DETAILS OF SWAP

Description:
Have you ever wondered how much you can fit in an envelope and still pay only 44 cents for it to be mailed to its destination?  Well, credit for this brilliant swap idea goes to lovesclutter!

In this swap, you have one week to fill an envelope with random craft-related and/or crafted goodies from your personal craft stash and mail it to your partner(s).

Some possibilities are: mini crocheted/tatted/woven/knitted things, iron-on embroidery patterns, non-stuffed stuffie, hand drawn artwork, embroidered things, decorative patches, illustrated letters like in medieval bibles, shrinky dink charms, napkins or tissue to decoupage with, iron fusible fabrics, appliqués, decorative tape, stickers, fabric and paper scraps, vintage buttons, cross stitch fabric, magnets, bookmarks, needle books, finger puppets, earrings, cuffs, stitch markers, card cases, cup cozies, ribbons, fiber, little cute erasers, feathers, needle books, interesting pictures, inchies, patterns, whimsies, ephemera, beads, glitter, sequins, jewelry findings, lace, journal pages, photos, stamps, steampunk doodads, puzzle pieces, stencils, stamps, charms, rub-ons, trading cards, postcards, ric rack and trim, paper punched shapes, ATCs, thread, origami, keychains, recipes, Wonder-Under, friendship bracelets, pressed leaves/flowers, matchbook notebooks, flat pendants, small pouches,  ...Get creative!

Per the USPS website, here are the guidelines for the envelopes:

For first class mail, the weight must not be over 1 ounce to qualify for the $0.44 postage fee (caution: if you go over the 1 ounce limit, it will cost you $0.61 for an envelope which weighs up to 2 ounces).

Size limits:
- Rectangular; length is the dimension parallel to the address.
- At least 3-1/2 inches high by 5 inches long by 0.007 inch thick
- No more than 6-1/8 inches high by 11-1/2 inches long by 1/4 inch thick
- Surcharge will apply for nonmachinable letter

Therefore, to qualify for the $0.44 postage fee, the key here would be to keep it more or less flat (so that it will be machinable) and to make sure it weighs no more than an oz
(gotta love those digital scales!).

Since this swap requires little or no crafting time, you have the option of signing up for either 1 or 2 partners!

The Fine Print:
1. Good communication is very important!  It is your responsibility to inform your partner(s) and the organizers when you send/receive your envelopes.
2. Although this is a random swap, the general rule of thumb is to send out things which you would love to receive.
3. No DCNs will be required for this swap (because the envelopes do not qualify for DCNs), but you must agree to resend to your partner(s) if the envelope(s) go missing (for whatever reasons).
4. Everyone who signs up for the swap must post in this thread!

Remember that in order for it to qualify for the 44 cent postage it must be able to bend.

OK i do have a quick question.

Is there a certain size envelope I should sent, I know about the size requirements/limits on the first post, but do I sent everything in a regular letter envelope or should I send it in a longers business envelope?

You could use the smaller size and put just a tiny bit more in there, but I'm going to use the #10, business size. I plan to decorate the envelope too like some stuff I sent to another crafty lady's girls.
I looked at the gallery in the first round, and loved the hand drawn stuff.

I sent in a business envelope last time and had some issues. If it's not stuffed to the limit then loose things will move around and possibly make a hole in the envelope. So everyone please put loose items (beads, buttons, etc.) into a small ziploc bag if possible.

That was me - I used painters tape (the blue low-tack tape from the hardware store). I folded a piece of 8.5" x 11" paper into thirds and taped everything in each section. I like to call that OCD with a little anal retentiveness on the side!

You may want to start stalking every one in here, so you will be prepared when they announce partners. LOL, I'm going to stalk everyone that signs up, just as I watched everyone in round 2.

I have some inchies to get out on a personal swap with a friend, but I will stock pile some, make some themed bookmarks and such. I'm not great with paper crafts, but people need to post some bendable (at a 40 degree) angle that we could make. I'm not too creative, but just impatient for partners. LOL

I am horrible at paper crafts.  I'm hoping to make something using embroidered felt.  Like magnets, bookmarks, needle books, finger puppets, patches, earrings, cuffs, etc.

Anyone else have non-paper ideas?

I'm not big on paper crafts either.  All of your ideas are great!  I was thinking about fabric bookmarks, shrinky dink earrings and/or stitch markers, card cases (a few were sent last round), coffee cup cozies.

I also would love to receive small bits of fabric (at least 2" square).  I am starting to collect different patterns to make a postage stamp quilt and will need all the help I can get!  :o

I'll keep that in mind if we are matched, but I can't cut a straight line on fabric even with rotary cutters. LOL

One nice thing about fabric and ribbons, is they can be light.

I noticed last swap earrings and a metal necklace that got through. These swappers were amazing. I just reread the gallery.

I am mulling over my 'clutter' to see what I could craft that would bend. I lot of it will, and if I hand over to the letter carrier, she will take it no matter what, I gave her two skiens of yarn I got in a swap, she always stops to chat and look at my stuff. Told me she bought her daughters crochet kits and a book, so I had to 'de clutter' on her. I love my mail lady.

