Details of Swap:

It's all about birds!
This swap was greatly inspired by Creative Kismet (http://blog.creativekismet.com/2009/02/16/swimming-in-a-sea-of-birds/). Thank you!

Like the originator of this idea, I love the idea of collecting handcrafted birds to display around my house. My ideal solution for this is to have all sorts of birds from all sorts of places in all sorts of mediums. This gives each person all the room they need to be CREATIVE! :D

This swap will be a group swap with handmade birds, in any medium (paper, felt, glass, ANYTHING!), traded among friends. Each bird should be roughly the size of the palm of your hand (roughly 4x6) and can be two- or three-dimensional.

The group aspect comes in because we will be split into groups and you will make ONE BIRD for EVERY PERSON in your group. So if you have 5 people in your group, you will make and send 5 birds by the send date.

You may choose to send to ONE group of 5 people or to TWO groups (10 birds total). Please specify in the questionnaire.

This IS an international swap so please bear that in mind when crafting your birds as you probably don't want to make them solid steel or anything. ;)

Before sending, please take a picture of your birds and email it to the organizer ([email protected]) to confirm that you are ready to send. Only when ALL members of YOUR group have done so should you send the birds out.

Rules:

Please put "HANDMADE BIRDS" in the title of all pms.

ETA: This swap may entail you sending a bird or two internationally. If you cannot send internationally even a few ounces, please do not sign up for this swap. Thank you!

IMPORTANT: Do not send your birds until everyone in your group is "green-lighted". All participants must check in at least once a week, by pm or by posting in this thread.

If your partner is within the US, you MUST get a DC and pm it to the organizer and your partner.

NOTE: Feedback will ONLY be given after you send, receive, and post pictures of what you received. If you do not have a camera, please make arrangements with your partner so they can take pictures before they send.

To participate, and to indicate you've read the rules, pm the questionnaire and put the word RADIO somewhere in the message.

To be approved, the questionnaire must be completely filled out (unless you don't have any wists/websites, of course).

Ooo! I love birds!

I joined 2/22. Does that mean if I sign up at the last minute I can join? Or do I only count as a member for a month as of 3/23?

Also, I am entirely new to swaps. What does "DC" mean?

I am not the organizer, just a fellow lover of birds :) but once you've hit your month mark, you'll be eligible for swaps and many organizers make a note of your membership sign up date and just add you to the swap particpants after your month anniversary.

DC#s are delivery confirmation numbers you can get from the unites states post office that allows you to track your package, this just verifies for your organizer that you did send out your package and if something happens where it doenst get to your parnter, you can track the package and figure out what happened to it.  You can buy these for $0.65 at the post office of you can use usps.com and you can get your DC# for free there.

Ok let me get this straight...
I make 5 birdies and send them

5 of the same birds?

and I get 5 different birds sent to me?
I like birdies.

The other day my daughter and I were driving home and she was telling the birds (flying in the air) that she loves them and that she was going home to have dinner.  too cute!
Also there is a farm near my home that has peacocks and we were talking about dinner and I asked her what peacocks eat for dinner and she said "Steak"

She cracks me up!!!

You could make 5 of the same bird, or 5 different ones, or 5 different mediums, it's up to you! (and your partner's preferences, if it works out that way)

You will then send ONE to EACH of your partners. And keep one for your self!

Ooo... I love birds!  I am thinking about this swap.  I only have one slot open right now and I've reserved that for a different swap.  If I get feedback in time on another swap I'll probably join.  :)

Ooooh, I really want to participate! However, I'm still a couple days and a couple posts away from being eligible. (One month for me is the 17th, and this is my 13th post, I think.) Can I go ahead and submit my info, or should I wait until I've hit those marks? I love birds and really want to decorate with them. :)

I might have to do this. I've had a fairly long break from crafting (health issues, which haven't gone away completely yet), but I think this swap would be a nice re-introduction, as it were. :)

(As an aside, from where I'm sitting I can see 5 7 birds, 16 paper cranes, and several pieces of jewellery with feathers or birds. Oh, and a cardboard pterodactyl. I might have a bit of an obsession, yes.)

I thought it would be relatively low-stress, not too time consuming, and easy on the hands. Also, I love birds, so. :D (The health thing isn't going to go away entirely for quite some time. I have tendinitis, which is starting to heal, plus two torn ligaments, which need surgery. The waiting list for that is massive, so it may be months before it's sorted out. Which kind of sucks, but oh well. /whine whine whine)

I'm really really loving this idea, I LOVE birds! Still deciding on whether to sign up though since I'm in 1 swap now and have a baby coming next month, *but* I'm on maternity leave so I have plenty of crafting time.

