Details of swap:

This swap is for book lovers to have their own book club, mixed with a craft swap! To join this swap you need to want to discuss the book we are reading together. We will do this via a closed group on Facebook. You must have a Facebook account or get one to join this swap. We will have discussion topics and questions on the Facebook group, as well as some fun off-topic chit-chat to get to know your partner and fellow group members.

To ensure that everyone has a book they want to read, please sign up for the group that most interests you. After sign-ups, each group will vote for the final book. Each group will read 1 book from the initial choices. Please don’t sign up unless you are willing to read any of the books in that particular group. Voting is over and books are chosen. Please sign up for the book and group you want.

We will try to stay on schedule of reading about a quarter of the book every 2 weeks. Please try to check in and be part of the discussion at least once a week. This isn’t a requirement as far as feedback for the swap, but it is kinda the point of the book club!  :)

We may also try to occasionally set up group chats. This may be tricky to organize, but even a few people together in a live chat is fun!

This swap requirements will be 2 medium items and 1 small item, crafted around your book and your partner’s tastes.

Group and Book Options:

Classics: The Remains of the Day

1984 – George Orwell
This vision of a nightmare future gave us "Big Brother", "doublethink" and the "Thought Police."

Sula – Toni Morrison
Describes the friendship between Sula and Nel, two intelligent black women, who are poor.

Catch-22 – Joseph Heller
Outrageous humor exposes war's folly in WWII Italy.

The Remains of the Day – Kazuo Ishiguro
An elderly butler's life of devotion and self-denial leads to painful reflection.

To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee
Ten-year-old Scout sees her lawyer father combat racism with compassion in a Mississippi town.

Current Bestselling Fiction: Best Friends Forever--A Novel

The Secret Life of Bees – Sue Monk Kidd
Fourteen-year-old Lily Owens lost her beloved mother when she was only four--under tragic circumstances clouded by time and secrecy. She later found a fiercely protective "stand-in," her abusive father's outspoken housekeeper, Rosaleen. Ignoring differences in age and color--and the fact that racial hatred seethed during the summer of 1964 in rural South Carolina--these two unlikely companions set off on a seemingly aimless pilgrimage that ends at the home of a trio of eccentric bee-keeping black sisters.

Best Friends Forever, A Novel – Jennifer  Weiner
Popular television personality Valerie Adler turns to her long-forgotten, Illinois hometown friend Addie Downs when she runs into a bit of trouble involving betrayal and loyalty, family history and small-town secrets.

The Help – Kathryn Stockett
In Jackson, Mississippi, in 1962, there are lines that are not crossed. With the civil rights movement exploding all around them, three women start a movement of their own, forever changing a town and the way women--black and white, mothers and daughters--view one another.

Love in the Time of Cholera – Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Set on the Caribbean coast of South America, this love story brings together Fermina Daza, her distinguished husband, and a man who has secretly loved her for more than fifty years.

Non-Fiction: NO LONGER A CHOICE

The Absolute True Story of a Part Time Indian – Sherman AlexieBudding cartoonist Junior leaves his troubled school on the Spokane Indian Reservation to attend an all-white farm-town school where the only other Indian is the school mascot.

Not Buying it-My Year Without Shopping – Judith LevineThis cold-turkey confession by an award-winning journalist follows her progress — and inevitable
relapses — over an entire year of not spending.

The United States of Arugula – David KampThe wickedly entertaining, hunger-inducing, behind-the-scenes story of the revolution in American food that has made exotic ingredients, celebrity chefs, rarefied cooking tools, and destination restaurants familiar aspects of our everyday lives.

Service Included- Four Star Secrets of an Eavesdropping Waiter – Phoebe DamroschForget the subtitle — Ms. Damrosch never names names. What she does do is tell a delightful story of the opening of upscale New York City restaurant Per Se, a restaurant from uber-famous restauranteur, Thomas Keller.

Science Fiction: Doomsday Book

The Hammer of God – Arthur C Clarke
An asteroid is on a collision course with Earth, and while a starship tries to redirect it, religious fanatics engage in sabotage to ensure that their predicted Apocalypse will come.

The Time Traveler's Wife -- Audrey Niffenegger
An imaginative extension of everyday life, the story asks: What if two people who loved each other deeply, married, and faced a life in which one person remained constant while the other slipped fluidly in and out of time?

Ender’s Game – Orson Scott Card
The Earth is under attack from aliens known as "buggers." The only hope is a brilliant general named Ender Wiggin. The only problem is that he is a child.

Doomsday Book – Connie Willis
Kirvin, a History student at Oxford in 2048, is sent back in time to complete her thesis and mistakenly thrust into the midst of the Black Plague in this work about human struggle and redemption.

Fantasy: Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass

The Once & Future King -- T.H. White
The magical epic of King Arthur and his shining Camelot, of Merlyn and Guinevere, of beasts who talk and men who fly, of wizardry and war.

The Eyes of the Dragon – Stephen King
A kingdom is in turmoil as the old king dies and his successor must do battle for the throne. Pitted against an evil wizard and a would-be rival, Prince Peter makes a daring escape and rallies the forces of Good to fight for what is rightfully his.

Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass – Lewis Carroll
The excitement begins when the well-mannered and sensible Alice follows an elusive White Rabbit down the hole to Wonderland.

Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell – Susanna Clarke
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, but by the early 1800s they have lost the ability to perform magic.