Imafundork- will those free fabric swatches work, if so I have a whole bunch you could probably use.

Other things: buttons, fiber, embroidered fabric swatches, I got an awesome felt bookmark in the felt swap that would work, fiber, I saw someone mention a needle book, stickers, little cute erasers, feathers (I would kill for some feathers), tulle ( ;) lovesclutter) I don't know, as long as it's small & allows the envelope to bend 90 degrees I believe it's probably ok.

Seraphina_de_Sangre, I sent in my info again.  I hope you got it this time!
Got it.

I'm in for round two. Not sure what I'm going to craft this time, since I think the crafts I made last time added to much weight and didn't leave much room for stuff!

The last round I didn't craft anything but managed to stuff the envelope full of stuff. I got lucky though because my partner was a paper crafter and could make use of interesting pictures, stickers, and ribbon. And I managed to get it to weigh one ounce.

Lately I've been making wet felted pouches but I am afraid it would be too thick to put in an envelope :(

Lately I've been making wet felted pouches but I am afraid it would be too thick to put in an envelope :(

Is there any way you could partially construct it and leave the rest to your partner?  I was thinking (if it's o.k. with my partner) of possibly making a tiny stuffie minus the stuffing.  It would meet the mailing requirement and partner could add a bit of stuffing and stitch it up.  Does that make sense?

sooo on the longer envelopes..which I do believe I'm going to use ;D it can be 1/4 inch thick and still be 44 cents (under and ounce of course 8))?  that's a lot of stuff you can pack into an envelope!!

That's a great idea! Like the DIY kit that was sent in the last round...at least I think I am thinking of the right gallery.

Yes. Any letter envelope is find. I think I used a #10 envelope which is pretty large.

As long as it is 100% cotton, I'm sure it'd be fine.  :)

Also, my name is on the first page as a swapper, but I don't have feedback started in my profile. Did you miss mine or are you waiting to do them all together?  Just want to make sure I'm official!  ;)

Patterns are a great idea... though I also really like the non-stuffed stuffie idea.  Kindof like a pillowcase without the pillow!  I was thinking of maybe some embroidered things, or maybe some little beaded things.  I don't really do papercrafts either, but I draw a little bit, and I've sent sketches as part of swaps before, so maybe I'll do that.

I'm definitely looking forward to this!  ;D

Title: Re: 44 Cents Swap Round 2
Post by: raeraethejetplane on July 26, 2009 05:45:31 AM
Sketches are a great idea

Some more ideas: decorative patches, illustrated letters like in medieval bibles, shrinky dink charms, napkins or tissue to decoupage with. Any type of iron fusible fabrics used for sewing, applique, and quilting. A length of decorative tape (on wax paper). Did we mention stickers?

I've been putting some things aside and would have put a piece of bark for collage work but It was not flat enough and I was afraid it would break.

I saw that a super-cute shrinky dink broke in transit in the last round.  My partner in the OYP swap just sent me decorated but un-shrunk shrinky dinks with directions for shrinking.  The un-shrunk ones would be more bendable.

After nigh on to 6 months without swapping, I'm back in the pool and just sent in my questionnaire.

I'm also hoping to get postage stamp squares for the quilt that I'll make someday, as well as 4" squares of fabric for my yo-yo quilt that's in progress.

I'm also a bookbinder so I have lots of fun fabric and paper scraps that I'm hoping to inflict on someone.  And I just acquired a massive stash of vintage buttons so I'll have to see how I can squeeze a few of those in.

I'm already mentally accumulating some of my choicest goodies to share.  Hooray!!!  I can't wait!

And remember, if you are sure it is under an ounce it is a lot better just to stamp it and give to your carrier. The clerks are very fussy. I'm sending a large bendable envelope, and they want those to be stiff. go figure. I put a file folder in there. I'm going to insure it though. I can't print that postage online.

Those buttons sound fabulous! Welcome back to swapping!

Also, my name is on the first page as a swapper, but I don't have feedback started in my profile. Did you miss mine or are you waiting to do them all together?  Just want to make sure I'm official!  ;)
I had the same question!

I put things like denim scraps, fusible interfacing, and cross stitch fabric on my wishlist in the questionnaire.

Ah, but whoever ends up stuck with me, please avoid shrinky dinks.

Someone mentioned stalking everyone who has signed up, but I don't have time for that... So, when I get my partners, I'll do a quick stalk (some folks are hard to stalk, myself included), and then get in touch with them. I'm making a list of items I can include, and will pick from that list when the time comes.

There have been a lot of great ideas knocked about it this thread- beyond paper bits and stickers- and it's been inspiring!

That's odd. I could have sworn I updated your profiles. It's okay though, before I close the swap I am going back and checking everyone's profiles to make sure everything is correct. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I don't get any emails on the threads I want to be notified either! At first I was getting them every once and while. Now I don't get them at all. I thought it was just me.

There's a glitch in the matrix.