I'll see how far I get into my swap this week before I sign up  ;D

This rule only applies to people in the US sending to other US participants. The dc rule does not apply to you. You will just need to keep your postal receipt as proof of sending.  :)

Hey ladies!

We don't have very many participants yet so if we don't have enough for groups, how would you feel aboutregular partners?

If that works out, then we can still make multiple birds but especially for our partner :)

Title: Re: Handcrafted Bird Swap -- Sign ups 3/9-3/22, Send out 4/22
Post by: greybird on March 16, 2009 01:27:35 PM
I think it would be a lot neater to get birds from as many different people as possible.  And get to experience as many different types/styles of birds that everyone will make.  I have been in many rounds of the Sweat shop swap and even when we've had a slow signup we still were able to swap with many partners.  The idea was the same.. you sign up to make 5 items or 10 items.

Let's say we only have 8 people total sign up.  What we did in the SSS was that people that asked for 5 got 5 and people that asked for 10 would get 7 because that was the max possible to receive if that was all that signed up.  I'm ok with only getting 7 birds.  :)  But I am really hoping to get a huge variety of birds, so I'd love one from everyone.  It could be done like this:

1. odd_artist - US - 10 birds
2. Avesthal - US - 10 birds
3. Catrinau - US - 10 birds
4. Rainbow_Storms - US - 5 birds
5. stargardener - 5 birds
6. atouchofyou - 5 birds
7. Jeane - 5 birds
8. dragonmama - 10 birds (I am guessing you'll pick 10..this is just an example anyway)

(name)  ---> (sends to these people)

odd_artist ---> avesthel, catrinau, rainbow_storms, stargardener, atouchofyou, jeanne, dragonmamma

Avesthel ---> odd_artist, catrinau, rainbow_storms, stargardener, atouchofyou, jeanne, dragonmamma

Catrinau ---> odd_artist, avesthel, rainbow_storms, stargardener, atouchofyou, jeanne, dragonmamma

dragonmama --->  odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, rainbow_storms, stargardener, atouchofyou, jeanne

Rainbow_storms ---->  odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, dragonmama, stargardener

stargardener ---> odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, dragonmama, atouchofyou

atouchofyou --->  odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, dragonmama, jeanne

jeanne ---->  odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, dragonmama, rainbow_storms

So the 10's send to everyone in the round.  Then the 5's send to all the 10s.  And any left over partner spots on the 5's would be randomly assigned their last partner (from the 5's).  So the 5's receive 5 birds and the 10's receive 7 birds.

Hope that makes sense.  :)

you are fantastic! thank you!

I only worry about international stuff and allergies. how is that handled in sweat shoppe?

Post by: greybird on March 16, 2009 01:42:48 PM
You're most welcome!  :)

You know, I'm not sure how Gatorwrangler handles the allergies.  The international though is not an issue, you just know that you might be sending to an international person when joining.  And a bird doesn't weigh much at all (unless you sculpt it out of metal) so it shouldn't cost that much more than shipping to a US person.  You could ask Gatorwrangler (she's the one that has been doing these sweat shop swaps for many rounds now) about the allergen issue.

Also as I was looking at that example I realized that it only works for 5 or fewer people signed up for 10 birds.  If you have 6 people sign up it would need to be done differently, but I know it can be worked out so it can work.  :)  In fact, I think I'll doodle on that idea and see what I come up with.

This rule only applies to people in the US sending to other US participants. The dc rule does not apply to you. You will just need to keep your postal receipt as proof of sending.  :)

I thought so but I just wanted to double check. :D Guess I need to work on my signup form!

Yeah, I'd also prefer to receive from several different people. I hope assigning partners/receivers/whatever doesn't turn out to be a complete nightmare. :P

Out of idle curiosity, is anyone else not from the US?

Also, is there a reason I'm not mentioned in the list on the first page?

Title: Re: Handcrafted Bird Swap -- Sign ups 3/9-3/22, Send out 4/22
Post by: greybird on March 16, 2009 02:19:43 PM
Just an example of 6 people signed up for 10 birds... when there are not enough swappers to equal 10.

