Title: Day of the Dead paintings
Post by: hotbettie on September 08, 2009 08:10:46 PM
I love the Day of the Dead! To get myself in the mood this year I've been painting on blocks of wood that I had left over from a different project. Here's a brief history of Day of the Dead from wikipedia.

"The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos or All Souls' Day) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on the 2nd of November in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints' Day which occurs on Nov 1st and All Souls' Day which occurs on Nov 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.
Scholars trace the origins of the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years, and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl."

My style is a mixture of Day of the Dead, Mexican folk art and classic tattoos. These are painted on blocks of wood that are a foot square and 1.5 inches deep using acrylic paint.

Oh! I love these! I have been obsessed with day of the dead for a while too. I started making sugar skull felt brooches (and i just sold my first one, woot)

I am going to attempt something like this, I have a left over piece of wood.

Did you find problems decided on which swirls to use? I can never make up my mind!