At first, I thought maybe they were getting sent to my spam box.  (If you aren't getting ANY, maybe that's the case for you.)  But, what's weird is that isn't the case.  Some come in, just not others.  I'd say I get about 3/4 of the threads but not the other 1/4, and I've noticed that the problem is worse in spurts --- like 2 days at a time here and there.

I can't wait to get my partners.  I have a big pile of ideas, and I'm just waiting to find out the preferences of the 2 people I'm stuffing envelopes for! :D

I know, I know. I think the mad rush of swappers is over, but we've still got a lot of people trickling in.

I glad this is a cheap swap too, there's so much you can send and receive for 44 cents. Things that you may not need a lot of like little embellishments or even just surprises. There's always a ton of stuff I collect that just sits around my house because I really don't know what to do with it. At least now I can give it away, hopefully it'll be of use to someone!

Do the best you can. It's okay to go a little bit over but an obvious disregard for the rules (like putting rocks in it or something) will result in not so great feedback.

Hahaha at least from a Craftster they would be pretty rocks.
If anyone is wondering how they're going to weigh their envelope, it's pretty easy to rig up a scale. 5 quarters equals one ounce. Or you could take your unsealed envelope to the scary people at the post office to double check. I had more fun my way, with Mr. Malmow asking what the heck I was doing stringing envelopes and quarters from the doorway.

Add 5 nickels and a penny too.

I still need to find more one ounce equivalents. I got a postal scale that goes to the 1/10th.

One #10 envelope and 6 pieces of laser copy paper.

Anyone have any to add.

A simpler scale is to take a ruler, balance it on a spray can and put the quarters at one end and the envelope on the other end of the ruler. If the quarters slide off your envelope is too heavy! :)

BTW, for those of you who mentioned being JM fans after seeing the stamp on the opening page, do y'all remember this most excellent Siouxsie and the Banshees song from the early 1990's?  Siouxsie Sioux said this song's lyrics are about JM and the period immediately preceding her death.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBm-m67d3Bg

Ever since this thread went up, I catch myself singing that song quietly whenever I see that stamp.  So, I figured I'd infect y'all's brains, too!  LOL

I'm in and I can't wait for it to start.  Already hatching up ideas. :)

I went to usps.com looking for Jayne Mansfield stamps this morning, ROFL!  I didn't find any.  I wonder why, lol.  It was worth a try.  I showed my DH the stamp this morning.  He has a crush on Mariska Hargitay.  I always thought she looked like her Father but the older she gets I think she looks like her Mother. It was a terrible tragedy.  My birth Mother died the same way. I really loved the stamp on the front page. :)

I have rocks galore in my home.  DH collects them. I have teeny tiny rocks to huge rocks.  I wonder how we could send rocks in a swap.  That would be cool.

Okay swappers! I have a proposition for you guys. I have a potential participant here that lives in Canada. In the spirit of the swap raeraethejetplane and I have decided that she cannot truly "join" BUT we are looking for a partner for her so that she can participate. It would be a personal swap between the partners, with the guidelines of the swap. You will still post in the boards and in the swap gallery. The cost of shipping would be about a $1 or so. If you would be interested in getting some cool stuff from Canada and would like her as a partner please post it in the thread first. I will PM whoever asks first with the rest of the deets.

It's not that I don't like rocks, just that I went to the beach yesterday and picked up a bunch of them!! I think instead of sending rocks in this swap there should be a just rock swap. Where you can swap pretty rocks, decorated rocks, things made with rocks (jewelry, etc).  Iwould join that swap. Plus some rocks can be pretty heavy, and I would rather not get just a rock in an envelope.  :D

A rock swap is a great idea, especially for the small flatrate box that needs to weigh under 70? pounds. If we aren't a creative bunch, I don't know who is.

50? AWESOME, so if I organze a round 3 I am going to need a co-organizer. Too sweet. All of this response.

Yes, and a challenge to see who could paint up the smallest rock with detail. LOL I can't paint or draw worth **** but would try. LOL I think someone needs to start the thread in craft swap ideas and see what the response is. There are plenty of 44 centers who would probably be in.

Just my 44 cents worth.

Are we allowed to do our explanatory notes via PM so that we don't have to weight down our package with unnecessary paper that could be replaced with fun stuff?

(And I drank a ghastly bottle of wine tonight, but it had a gorgeous label.  Guess what one of my partners is getting!)

Title: Re: 44 Cents Swap Round 2
Post by: Seraphina_de_Sangre on July 30, 2009 08:29:50 PM
Yes, please PM any instructions or explanations to your partner. You don't want to weigh down the envelop unnecessarily.

Anyone thinking rock candy?

I am assuming that everything in the package must be legal substances!  ;)

He he.  I hadn't thought about that kind of rock.   :D  Mine is completely legal.  I promise!

Lol. Yes, please keep all rocks of the non illegal variety. I used to collect rocks, that's why I don't want any. I'm going down to the Smithsonian museum tomorrow, they have a rock/gem store where you  can buy tons of cool stuff. I think they still sell small sparkly geodes there for $1. I may pick up a few!