1. odd_artist - US - 10 birds
2. Avesthal - US - 10 birds
3. Catrinau - US - 10 birds
4. Rainbow_Storms - US - 10 birds
5. stargardener - 10 birds
6. atouchofyou - 5 birds
7. Jeane - 5 birds
8. dragonmama - 10 birds (I am guessing you'll pick 10..this is just an example anyway)

(name)  ---> (sends to these people)

odd_artist ---> avesthel, catrinau, rainbow_storms, stargardener, dragonmamma, atouchofyou, jeanne

Avesthel ---> odd_artist, catrinau, rainbow_storms, stargardener, dragonmamma, atouchofyou, jeanne

Catrinau ---> odd_artist, avesthel, rainbow_storms, stargardener, dragonmamma, atouchofyou, rainbow_storms(2nd bird)

dragonmama --->  odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, rainbow_storms, stargardener, atouchofyou, avesthel(2nd bird)

Rainbow_storms ---->  odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, dragonmama, stargardener, jeanne, catrinau(2nd bird)

stargardener ---> odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, rainbow_storms, dragonmama, jeanne, dragonmama(2ndbird)

atouchofyou --->  odd_artist, avesthel, catrinau, jeanne, stargardener

jeanne ---->  rainbow_storms, stargardener, dragonmamma, atouchofyou, odd_artist

So in this case since there are 6 swappers sending 10 birds, the 10's would send to all the 10's at least 1 time.
Then the 10's each have 2 birds left to send out.  We'll get back to those 2 birds in a minute.

So now to make it as diverse as possible, assign the 5's to send to the 10's.  I am trying to make it as random as possible so I pick the first three 10's for atouchofyou and the second three 10's for jeanne.

Now each of the 5's have 2 birds left over to send out.

So then randomly assign these last birds to both the 10's and 5's.  To make this work you will have to let some of the people send 2 birds to the same person.  I would just spread this out so people can get as many unique birds as possible.

So again, in this case the 5's would send out 5 and get 5, and then 10's would send out 7 and get 7 back.  :)

If you assign partners this way and you need someone to help double check the sendout list before posting, I'd be glad to help as a second pair of eyes.

Why not just simplify -
If there are only 6 (or 8) of us signed up for 10 birds, why not just craft one of each of us. Unless someone has their heart set on more...

There are 5 more days of signups; I'm sure there will be more people signing up between now and then. I wouldn't sweat it now. :)

That's very true, this could all be a non-issue by the time signups close.  :)

I had that idea too, but didn't want to over commit those who were only wishing to do 5 birdies.

Anyway, it was just a suggestion from how this partnering has worked for us in the past for the sweat shop swaps.  :)

If we work it out where it is more of an average (8 people, 8 birds) then I can do that. I just don't want to over commit since I now have a full time job (well, contract, but still full time!!!) and I don't want anyone to be mad if it takes a few more days.

I am very excited to be a part of this swap :)!

(just got yelled at.....) and the bird is too!!

I like the idea of getting birds from many places...its one of the reasons I picked to be part of this swap.

If there was a need to send to 8 people (or even 10) I would do that too.  I picked 5 because I work FT too and don't want to over extend myself.  But I could make some sacrafice...frozen pizza and mac & cheese and lots of YoGabbaGabba...sorry kiddo, Mommy is crafting!  Actually she would love it, I am sure since I am a mean Mom and we are only allowed one TV show per day...I know so MEAN!

Oooooh this would be AWESOME!!

Must think about it because supplies are VERY limited where I live (backwater China) so I will need to do some digging about to see what I can get.

Will report back with my results.

I just thought of the most awesome thing to craft the birds out of. It's going to be a little unconventional, but it should be fun.

I have a little bird in Australia who lives with my parents. Some little critters for my new place here would be lovely.

I'm in!

love the thought of this swap - going to send in swap info in a bit

one small thing on international - you can't send real feathers to some places if one wanted to use them on their birds - Australian is very fussy.

and good thought!  about the feathers not being able to travel.  Thanks!

Sorry I'm behind on approving questionnaires folks! I've been trying to catch up on some other things :-/

But I did want to make a note that by signing up for this swap you MAY be sending internationally!

If you are going to send to one international partner, just make sure you aren't sending them that painted stone bird or something. ;)

If you would like to drop from the swap based on this new information, please let me know ASAP. I hope to finish processing questionnaires this evening.

Thank you all for joining!

This is great and I found out from a previous swap that the shipping wasn't as bad as I thought. It is good to know about what you shouldn't ship!! I didn't realize you couldn't ship feathers to Australia... oops!!   :o

I'm in China. The chances of me getting a domestic partner is very unlikely...

Can't wait to begin. I had a good explore downtown today... Found some interesting stuff.

Without too many details, I checked the box to say I would take any birdie.  How many chose that option?

And since  this is my first swap like this, I have a few questions.
How do you go about crafting for this?
Do you make the same type of bird for all that vary slightly?  Like a collection?
Do you make them speficically to each person?  Like one person in big in crochet and then another in fimo clay, and another done in embroidery?

Just wondering if I could get some tips...I am probably making too much of this!
I get swap anxiety so easily.
Thanks
peace
Theresa

I'll most likely make a series, with each of them slightly different to make it unique.

