Title: Ongoing Wish Swap Rounds 45, 46 and 47 - Discussion
Post by: sunspotted on March 31, 2009 07:17:18 PM
Spring is an excellent time for a new discussion thread, don't you think?  Of course it's been snowing for 5 days straight here so it looks more like Christmas than spring, but someone, somewhere must have crocuses.  Right?  Tell me there are crocuses in the world please.  Before the neverending winter steals my soul.

The June bugs are out in full force in Florida! I'm not sure what crocuses are though ???

We've got crocuses coming up here in Michigan! I'm not sure how well they'll make it through the next week (snow is on it's way), but it's nice to see a little color. ;)

And there are some here in Colorado . . . covered in snow from the last storm and two more coming this week . . . yay.  :P

No crocuses in northern Michigan, but our snow is subsiding!  I'm so sorry, bsonlytoots, that you've never seen crocuses!  Here is a link so sunspotted can at least gaze upon the joy of crocus in cyberspace and bsonlytoots can experience the feeling of spring popping up in wintery places: http://jugalbandi.info/2008/03/crocuses/

And here is Harriet Beecher-Stowe's tribute to "The Crocus" in honor of National Poetry month:

Around the soft, green swelling mound
We scooped the earth away,
And buried deep the crocus-bulbs
Against a coming day.
“These roots are dry, and brown, and sere;
Why plant them here?” he said,
“To leave them, all the winter long,
So desolate and dead.”

“Dear child, within each sere dead form
There sleeps a living flower,
And angel-like it shall arise
In spring’s returning hour.”

It's chilly but sunny here in central Indiana and the magnolia trees are blooming. I also saw some white crocuses up the street the other day.

Awww... we have some crosuses here in Southern Ontario... But... it is supposed to rain all weekend and then turn to snow... Right when I finish sewing my first skirt...

Shucks...

Hey everybody.  Thanks for the crocus updates.  It has stopped snowing here and the sun is even out, but its still terribly windy and coldish.  But an improvement over last week at least.

Anyway, I have 900 million PMs to respond to, updates to do and people to approve but I wasn't online at all yesterday or this morning.  My 2 1/2 year old nephew did his level best to electrocute himself yesterday afternoon.  He's fine, fortunately, but it was alot of drama.  So please be patient and I should be all caught up by tonight.  Thanks!

I was just looking at some of the recent wish lists and I noticed there were a few for items I make. It made me smile. ;D I'm full up on my claims right now but keep those items on your lists! I'll be sending out two of my claim packages tomorrow and I always try to claim for things people request by me whenever possible. Thanks for the compliment and know that I will make every effort to snag people as possible as my claims free up again. ;D

AQ's socks have movie-star dust knitted into them!  I was knitting at work over the weekend (I work at the front desk of a museum), when Colin Firth and his family came in--evidently he and Orlando Bloom are filming in the area.  While buying his admission ticket, his gaze briefly fell upon the socks.  :)  So, AQ, your socks are famous!  Or at least, in the proximity of fame...  :)

Colin Firth cooties are some awesome cooties to have in your socks (or elsewhere).  I always get him and that greasy Colin Farrell mixed up at first (and say "ewww") but then I remember (and turn my ewww into "ewwwawesome").   ;D

In famousness, Crystal Gayle's tour bus driver stayed at my resort once.  She was parked briefly in my driveway.  Yeah, that's all I got.

Ohhhhh, I shall wear the socks lovingly and never wash them. ;D

I'm terrible, though. I had to google who Colin Firth was. (Yeah, I suck at celebrities.)

I'm finishing up bsonlytoots' wall organizer tonight and will hopefully mail that and sunspotted's yarn out tomorrow before we get another blizzard on Friday!  At least that's what the forecasters are predicting.  1-3 feet.  yay.  I am SO done with winter!

I am working on A2K's doggy art but over the weekend I broke out in back to back shingles outbreaks. Taking pain meds with allergy meds is making me very loopy and cranky. I will be late & I am so sorry.

Purely out of interest, what happens if a round ends and though you've been approved you haven't made a claim?

I believe the "correct" way to do it is for the organizer to open a help desk ticket a get the feedback removed from your profile (since you didn't actually participate).

If you don't make a claim during the month then we will have the swap removed from your feedback.  POOF!!!  As if it was never even there. [/dramatic voice]   ;D

In personal news, they are predicting 10 cm of snow this weekend.  I'm seriously going to cry and possibly never stop.