I haven't had pop rocks for a super long time, but I remember always buying one lollipop for every pack of pop rocks. That way, you can lick the lollipop, dip it in the pop rocks, and repeat! I'm sure the double dose of sugar made my mom really happy. :-P

Mmmm Pop Rocks.  I am now craving the Lik M sticks (is that what they are called?) after reading about using the sucker with Pop Rocks.  You know sugar sticks you lick then dip them in the sugary powdery goodness...

I started gathering things that will possibly be put into my envelopes.  I am going to try my hand at making envelopes for this.  Since they are going to be a bit heavier I am going to weigh everything using a regular envelope.  I don't want to have to not put something in cause my envelope is a bit heavier.  Will this be okay?

I would weigh everything with the made envelope. They include the envelope weight along with the weight of the contents.

I'm not sure if I approve of all this sugar that you ladies plan on consuming...BUT you can get packs of pop rocks and fun dip at Five Below, if you have one near you!  ;)

I'm getting antsy to start... which is bad, because I have a TON of work to do today and tomorrow and even Monday... In fact, I should get my butt in gear and get started on it all!

I should have been more clear.. Since we are co-organizing Seraphina and I each have our own group of swappers that we are responsible for. I posted my list. Hers should be up soon...There is one person whom we are still trying to match up from her list.
I have a busy busy weekend ahead of me...and it's gonna be hectic if I don't get to sleep right now! *shuts lap top closed*

Ooops! I didn't mean that to be directed at you raerae! I figured that was the deal, and I guess I wasn't clear enough in my post.

And... why am I still on Craftster? I have work to do!!

I'm going out of town on Monday afternoon, so I've been buzzing around the house today putting my envelopes together.

Right now, each one is up to .88 oz and I think I've got stuff in there that I would be excited to get.

This is such fun-- almost like a cheap paper jar of whimsies!

Ok, everyone.

If you're in my group your partners are posted on the front page and you should have received your info.

If you requested 2 partners then you got two separate PM's.

If you have any issues, traumas, dramas, or else, PM me with "Swap Issues" as your topic.

Thanks.

I also want to give a big thank you to raeraethejetplane  :-*. There's no way I would have been able to do this without her. I have a lot more respect for everyone who organizes swaps now.

Organizing is actually a lot harder and time consuming than most people think.  I've done a few now and still am not perfect at it.  Thanks for doing this one, I can't imagine doing one with 50 participants.  lol

I've stalked a little and have a few ideas of what to send, just need to start digging through my stash and find the perfect stuff.

My scales are not that accurate, so I stopped at .8 oz. I hope Sera and Sarah like what they get. I did a little (very little) crafty stuff and stash. Sarah, I have sent you something I think you will quickly become addicted too. I have to go to the post office to send yours, but they will both go out tomorrow.

We really had to get partners out quickly, this swap goes by so fast that if anybody wants to make something they need to know who their partner is asap. It was time consuming but the real kicker is making sure everyone's allergenic issues match up  ::) mine included. I can't tell you how many people I hoped to match and then said, 'oh no, why'd you have to have a cat AND a dog!' lol. I'm glad everyone likes their partners though.

I noticed that, you got paired with two partners with the same name, thankfully different spelling. I have your envelope pretty much packed. I'm debating on whether or not I'm going to craft something other then the little things I made. We'll see.

I think those are considered large envelopes and will not qualify I see they do. Is that about the size the publisher clearing house entries come in? Your objects will have to be very lightweight.

PM me with your problem and let me see if I can help you figure this out.

Random question but if I get to the post office and one is a bit outside of the limit (my scale is far less than perfect) is it ok to just go ahead and send as is? I already taped the envelope up and would hate to take anything out over .0000001 inches. I measured and weighed it at my house and I am pretty sure it will be ok but just in case...

Does anybody know what happens to the envelopes if you just put a stamp on 'em and put them in your mailbox for pick-up and they're too heavy (or thick)? Does the mailman just leave them in there or do they get picked up and returned to you a day or two later?

I've had 2 things happen: in one case, it was re-routed back to me after I mailed it, but it took like a week! In the other case I received something that didn't have enough postage and they brought it to my door saying I'd need to pay the balance right there before they'd hand it over (thankfully it was less than a dollar I had to pay).  :)

This happened to me and I just put the postage and bill out for the carrier the next day.

I have two hanging on my door waiting to be picked up. I put the sufficient postage to Sarah and the contents listed, and it is under the limit, so I hope it doesn't come back. Mail is running a little late. I hope it is my regular carrier because she will most likely take it, even if it's foreign.

I am going to be filling my envelope today, I want to just stick it in my mailbox because the receptionist at the post office is always such grump :( But I'll have to see if it's under the weight limit.

Oh, and before I forget again, thanks for organizing! With over 50 people this must have been nuts! Too bad we can't send some envelopes your way :)

So I went to send at the post office today and the man behind the counter advised me that I could not send anything in standard envelopes that wasnt flat. I went on to explain to him that they were less than 1/4" thick and weighed 1 ounce or less and could bend. He wouldnt let me send them. So I just came home and plopped a stamp on them and they are awaiting to be taken by the nice mail carrier. Has anyone else had issues with the post office telling them different than the usps website? One of my envelopes is exactly 1 ounce and the other .90 ounces and both fit the criteria but he out right told me there was no way it would ship for $.44. Instead he advised that I needed to use a large envelope (6"x9") and pay the $1.22 postage.

