headband. hmm, as for that, i would be tempted to try to make a socket system, so that your antlers can fit into a socket you have attached fairly firmly to your headband. that might relieve some of the issues that attaching the whole thing would cause (hmm, maybe i'm looking for the word torque? whatever...haha)

i really like your costume ideathough, it's very sweet!

Super cute idea!!! As for ideas or suggestions I really have none...but your idea is adorable! You'll make a fantastic deer! I suppose if the headband idea doesnt pan out you could use a clip or something.

I agree on with everyone else on the lightweight clay idea.  As for the headband, I'd make sure you use on of those cheap plastic ones, as they'd be a lot sturdier than a fabric one.  Perhaps you could mold the clay to help secure it to the headband?

Title: Re: OH DEER. Antlers?!?!?
Post by: erdbeerblau on September 24, 2009 04:19:05 AM
what a great idea.

i like them. what about papier mache to even it out? it works great with very cheap toilet paper and costs about nothing. (in fact, i think it's very similar to paper clay, but at least where i live it is usally so much cheaper.
maybe you could attach wire to the
antlers to work them in a headband? i think if they're just glued, they will come down soon. or do other stupid things.

Title: Re: OH DEER. Antlers?!?!?
Post by: Dragonflower on September 24, 2009 07:32:49 AM
I second the paper mache idea- I think it would be lighter and you could paint it if you want. They look really awesome though and it's a cute idea.
I'd recommend making the headband wayyyy in advance so you can try it out and make sure it's not too heavy or doesn't fall apart after a bit. (I speak from woeful experience!)

looking at some real antlers right now and yours look great. antlers are sort of velvety before they fall off so could you cover them in some sort of suede.velour fabric?????

This might have already been said...but i'm lazy and i dont feel like reading all the comments. In the picture the girl's antlers come from the top of her head...do you plan on putting them on the top of your head? or where you are holding them?

how about wrapping them in felt? or maybe ribbon? If they are too heavy to attach and wear try making them out of bendy drinking straws, i must say they look great and that is such a fabulous idea. (Pipe cleaners might work out well too)

I like what you have going there! Very cute.

Ideas of things to cover your form:

Air dry clay (The crayola stuff is really light!)
Paper clay (I'm sure you can find a recipe)
Spackle (It's sandable. I know someone who finished all of his paper mache masks it this)
Latex (you can get it in small jars at Michaels)

Super cute idea. I'd definitely suggest paper-mache as well. You might try using aluminum foil as a base for paper-mache because it's easily moldable and very light weight. If you do the top coat of paper mache with either toilet paper or paper towel, you should be able to get a pretty nice texture.

and, not that it really matters, but you know that only male deer actually have antlers, right?  ;)

This will be super cute. the only thing I can think of not mentioned all ready is a light brushing of a brown paint on top. I think if you apply it then wipe it off, or even dry brush it on that would work. Just to kind of fill in the deep sections and make it more real. They're very close right now just not quite 100%.
All the other ideas sound good so far to even the texture out a bit, and on the note of velvety that someone mentioned. rather than put felt on them I think if you cover them with clay and then wrap the felt around it, and take it off to give it the texture it would be perfect!

Thank you all so much! I'm happy that it's being so well received!
I feel like I'm just copying though... it's not really "my idea" >_<
Now once this is all complete I have to find something to actually do on Halloween...
Anyone know of anything exciting in the Philly area? I'm not from around here.

I've made some recent purchases, like some "rigid wrap plaster cloth" which I have never used, along with some dowels. But I'm not sure how good of a plan that is... but I have the supplies so I may as well try.
I'll just have many pairs, and hang them on the wall or something...

and on the note of velvety that someone mentioned. rather than put felt on them I think if you cover them with clay and then wrap the felt around it, and take it off to give it the texture it would be perfect!
THIS. I love this!

Thank you! :3 I'm pretty sure I have some of the crayola lying around.

..do you plan on putting them on the top of your head? or where you are holding them?
Hm... this is a good question. I'm not sure yet. I guess once they're done I will just fiddle with them and make something work.

I'd recommend making the headband wayyyy in advance so you can try it out and make sure it's not too heavy or doesn't fall apart after a bit. (I speak from woeful experience!)
Good plan! I never plan ahead for things like this, so thank you for encouraging me.

This is what I was planning on trying. We'll see.

BONUS QUESTION: any good ideas of what my boyfriend could dress up as? I said a hunter and he said "ehhh..."

I would think that with some poly clay and some glue you could make a nice tight holder for the antlers to go on the headband - just wrap the clay around the headband and make a cylinder sticking out big enough to fit the antlers tightly. Might not be comfortable, but in theory it's effective.