Thank you!  Clearly I missed my true calling to the stage.   ;)

We don't really have spring here on the Canadian Shield.  Generally we have winter, winter, winter, winter, winter, winter, winter, fake spring, winter then BANG overnight it's summer.  Nineteen hours of daylight for 2 1/2 months, two months of gorgeous autumn and back to winter.

Hey, speaking of Florida.  Would any of you know a source for good bottled key lime juice that wouldn't cost 90 million dollars to ship to Canada?  Or would anyone be interested in trading for some Canadian foodstuffs?

Not that I live anywhere near Florida - I'm in London, actually, and not the one in Ontario! - now I wish I had an excuse to trade for Canadian foodstuffs. There's that stuff that's like our tablet but with maple syrup that has eight billion calories a crumb and makes me want to die of NOM...

OH AND POUTINE.

Not that you can ship that. But I sometimes make myself poutine here in England, because OMG NOM.

And toutin, and nanaimo bars, and sugar pie...I've never actually been to Canada, but the food is win :-)

Craziness! Then again, we don't have Autumn here and we have very little actual Winter or Spring. So it's typically Hot, Hotter, Hell wants their heat back, Hotter, Hot, Warm, two weeks total of cold tops and repeat.

Hrm... I haven't looked for any either but I'll keep an eye out too. If I find some I'll let you know. Most I remember of Canadian food from when I went up there like twelve years ago was damn you guys have good snacks. ;D

See, that's what I love about Michigan. We have spring, summer, fall and winter. There's usually some crossover (mainly with winter weather), but we have very defined seasons.

Well, I've just made my first ever OWS claim - I'm very excited! I'm going to make some handspun yarn, and I ordered the fibres already - I'm really stoked about the ones I found, and I hope my sendee likes them too. I can just about spin a whole skein in one day if I work at it really hard, so hopefully having to wait for delivery shouldn't hold me up too much or make me late or anything.

Now I'm all excited about seeing who's going to claim me :-D I think I might be about to become an OWS addict [blush]

(And thinking about it, this means I need to finish up the yarn I'm working on at the moment so that I can get it off the spindle in time to start this one. Back to work for me, then...)

I just checked my tracking numbers and it looks like I have not one but TWO packages waiting for me at home tonight. (I get off work at 7pm.) Which is great after the day I had yesterday. Long story short, my car broke down in the middle lane of a major road yesterday. I was on my way back from the dr's and I wasn't allowed to eat so I had to push my car out of the way on a fasting stomach, in 85F weather. I'm not a big woman and my car is old and heavy. (1990 Buick Century.) Let me tell you, I'm feeling it in my shoulder today. But for the kindness of a stranger, I'd have been stuck. I don't even have a cell. A nice young kid - who's apparently as old as my car - gave me a ride the remaining 5 miles home. My car's still in the shop (don't know what's wrong yet) and I had to get a ride from a friend into work today.

So anyway, of all days, I could use some happy mail when I get home today.

Ahhh, that stinks! Sorry for your crappy day PFD ... if you lived closer (not that you're far) I'd give ya a ride! BUT you'd have to be stuck in the car for a ride with 5 kids and High School Musical playing on the DVD ... maybe walking in the heat would be more enjoyable! :D

Let's just hope I can live up to your expectations :-p It might be a while (though not late, still within the two weeks!) before I can send it out, because I got really bad backache yesterday and spinning's not good for that, so I may not be up for any mega sessions - and also I'm out of town from Wednesday to Friday and can't take my spindle with me. But I'll be sending on time :-)

Finished my goodies for Stitch last night and I was itching to claim again so I did.  :)  I'm trying to pace myself this round by only claiming when I am ready to send to my previous claim.  I so wanted to claim claire313, dip_n_dot, and QueenNinjaMonkey.  Hopefully soon!!!

I finallllllllllly managed to ship out my claim for musiclady. Five days late :-( I'm very sad to be sending late already, but the damned yarn just WOULD NOT dry and obviously I couldn't send it wet! I think I might skip round 46 - I've got the Easy Peasy swap to do and I think signups for the yarn and fibre swap open on Monday. So many swaps, so little time!