I've had people tell me all kinds of stuff too... it totally depends on the person you get.  Kinda like airline rules/TSA  ::)  I'd just toss them in the normal mail bin and not worry about it.  I swear, once it's in the system, they let the little things slide :)

I've had several things happen....sometimes they've just gone through and the person who rec'd it got it with "postage due" on it, sometimes nothing happened and most of the time, it comes back the next day with a note on it telling me what's wrong.  A few months ago I was trying to send a thin paperback in a large envelope.  With books, you can either choose Media Mail or First Class, whichever is cheaper.  That darn book came back FOUR times, first they wanted me to put more postage on it, then it came back again for more postage (which I refused because I had already put too much postage on it the first time), then it came back because I didn't scribble out the note they had stamped on it telling me to put more postage on it, and the final time it came back because the stamps were canceled....BY THEM!  I kept putting it in the mail and finally the person rec'd it.  It was so retarded, the postage they said I owed was something like .03.  The last bird swap I did every one of my birds came back for more postage and this was the one time I actually took the packages to the post office to weigh and have the postage put on!  Luckily, they were all only delayed a couple of days.

I have sent to one partner (snazzlecraft).  Still trying to gather for the other.  My tastes don't overlap with her's as much as the other.

I mailed snazzlecraft's envelope from the post office.  She weighed it, and she slid it through the thickness checking slot.  So, it is SUPPOSED to be just fine.  We'll see what crap the post office tries to pull anyway.

ALSO, FYI, the mail clerk said she strongly advises against including buttons in the envelope because even something the thickness and size of a dime can cause the envelope to jam up in the machine, and the envelope and it's contents'll get pretty much destroyed.

uh oh haha. Hopefully mine will be ok. My bf used to work in a mailroom and said that they generally pull the ones out that look bulky and do those by hand because its so much more of a hassle to jam a machine or send it back to the original sender. I am hoping that is what they will do if mine isnt ok. Mine was less than 1/4 inch though so if they put that on their website then you would think anything under that would be fine. Hence the phrase "you'd think"

I was just thinking about how much paper people fold and cram into those envelopes. Like our landlord sent our 8 page lease folded up in the same size envelope I used and it got here fine. I dont know I think it will fine. If my partners dont receive in the next week then I suppose I will put another envelope in the mail for each...but I hope the originals make it since I actually really like their contents!

It wasn't thickness of a dime --- it was something HARD that was at least the thickness of the dime.  It was the unbendiness of it.

My carrier was out sick today and 2 others in my zip, called the post office and asked, as I had outgoing mail. My original letter to seraphina was under 1/4 inch when squisshed, The stupid clerk just wanted to 'show some power'. The alternate carrier took both letters, and I let her know I had called the PO to find if it was OK to send directly from home to canada, I wrote on the envelope the contents and had sufficient postage.

Sera, I found another thing that I think fell out of your envelope. :( I will definitely make it up to you.

I pulled my envelope apart and reinforced it with tape on the inside, I made tape samples on pieces of a cut up envelope to see what weighed less, the skulls won out! It did add some wight to my envelope tho, it went from a plain envelope weighing 0.1oz to the taped version weighing 0.2oz so not so bad.

I used packaging tape around the edges and bottom specifically. just in case it gets caught it wont tear through. Hopefully that helps!

I sent both of mine today!!! Getting it to weigh only one ounce was really difficult!  I stood at the scale and kept taking things out and putting other things in... and I had to take the magnets off one thing to allow the weight.... I hope my partner has magnets at her house!

I have enough ideas that if the envelope does not make it I can easily do another one... but I will be really disappointed!

Mine are stuffed and ready to go! I had to use the quarter idea to weigh so I'll certainly be annoying the PO people tomorrow...  ;D I'm so excited!....Just nervous.  :-\

If you think you weigh at or under just stamp and send. LOL, I have an issue with clerks.

I weighed 5 quarters on my scale. One oz

I think 5 nickels and a penny are the same. Dont be nervous, the idea I had originally was cheap and low stress. Boy have we learned alot in the US about our postal regulations.

Mine are stuffed, addressed and sealed! I weighed them on my digital kitchen scale, and they both say 1.0 oz... but one feels a teeny bit heavier. I'll bring them to the PO tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed! If I can find my stamps tonight, I'll just stamp them and send them. If not, I'll have to buy some tomorrow. I didn't even stick on a return address label (I hand wrote it), because I didn't want to add any extra weight.

I did put in something that was a little thick, but still less than 1/4". I tried to postition it so it wouldn't be where the bar code would go and where the cancellation would go. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but it can't hurt ;)

My envelope is sealed and stamped and in my purse...ready to dropped in the mailbox tomorrow.  I'm going to cross my fingers and hope like heck it gets to my partner and not get sent back cuz it's too heavy. ;)  My kitchen scale brought it at 1.1 oz.

