Title: Updated: Tom Servo and new Chibi Tom Servo w/ PATTERN!!
Post by: MageAkyla on April 28, 2009 04:53:04 PM
Since there was so much love for my Servo and a request for a pattern, I decided to tackle a smaller, easier version and this time I wrote up a pattern as I went.  So here he is: Chibi Tom Servo. (Pattern follows)  Make as many as you want, but this pattern is not for commercial use.

With size comparison (the original was as tall as the bottle or so):

Starting with the Neck:
Magic Ring,
Row 1: sc 6 times in ring (6 sc)
Row 2:  2 sc in each sc around (12)
Row 3: sc in the back loops only (BLO) around (12)
Row 4-8: sc in each sc around
Body
Row 9:  sc in the front loops only (FLO) around (12)
Row 10:  (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around (18)
Row 11: (sc in the next 2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc) around (24)
Row 12: sc in the BLO around (24)
Row 13-20:  sc in each sc around
Attach white
Row 14:  working in the FLO (sc in the next 3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc) around (30)
Row 15: (sc in the next 4 sc, 2 sc in the next sc) around (36)
Row 16: (sc in the next 5 sc, 2 sc in the next sc) around (42)
Row 17: (sc in the next 6 sc, 2 sc in the next sc) around (48)
Row 18: (sc in the next 7 sc, 2 sc in the next sc) around (54)
Thread a pipe cleaner through the body where you want the arms Stuff neck and body here
Attach black
Row 19: sc in the BLO of each sc around (54)
Row 20:  (sc in the next sc, decrease the next 2 sc) around (36)
Row 21: sc in each sc around
Row 22 to finish:  repeat rows 20 & 21
Stuff before the hole gets too small.
Finishing: When the center is small enough, weave the yarn into the stitches and pull tight, tie off.

Top cap:
Magic Ring,
Row 1: sc 6 times in ring (6 sc)
Row 2:  2 sc in each sc around (12)
Row 3: (sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc) around (18)
Row 3: sc in the BLO of each sc around (18)
Row 4: sc in each sc around (18)
Fasten off

Cut out and glue on felt where needed.
Wind the Pipe Cleaner into a spring form. Leaving tips to glue the hands to.
Attach head (I used a decoupage ball from Michaels)

This is essentially the same pattern I used for the big Servo, Just add the number of rows and increases to reach the size you want.  You can attach pipe cleaners but you'll need one for each side or a much longer one or attach them to the crocheted shoulders..

preg_replace('/(.{49})/', '$1 ', '______________________________________________________________________________')

Well I've been working on this one here and there for a while and now it's finally done. Here's Tom Servo who I made for my brother's late xmas/early bday present. (We don't often get each other anything so this is actually a good present for both, heh). He's a huge MST3K fan so I know he'll love it.

and from the side:

I had some problem figuring out his arms or hands since nothing I crocheted turned out looking right.  I ended up finding some cheap electrical tubing, sculpted the hands from clay and hooked it all together with a pipe cleaner.  The head is the clear decoupage globes you can find at Michaels.  He was a lot more of a challenge than I expected when I started this endeavor.  I putting assembling it off as long as possible but the parents are going to visit him tomorrow so I had to finish it finally.

"Nobody gets me - I'm the wind, baby!"
- Favorite Servo quote EVER!

Dear goodness, could you write up a pattern for this? I think my husband would flip out with joy if I made this for him!

So amazing! Congratulations. I've thought of making a Tom Servo a couple of times and always put it off because it would be such a big project. Yours turned out wonderfully. I love his little sculpy hands.

I second the request for a pattern.  ;)

I know you have, where do you think I got the idea to try and make it.  I'm a fan of blog and your little Cthulhu's. And yes, it was a big project but I owed the brother some back presents, heh.

To answer the questions:
Yes, I'm thinking about Crow but I need to think about how to do it some more.  I think pipe cleaners and dowels will be involved.

Yes, his arms do wiggle. It's what took me so long cause I wanted them to look just right.

As for the pattern...I really make things up as I go along and Servo is currently 4 states away with my parents on the way to my brother. So this is what I can remember.
I made it in five crocheted parts:  the top piece, the two shoulders, the neck, and the rest.

The top is a flat circle up to I think 30 sc around and then I crocheted in the back loops only and went around twice more.

The neck starts out the same but i go around quite a few more times and then it's stuffed and closed off at the bottom.

The body starts again the same just goes out to i think 42 sc and around again more times.  When it's big enough I swapped colors and crocheted in the front loops only one round and then increased normally outwards to 114 or so. I swapped colors to black and crocheted back loops 114 2 times and then front loops once and started decreasing but kept it flatter than a normal round amigurumi ball by decreasing every other stitch around once, then sc around once, and repeat until you reach the middle and then wind the yarn through the stitches and pull tight and knot to finish off.

The shoulder is done by crocheting a block of 4 rows of 8.  then start crocheting around the edges a few rows to make a box like form on three sides, then finish by connecting the pieces at the top.
I glued the pieces to the globe using e6000 glue. We attempted to trim the nubbs of the globe off with rotary tool with a cutting disk.  The hands are sculpted using sculpty polymer clay.  I used the pipe cleaners and the tubbing to form a spot for them to be glued to later on.  After firing I glued the pipe cleaner to the hands, threaded it through the tubes and weaved it into the shoulder, than sewed the shoulders onto servo.  The rest is felt just glued on.

I hope that makes some sense. I really do most of my crochet on the fly.
