hey, guys, after reading through responses, and trying to form my own... I changed one of the questions: the crafts you do question.   So, if you want to resubmit your answer, just to the new version of question, please do so.  If not, that's cool too.

:-[  Sorry, first time organizing.    ::)

I need questionnaires from hippiejo74 and ifallthraindrops.  :D  Friendly reminder.  ;)

And astormorray, do you want me to re-submit my questionnaire?  I know my answer was lengthy, but those are all crafts I do relatively regularly.  :D  I just have a lot of hobbies.

Oh MAN! I am so in love with rainbows this would be perfect. But I am finishing up my first swap really soon. I don't want to rush through the one I am doing in order to be in this one. I hope I finish soon so my partner can receive her item before the sign ups here are closed.

you know, I hope I'm not giving anything away here, but I can't help but notice I'm the only one so far who likes pastels.

Or, um, doesn't hate them?    ;)

Well, my issue is that I love pink and I hate red, and so, pastels gain ground by default... Also, I love peach, though I'm allergic to peaches.

@ astormorray, i have some placemats with just about every color of pastel there is.  if i can find them, would you like them?  i actually think they are nice, in a kitsch way, which is why i guess they slipped past my pastel ban.  see, i think i got to dislike pastels because people always bought pastel clothes for me in HS and college and those just felt grandma-ish or overly girly to me.  but there are exceptions, of course.

My husband's grandma, a fantastic lady, painted her walls various pastel colors.  I'm talking sea foam green, baby blue, light yellow, baby girl pink, and faint lavender.  And then accented with paintings of the same colors.  We went to visit his grandfather one year, and I was SHOCKED by how pastel everything was.  Best part is, in the midst of it there was a white leather couch.

It was like walking back into another time.  :D

:) My mother always (and I mean always) bought pastels for me while growing up....and as a result - I have learned to hate most pastels. I probably would have liked them had they not been pushed in my face - the result is, my fav color is black. Hehehehee... ;)

I don't mind pastels. I just prefer bright colors for my rainbows. I think pastel rainbows would be cute for kids probably. Really I just love any colors.  :D

Well, since we're at an even number and it's almost time to close sign-ups anyway, I thought we'd just close a day early so we don't end up with an uneven number of swappers.

I've sent it to you now.  Sorry 'bout that.

I suppose it's the price of doing business while the toddler is around... first she wanted to sit on my lap and "help" then she found something to play with on the desk, then she lost it, then I had to find something to replace it, because she kept asking for it, and we couldn't find it, then she stole my pencil and then she wanted me to write her name on the drawing she'd made with my pencil, and when I said it looked like a seashell, she wanted me to draw some seashells to compare it to, and it's a wonder anyone got anyone's questionnaires....  ;)

Due to my massive lack of supplies at college, where I am until the second of May, and things like finals coming up next week, I think the majority of my crafting will get done when I get home, giving me about two weeks to craft. But I should mostly only be working in the evenings/I'll have a lot of free time at work, so that should be plenty of time, especially with what I have planned. I can't wait to get started though! I have some awesome ideas. : )

Just make me whatever, it's not like we don't have a ton of birthdays and Christmases to go through that you can make the rest for.

Also, I'm taking  a poll everyone... what should jenicat's brother (my fiance) and I get her for Mother's Day? Something crafty and awesome!

I've already started on one item. It could end up being a small, medium or large depending on how far I go with it. Oh man so much color goodness, I love it!  ;D

On another subject, do any of you know if you can take needles or small scissors on a plane? I'm going to be taking a little vacation in middle of this swap and I was hoping to maybe get a little crafting done on the plane.

I think it probably depends on the airport and/or airline.  Certain bigger airports, like Dulles Int'l Airport, for instance, probably wouldn't allow the scissors.  Smaller ones that don't offer international flights may.  Call the airline to be sure; you wouldn't want something confiscated and then be SOL for the rest of your trip (unless, of course, you can find scissors and needles where you're going!).  :)

The TSA is who you have to worry about if you're flying domestically: www.tsa.gov/travelers (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers)

They have a whole page dedicated just to knitting items ;D

For scissors, I think they're ok so long as they're under 4" long.

According to TSA, as long as the blade (from joint to tip) is shorter than 4", you can bring them. I have definitely brought needles, knitting needles, and scissors on planes. Including international flights leaving from Dulles, no less.

Sorry, I typed this before I saw Ma Rut posted a link to the TSA site. :D

oh! That's good news about the scissors. I'll check out the site and look at all that. I'm going to Kansas City to Seattle so not international but the airports may be.

I think if anything I'll be sure not to bring nice scissors and I can get new needles and stuff when I get there if I need to. thanks for all the advice and info. :)

P.S. that car is my desktop background right now!  :)

Why no, I don't!  :D

I've roped off tonight as a time to get some stuff done!  I've been scrounging for glass jars, so, I should be able to work on two things at once!  Two secret things.  ;)

Also, maybe I could go to the ____ store on the way home from work.