We pm'd a couple of times and I'm sending her some vintage fabrics and wanted to send big enough pieces that she could actually do something with them. Neither are very big but she might be able to add some other fabrics to it and come up with something really nifty!

Hope you like the fabrics, Autumn!

I've had pen pals my entire life, multiples at a time, and I have always sent/received oddly shaped things in regular envelopes. It was rare that anything didn't make it through. I think I have received mangled mail twice. Much more often I have trouble with postage amounts. Sometimes it seems like the rules change daily. I guess like a lot of people have suggested, it depends on the carrier/teller.

I finished one envelope and hope to mail it tomorrow. If all goes as planned I'll finish the other tomorrow and mail on Wednesday. What a fun, stress free swap!!

Yup, I've learned more about usps these past few days than I have ever before. I guess I'm too worried about it getting lost or tossed....I'm ready for relief in knowing that they've arrived at their destinations (kinda gotta send em first tho)!

Except for one set of small items I am making everything for my partner. I am going to be the "Oh no she is actually sending at the last minute!" LOL. Don't worry I will have it out on time. Never been late on one of my swaps.

My things are so cute I keep hugging them, ROFL.  I am my worst critic. I know I will be standing at the PO scales putting things in and taking them out. I swear if the PO bend my envelope I am going to hunt them down!

Is anybody doing the whimsy swap? I love small item's. It's an obsession.

I picked out some things for my envelopes, but haven't weighed them in the envelope yet. I'll do that tomorrow I think. They should be out in the mail by Thursday.

I've sent lumpy envelopes before for ATC swaps and I've never had any problem with it getting there... I do try to do what someone mentioned earlier, put the more lumpy part to the bottom and if it's an ATC I face it so that the lumpy part is at the back of the envelope. I try to keep something smooth and flat at the front. Also, I've never taken that type of stuff to the post office. I do have a small postal scale so I just throw them in my mail box.

That would be very odd... I assume it's not padded?  Even a handmade envelope would have a hard time being over 1oz.  Definitely bring it in to be weighed though!  And maybe recalibrate your scale with some quarters :)

Been out of the loop due to being away for a few days, but am back now and ready to send on Thurs.!! Have come up with so many things I have had to downsize in the envelope (: haha.. some really cool stuff that I didn't even think of before going through my stuff!!

Also, don't be alarmed if it takes a couple weeks to reach the U.S. ... mailing from Canada can be annoying from time to time.. mailing cards back home can take between 3/4-14 days at the most.. there's no rhyme or reason, sometimes it's faster than others and sometimes it's as slow as a snail. Anyway, looking forward to receiving and sending! (:

SunflowerSmiles, that sucks!  It wasn't a non-rectangular shape (square) was it?  They don't like that.  Or if the address is written along the short side.  Otherwise, I have no idea and boo  >:(  But I'm glad it got returned to you quickly... I've had things with too little postage on them come back to me like, a month later.  Wth!

I also sent supplies to my partners, mostly because I just moved all my stuff to my new apartment over the weekend, but I'm still in the old town, so I only kept minimal craft stuff with me.  But they're good supplies! :)  And since I only have stuff to work on one thing here, I'm totally going to finish off some long awaited WIPs!

Sometimes if the envelope is significantly thicker in some parts than others, they'll charge you a non-machineable fee (I had to do it a year or two ago and it was like 60 cents extra). I wonder if that's what the issue was?

I got one envelope back today! I know it was under 1 ounce, so it must have been just a little too thick. Not sure what's going on at the post office because I know I've mailed things that were heavier and still got through. Oh well, since I don't have any means to get to the post office again before send out day I just stuck two more stamps on the envelope and back in the mailbox it goes. I did try to make it fit the swap requirement, but it didn't work for me this time :(

I've spent most of today working on mine, but I think I've spent more time decorating the envelope than finding things to go in.  My partners are getting a mix of things.

I live only 3 blocks from my PO, but the lady there is a witch.  So I'm going to bug her over and over about the weight till I get it right, then mail them from another PO :P

I just got back from a late night postal run!  I love the automated postage machine!   :D
Pinky Yarn's envelope weighed in at exactly one ounce but I'm concerned it's bit on the fat side.  Casey1201's orginally weighed 1.2 ounces so I took a few things out and now it's perfect. Each have one thing crafted, mostly supplies and one other extra.

I'd love to see an automated postal machine.  This PO here got electronic scales just TWO YEARS ago! It used to be the kind where you had to slide the thing across the bar...

*edit* Wow that took my post awhile to go through as this was about something on the last page...  Stupid dialup..

I have mine done. I made all craft item's except for a few small things. Oh, I hope they all fit. I will be spitting mad if they don't, lol. I just need to make the envelope. I am going to work on that later this evening.

I am taking a small break. My beautiful kitty was spaded today. She is back home. She is always playful so you would think she would be stoned out of her head. Nope. She is hopping on everything, following me around and into everything. Instead of stoned she is on a hyper mode. I am worn out but luckily no stitches have been yanked out yet.

My other cat has been sick all day. I have been cleaning up hairballs. I feel like I am in a home full of toddler's, lol.