Short Story Collections: Carried Away

Lost in the City – Edward P. Jones
Young and old struggle for spiritual survival against the often crushing obstacles of the inner city in these 14 moving stories of African American life in Washington, D.C. Traveling street by street through the nation's capital, Jones introduces a wide range of characters, each of whom has a distinct way of keeping the faith.

Necronomicon: The Best of HP Lovecraft -- HP Lovecraft
Lovecraft's astonishing tales blend elements of horror, science fiction, and cosmic terror that are as powerful today as they were when they were first published.

Carried Away –Alice  Munro
Munro’s incomparable empathy for her characters, the depth of her understanding of human nature, and the grace and surprise of her narrative add up to a richly layered and capacious fiction. Like the World War I soldier in the title story, whose letters from the front to a small-town librarian he doesn’t know change her life forever, Munro’s unassuming characters insinuate themselves in our hearts and take permanent hold.

A Good Man is Hard to Find, and Other Stories – Flannery O’Connor
With an keen eye for the dark side of human nature, an amazing ear for dialogue, and a necessary sense of irony, Flannery O'Conner exposes the underside of life in the rural south of the United States.

Oooooo! I'm interested, All the books in scifi look really intersting! I've read Ender's Game and it is AWESOME, my favorite book ever (there is a whole series you know, and a spinoff series)!

I saw the preview for The Time Traveler's Wife movie, and now i want to read it, but I have a feeling that it would break my heart, and I'd have that weak feeling inside my chest for weeks.

I'm going to college in the fall and I'm not sure how long I'll have to craft. Even if I Decide not to join the swap I'm totally going to read all the scifi books.

Oooh, good book choices!!!  I've read about half of those, and I'm reading Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell right now!!!

Oh, and A-A, The Timetravellers Wife is really awesome, but it will break your heart.  I havent seen the movie, but there is no way that it could possibly do justice to the book.

I saw previews of the movie in the theater.  There is no way I can read the book or see the movie.  I would be a blubbering idiot by the end.

I'm waiting on some feedback and then I'll join up.

Each catagory has at least 1 book I'd love to read, and several I've never heard of.  I've already written down names so I can request them @ the library ;D

I think that's ok...we could always post the discussion questions within the thread so you could write up your response ahead of time, then when you are able to get on facebook you can just copy and paste your response and spend your time on there reading other people's responses. We're still trying to find the best way to do this...thanks for the input!  :)

Oooh, good book choices!!!  I've read about half of those, and I'm reading Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell right now!!!

How is that going for you?  I had a really easy time putting it down, and a tough time  picking it back up, though I did finish it before returning it to the library.

I don't have a facebook either.  I think that solidifies my geezer status, as just about everyone my teenagers met at camp has one.  :)

I tried reading it a couple of years ago, but I couldn't get into it.  Then I picked it up again earlier this week, and it just seemed to click!  I'm in a bit of a dry spot right now, but I'm hoping it will pick up again in a few pages...it seems like more plot is brewing.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be able to join, because I don't have a facebook thing, and I really don't want to get one.  I'll read along in spirit, though!  I'm interested to see which of the books you guys pick.  I LOVED Ender's Game, and I got my hubby to read it too, and he also loved it.  I've read all but one of the "classics".

I really believe that Ender's Game is the best book ever!! You know right that there is a whole series, and another spin off series about Bean? All the books are good and I recomend reading them all!!

Would it be possible to create threads in the Off-topic Chit-chat area for book discussion instead of using facebook? It seems like several people won't be joining because of not having accounts. Maybe each group could decide how to communicate? Just throwing out some ideas- feel free to tell me to shut my mouth.  :)

Well, the off-topic chit chat is only for Friends of Craftster, so it has limitations, too, if I'm remembering correctly.

*looks around*  Of course, so far, I'm the only one so far in the thread who's not one at the moment...   :-[

Out of all the books, the only one I refuse to read is Once and Furture king.  I've had the book for about 10 yrs, and I've picked it up and put it down too many times to count.  I can't get into it.  It makes me sad because I love just about every book I've read about King Arthur and Camelot :'(

I had to take a class on the Arthurian legend and we had to read "L'Morte de Arthur," "Mists of Avalon," "The Once & Future King," and like 6 versions of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." That class (and subsequently my grade) were the only things that helped me get through "The Once and Future King." It's a good book but it's very, very slooooow. While the other books offer spins on the legend, TO&FK is pretty ho-hum. And let's face it, by the time you get to college you're so familiar with the Arthurian legend you need some spin & spice!

I had the same problem with Once and Future King.  I think I also had trouble with Mary Stewart's Arthurian legend (3 different books, only title I can remember is The Crystal Cave), even though I like lots of her other books. I'd love just about anything from Lois McMaster Bujold, or Terry Pratchett to be added to the fantasy or sci fi list. They're both amazing authors.

I'm leaning towards the short story group (even though I still don't have a Facebook account*). It's the only category where I haven't read at least one of the books already (some categories I've read more than one). Plus, school will be starting up pretty soon, and I can read short stories in short sittings. I tend to get sucked into a story and nothing else gets done until I finish it. So, short stories help me to avoid that ;)

* Would a Yahoo group be a better option? It seems a bit more "anonymous," which is the thing that concerns me about Facebook- it's such an extensive network...