I will pay attention to my partners' likes and dislikes though, so I don't send a hot pink and orange bird to someone who only likes black & white.

I want to make fabric 3-D birds but waiting on fabric choices so I can make birds that fit with what my partners likes.
I do plan on making a few ahead of time so I can play with the pattern a bit.
this is the one I plan on using
http://nelliedurand.blogspot.com/2008/04/bird-tutorial.html
but I also saw a needlefelted bird with forks for feet that I would like to try and a needlefelted hummingbird that was beyond cool - so I may change my mind on the above <g>

I'm probably going to make my birds using a bunch of different techniques. I have a plastic bird ornament, the kind with a spring and a clip for feet, that I'm thinking of customising (re-painting, adding a better tail, that sort of thing), and I might needle-felt one, and knit a few, depending on what my partners like. :D

My name's still not on the participant list, even though I got the PM confirmation a few days ago. Might PM the organiser later, once I've done some more maths. *dead* (I have a hugely important test tomorrow. The 'if I bomb completely I probably won't get into university' kind of important. Had physics and Finnish last week. Dear god, the stress.)

I just discovered this swap and am sending in my info now!  ;D

It will be so much fun to receive a bunch of different birdies from all over the world!

I've been a bit leery of shipping internationally in past swaps, but think that since this is just one small item and not a box full of stuff, it shouldn't be too expensive.

Yay! The ideas are swimming (or should I say flying, ha!) around in my brain already!

dragonmama has not been online for a couple of days. I have sent her a pm. Hopefully everything's ok with her.

If she's not back by tomorrow or Thursday, I think the easiest thing to do is either have someone here take over this swap (questionnaires would have to be resent to the new organizer) OR, we could cancel this version and someone could totally start back over with new signups. If we have someone take this over, anyone already signed up would have the option of dropping the swap if they wish.

If anyone is interested in organizing if dragonmama does not return, please let me know. Hopefully dragonmama will be able to get back online before we have to worry about that, though. Thanks to everyone for being patient. I know I'm eager to get partners too!  :)

I'm afraid I'm going to have to bow out of this swap.
I'm having a run of bad luck and the final straw was my slip-and-fall at Michael's today. I'm so sore. I jammed my wrist, elbow and shoulder, bruised my hip, and tweaked my whole spine from neck to lower back and it's only going to get worse over the next few days. I'm going to have a hard time meeting commitments I already have, including the other swaps I'm already partnered for.
I hope there's another Bird Swap in the future, once the rest of my life settles down. Sorry. I just don't want to short-change my partners.

Welcome back.

I've started playing around with some patterns, but I'm still not thrilled with the results. I've been using felt as my "muslin", though, and my cats are totally thrilled with them.

This is the week of "Anything that can go wrong, will" :'(

I just got home to finish up partnering and my computer was frozen. I restarted and the damned thing didn't recover the document, even though it was saved AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH

Okay, so I need another hour and then I'll at least post who ya'll are sending too and then start sending out questionnaires.

I'm sorry folks. This swap is being an awful pain for being such a fun idea LOL

Life will do that to you.

Sometimes it just stinks. It happens. We would get snarky if you were just being a lazy flaky organiser, but you're doing your best. Don't stress and we will all look forward to seeing your partnering.

LORDY that was an undertaking LOL

Partners are listed on the third post of this thread!

I'll be sending out questionnaires in the morning; I'm just too beat to be sure I'll do it right lol

Basically, EVERYONE wants a random/creative bird! How fun!

So I hope that we at least make sure we don't send our partners things they'll hate, but otherwise, have fun with it! ^_^

Thank you all again for being SO very patient. :)

I'm starting to send out questionnaires, at last!

You'll notice that in most cases you are NOT sending to the same person you are receiving from. I did this primarily because it was easier lol... but also because pretty much everyone wanted a randomly, creatively designed bird and this seemed like the best way to accomplish that. :)

There is one important reminder I wanted to give:

Do NOT send to your partners UNTIL you see their name on the front page in green. When your birds are ready, then you will email a picture of all of them to [email protected]

Thanks you all again for joining! :D

Ah, one last thing.

Although everyone would like to receive things that are pretty random, I do hope that you will all respect what your partners do NOT want (i.e. colors, specific birds, etc)

Thanks again!

Please PM me if you have any questions!

I hope you all are satisfied with your partners; I tried to give a good mix. :)

If you notice any discrepencies between the list on the front page and the questionnaires you received, please let me know asap!

You will be pleased to know I have stopped taking the medicine. It was making me act like a zombie, and that isn't pretty.
The scary part is that I taught 6 hours of classes on  Monday and 4 hours yesterday... I have no idea WHAT I taught them, I hope it wasn't too off topic...