Aww, poor cats! And poor you, to have to clean up all those hairballs  :D

I have my envelope done, sealed, and ready to send off to dramatrauma! I'm sending a few crafted things, a few supplies, and a couple of little extra doodads. Its only 1 oz...Here's hoping no one notices that its a wee bit pudgy.

I am done with my envie and I am sending today. Mine is a wee bit pudgy too. What are the new rules. I am so confused with all the new PO rules. They change every five minutes, lol.

I hate to take anything out because I hand crafted most of it.

My cats are finally asleep. I am about ready to take a nap, lol. I am worn out. The last thing my poor cat did that was spaded was tear up our toliet paper roll. I swear they gave her hyper pills at the vet. She would not calm down.

My Mom had her cat neutered from the same vet on Monday. Her poor cat was so stoned she had to call the vet back and cuss them out for giving him too much anesthesia.

I wanted to have my envelopes sent out yesterday, but it is getting hard to craft at my house... My mom has this idea that if you are sitting, you aren't doing anything important, so she will find some work for you to do, lol.  ::)

But I will get my envelopes done tonight somehow, so I can send tomorrow.

So I go to get mine weighed today.. And I just have to gripe to someone. I hand the lady 2 envies and ask her to weigh them. And careful, because they are still open.  She tells me the first one is 44.  I was like huh? Then she grabs the second one and starts griping about it's thickness.  And I ask how much does it weigh? She then says it will cost over $1 to send, I was like, how much does it weigh? Then I just said forget it and tried to walk out and THEN she tells me how much it weighs.  I was like ok good, it's thick cause everything slid to the side.  I had to then ask her again how much the first one weighed.  She then had to reweigh it to tell me.  GRRR.  Is it really that hard to answer one question?

Ok, on a better note, I've received one envie, but in the middle of pics, my camera battery died. It's charging and things will be up shortly.

Hehe aww, zigg13pra, that sucks.  Postal employees vary in personality and strictness more than any other place, it seems!  Hope the envelope you received cheered you up, at least :)

There's one lady at the post office by my work that absolutely insists that DCs can only go on priority mail, so I always end up paying a lot more when she's there.  There's a check box for first class right on the DC form!  Arg  >:(

Ok guys, I just wanted everyone to know, I am going on vacation tomorrow. This wouldn't have been a big problem as it was only supposed to be for the weekend, but now I'm learning that it is for a week. I will have limited internet access, my grandparents still have dial-up (so do I) but their computer is like an original dell, no lie. It's old as dirt.

So, keep sending me your status updates & keep posting in the gallery. There shouldn't be any crazy emergencies within the next week (I hope) that will need my immediate attention.

anywho - my envie is nearly ready to go.............................I will be mailing on Saturday - will pm when it does go. :)

my week has been full - hubby tore up his shoulder and we have been to the ER (monday all night) the doctors (tues) setting up the MRI (wed) and hopefully they will get him fixed up soon - they did have a cast on him for a broken arm (ER had it wrong) - which he doesn't so the cast came off Tues - much better - I don't have to drive him everywhere now - now to get that shoulder fixed but they can't do the MRI till next week.

You can look at that situation super positively and tell her family that at least she has a little bit of herself scattered all over the U.S. But it is pretty gross to think about ashes falling out and I am sure USPS workers have touched it. Hopefully it gets to you in decent condition and whoever packaged them needs some help next time.

And I am also getting anxious because I sent my envelopes quite a bit of days ago but they havent been returned to me and my partners havent received. Grrrr Colorado USPS.

I am done with my envie and I am sending today. Mine is a wee bit pudgy too. What are the new rules. I am so confused with all the new PO rules. They change every five minutes, lol.

This is so true....and it seems to vary between post offices and even postal workers, it's really unfair.  I used regular birthday card sized envelopes, which are within the requirements for first class mail and normally use .44 stamps (well, I took apart a birthday card envelope and traced it on to different paper, but you know what I mean).  I weighed everything at home, read the directions on the USPS website, put extra postage on them because the postal worker told me one of them was slightly more than a .44 and definitely non-machinable and still one of them arrived postage due.  This happens on a fairly regular basis, it's really annoying.  The thing is, I've NEVER had them send me any refund money in the mail when I've put too much postage on something and mailed it!

Title: Re: 44 Cents Swap Round 2
Post by: peihan17 on August 07, 2009 07:51:50 AM
Babalina, I'm so sorry to hear about the ashes!  But, the times when I've received envelopes/packages that were torn, they were usually put in a big clear plastic bag so no more stuff would be lost.  Hopefully they do the same for her ashes  :-\  I'm sure the postal workers were more concerned about drugs or anthrax or something... at least ashes haven't ever hurt anyone.

My partner clear across the country received, but I'm not sure if my other one made it just down the east coast.  Hopefully she'll get it soon!  It was the heavier one that made it already too!

And OhThat, that's the way it is with the government, like taxes.  If you accidentally overpay, it takes forever to get it back.  But man, if you owe them, they're all up your butt ASAP!