That stinks. I'm on the receiving end of a package from the US (not yours though) and it's killing me waiting so long to recieve... It's not for a swap, it's something I've purchased. Don't they have an estimated shipping time for packages from the US to Canada? I'm about to start a stupid customs service rant >:(

Well, I know what happened to one of my packages.  It ook it to the post office because I thought it needed a customs form.  But the post mistriess told me it didn't.

Guess what just showed up on my doorstep?  The package for Rain!  You would think the post office would know what the proper forms are!  So sorry!

I am so sorry Rain.  I will take it back to the post office tomorrow and put the proper form on it.

I don't know. They started announcing our forthcoming Ikea two years ago - and it was a first story on the news!! They're running shuttles from nearby Ybor City just to get from the parking garage there to the Ikea. I mean, I want to check it out to see what the big deal is but...oy! It's clearly insanity.

Did you see the sales flyer that came out before it opened? It said something like, "Line begins Monday, May 4th" which was a full 48 hours before opening! :o

Actually, that probably is my package.  I claimed you for some shirts for AbbyRose.  I have rarely ever sent to Canada before, and I didn't really pay attention to where the people I claimed were from, so it was a bit amusing to see that they were all in canada! lol.

I just took a trip to Ikea this weekend. It reminds me of when I was a kid and had a mini kitchen from fischer-price except its life-sized and its a whole house, not just the kitchen  :D You just wanna play in all the set ups!

It was madness though; memorial weekend sales. I managed to get in and out in a little over an hour.

Oh man, I love Ikea!!!! I've gotten over spending too much time in the show room portion. I skip most of it and go straight to the shopping downstairs. I always find something I want need and can't live without that is pretty cheap. A lot of it is actually for craft purposes too!  ;D

I'll take new kitchen cabinets while you are there!! :D

I will eventually get custom cabinets for the kitchen, we have an older home that has limited kitchen space & being Miss Baker I need more space.

For all those that have not been to an Ikea - wow just go now. My boyfriend even likes Ikea and he hates home stuff. When we bought the house we wanted a lot of clean lines & solid colors so we bought over $1,000 worth of stuff from Ikea and hauled it back home with U-Haul.

Some tips:
-If you think you want furniture bring a U-haul, you can rent one for $20-ish and pack it up, Ikea does deliver but when we inquired it was $300 for a couch and we live 1 hour away!
-If you have a bigger car (my boyfriend drives a Izuzu Trooper and it works great) some small couches can fit if you fold down the seats, the boxes are compact!
-Even if you do not have kid's check out the kid's section. They have some solid color plastic frames for $2 a pop that hold art work perfectly!
-Wear comfortable shoes, you will be walking around a lot!
-Make sure the components come with your item. We found out once at home the desk my boyfriend bought did not come with legs!
-Bring reusable bags, Ikea makes you bag your own stuff, they have bags you can buy up at the counter for like $0.60 each.
-Use your ATM if you can, you get a coupon for next times shopping trip based on how much you spend.
-Bring your camera for decorating ideas!

I have to say something here folks. Because I don't think I've ever been more appalled and insulted in my entire life. If, upon receiving something that another person made for you, it's different than you expected, do NOT send them a rude message telling them you're "disappointed." Especially if they sent you exactly what you asked for as a custom piece and you didn't bother ensuring it was a size or dimension you wanted before requesting it.

Keep that kind of thing to yourself and have some MANNERS. Just say, "thank you" and move on. It's utterly and beyond rude to presume something about someone's work and then insult them when it's not. Had certain sizes/dimensions been a requirement up front, you should have stated that in your request. It was HANDMADE FOR YOU so respect that if nothing else.

Rudeness is a disappointing attitude in anyone, child or adult.  Sadly, common decency and common sense are none so common anymore.  (I will refrain from talking about my day here to spare you all).   ;D

I have one claim from OWS 46 that I completely forgot to send.  Oops.  I've just been putzing along, adding to the box, thinking I had all the time in the world.  And suddenly its May 27th already?  Where did the time go?  Sorry partner.  I'll hit the post office tomorrow, promise.

No problemo :) I don't wear jewelry very often, but when I do I like it to be made by me that way if anyone asks about it I can say "I made it". :D I am however browsing through your posts now to see if I 'need' anything :) I must say, the transition you've made in your tree of life pendants is amazing from when you first started! And thanks! Yeah my early ones are embarrassingly bad compared to the ones I make now. Heh. Oh well, that's what a year and about a hundred Trees will do for you I guess!