If you're bothered by the privacy thing, there's a way to where you can make your facebook profile private and unlisted. I have real life friends that I cannot find on facebook using their real full names, email address, or anything and they DO in fact have facebook accounts. I can look into this further for you and give you instructions on how to do this.

Edit: Just to clarify, with your facebook completely private like this you will be able to add friends and groups, but people cannot use facebook's search engine to find you by your name, username, email address, or city/state.

Edit Part 2: Facebook, under "privacy settings" you can make different parts of your profile information available to friends only. You can also make your profile unsearchable like i mentioned. You can even block what kind of posts (like status updates, wall posts) people see on their news feed. It does look like you can lock your facebook down to where only the friends you confirm to be friends can see your information. So you won't get a friend request or messages from your first boyfriend in 7th grade or something like that lol

Thanks for that added info on Facebook. I'm a public school teacher, and our union advises us against joining things like MySpace and Facebook because it doesn't take much to cause problems. Things taken out of context can cause an unbelievable stink...

If I have a lot of control over who can see things (If I've added people as friends, how much of my stuff can their other friends see?), and what gets posted on my site, I'd feel a little better about joining...

i added a bit more information. Also, you don't have to fill out the entire profile. You can just fill out the basic information like your name.

Edit: one more edit, there are specific options on who can see what. You can set it to "everybody and networks", "friends and friends of friends", and "Friends only".
Friends only will lock it down to just your friends.

Okay, I'm almost convinced ;)

My sister has been bugging me to join, and even my mom is on it! I do feel behind the times because I'm not on it, but I had a friend who lost her job over a blog post, so I get nervous...

Oh i totally understand your fears. And i think thats why facebook allows you to lock your profile down as much as you want. Like i said I have a friend, i know her full name, where she went to school, her hometown, email address, etc. but I cannot find her on facebook yet i know for a fact she is on facebook. She uses it to keep in touch with her friends from college and that's it. So you can be on facebook and no one would know besides the people you want to find you.

I love The Crystal Cave lol!

All these suggestions and input are great! We are going to try this first round on Facebook and see how it goes. You can always join facebook under an alias, you don't really have to use your true full name.

Nymeria~did you have to read....shoot I forgot the name, something with a P? Super boring Arthurian book, like middle english.

@CraftADDchick -- In addition to what DesignVigilante mentioned, our group would be "secret" so no one will see that you have joined, or what you write. So Student A from your class (hell, even your mum & sister) would not know you're in a book group, and what you were posting.

Facebook is mildly frightening when I see how many people have their profiles/information/etc. set to "Public." But fortunately they have made ways to guard your security and privacy. And being smart with whom you are friends and what you write to whom. I knew a guy who lost his job for writing work-related things on his page when he was "friends" with most everyone in his office. Genius at work. >_<

ETA: MareMare, do you mean Perceval? We read parts of it. Without going into literary theory, my professor did not like that story very much, lol. So we skimmed pieces.

I am seriously thinking about joining this. I've never been in a book club before, so from that aspect it would be interesting, and the only book on the list that I've read is Doomsday Book.* Several are on my "to read" list, and a couple are even on my nightstand right now. I am a little curious about how it would work with all the different groups of swappers reading books from different groups. What if there's only a couple of people signed up for a particular group? Seems like the discussion would be more lively with more participants. Should we have a second choice group?

*ETA: Just remembered I also read To Kill A Mockingbird, but it was my freshman year in HS, so it's been a while.

I'm hoping for  at least 4-6 people for each group..there is a spot on the sign-up to list your first and second choice groups. If a group only gets a couple people then we'll drop that group. I might read more than one book to add more to the discussion too, and I'll ask Nymeria to as well lol! (I like to volunteer her for stuff!)  :)

There will be threads for each book so it won't get confusing :)

I think I am going to have to sign up for this one!! I have always wanted to join a book club, but most of the ones at my library are during the day. It will be really hard to pick which group I want to join- I may just have to join more than one :-)

Question: If I do say that I would like to join more than one group, does that mean I would craft for more than one partner? I would assume yes, but I wanted to double check.

I would too but i think it would depend on the final book list that is decided on. There are some books on the list that I might not be in to enough to craft for.

Same here. I've decided instead of limiting the number of swaps, to aim for smaller swaps instead of larger ones, that way even if i have a full load they aren't all the crazy hectic ones like MAF, IYP and GMT (im in all three at the moment but will be down to just 1 soon).

We're up to 15 members! Yay! I've sent everyone who has signed up and been approved a FB group invite, I think most of you have joined. If you didn't receive it (and I just sent for the latest 3 a couple minutes ago) please pm myself or Nymeria and we can send you a group link. The group is "closed" at the moment so we can invite people via this way if necesary (sometimes it won't invite via email addresses, and the only other way is if you are on my friends list...I don't want to make everyone have to be my friend lol!). After sign-ups close we will change it to a secret group.

If you haven't already please go in and read the discussion post!  ;)

Okay, fellow English major here. I actually teach 9th grade English and have a blog called "Crafty English Teacher". If this isn't right up my alley, I don't know what is! I just hope that the book chosen by my group isn't a book I've already read. However, I could skim through it again and still talk about it if that happened.

I'm in!