...socket system... like how?

well when i made a mask with huge horns on it, i made a socket system

think like.....a part of a toilet paper tube, that the horns themselves were wedged into, rather than just being attached onto the mask with tabs. but on a much smaller scale, obviously. i used a wire mesh to form the sockets, and shaved down the foam (that was my sculpting material) to fit tightly into the socket. kind of like how pvc tube fits together i guess you could say?

i wish i had pics, but i can't find them just now

i would think that using a good strong glue (probably epoxy) and a bit of fine mesh would work ok. i kind of feel like this system spreads out the weight a bit, and makes your antlers/horns WAY less likely to just fall off the headband/mask. then you can wrap around the whole thing to hide the join, but it adds strength
i can draw a pic if you want me to, to help explain what i mean.

i really probably over complicate things, but i love costuming and i always want to make sure it's sturdy and well done :) and i love over complicating.....haha

perhaps your boyfriend could be some other woodland critter, a fox, a frog, a raccoon, a martin, or ermine, bunny etc. :)

I was thinking if you get a plastic headband and carefully drill holes in it where you want the antlers to mount, then when you cover or re-make them with clay, make a large nub at the bottom that will look flush with the headband. Deer have little nubs where the antlers attach to the head called buds I think. So add this to the bottom of the antler and put a small bit of wooden dowel in the middle to drill into after baking.
Drill the hole in it and use a nice flat screw to screw the antlers to the headband from the bottom of the headband up.

If you use an air dry clay then ignore the baking part and just allow it to air dry first. :)

I'm also going as a deer, I'm making small polymer clay horns threaded through clear elastic since does usually only have small horns when they do. My boyfriend is going as a hunter who fell in love with the doe (me) and couldn't brig himself to shoot it :)

Good plan, I like the bf idea.
And I think being a deer is like... the "thing" this year, lol.
I had never heard of anyone dressing up as one until a month or two ago.

Another idea to attach them to the headband would be to make them (if your remaking them) around the top of a thick but short screw*see bottom.*

Then carefully drill a hole in a large plastic headband that is the right size for your screw. Afterwards find the nut in the right size (and the thinnest one you can get...this part will be near your head) so that you can just pop the antlers in and screw them down.

I would also add  thin layer of upholstery foam (think padded helmets) to the underside of the headband. You can usually color that stuff to match other things and it would help if the only nuts you can find are the standard ones...which would hurt against your head. The stiffer the foam the better by the way, you don't want memory foam that is just going to smoosh down.

This is an adorable idea! And yes while deer with antlers are male...thats too cute a costume to pass up!
A faun/ satyr is also a male historically, but I've seen some cute girl fauns ^-^ So go for it.

*You could use a taller one...but then you have to mold around the majority of the screw...which actually might work better for stability...I don't know, I'd have to play with it.*

Those are adorable antlers!  I really like the variation in width that the tape (?) gives them - it has a very organic shape.  It sounds like it'll be a really cute costume.  I hate to be the awkward person here, but I just wanted to point out... only male deer have antlers.  Does just have little nubs and ears.  Just a minor detail; not everyone knows, so you would probably be cool with them anyway if you wanted to wear them.  Regardless, great construction!

i read your post yesterday and today i stumbled across a crown-thing i made some time ago.
so i've got another idea :-)

i would use some thicker wire to form a headband/wrap it around an existing plastic one and form a "frame" for the antlers that way.
like taking a twig and wrapping the wire around that and the headband-thing. then you could build your antlers around that just like you already did. or you could use what you already have but remove the tape at the end of the antlers and then wrapping the wire and taping/papier macheeing over that.
i did something similar to that, but i used some sort of antennae instead of antlers. it worked fine i added loops of wire to the headband so i was able to use bobby pins for extra security. it was very durable.

i hope that's not too confusing and maybe it helps you a bit.

huh! i would never do alice okay maybe i will... but i don't go for the classical anything. ever! if someone said i have to be say a character from....the wizard of oz then i'd choose the fat mayor of munchintown
not dorothy

or the tin man
or scarecrow
or a which
but a short fat dude

me still love costume. i've got it bookmarked for whenever i need it
please keep us updated!

Haha, yeah. I know this, but I feel that if I didn't have antlers, I would look like... a puppy or something. The antlers are going to make it rock!

Another idea to attach them to the headband would be to make them (if your remaking them) around the top of a thick but short screw

i think, if you put holes in a plastic head band, and make the antlers with a wire sticking out the bottom, insert, curl wire as shown and reinforce with tape it should work!

I didn't read through the entire post - so apologies if this has been mentioned.

The shape is great and it reminds me of a project my kids help me with involving masking tape and shoe polish.  We cover bottles and frames with masking tape and then rub paste shoe polish over them.  The paste shoe polish might be an option for covering the antlers.

Also, in the pic, I think the antlers are wrapped in her hair, at least that's what it looks like to me.

Good luck and have a Happy Halloween!

Oh DEER! I love this costume idea, I actually thought of it on my own (before reading all of your wonderful ideas online) a couple of weeks back. I'm still trying to get my boyfriend to be the hunter...(don't think it's gonna happen tho. oh well)

Anyway, the girl's makeup in that one pic is amazing. Definitely a great jumping off point. When I showed my boyfriend this thread, he was in shock because he knows that girl AND the guy in that picture. How crazy is that?? He used to work with the girl. Nuts.