Thanks Dragonmama, I got the questionnaires. It seems I had them already, but somehow managed to miss them in my drug-induced haze...

I made a few more birdies yesterday while watching Twilight.  :)  I made up a test pattern too for one but it turned out too small when I sewed it up (only 3" tall) so I made the pieces bigger and re-did it and it was a much better size.  I get to keep the little one though since he's too small.  I think he's really cute though.  ;)

try paper shreds, I keep my scrap thread and fabric and stuff to stuff things I just can't bare to part with them and waste things.

My prototype turned out so good that I've gone ahead and started all of my birds doing the same steps. I'm about half way through the construction stage right now.

I've used wool scraps to stuff before and liked the way it turned out. Fabric scraps works too.

If you could buy an inexpensive pillow (or cushion), you could use the stuffing from it.  Or a stuffed toy that you can bear to tear apart.  I use everything from my fabric scraps to lint collected in the dryer lint trap when I've been drying towels and things that produce a lot of lint :)  But I'm trying to remember if my friend's dryer in Sweden had a lint trap, maybe that's just an American thing?

No clothes dryers here. It's more fashionable to hang your washing out in the street from the trees.  :o

Thanks for the stuffing ideas. I never even thought of buying a cheapo cushion or soft toy.

Craftsters save the day, again

I wasn't really happy with it anyway. So now he has a sea horse-ish looking thing to put on the Christmas tree this year.

There is no set medium for these birds. :)

They don't even have to be 3D!

The only requirements are:
-bird
-the size should be "palm" sized (4"x6" ish)

Happy swapping!

I just sent out for another swap yesterday, so I'll finally have some more time to devote myself to this swap!  I've been trolling everyone's blogs and wists.  Hopefully, I can come up with some great ideas!  Can't wait to see what everyone else has come up with!  :)

I really love working with fabric, but my supplies are very limited. I have plenty of pink things for another swap but many of my partners listed pink as something they don't like. At least one will be a stuffed bird, but I have found some quite awesome paper around. Once I get my hands on some glue (don't underestimate how hard it is to find glue that isn't that awful water stuff that wrinkles paper...) I might give papercraft birdies a go.

I found some funky little wood birdy cutouts at Michael's that I'm going to try out. But when I once a project, I rarely end up where I think I will.

After making my prototype and loving how it turned out, I've decided to go a different route for the rest of the birds. LOL  Last night I did a TON of cutting and started sewing. YAY! :)

One prototype completed and now making notes on tweaking the others to fit each recipient's likes and such. I would like to keep with the "sweat shoppe style" theme, but personalize each one in some way(s). Havin' fun with it so far though. This is way more fun than doing my income taxes. Pretty certain I'll have to file for an extension as I obsess over this proctrastination project. :)

I'm glad to read that some people aren't using fabric. I was toying with the idea of another medium as well :) Not sure yet though.

I crafted one of my birds today down by the river with some old ladies. They sit about sewing then stand up and do tai chi every so often. It was quite enjoyable. They also helped me craft, contributing to the bird. It's not 100% how I would have made it, but it is an interesting story and I hope its new owner (rainbow_storms) appreciates the hand some very old Chinese women had in making her bird!

I decided it was time to pack up and go when two naked men arrived to bathe in the river and slap their bellies.  :o

I was PMing this to Jeane and figured I had to share this bizarre craft story.

I'm busy finding alternatives to polyfill stuffing. I have a small wad but you can't really buy it here.

Any ideas for substitutes?

Confession: I kind of forgot about this swap. :D I haven't started, really, but I found a pattern and some yarn for one of my birds. I'm still not quite sure how I'm going to do the rest - I can only knit a few rows a day - but at least it's something. I have a few ideas for the others, too.

Now, back to trying to make sense of a med school textbook...

Edit: Bird #1 is done! I think it's supremely adorable, and I have a strange urge to name it, and write silly little stories about it.

I finished my second bird! They are turning out so super cute; I think I might just make them all out of paper. I'm worried about people feeling somewhat short-changed, though. It's just that my sewing skills leave a lot to be desired. I feel like it's equal because these little birds are actually kind of complicated, and I'm spending about the same amount of time on them as I would if I sewed them. I guess I'm just really nervous because I haven't really made things for other people before, much less strangers.

Papercraft, sewing or otherwise it's a piece of your creativity. Sometimes the simplest of designs take the most time. Don't stress, Im sure they will be great!