Title: Re: Rainbow swap, round 3 - sign ups *closed*, send out 5/15/09

They say a medium is 2-3 hours of work and a large is more... but for some crafts that doesn't make sense (for instance, there's nothing I can knit in less than 3 hours, even stuff I'd consider small...)

another determinate is price of materials. they say $10 or less is small, $10-20 is medium, $30+ is large.

But it's really a matter of both time and money.  And I doubt I've spend more than $10 for materials on items I'm counting as mediums or larges, since I have or will be putting in a lot of time transforming them into what they'll be in the end.

I guess the answer is, it's up to you...   ::)

I'm almost always the first sender in swaps....I'm a tad ADD & OCD..... ::) :P

funny how those tendencies have the opposite effect on me (distracted by too many ideas, and afraid to start something and mess up).
but i guess that happens a lot, sometimes even in the same person... (OCD neat-freaks vs. OCD hoarders, autistics who have trouble with language vs. autistics who specialize in language)

i guess it just goes to show all the strange flavors of life and crafting!

Well, today is my last day of classes and I found out that I have gotten better grades than I expected.  This semester was rough, but I've been a trooper!  I'm about to go celebrate, but just wanted to let everyone know that after eight hours so far, I'm almost done with my large item.  This has been the most inspiring swap I've ever joined and will probably end up making some rainbow goodies for my etsy shop too.  It's surprising how all of the colorful craftyness is transcending into the rest of my life.  I've been in the best mood working on these crafts!

Well, my large has had some issues, (which have much more to do with my... lack of preparation than anything else) but I think I'm clear of them now, after a few hours of cursing. *note to self: no more "short cuts"*  It's looking pretty good, and I can get down to the fun part tonight!

I think I may be sending on the last day or so, though....   :P  I plan to do two more items, but I've not really started either yet.   :-\

I've completed one small (I guess size and cost it's a medium, but I think it's really a small based on time) and I've got about 10 other things on my to do list. And I am slowly getting little packages in the mail for one small item ;) OOH! MYSTERIOUS!

I am frantically trying to get the crafty detective swap done and then will fully devote myself to this swap. Only bummer is Jenicat is my crafting buddy and we can't craft for this swap together :( BUT her brother (my FH) picked out an extra for her ;)

I've got one medium done, and one medium half done, and the other is taking forever/becoming a large.  I'm still hopeful I'll finish by next Friday, though.

I've been collecting cute little boxes for packing them up in, too.   ;)

i have collected pretty much all my materials... except for this one thing that is supposed to be coming in the mail and is weirdly taking longer to get here from somewhere inside the US than some supplies from Asia that were ordered the same week.  oh well...

i should be able to get in some working on this swap this weekend, just because i will be so bored with grading i will have to do something to not go crazy.  but then grades are due on monday, and i imagine i can finish up really well by the 15th.

Jenicat - I was thinking about that one item we were talking about- about how I could make it for Ri... you know, the one I'd have to get stuff from your house to make? And, well, you have my serger :D

I was going to make a few items for jenicat tonight, but I decided that rather than trying to make them on top of the mess that is my craft area, I should spend the evening tidying up so I could find things. SO crafting tomorrow it shall be!

So I FINALLY started crafting for monsterrawr (as I mailed packages for previous swaps so I have more time), and I've already had to restart it like, 12 times to make it not look like clown vomit. UGH. But it's going well now, and I've got some ideas for other crafts. I'll probably be able to send on time, but I'm not sure. We'll see when Friday gets here.

mcbenno and I will be exchanging in person on the 18th - it's the first day we both have off and don't have prior commitments, and we don't want to cut happy rainbow time short!  ;)  Besides, if we had mailed our packages to one another and lived in separate states, they'd be getting there about that time anyway!  :D

Well I'm personally really happy I don't have to work this weekend, because I can get a ton of crafting done that way!  I have 2 other swaps to craft for right now, and in one of them I have 2 partners, so I have 4 people to craft for total.

Granted, one of them doesn't need to be done until July, so that's nice.  :)  But still, of the other 3 packages 1 needs to be done by the 15th (this one, but like I said, we'll exchange on the 18th) and the other 2 by June 1st.  So it'll be great to have this weekend free.  :)  I have tons of plans for mcbenno and I've only executed 3 of them.  Heh.

whew. thank you so much for moving the date.

yesterday i did one side of what might be a small medium(*)... and that went fine and it's drying and stuff... (except with the weird damp weather we are having lately, i think i might need to use the extra send-out time for drying all the sides of it!)

but then i wanted to start another medium and discovered that the _________ that i could have sworn i had bought 2 each of red, black, and plain... a couple months ago...  well, the color i needed for MoxiePurple's item was missing.  maybe i decided not to buy them in the last minute, and then forgot?  anyway, i have to go to _______ on the weekend and get one in that color.  and maybe a spare for me.

(*) i never know what "size" things are because i don't know whether to count the time it actually takes me, or the time it would take a person who knew what they were doing... is that normal, or am i overthinking it?

possibly over thinking.  I go by the person who knows what they're doing estimate, personally.  It always takes me a long time to get stuff straight in my head, especially things I haven't done before, (and even when I have a pattern, sometimes it doesn't help!) and I don't count that time.  Also... I'm really slow at some crafts, even when I know what I'm doing, so, I count the time it would take a normal person to do it.

although, it's really a combination of size, skill, $ spent on supplies, and time invested... so, who knows.