And I've TOTALLY been making out on the tees! It's awesome because it's hot 98.9% of the time in Florida, so I wear them every day (like now at work! *lol*) and having cool custom ones rock. Craftsters have such creativity!

Canada to the UK is always a crap shoot.  Everything I have sent to your side of the pond has arrived in less than a week or taken 2 months.  There's never an inbetween.  Sadly it looks like your package might be the 2 months version.

Post by: sunspotted on May 29, 2009 03:41:16 PM
Hello everybody.  We've had a couple of incidents lately, so I thought a general reminder post might be a good idea.  If you make something that is not one-size-fits-all then please make sure you ask your partner for sizes.  This goes for clothes, jewelry, pillow covers, art and lots of other things that my tired brain can't come up with right now.  That said, if you have something on your list or wist that needs sizing, please mention it and if your partner says they claimed you for a hat then there is no reason you can't send them a reminder that you have a giant melon and are allergic to alpaca.   ;D

Also, when you claim somebody you are expected to send them a nice little PM to say howdy, ask for their address, maybe discuss details about the claim.  Don't wait two weeks until you are ready to send before you even say hello.  You don't have to become BFFs and email 40 times a day, but I expect there to be at least two PMs from claimer to claimee - 1) "Hi I claimed you for XXX, please send me your address" and 2) "Hi, I sent your claim today, hope you like it".  And two PMs from claimee to claimer - 1) "YAY, my address is XXXX."  and 2) "Received your package today, thanks!"

While I'm pontificating, please don't forget to PM your long-suffering  ;) organizers when you SEND and RECEIVE.

Thank you everybody.  We've had a few excellent rounds now.  Hooray for all the awesome stuff you send and hooray for no flakers and hooray for those who post pictures we can ooh and ahhh over.  Keep up the excellent work.  Gold stars all around.

Thanks for your hard work on this Sunspotted and Twiz!!
I think it's great when people include details such as size needed, colors they like, fabrics they like, wrist size, etc in their list.  It makes it claiming easier on those who are using part of their stash to craft from.  :)

Hi all!

I haven't been in this swap since round 35, and now it's already round 47!  :o I'm back now anyway.  :D

I would love to claim from your list, stitch81, but I'm not approved yet.  :-\ Will claim if I get approved in time. :)

I've started on aeronberry's wisty surprises and have the design in mind for the tee for astuko's daughter.  This weekend is going to very interesting.  I finally have a defense date for my thesis and just realized that I have to get a semi final version to my committee members by Monday.  Heh!  No sleep for me this weekend but hey I'll need a break from the writing which is where the crafting comes in.

lol.. I keep forgetting about the discussion thread!  Thanks for claiming me gavagai! I sent you a long pm! I was so excited to see you were from sweden.  We have friends that live in Stromstad and got to spend 2 weeks with them in March.  Also got to see the Vasa in Stockholm.  That was just way too cool.  I love stuff like that.

Anyway.. I actually have my first claim for this round completed and sent out.  I have quite a bit done for my second claim.  It was one of those days were I just felt like crafting..so I did.  The kids were at the kitchen table "crafting" (tossing playdough everywhere)...lol so I was able to get a lot done.  I have been to the post office so much recently that the lady just gave me a small stack of blank DC forms so I could fill them out before bringing the packages in to save some time! lol.

Wow!  Good luck on your thesis rlynn!!  My hubby made the mistake of thinking he only needed to turn in a rough draft of his and his committee went ballistic.  We worked like crazies for the next two days beefing his up.  Crazy!

P.S. I can't wait to see what you craft for Lana!!!

I added a few books to my wists. Don't know if that helps.  :-\ If you would order a book to have sent to me from Amazon or something, please make sure that it's shipped from Europe, because otherwise I may end up having to pay quite expensive custom fees and taxes. There is always amazon.co.uk or bookdepository.co.uk ... Just a hint in case anyone feels like sending books. As you can see from my swap wish list I am also interested in lots of other books than the ones on my wist.

bought the tee that i am going to stencil for atsuko's daughter today!

atsuko, I hope you don't mind but its actually a tank...i had a dickens of a time finding an un-embellished 100% cotton tee that would work for what i have in mind. no idea why because it shouldn't have been that difficult, but there you have it.  its a very modest tank with wide straps and a slight flare to the torso, just in case you're wondering.  it should work very well with what i want to do plus its quite cute on its own.  if you would prefer an actual tee, let me know, i can try a different store!