And, I'm secretly hoping for 1 book in particular in each of my group choices. I can't wait for us to decide what we'll be reading ;) I want to go onto Amazon and buy them all... just in case... but I definitely can't afford that ;D

once you find the page I suggest you bookmark it, FB is more difficult to navigate than it has to be I think!

On the lower left side at the bottom it says applications, click on that and it will pop up on the left. Pick groups from the list and you should see your groups on the top right.

if you want, you can rerarrange your bookmarks at the bottom of the screen. When you click on apps and it pops up, drag "groups" into the bookmark area and then it will be on your home page at the bottom.

Since we have 16 people so far, and nobody has chosen non-fiction as their first choice, and only 3 as their second choice, I am gonna go ahead and knock that one off the list. If you had it as your second choice you can pm me a new second choice or we can deal with that down the line!

*** Organizer Note ***

I will be posting this here and on the FaceBook thread:

In effort to have books ready to buy/check-out in a timely fashion, we're going to start voting for books. Please PM me ON CRAFTSTER the book you want to read for your FIRST CHOICE GROUP!

To keep it simple, please send ME (NYMERIA) a PM with the Message Title: Book Vote, and just the title of the book you want to read and your FIRST CHOICE GROUP.Example:

Title: Book Vote

Body: Classics -- Remains of the Day

<Your Real Name>

Voting Closes August 23 at 23:30 PM (see notes below on why). I will have the book selections posted by August 25th so that on the day sign-ups end, we can begin getting our books!!

PLEASE VOTE by sending me a PM in Craftster!!! (it's easier for me to keep track in Craftster, lol)

Notes:

In the event of a tie, I will literally flip a coin; however, if person A votes for book 1, person B votes for book 2 and person C votes for book 3, I will send out a message to people in that group to choose between the three. If NO decision can be made, I'll flip a dice (being an RPG-er, I have many sets of D-20's... ;D) and we'll go from there. This is the reason I am closing voting a couple days early, so that everyone can get their books in a timely fashion! :)

PLEASE NOTE ONLY PM VOTES WILL BE COUNTED, IF YOU DON'T PM ME, IT WON'T COUNT! (this is entirely in effort to keep it fair)

I'm gonna say...dunno. I am leaning towards voting only if you are swapping, since that is a bigger commitment. What do the rest of  you think? Nymeria has final say.

like how I passed the buck there?

Okay, I thought about this and I have come to a decision and I will explain why:

Voting is limited to people participating in the swap.

HOWEVER, in the event of a tie-breaker or a non-decision (each book gets a vote or something) I will recruit the votes of NON-swappers*. How does that sound?

My reasoning is that those who are swapping are going to be crafting something related to said book. Therefore, as MareMare said, it is more of a commitment and the swappers are more "involved," so to speak. This is what seems fairest to me.

*I should note that I will merely ask the non-swappers to cast their vote, I won't ask them to be the tie-breaker (e.g. "It's down to Book 1 and Book 2, which do you want?"). If non-swappers votes don't break the tie (e.g. they vote for another book entirely) we go back to the coin/dice flippin'!

I'm just trying to keep this fair and balanced!!! ;D

Works for me. Non-swappers do get to jump into any group though!

So, when books are chosen I'll change the first post to finalize it, and then anyone else that signs up after that in the last couple days will be signing up for a book, not just a group lol! Yes?

That is correct. I realize that it mildly punishes people who sign up late, but it's what makes it most feasible for everyone to get their book. Because we'll be reading AND crafting, I don't want to eat up 3-4 days of reading/crafting time by deciding on books. :)

Today, I received the 2 books I ordered from the Non-fiction (and now defunct) list. And, I was bad and ordered a few more books, as well. One was from the Fantasy list, and I'm looking forward to reading it. If it's the one chosen, I'll join in on the discussion.

Of course, I have a HUGE stack of books I need to have read before school starts (so I have until the 29th to read them all...). Fortunately, I've mastered the fine art of skimming through the boring stuff ;)

One of the quirks of moving to a really small town is the library experience. Each household gets a card, and you just tell them your name at the counter. My mom was named after one of the librarians; she and my grandma are old friends. I do love the fact that it's a block away from our house, though!

Automated machines at the library? I don't think we have those even at the main branch of the city library! My library card from when I was a kid was good-sized, and it was so exciting to graduate to a small (about 2 X 1 1/2 inches) adult card. I haven't been to that library in ages, but it remains my favorite library. Nowadays, I have a plastic, bar-coded library card that gets me access to our extensive regional llibrary system. If I reserve a book(I mostly use the library in the town I work in), I love to see where they get it from. I get e-mail notifications and everything now. I thought that was cutting edge for the library ;) But automated machines... not yet...

Yeah we've had those for several years. I live in a small big city though lol.  Now they have some kind of fancy system to check out dvd's with a barcode...I think you check them out at the machine (or the desk) and then go scan the dvd shelf with your receipt and it unlocks the dvd. Haven't tried it yet though!

BTW, my library system has really cool book reading lists, that's where I got lots of the books for this swap. Here's the link if you want to check it out, you can find a list for every possible genre or theme you might want!  http://www.multcolib.org/books/lists/adultlists.html

Organizer Update:

*We will be keeping all 5 groups, yay!
*trampycouture will be leading the Best Selling group, thank you!
*freestyle will be co-leading the Short Story group, thank you!
*We have discussion threads for each group, please check 'em out, as well as the other threads, we have an off-topic thread for chit-chat (what did you have for dinner last night?? What wine should you drink with a sci-fi book??)!
*The format I am going for so far is doing main updates on the "wall posts" of the group and then we have the discussion threads to respond to.

