Title: Stately Shrug (with pattern)
Post by: Stitchoramamama on April 11, 2005 01:32:36 PM
So, I've been staring at this beautiful hank of Colinette Giotto that Karen sent me a while back and decided that I must make inot something!  I decided to turn it into a little design challenge for myself and I'm pretty happy with the result - a cap sleeved shrug!

I decided I wanted a little shrug to go over some of my fitted tanks and cap sleeved tees.  I wanted to knit it in all one piece, so there'd be minimal finishing.  I think it makes great use of a small amount of such a luxurious yarn, especially since the colors in Colinette yarns are so fantastic.

Stately Shrug

A cap sleeved shrug, knit in one piece (hooray for minimal finishing!) knit up in a luxurious and shiny ribbon yarn.

Materials:

Yarn: 1 hank Colinette Giotto - pictured in Florentina (48) - (50% Cotton, 40% Rayon, 10% Nylon) wound into 2 balls.

Needles: US10.5

Gauge: 16 Rows, 16st = 4" in St st

Finished Measurements (not including cap sleeves): 8" long, 18"wide

Get started!

CO 65 st.

Knit in St st until piece measures 4.5" (18 rows), ending with WS row.
Row 19-27 ODD: K2, M1, K to last 2 st, M1, K2 (75 st)
Row 20 and ALL EVEN ROWS: Purl
Row 29: K8, M1, K to last 8, M1, K8

Begin Slip Stitch edging as so:
Row 31: slip 1st st knitwise, K to last st, bring yarn to front, sl last st kwise
Row 33: K
Row 35: slip 1st st knitwise, K to last st, bring yarn to front, sl last st kwise
Row 37: K
Row 39: slip 1st st knitwise, K to last st, bring yarn to front, sl last st kwise
Row 41: K26, join new ball of yarn, BO 25 st, K26

From this point on, work left and right sides at the same time.

Row 43: (FIRST SIDE:) sl 1st, K to last 4 st, K2tog, K2 / (SECOND SIDE:) K2, ssk, K to last st, bring yarn to front, sl st kwise
Row 45: K to last 4 st, K2tog, k2 / K2, ssk, K to end
Row 47: sl 1st, K to last 4 st, K2tog, K2 / K2, ssk, K to last st, bring yarn to front, sl st kwise
Row 49: K
Row 51: sl 1st, K to last 4 st, K2tog, K2 / K2, ssk, K to last st, bring yarn to front, sl st kwise
Row 53: K8, ssk, K to end / K to last 10st, K2tog, K8
Row 55-63 (ODD): K2, ssk, K to last 4 st, K2tog, K2 / K2, ssk, K to last 4 st, K2tog, K2

Continue to work neck decreases as so...
Row 65-75 (ODD): K to last 4st, K2tog, K2 / K2, ssk, K to end
Row 77: K1, K2tog, K1 / K1, ssk, K1
Rows 79 and 81: K
Row 82: P
BO remaining 3 st.

Finishing: Fold piece over (wrong sides facing) and mattress stitch sides together from the bottom up. Since you are creating your armholes here, use your own judgement on how far to sew up on each side. Weave in ends and it's pret-a-porter!

i'm not so hot at altering patterns, but i'd love to make this with maybe a bit longer sleeves... any suggestions for adding a few more inches? cap sleeves tend to hit at an unflattering point for me.

OOOOH!  Yes please, Sexie_Leopard!  I'd love to see what yours looks like!  Pretty please with a cherry on it, post a pic! (can you tell I'm psyched to see someone make something I designed?)

Karenie - I think your best bet to make non-capped sleeves, might be to knit this pattern, leaving out the increases (and slip stitch edging) for the sleeves - leaving you with a straight piece on the sides (keep the neck decreases for the front).  Then, knit little sleeves for yourself!  You could do it by either making separate pieces and sewing to the body - or (my fave) pick up stitches around the armholes and knit the piece until it is as long as you like.  Then sew a seam up the side!  Hmm.... This has me thinkin......  Maybe I want another like this!  ;)  Let me know how you make out!

Is this pattern easy? I made "boobholder" and I F'd it up bigtime, it doesn't fit me at all.
