Title: to face or not to face....
Post by: momcuellar on September 13, 2009 02:13:39 PM
I just finished my first African folklore embroidered piece.  I call her trian-girl, latina on the move.  I want to make a whole series, like this rock girl, fun in the sun, out at the mall, etc.  Here's my dilemma, I have no talent making faces.  The faces always seem to turn out scary.  What do you think, should I face or not face.

Here's a close-up of the dress

and finally, the faces i can draw half decently

When I decide, this block will be rag quilted on a red velvety pillow for my studio.  Stay tuned for the further adventures of Trian-girl, Latina on the Move!!

Your piece is lovely! I like your mix of stitching and beading. What are you going to do with it?

I've always had problems with faces too. :/

If you do decide to put a face on her, I'd do a simpler version of one of your sketches. The eyelashes could be had to do in the space that you have. :)

I vote no face. I love it as is. ;)

i'm gonna appliqué it onto a pillow, rag quilt style.  I thought about the eyelashes being too small to stitch.   and, i'm ashamed to admit it, i embroidered about two faces already, and they were scary, to say the least.

I am going towards the no face for this one.  but, then again...

I vote no face. The position of her body already tells us so much. The face would just be overwhelming. I like how the eyes are not drawn to the face, but to the beautiful dress.

Awesome job, I love the colors.

I think I like it with no face. It's very pretty.

If I had to pick a face, I'd say the one with the almost closed eyes...that one is wonderful.

Faces are not easy to do...Kittykill and I were commiserating on that just a little while ago!  I find it's the eyes that make or break a piece. I have found that using just one strand of floss and the tiniest stitches the fabric will take work best.

Perhaps just brows and a suggestion of a mouth?

I really like this - love the dress. My vote is also for no face. Or if you do stitch one - a very simple face. Something like an O for a mouth and just slit eyes.