At the moment I'm trying to decide if I should sign up for this swap. I know that I am starting college, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be taking a full load to begin with (I'm totally NOT ready for college :-[ I'm so scared, if ony I could actually make money crafting!). I think I have enough supplies to last a life time, so I'm pretty sure I would only need to pay for shipping...which shouldn't be much with two mediums and one small, also it's two months worth of reading/crafting, lately I've been done crafting for swap it two weeks, way before the sendouts, so I think even if I only had a few days a week to craft, I could probably still be done early, but not as early as usual.... I AM SO TORN!!! I'm going to give it another day to think it over.

EDIT: I think it might be a good idea to not look at swaps in the middle of the night when I'm tired and easily persuaded!!! So I'm going to bed now, it's already 4 in the morn...

I hear ya' audio! I'm a bit nervous, since I start a new position at my school. And, somehow, my September, which doesn't look too busy at the moment, has a nasty way of packing itself to the rafters with committments. I'm hoping to read a little, craft a little, read a little, craft a little.

We'd love to have you officially, but if you can only join in for the reading and discussion, well, that's good, too!

If not it's off to the store or library for me.  :)  I don't think there is any way I could go wrong with this swap- all the book selections are terrific and something I could work with craft-wise. And a big thank-you to the organizers for making the book selections a bit before the swap starts- I will be very happy to have my book in hand when sign-ups close so I can get started right away!  :)

I think most people would find the deadlines and such for a book club to be stressful. However, for me, it's a way to keep me accountable for reading the book. If I were reading it on my own, I might be tempted to stop if things don't get interesting quick. But with this, I know others are counting on me to read and discuss it, so it's perfect!

I am not sure if I will end up buying from amazon or how I will obtain the book.

Me too, whenever a friend says, "you can borrow this book"  I always have to say, "thanks but no, because I will end up trashing it and then you'll be mad!"  :-[  I usually get all my hand me down books from my Mom and luckily she says she doesn't need to see them again.

Gone for a day, and I missed some action! I'm excited about the book selections. I have read Doomsday Book before, but it has been a long time, and I don't mind reading it again. BTW, has anyone else read "To Say Nothing of the Dog"? It's a bit more light-hearted than Doomsday book, but also deals with time travel and has a great story.

I'll also read the Jennifer Weiner book. I've read all her books except this one and Little Earthquakes.

Oh, darn, I'll have to go to the library, or maybe, worse yet, to the book store. Woe is me!

I'm really bad at returning library books.. but my office mate/neighbor reminded me I live a block away from one now, so I have no excuse. I'll swing by and check the book out either tonight or tomorrow.

Excited I is.

I'm not very good about returning books either. It's pretty sad since I can renew them online too! I figure when I rack up fines, it is just my donation to the library :(

I love the person who said they trash books. I am totally guilty of that. My husband had just bought the paperback collection of Harry Potter, and one sitting into one of the books, I'd broken the spine. I also get all the pages bent up because I have a bad habit of just dropping the book on the floor when I fall asleep. (I read in bed at night). That's how my husband knows I'm asleep because he hears... "THUMP!"

It's a BIG fight between DH and me, the book destruction, lol. We both read Warhammer 40,000 books (yes, I admit to this), and he will read them first because when he is finished, you wouldn't even know he had TOUCHED the darn thing, let alone read it, lol. He hates reading after me because I'm so rough on them. Ah well... I just told him it means I lurv them more than he does!!  ;D ;D ;D

I know so many people like that, that treat books like...I don't know, freakin treasures. I love my books, but I USE them. If I totally kill it and I love it I will buy another copy. I also drop books on the floor when I fall asleep! Actually lately I drop them behind my head, I actually scooted my mattress down a few inches toward the footboard so there is a four inch gap or so in between the mattress and headboard...there are probably a dozen books in various states of read and un-read back there!

You know, I don't treat my books like they're treasures but at the same time I keep them in fairly good condition, minus a coffee/tea stain here and there lol I just don't understand how you would totally ravage them unless you threw a rock star fit.
One thing that bugs me though is when i get a reject book. Meaning a book that shouldn't have hit the shelves in that condition. (Nymeria is gonna hate me BUT ...) Like the first copy of Angels & Demons that I bought, the pages literally fell off as i turned them! WTF! I should have returned it, but knowing me I prolly threw out the receipt, so i ended up getting a used copy that didn't fall apart for no reason.

I have a bad habit of turning down page corners. I have bookmarks all over the house, but can never seem to find one when I need it. Other then that, my books stay in decent shape, though I will reluctantly admit to the occasional wine stain.

I turn the pages down too, but if people around the house think it looks interesting, they start reading it and dog-ear the pages where they left off as well.

I have gone through several copies of certain books, I try to find the hardback editions of books I really like, because I do the most damage to the spines. Books can only be read a couple times before they fall apart.

My pet peeve book-wise is cheap ink! I hate when I smear ink on a book, how the hell are you supposed to hold it? You get ink all over your thumbs and make a mess in the book!