If anyone in the US is wondering about packaging their birds to mail out, maybe this will help: I went to the PO yesterday and picked up some small Priority mail boxes to send the birds in. They're the perfect size, and they're free. The postage is figured by weight, but my birds are pretty light, so I don't think it will be too much to send them all out. I looked all over my house for 5 small boxes and couldn't find enough, so this was a great solution. If your birds are flatter than my plump little beasts, the smallest size flat rate box might work for you. Neither of these boxes can be used for an international send, but if you ask, maybe they can help you with that as well. Luckily, I already had one perfect sized box here for my overseas birdie.  :)

I still have three to go. One will be a matter of a few hours. I have no idea about the rest - I might go all pretentious artist on one, and do the final one like the two I've finished already. It just takes all day to make one - I'm a ridiculously slow knitter. :P

I'm a little confused...should I be sending out already?  One other person and I in my group are green lit, but the rest aren't.  I thought we waited until our whole group was done?

I believe you can send to anyone in your group that is done already. Avesthel was only going to send to people in her group who were already green-lighted. I'll probably wait until my entire group is green, because I try not to go to the PO any more than necessary.  :D

I had a busy day getting ready for a dinner party (introducing the locals to the wonders of pizza and pasta) so I'm tired.

The great part is I have the whole of tomorrow off. No work or anything to do - just tidy the house a bit, take a nice long walk or bike ride and craft away.

Happy days.

I've got mine all boxed up and ready to go. Once the rest of my partners get greenlighted, I'm going to hit the PO.

I'm curious as to what happens if everyone isn't greenlighted by the 30th. Do we hold their package and mail to everyone else in our group?

In the sweat shop swap, that is how it is done.  And since you were green before the ship date then it doesn't count against you as being sent late.

I'm curious too if that is how we're doing it in this swap.  :)

Hopefully, we won't have to find out! I am working overtime this week to get my last three done on time. Luckily, my paper for this week was shortened so I won't be killing myself with work. Hurray!

On a side note, I'm unsure as to wether or not I'll be able to take pictures of my birds before I send them out/when I receive my birds. My boyfriend has the camera, but I don't know if I'll be able to see him and get pictures taken before it's send-out time.

I'm done with bird #3, and very nearly done with bird #4. I'm having a hard time with #5, but I think I've got it now. I wanted to finish the fourth and get started on the fifth today, but about halfway through, disaster struck. I ran out of glue! My crafting style is pretty much all glue and optimism, so that brought things to a grinding halt. I'll go buy more tomorrow, along with some packaging materials. (I should also clean and study, but whatever. :P )

Great job everyone! We have some more greenies so please check the front page to see who you can send to, if you've sent your picture to me. :)

Send outs tomorrow! If you think you're going to be late, please PM me and your downline as soon as you can.

Happy swapping!

I thought I was going to be able to finish everything last night, but it looks like I'm going to have to make the finishing touches on bird #5 after work tonight. I'll send over my pics as soon as possible this evening! Can't wait to see all the different birdies! :)

Soooooo, after getting 4 of my birds done and starting the fifth I decided that they were all just entirely too big, blech. I scrapped them, (actually set them aside for something else  ;)) and started fresh. I finished them all up last night and have just finished taking pictures which I'm going to send as soon as I'm done here. I'll get them all boxed up and ready to go and hopefully after checking green lit status will be able to get them all mailed out tomorrow. Yay!

I'm actually a little confused- do I need to wait for everyone I'm sending to to have a green light, or is it receiving from/ both? Hopefully everyone will have a green light by tomorrow morning, as that's the only chance I'll have tomorrow to go to the post office. If not, I'll just have to make another trip some other day soon.

I was wondering that myself.  There's only 2 green lights in my group so far.  I definitely won't be able to go to the post office more than once tomorrow.

I think the green light means that they've sent a picture of their finished birds to the organiser, and are ready to send. You are only supposed to send to green-lit participants. All of this probably helps cut down flaking. :) I suppose that if someone's not green by the time you're going to the post office, you're allowed to send theirs later?

I'm going to the post office in another hour or so. All of mine are either green or, judging by the posts here, finished, so I think I'll send all of mine out at once. The less time I have to spend at the post office, the better. (The staff are incredibly slow and terribly rude and snooty. :/ )

dragonmama, will you please post when you update this morning? I can only make one trip to the PO as well, and my group is not complete (although SarahBlais posted that she's ready; yay!)

Also, what DOES happen if someone in your group gets greenlighted later today after you've been to the PO once and/or it's after hours? I'd hate to get marked for sending late; my birds have been boxed up and ready to go for over a week.  :D

One person in my group hasn't been green lighted yet but I have to go out now, so I guess I am just going to send out my birds to those who are green. I hope I don't get marked as sending late for the final bird as it is all ready to go. :-\

I was planning on going to the post office on my lunch hour today. Hopefully, some more people in my group are green-light (including myself) before then!   ;D

And to answer rackycoo's question regarding feedback for sending late, I think I read somewhere on here that since you were green before the ship date then it doesn't count against you as being sent late...