oh and thanks for the well wishes on my thesis.  yeah i knew i had to turn in a final draft but i wasn't thinking when my committee chair set the date.  i have to turn it into all the committee members 2 weeks before the defense date.  for me that would be this coming monday and i'm pretty far from a final draft right now...eep!  your husband was probably further along than i am right now.  *sigh* but i got a lot done last night...plus i asked my sister in law to come watch Aria tomorrow so i can work some more...and i still have tonight, tomorrow night and all day sunday when phil is home.  i can do it...it'll be painful but thats how its supposed to be.

aeronberry, you have far too many great things on your wist, i am almost done with one wisty surprise but since its rather small i'm trying to pick another...but there are far too many options.  thats better than me having no idea what to make, i suppose!  heh!

The plan is to finish up my crafts for all claims and ship out by the end of next week.  well...that depends a bit on whether something i ordered for gavagai gets to me before the end of the week.  if it doesn't i will ship out atsuko and aeronberry's stuff the end of this week and ship gavagai's stuff out the beginning of following week.

: )

I've decided I'm going to sign up for next round. I don't have space for one right now, but I've sent for all my swaps, so I should have four swaps spaces opening up in the next week or so! I already made my wish list, and since I'm organizing the ongoing atc swaps I'm very familiar with the rules on ongoing swaps!

stitch81 - I've been hovering, looking at your wist and I think I might be able to make some of the items, but... none of your items are clickable to get to a larger image. This one (http://www.wists.com/stitch81/ed10b74ddfd09d580743ba446b8f1408?offset=40), this one (http://www.wists.com/stitch81/876835e885f5c65a1129737f2365b919?offset=40), and this one (http://www.wists.com/stitch81/39fe3342f03cd86882e193a738d8fe28?offset=40) for example are just tiny - I can't see them enough to try and replicate them. Any chance you know where some of your jewelry images came from? They just all link back to wists.com. I'd hate to try and make something for you without getting a clear look at it.  :-\

Typical weekend slowdown, mcook.  Don't stress.  It always amazes me how many Craftsters seem to work M-F and have weekends off to actually have a life.  I know almost no one like that IRL, here in tourist land.   ;D  Weekends are crazy busy.

I'm still working on part 2 of PFD's package from Round 46, so no claiming for me until that is done.  And now I have to go make some key lime pies and oatmeal raisin cookies and potato bread.  Happy Saturday everyone.

I've updated my list with both new crafty items and new supplies.. trying to unstick the swap!  :D

I've ordered supplies for oneredboot's claim and they've already shipped so I should get them in the next day or two.  Still working on the ankle socks and leighi123's claim should be shipping tomorrow!

I keep looking at the lists but nobody's really had any jewelry items on their lists lately, so I haven't been able to pick anyone. I've been trying to keep my claims more frugal because cash has been tight and shipping is pricey. I've got plenty of jewelry-making supplies on hand though. Sadly, I haven't been able to make much for anyone lately.

I didn't remember to take pictures of anything I sent in Round 46.  It's hard enough for me to actually remember to take and post pictures of what I receive.   ;D  I need a big sign in my crafting area(s) with a picture of a camera on it or something like that.  Or perhaps a personal assistant who would remind me of such things.  That would work too.

Title: Re: Ongoing Wish Swap Rounds 45, 46 and 47 - Discussion
Post by: rlynn on July 03, 2009 07:53:32 PM
haha!  I love the sign idea...i would also like a personal assistant...he could keep my craft room tidy. i typically email myself a list of stuff i have to do since i check my email about 15 times a day.  but i find with aria that i have to stay on top of things or else stuff just piles up.  as soon as i receive i try to take pics, but i typically have to wait til she's in bed or i'm at work to post them.  i take pics of the stuff i send at work since i only send on days i work...the post office is two blocks from work and if i send on a day i dont work, i have to haul aria there...not fun since i take the bus everywhere and still carry her in the carrier.  though it might make a funny site...me with toddler strapped to front juggling boxes and backpack full of baby supplies.  heh!

I'll send it along to Twiz to post in the official thread too.  We don't generally start a gallery thread until someone has sent, which as far as my PM box tells me, no one has done yet.  If someone has, just let me know and I'll start a gallery too.  Also, feel free to PM either of the organizers if you have any questions

Go forth and discuss the wonder of Round 48.   ;D