On a side note, I don't care how "awesome" Dan Brown's books and movies may be, he is dead to me after my first trip to Paris. I have been dreaming of visiting the Louvre since I was 12 and when I went there, it was Dan Brown Everything! They had Dan Brown Audioguides! It kind of ruined the "ooh France" feeling for me, Especially since they are one of those countries who makes sure to make fun of Americans - Why would they let an American take over one of their famous landmarks?

I'm a corner turner as well, although the nice thing about hardbacks is the book cover flap that can be used as a built in bookmark :).  Yes on the winestain...also, occasional water damage from the bathtub!

I'm not a Dan Brown fan anyway, but yikes!  I'm so glad I went to Paris and the Louvre before they did that!  Ridiculous!

I've dropped books in bathwater before, but now when I read in the tub my biggest problem is dripping all over the book I've chucked as far away from the tub as possible (without it opening and getting wrinkled), despite it being a couple feet away. I guess I must shake dry like a dog or something!

I try to be gentle with my books the first time through, but I love the feel of a well-read book in my hands from the library too.

I have to take this moment to brag about an aspect of my job (BELIEVE ME, there ARE downsides). I'm a 9th grade English teacher, so we have something called Sustained Silent Reading  (SSR). For 20 minutes a day, students AND teachers are expected to drop what they're doing and read something for pleasure. A bell rings, and we all start reading! (Sadly, many students hate SSR. When I was a bookworm kid, I would have LOVED it!)

I'm an English teacher, too, and I love me some SSR! My entire building doesn't do it, but I used to work in one that did. They called it DEAR for Drop Everything and Read. We used to call it Stop Drop and Read, but kids would literally fall to the floor when we did that!

Awww.. DEAR sounds way cuter! Believe it or not, there are kids who ask me, "Can I just look at the page and not read it?" I'm like.. geez you might as well learn something.. is it THAT torturous to read?!!

I confess, I'm one of those folks who treat their books like a freakin' treasure because to me, they are! :) As a kid, we didn't have the money to buy books, so every book came from the library (actually, the bookmobile which only came every other week). In school, I used to pore over the book order forms, wishing I could get all of them (and they were only about 50 cents each at that time!).  When I was able to buy my own new, books, it was such a treat! Even now, it's a bit of therapy for me (it's even better than comfort food).

And, I take great pleasure in being the first one to crack open a new book! One thing that grosses me out about library books is finding bits of food, hair and other unidentifiable bits on and in between the pages of them. I try very hard to keep my books clean and neat, and I only lend out books that I don't expect to get back, in case they get mangled.

And.. on the SSR/DEAR thing- I loved it, but it was such a hassle to have to keep stopping to get the non-readers to stop talking or start reading! My last year as a 7th grade homeroom teacher, I gave the kids the option of reading or learning to crochet little blankets for a local no-kill cat shelter. Most of the kids tried the crochet, but a few kept on reading!

this is awesome!  i don't understand people who don't like to read but i guess maybe they don't understand why i don't like something they are into.  but to give the kids that choice, both being productive choices, is fantastic.

I think I ended up delivering 17 little blankets (mostly just big granny squares), so it was pretty cool! I do wish that all of the kids had enjoyed reading as much as I do!

Paste doesn't do it for me. New refrigerator smell is a big one for me, too.

As far as strong childhood smells go, who else remembers your Strawberry Shortcake doll's head? Or Kool-Aid packets and Otter Pops? Heaven!

The problem with the soap scent (one or two companies have it) is that it doesn't smell like Play-Doh. It smells almost identical to Sculpey modeling clay. Which is still a nice smell, but it's NOT Play-Doh!!

It's like passing off a boxed pink zin for a pinot noir; I know the difference, dammit! ;D

(Yes. Yes I just compared clay to wine. It must be time for a glass!!)

my little sister was obsessed with strawberry shortcake and tons of toys, etc.  we teased her, but...when no one was looking my brother and i would sniff her doll's head..hahahaha  i can't believe i remembered that! i guess many memories are associated with smells, especially childhood ones.  and i still love the smell of play-doh.  how about a brand new box of unsharpened pencils? i love that smell too.

Once you're on the group home page look at the "discussion board" area. It will show the last 3 updated topics, and say "displaying 3 of 10 discussion topics" to see the other ones click on the "10 discussion topics" part, or off to the right "see all."  You should be shown all the threads then and click on yours.

Facebook used to send me a notification when a post was added on the boards, but apparently it decided not to do that anymore. I'll start checking it more regularly.

So, over in the short story area, a couple of us have noticed that our book of short stories isn't really inspiring any craft ideas. Is anyone else running into that? Or, is it the nature of the short story that is making it difficult?

Oh wow, us Best Sellers got really lucky then! Our main character knits, paints, draws, and her job is to make the pictures to go on greeting cards, mugs, and decorative spoons.

Although, I also found it hilarious that in the first few pages of the book, the main character goes on a date with a man who seriously believes he was abducted by aliens so I'm kind of thinking of crafting something to do with aliens as a joke.

We in the fantasy group totally scored w/ Alice in Wonderland. I don't even remember what book I voted for, but there is just so much to craft in this one! Not only is the book full of amazing illustrations, iconic images and quotes, and tons of quirky ideas, but there are about a million craft projects out there to hunt through in case anyone was lacking inspiration. I know there have been at least 10 Alice swaps here on craftster anyway. So yeah, we got lucky!

I'm jealous!  Alice in Wonderland would have been great to craft for.  The short stories, although interesting, are just NOT very craft inspired...