I'm just concerned about the people who can only make one trip to the PO today. I need to go now, and can only send to three people in my group. I'm probably not going to be able to go again until tomorrow. If I get back home and new people are greenlighted this afternoon, technically I'm sending late if I don't send out to them today. I just want to make sure people aren't penalized in this situation.

Title: Re: Handmade Bird Swap, Sweat Shoppe Style! -- SEND OUT 4/30

It looks like I've got only one person in my group who's technically green-lighted (and that's rackycoo.)  But I've already e-mailed in my pic and from the posts here I think that Foxlet is ready to go also...

I was really hoping to get all the birds sent out all at once today. The post office can be such a pain! I'm not going to have time to go to the post office tomorrow, as I already have an appointment on my lunch hour, so the rest will have to wait until Saturday.

Hopefully, the other 3 will be green by then. Because I really don't want to have to make a third trip to the post office...  :-\

I hope that people aren't penalized too.  In the sweat shop swap, it was changed so that there were two dates, one for going green and one for shipping a couple days later.  So that this wouldn't be a problem for people sending on the last day (or not being able to) because their partners turned green on the last day.  Maybe we could do that here?  Make today the green light day and then have a 'send by' date of May 2?

How about jumping the gun a bit?...I mean, the others in my group have recently posted that they've finished and/or are awaiting dragonmama's green light. I'm thinking I'll just post them all today as I too only have time for one trip to the PO and unfortunately Saturday will not work for me. Sigh...the stresses we put on ourselves. :) This has been very fun though. I hope you all like your birdies!!!

I sent all of mine off this morning, even though two people in my group weren't technically green-lit, and one still isn't. I just kind of hate going to the post office. :P Now I just need to PM the organiser and my partners.

I can't wait to get my birds! They'll probably take a while, though. All of mine are going across the pond to America, so I guess that's a two, three week wait. They were sent priority, though.

I think it's impressive you've even got an idea of what it says!

I told schnerby this via pm, but I still think it's funny, so I'll share here. I sent 4 packages via Priority Mail here in the US, and then the one to her in China. I was amazed that her package was the cheapest to send!

Ditto that. the Priority Mail and even the one Parcel Post that I sent was individually more than the one Air Parcel package that I sent to Foxlet in Finland! Go figure. It will be interesting to see if she gets the package sooner than her US counterparts.  ??? Seems that a lot has changed (= gone up) in the US Post Office world. I guess I haven't been sending out packages lately. Today all the postage goes up again. We snuck in our packages on the last day before rates went up.  :P

Hooray! I sent!

I went to the bigger post office downtown because they tend to be less stupid. Apparently not today. 4/5 of my birds are 2D and would go easily in an envelope. China Post forbids anything but paper to ge in envelopes so simply said no. I then asked for them to be put in a package, they said ok and brought out boxes. The boxes were probably 15cm x 8cm x 6cm - for a small 2D bird! Partners, if one of you could please photograph your bird in the box and post a pic that would be great, particularly Jeane, Kungpow or Avesthel whose birds just look comical in the box.

Hello everyone! I haven't died, although I came close. I caught the (normal) flu about a week ago thanks to the pressure of finals and lots of crazy, cruddy weather in my neck of the woods. It's been a rough week and I wasn't able to do much of anything other than sleep and drink water. I've sent a message to dragonmama letting her know what's going on. I'm still not at full capacity, but I promise to send out my birds as soon as possible. Sorry for making life more difficult for my partners! Also, just a heads-up: I mentioned it before, but it was pretty easy to overlook. I don't have a digital camera, so if my partners could take pictures of birdies before sending to me, I'd appreciate it if it won't cause you more trouble. I have a phone camera, so it's not a huge deal; the image quality will just be lower. Again, sorry for holding things up and I will get the ball rolling at soon as possible.

I just walked in the door and found my bird from Catrinau. I'm getting pics of it now and will hopefully be posting shortly, if I can get some good ones in our dreary weather.

I've received 8 of 10 birds, but I guess one of my senders (mangomerle) is a flaker so I have only one more to receive (from atouchofyou).  This has been an awesome swap!!!

Received from:
1. catrinau
2. rainbow_storms
3. jrain
4. rackycoo
5. amaryllisroze
6. kungpow
7. vanyel
8. purlgurlknits

None of my birds have arrived at their new homes yet. The boxes are probably strapped to the back of a donkey somewhere on their way to my partners.