So, Deer friend, I just picked up some rigid-wrap from the store. I'm sure you've got the antlers covered by this point, but i thought i'd pass this advice on.

Any ideas for makeup yet? I'm not sure what kind to buy...any advice would be greatly appreciated!

As for Halloween in the Philly area (I just moved over the bridge to SJ but up until a month ago I lived on South St!), not really sure what's going on. I'm traveling to NY to see the band moe. Should be pretty sick.

Lots of love!

I am going to be a deer, thanks to this thread. I was having a nervous breakdown and stressing about costumes, and thank god you had this idea.

I made antlers out of tinfoil, duct tape and model magic. Then I painted them with several shades of brown/tan/white. They look really realistic. I attached them to a brown ribbon, because I thought it looked cute.

I am wearing a little brown dress, brown sweater and brown tights. I made ears and spots out of felt.

Also, I bought Ben Nye face paint and it is so amazing and perfect.

My boyfriend is going as a hunter, because he just has to wear a plaid shirt, silly hat and suspenders, and he doesn't love to dress up.

Thanks for the idea, I can't wait to see deer pictures!

Hey! Crazy, I just finished a deer costume yesterday and wore it out last night.. then found this posting today. I was going to be a skunk, since I found this awesome fur, but then I randomly went into a home decor/dollar store (yes, these combos exist) trying to find a pumpkin carving kit. I instead came across individual antlers that are meant to be used as hooks. They were small and not too heavy, and looked so real, so I had to switch my idea up.

I ended up being kinda more of a reindeer/caribou/elk deer.. since I still wanted to use the fur I originally bought for my skunk costume.

Anyway, my antlers ended up being perfect and completely sturdy on my head. The key is for them not to be too heavy, or too wide. Mine stuck pretty straight up.

Here's how i did them:
The antlers I bought were flared at the base, kind of like real antlers. I had a bunch of those thin, plastic headbands that you buy at the dollar store on hand, so I attempted to use those as my base. I positioned and hot-glued the antlers between two headbands (using tons of glue, just in case!), so that they sat a bit above the flared base of the antlers and kind of pinned them in. then i wrapped brown ribbon as tightly as possible around the headbands, between the antlers, and down a bit on either side. Then I hot-glued the ends of the two headbands together so that they formed one big headband, hot-glued ribbon to the ends, wrapped it around the ends to secure, with extra hanging off so I could tie the headband tight around my head when I wear it.

Then I styled my hair, pinning the front of my hair back over the headband, so that you couldn't see it at all.
Ta da! secure antlers!

so, i wound up being a last minute deer too!!

Sorry, I can't post the photos directly in this thread/only links since I haven't made enough posts on this site.

Thank you so much for this thread. I ended up with an awesome costume that I love because of it.

I found this post on Friday when I was looking for ideas on how to make my own antlers. I was just going to do a woodland nymph sort of thing, but once I saw the make-up in the original post, I knew I was going to go the whole 9 yards with the look.

I ended up making my horns out of Ultralight Sculpey, which I highly recommend for projects like this. It was easy to mold (almost too easy, so I put a bendable wire in the center to give it some  support while it was baking). I also used the wire that stuck out the bottom for the initial attachment to the headband I got, which had three bands on it. Before baking, I fluted the bottom of the antlers and added pin holes to the base, so I could eventually "sew" it onto the headband. If I did it again, I would recommend making an impression of the headband on the bottom before baking as well. I accidentally left my bottoms convex, and it didn't cause any problems, but it would have looked better/been easier to make it fit better directly.

Once it baked (it took about 30 minutes on 275 since it was a bit thick), I painted it with watered down acrylic paint.

My boyfriend helped me with the make up (which of course I directly copied from here). I'd also added a couple of ears made with sticky backed-felt stuck to a piece of faux fur material cut in the shape of ears. I folded the base, sewed a few stitches to give it dimension and stuck it on my head with a bobby pin on each side. The antlers and ears were so light, I often forgot I had them on all night.

thast my friend amber, she was a raccoon :P (i did her makeup!)
my costume was my antlers which i made by getting real twigs from my backyard, and i wrapped them in electrical tape, then used the same tape to tape them to a black headband.
i wore a brown tank top with a brown cardigan over it. and i did my makeup based on the photo in the original post, i then used some white fuzzy fabric i had in my stash to make my kneck piece, and i also made a fluffy tail :)

for the makeup, i used  mixture of eyeshadow and eye drops, it worked SO well!!!

OP is back!!! I'm so surprised everyone ended up being deer, it makes me so happy!!! :D
I ended up getting gross-sick and not having time to get aaaanything done.
So 2 days before Halloween I ended up making some antlers out of Model Magic, since it was what I had lying around. I made ears, and a tail too!
I hot glued the ears and antlers to an old headband. I liked the way it turned out, because I ended up putting in a lot less effort then I wanted to.
:D

My boyfriend was Speed Racer!