Yeah, the best seller section is generally just a chat between me and the group leader lolz Sometimes we get one other person, but for the most part I seem to be the most zealous. I'm on the last like 40 pages of our book even though the reading schedule ends the book the first week of october or so. I'm loving this swap so far, I just wish there was more discussion.

I think all the discussions will pick up as people finish the book. You might want to throw out some discussion questions too to help get the ball rolling, even if there are some posted already, you can never have enough!

You're probably right, Mare. People might be more chatty once they're finished. I have provided questions in addition to those the group leader has been throwing out there, and I've been answering her questions, but no one else is biting.

Hey guys! Just a reminder that sendouts are October 30th and everyone should be getting close to the end of their books and thinking up some ideas/starting to craft! I know some of the groups are definitely harder to craft for than others, so if you are stuck please talk it over with your partner and see what they are ok with. If together the two of you decide on something more loosely based from your book, or a theme in your book, the setting or era, etc, that is great, or if you go for book related items that works, but just please both be on the same...page (oh man). Or, if you are totally stumped and you both agree, your items could be crafted from wists or something else.

Just please follow these 3 guidelines (I know, these should be obvious, but there have been some WEIRD problems popping up in the swap discussion area!):

If deviating from book theme, agree on something with your partner.
You must send 2 mediums and 1 small item.
Your required items must be crafted by you.

Nymeria and I have discussed a little bit that if we do another round we'll make sure we get books that aren't too difficult to craft for and that we have plenty of discussion questions ahead of time. This is the first time out so thanks everybody for being patient as we try to iron everything out!

I'd just like to suggest that if you're totally stumped on making anything having to do with the actual book, I think most of us would enjoy things having to do with books in general like book totes, book marks, etc.

I'm not normally one to be posting snooty comments but we are missing two discussion people and one crafter from our discussion in the Classics book section, so it's two of us, talking to each other, and while I am enjoying the conversation, I'm beginning to wonder if I should be crafting for the person I am crafting for, or for my "partner" in conversation? Please advise. I'm posting this here and not sending a PM to the organizer because I'm hoping the people in question will see it and the problem will resolve itself rather than having to send someone to nudge these people.

You will craft for your partner. :) Please pm your partner and make sure they are ok, stuff happens but people will return to discussion when they are able to. Swap feedback will be based on actual swapping, discussion will not factor into feedback, but may factor into further book swaps.

With sendouts coming up in mind, let's have a check-in here in the thread. Please post to let us know where you are!

I've kept in good contact with both the person I'm sending to and the person who is sending to me (since I'm in the round robin). I am however kind of disappointed in the lack of overall discussion. I understand that I am completely finished with my book and everyone else doesn't "need" to be done until the 23rd for our group, and I understand some people are afraid of posting or reading spoilers, but then...how is this going to work? Why isn't anyone at least talking about where we are supposed to be at in the book? Like if we're supposed to be done with the first 9 chapters, then why isn't anyone talking about it? I dunno, I guess I'm just joining in on the venting here.

I generally do lol I just wish it were more like an actual book club where even just once a week everyone asks and answers questions. Our wonderful group organizer gave us a tentative timeline, I'm not going to say anything about what comes after that so I just don't understand what the problem is unless everyone is WAY behind schedule.

Ok! So I just took a look at the first page here, and realized there's only 5 people in my group. I've seen my 2 partners post, so that means only 2 people haven't been posting regularly. Maybe that's why it feels so quiet. Maybe next time we should have fewer books so that there are bigger groups and therefore more discussion? Also, maybe some of them don't think to check facebook as regularly as i do. Just some things to think about for the next round, which I totally will join regardless lol

lol ok. Yeah, we're working out some kinks this first round. Next time I think we will have much larger groups, and very set timelines. I know I gave my group very loosey-goosey reading goals.

I suggest next time having a best selling group and an "other" group, and have each round be themed based on the "other" choice but still have the best selling group for those who don't like the theme. I.E. Round 2 - Classics Round. That way there's two large groups.

I was just thinking the same thing....next time there should definitely be less groups with more people in them.  I think that would generate more discussions.  And then a timeline for checking in with some discussion topic once a week.

I like this idea a lot.

As for a craft update...I'm getting there!  Just finished out some other swaps and costumes for renfest/halloween.  So, I'm getting going on this one next!  I have my plan, I just need to execute :)

I have started with my crafting.   I'm really just going with things my partner would like to receive because our book did not inspire a heck of a lot of crafting ideas. I am making a "small" inspired by the book though.

I finished my medium item today!  Hooray!  It's been very difficult to find book related items but my items will have some sort of relation to the book even if it may seem tenuous at first glance!  So I have done one med and one small so far, though I might add to the small and have a few other bits in mind, which will be dependant on time and money (or the lack of both!) but I am pretty pleased with how my items are going and have unintentionally come up with a theme.

I def think bigger groups would help, the discussion has pretty much fizzled out in our group and there is only really two of us keeping it going, also I think the book choices need to be considered carefully so that there is enough things to craft as I can see by the posts on here that several people have been finding this part hard going.  It's a brilliant idea though to have a book to read along with people and to craft along and it does get you thinking about it in a way you wouldn't normally.  I would love for this to become an ongoing swap and would def join again!  x

I do agree with the posters who said the groups could be limited to fewer books. Our group is also sort of quiet.