I normally just guess based on the item as opposed to how long it took, etc. Especially for things like knitting, because there's nothing I can knit in like, less than an hour. Except maybe a swatch. Well, if I ever swatched, which I don't. : )

Also, I finished a medium and two smalls for monsterrawr. I have one for craft left to do, and then I'll be finished, but I am definitely glad for the date move cause there is NO WAY I'd be ready to send tomorrow, especially with my crazy work schedule this week (nine hour days every day for a part-time job... UGH).

Though for the craft I worked on today, I got to do something I have done since I was a kid, so that was a ton of fun. And I rather like how it came out! : )

Hey all!  The inland hurricane that went through my area wiped me out of power and phone service for about two weeks.  My town was one of the hardest hit, but I'm back now.  Just wanted to say that I sent out my package to astormorray--lots of crochet goodies, got carried away, but I think this the funnest swap ever!

I received from aimeerox!  I'll post pictures Sunday or Monday.  Very awesome!

And, I was talking to my Mom about the third item, and she had an idea that has really gotten me over my hesitation...  and I now know what I will do!

I'm done! Just finished up my last item just now. I will most likely be mailing tomorrow, though it looks like I'm going to have to use a mailing envelope or something similar, so I don't think it'll be large enough for a DC number. I will definitely send everyone a picture of my receipt though.

OK, I've been working on this item now for a few days and... ibuprofen has been helping me get through it.  :P

But now I don't want to give it away.  Luckily mcbenno is my best friend so I'll be allowed visitation.  ::)

i am making 2 different ones of thing #1 (in order of how i had the ideas) just in case i get the style wrong.  plus they are simple to decorate, except if i try to use the sewing machine, which i might to guarantee greater permanence, in which case we enter my semi-clueless territory... oh well.

and it looks like thing #2 is finished.  and nothing fell off, so i guess i chose the right glue.

and i THINK i finished painting thing#3, unless i decide to decorate the sides.  i can't decide if it needs more designs or not.

then this other thing i was going to make before i got the idea of thing#3, i did not have a good idea about how to make them.
so i might send some supplies as an extra.
everybody likes supplies, right?

Done and packed and ready to go.

Item 3 may be my favorite thing ever.  I'm going to make myself one... after the move.  :P stupid move.  (I'd have done it this week, if I hadn't run out of ___ making one for aimeerox.  I'm just not going to make it back to the ___ store anytime soon, so... it'll have to wait.)

Anyway, the most trouble I had was with this silly extra I picked up at the store... I hid it because I thought if the child saw it she'd raise a fuss, but of course, I couldn't remember *where* I'd hidden it.   ::)  Found it eventually, in the kitchen.

yay!

I finished another large today for mcbenno, and I am SO FREAKING GLAD IT IS DONE ohhhh you don't even know how happy I am.  I think it turned out nice, although not exactly how I'd planned, and I'm not super happy with one aspect of it, but that's more of a personal thing than a pattern mistake, because it came out just how it SHOULD have... I just tend to grumble over most things I make regardless of how the recipient feels.

Ugh.  me, too.  I'm trying not to be the girl who points out all the mistakes she's made on something when someone compliments it.  But really, I count them up, and they end up being all I see when I look at things I've made.  ::)

I made another medium last night and it was the first time I'd ever made one of these particular things, and I like how it turned out!  :)  Technically it's a small, but I have to go get something to make it a medium.  That doesn't make much sense right now to anyone but me.  :D

Just a few more things...

I've got

2 larges
2 mediums
1 small

and I have plans for a few more smalls!

mcbenno is my best friend, so we decided to go way over the required number of points/items.

Aw, thanks!  :)

I think she'll like everything.  Well, she better, because I know where she lives.   :o

Hehe.

I just completed two smalls, one of which is actually part of a medium, and they are really super small, so I'm not even counting them.  Then again, I don't have to count them, because I've already completed the required amount of stuff.  So whatever.

Anyway, this is such a fun swap and I have barely purchased anything for it!  HA!

I finished everything I had planned. I should have finished last Thursday, but then I procrastinated. One thing I couldn't figure out how to do, so it became something else entirely; now I want one. I think I'm going to make a last minute thing, then mail off tomorrow. =D

There was something I was going to make originally and got so frustrated in the drawing/planning stage that I decided not to, so now on the eve of [extended] send outs I decided to try again and did some top stitiching with my sewing machine that I thought was going to be pretty much impossible, but it worked and looks awesome. Now I'm all proud of myself. Woot! =D Aaaand I wanna keep it for myself. hehe

Hey folks,

Some sad news...

ifallthraindrops has been flaked on!  :(  Would anyone here like to volunteer to be her angel, before I post a request on the angel board?  If you can't do it, I am sure someone over there will be glad to, but I thought I'd ask around here first, since we're all already in the rainbow spirit!  ;)

If you do decide you'd like to angel, PM me and I will send her questionnaire (she lives in the USA).  You will, of course, receive a year of FOC status as a "thank you" from Craftster.  :)