Sorry! Mail from me is always very slow.

Have had some difficulties getting online, but I'll be posting pics of the rest of my awesome birds very very soon!

Hey folks, I'm still alive. And I'm sorry for doing such a poor job with this swap. No excuses, it's just been a really hard few months.

Everyone has feedback now and I just need to sort out who has sent to/should have received from Mangomerle AND atouchofyou and then we'll get replacement birds sorted out.

Thank you all for participating. :)

I received my last birdie today so that makes me 10 out of 10 birds received!

And all my partners have received from me as well, so I am officially done with this swap.

Thanks to my partners for all the wonderful birds I received.  :)

While I was away for the weekend Ma Rut's bird arrived. Sadly, he sat in my boss's office until I came home today.

Pics super soon!

My bird from Schnerby arrived this weekend, and I love her! Now my full flock has arrived and I love them all!
I will have pictures of my latest one up in the next day or so!

OK, dragonmama has been MIA for quite some time, so I'm going to finish up this swap. Most people now have positive feedback, but I need your help on the following:

Schnerby --> Catrinau Jeane KungPow

Babbetto --> Schnerby lukenlarry Colorfuldayz mangomerle crafty gurll

mangomerle --> OhThat stargardener Schnerby Babbetto

I know that schnerby and babbetto have had more than that received, so if you are still listed and you have received from them, please let me know. Has anyone else received from mangomerle? If any of the three of you listed above has PMs from your partners saying they received, or if you can send me to a link where your partner posted, please do so and I will get your feedback updated asap.

Also, it appears that "a touch of you" has flaked, so if anyone would like to be an angel for her partners, that would be great. I would like for two people to angel. Each would send two birds, and FOC credit will be given.

a touch of you --> Catrinau OhThat stargardener KungPow

Thanks for everyone's help in getting this wrapped up quickly.

Seems like the organizer concluded that mangomerle flaked alltogether and was looking for angels? I was a sender to her but never sent since she dropped out of communication.

I know amaryllisroze received from mangomerle. I just don't know what else is going on with her. Did anyone else receive from mangomerle? :-\

It's been a while since dragonmama updated the record. That's why I will need everyone's help.

I was to send to mangomerle as well, but was instructed not to.  At one point we were going to be sending the birds we made for mangomerle to whoever was flaked on.  My bird is ready and I am waiting to hear what to do with it.

I'm hoping to hear from more of mangomerle's partners, as I know that at least one of her partners did receive. Please hold on and let's see if anyone else did. I may have all of mangomerle's partners go ahead and send to her.

I will still need angels for a touch of you's partners.

I've only received four. The one from Catrinau is probably just taking its time in the mail, though. :P

dragonmama gave positive feedback to several people before all their birds were received.   >:(

Is there anyone else who hasn't received, other than the list I have now posted at the top of the front page of this swap? If you haven't taken a moment to check that list for accuracy, PLEASE do so now. I know that some of those birds have been received by now.

I did have fun doing this kind of swap and can see how quickly it can get out of hand and a bit crazy, but overall I did have a positive experience....so I guess thats a BIG ol' THANKS to all my partners and all of the other fun peeps in the swap!!!

Hi!

Sorry I have been away. The Chinese gov decided we didn't need internet over that anniversary period. I also received from Mangomerle. I will get pics up now.

To the best of my knowledge I did receive all my birds and all my birds were also received.  I would be happy to angel for one or more people!

That means only one of mine is still in transit to it's new home

UPDATE by rackycoo:

These are birds that to my knowledge remain outstanding:

Schnerby --> Catrinau

mangomerle --> OhThat Babbetto

a touch of you --> Catrinau OhThat stargardener KungPow

Catrinau --> foxlet

I know that schnerby and babbetto have had more than that received, so if you are still listed and you have received from them, please let me know. Has anyone else received from mangomerle? Is there anybody that either has sent all their birds and needs feedback, or anyone that did not receive a bird and needs an angel? Please let me know via pm as soon as possible. I would really like to get this wrapped up now. It's gone on way too long.

Everyone now has feedback for this swap. An angel has been found for a touch of you's partners and will be sending soon.

I'm considering this swap closed and am moving it to the Swaps that are totally finished board. There were a couple of birds that are not accounted for, but the people that sent them had 4 out of 5 of their other birds received, so I have gone ahead and given them positive feedback. If you are one of the couple of people who did not receive a bird and wish to have me get an angel for you, please pm me asap.  (If you were supposed to receive from a touch of you, there is no need to send me a message as I already have an angel for you.)

I'm sorry that the swap ended up on such a sour note. It's always difficult to wrap up a swap when an organizer disappears leaving incomplete and inaccurate records.