I'm headed back to our new apt tonight (where all swap things are going), so I'll know if I've received then.  I hope there's something waiting for me! :)

DUH!
Forgot the whole reason I visited the thread today. . . I sent! Both of my envelopes went out today.

I'm not too worried about the weight and thickness because I mailed from work and we have a postage machine. I don't know if it is an official rule or not but it seems to me that if it slides throught the tiny slot to get postage stamped with no issues then it must be thin enough AND machineable.

I sent out my envelope today with two 37 cent stamps on it, as I got those stamps for free and didn't see the point in buying 10 cent stamps to make the postage right when I had these free stamps (also I like never mail things... so what's the point) LOL

I sent yesterday. I failed at the 44cents tho. I stood at the digital scale at the post office for a good 10 minutes trying to get both of my envelopes at exactly 1 oz. Nothing I sent was particularly bulky so I didn't worry too much about the 1/4 inch. BUT the auto teller  machine wouldn't let me pay with a CC so I took the envelopes inside to the teller. She took out her 1/4 inch measurement thingy and my envelopes totally went through just fine but she still added 20 cents! She had already printed out the stamps before I could stop her. Argh!
Anyway...I guess it's better that I pay the extra now and have them sent out then have them arrive post due or not at all.
guess i'll have to try again next round!

I am pretty sure mine are in the system by now. I didn't go to the clerk since the post office was closed by the time I got there on Saturday, but I think they follow all of the $.44 rules. Although, I am not so sure about the accuracy of my weight estimate, since I have been using my mom's really vintage letter scale, lol:

So, I stopped at about .8 of an ounce for both of them, just to be sure.

Is that what she told you that was? ;)

I'm getting nervous about my envelopes reaching their destinations. I mailed them out with my inchies for the inchie swap, and a few people have already received their inchies. I guess I'll find out soon enough if they're being sent back to me. :-\

I'm in the same boat, Aikibookworm.  My partner sent Friday and it's not here yet.

It also took both of my envelopes nearly a week to arrive.  I about had a meltdown waiting.

Bad post office!!!

One envelope for me got returned to my sending partner. She rearranged the envelope and sent it again, but it still hasn't arrived. I'm hoping today is the day!

I'm hoping WYOKrista gets her envelope today :-\  If not I'll send another on Thursday.

That's one way to send more than the allowed limit -- "Haven't received yet? Okay, I'll send you another!" Next day, "Haven't received yet? Okay, I'll send you another!"  :D

Ok guys, thanks for being so patient with me. I should be getting to everyone's feedback later on today(I'll be in Raleigh) or sometime tomorrow(Back at my house). I'm sure my envelope that I sent to lovesclutter will be in my mailbox, as I don't think she has received.  :( I'm not going to put any late feedback in for anyone who had to resend, because a lot of people had to do so, even those of us who were within the PO's limits.

My grandmother is feeling so bad. She needs surgery and they can't do it until next month.  :'( She's in a lot of pain and has so much trouble walking. So while I feel bad for leaving everyone hanging, I'm glad I got to see her. It's been a year since I've gotten to visit.

Sending hugs to you and your grandma. It's more important you spend time with her and love her to pieces. I hope she gets better soon.

I'm sorry to hear your grandmother isn't feeling well, it's wonderful that you were able to go see her.  I hope they're able to boost her up a bit on the waiting time for the surgery and is feeling much better soon.

Thoughts and prayers sera.  I was lucky to spend time with my grandmother before she passed, and if your grandma can have her surgery, you may have more time hopefully. Please pm me with her name so I can add her to my and mom's prayer lists.

Don't worry about me.

Hey guys! Some swappers have let me know that the swap shows up in their profile twice. I am trying to fix it and sent a note to the help desk for help. I did my best to input names correctly but I still did something wrong :( Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

I was wondering about that, I have one with feedback and one without so it's still showing that I have 5 swaps in progress.  Thanks for working on getting it fixed!

Ok guys, this swap is officially over, everyone should have their feedback now. There were no flakers *cheers* and thought we may have lost some mail along the way  :'( everyone got great packages.

What we've learned: "If in doubt, leave it out!" Many of us, myself included, felt the need to squish that last bit of something wonderful into our envelopes making them either more than 1oz or non-machinable. In the next swap, hopefully we'll be able to resist the urge and more enves will get sent to our partners and not returned to us!  ;)

Thanks for making this swap great everyone.
Thanks lovesclutter for the wonderful idea.
Thanks raeraethejetplane for being the best co-org. ever  :-*

How long should we wait to arrange a round 3? I would be willing, but would need some experienced co-organizers, if we have more than 50 we could have an extra co-organizer.

I have a post in new swap theme ideas, and no one has responded. When we get some interest, I will be more than happy to do so. I may need to ask you for help from time to time. I've never organized before. ;)

Modified to add link, more people will see it here.

This swap was great (easy and inexpensive) and thanks to our fabulous organizers for tackling such a task! I'm heading off to bookmark the discussion thread for the next round. I just started a new job, so I'm not sure I'll be able to do any more swaps beyond the ones I'm in, but once things settle down, I might be able to do it.