I would be, too! Anytime a mom wants to steal something, you know it's good :)

I have been finished with my book for a long time! Weeks actually, but I'm a fast reader. It's full of sticky notes, where I jotted down crafty ideas as I read. As of yet, I haven't made anything, but I'm doing lots of thinking! There's been quite a bit of chatter on the fantasy thread, and I think everyone is pretty much up to speed. I can't wait to see all of the Alice crafting. I just love Alice:) I'm excited to see what everyone else comes up with, too, since our books are so different!

I started crafting pretty early on this one with some initial ideas, hoping that something in the book would strike me as genius. While I loved The Doomsday book (as did my dog whose eaten two copies..) I know my partner didn't enjoy it. I was trying to think of general book crafts but then I got distracted by Halloween and another swap.

Long story short, I think I'm going to have to ship late. There's something I've decided I really want to make.. but I doubt I can knock it and my Halloween costume out by Friday.

I'm glad MareMare liked the book, because I like it, too, and all of my items are pretty strongly book-related. One could also be used as a Christmas decoration (not for the tree, though). One could be modified pretty easily to remove the book-related bits if MareMare ever decided she wanted to change it. And one small item uses a direct quote from the book.

I'm probably going to be in the late shipping crew, too :( I went home for vacation for five days and was sick most of the time, leaving me no time for fun or crafting :( I came home to a Blue Screen of Death on my laptop, so I'm using the libraries free internet until the new PC comes in!

Anywho, I hope to be able to ship Saturday!

I actually got home today while it was still daylight! I've eaten dinner and I'm going to prep a bunch of stuff for my crafting this weekend. I just realized that I need one minor item, but I can get that on the way home tomorrow, so all is good.

I'll be hiding from Trick-or-Treaters this weekend, so I'll be crafting away (and correcting papers) instead!

I'm a little worried that I may have made one medium and 3 smalls  ??? Each piece has taken a while to make time wise but only one of them has taken up alot of materials.  I find it difficult to judge what is big, medium and small sometimes but I really hope my partner likes everything as I have really enjoyed doing it and everything ties in with the book (although maybe somewhat tenuously!)

I am going to try to send tomorrow, but I have a feeling it may be Saturday.  I'm trying, but Halloween prep, sports practices and early dismissal from school tomorrow are working against me.  :-\

I just spent a bit of time tweaking the design for something for a couple of the items. I need to do one other thing with it at work tomorrow, and then I can craft with it this weekend (and send on Monday).

I always have a hard time figuring out what is a small/medium/large.  Based on the amount of time my items will take, they almost qualify as a large! But, not quite, so I think they'll be okay as mediums. I have an item, made by my sister, that is a generic book item, but the ones that I'll be making go with the book (if you use your imagination, or read the explanation I send along ;) ). I have another item I may try to make, if I have the time and have the skills...

I'm kinda concerned about the same thing - I also may have 1 medium and 3 smalls....I put another something in the package as well...trying to decide if I'm good to go to mail today or if I should come up with something else and ship late... :P

I'm back from my last supply run, I've got my designs worked out (one is still in my head, but it can easily be made real) and I'm in the process of prepping the materials. If all goes according to plan, Ill be done tomorrow night!

We've got a good group here, I've heard from almost everyone regarding the status of their package! Remember to pm me and your partner when you send and receive! A bunch of people, including myself and the co-organizer are sending tomorrow or tuesday, so hopefully I'll be getting a whole bunch of pm's then, and a few days later we'll have a ton of pics in the gallery!

You can check here to make sure I have your status correct:

Everyone's name should be purple or blue, let's keep good communication everyone!

I sent my package and I just hope that it was enough,  I put a note in saying I was happy to send something else if my partner did feel short changed as I don't want anyone to feel that.  Time and effort wise I did spend a long time on the items, sometimes they just look smaller than you originally thought when you started :P

That sometimes happend to me, too, sorbetsurprise! I'm always wracked with swap anxiety. This time I ended up with a bunch of smaller sized items, even though the time/effort/cost of the items all together still equals the swap requirements. As someone who has recieved loooots of swap packages, I can tell you that most people are thrilled with their gifts, since it shows that someone is being thoughtful and generous. I have never recived a package I would complain about, and I don't know many who have!

As someone who typically knits or crochets for swaps, I totally understand how you feel, sorbetsurprise. I've signed up for swaps and spent literally the entire month crocheting and knitting only to end up shipping 5 items and receiving twice as many from my partner. I always feel a little guilty, especially when I see what everyone else sends/gets. Nowadays I feel a little better about it because i know I spend way more time then what's written in the swap requirements for a large on something that ends up measuring about a small or medium, and people who are familiar with crafting understand how much time went into what they get.

Size is a really bad way to measure if you're within the requirements unless it's a swap that locks in the type of craft (like an all sewing swap).. that's why there's the time scale in there, too. Also, if you like to really push your skills on swaps like I know a lot of us do, you probably spend way more time trying something, pulling it out, trying it again, so on and so forth. Like Banga says, most people are thrilled that they get something that's obviously made just for them. I know I am.

I'm glad to hear other people feel in the same position, at the end of the day if i am proud of what I am sending or if my friends have had a good reaction to the things I have made then its usually a good sign!  I hate it when sometimes the smallest things can end up being the fiddliest and take longer! :P
