Title: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: psyche on March 07, 2009 12:58:50 PM
So I've seen this discussed in a couple of threads. Would anyone be interested in a Toronto Craftster meetup?

I'm actually from Hamilton, but Toronto is easy for me. . . and I think we have a pretty good following there!

(And any suggestions of where to go/what to do?)

ok lol I was actually going to start a thread like this myself.

Here, I thought perhaps an image would help to attract some form of attention :)

anywhos, I dunno where to meet...perhaps at a cafe? Or a lounge? Or hmmm...a patio somewhere when it's warmer?

as for things to do...we could always bring some crafts to do - or maybe have like a mini craft swap - kind of like the sweatshop swap type thing? My mind is currently scrambled 'cause of exams season D: so I can't think of too many things at the moment.

oh oh oh... I'm from Georgetown so Toronto is definitely doable for me.

I would love to do something like this.

open to many ideas.

Okay EKO, I was just about to post that I'd be interested but don't have access to a vehicle. I suppose, we could drive together? Since you live just down the street and all... :)

Hells yes Toronto craftster meet up!!  I'm in Toronto so I can easily meet anywhere.

There are a couple of great knit cafes that we could hit up/take over for the day, OR we could take over a regular cafe and make them deal with our craftiness.

I say we make it a bring what you're working on kinda day. I like those.

hahaha yes take overs are definitely awesome.

If we have a "working on" type day, i'm gonna have to pick between all of my WIP's XD (which is a lot D:)

I hear ya! I have a billion WIPS it seems. But it's always nice to have something to work on when I'm not feeling particularly inspired, but I still want to keep my hands busy.

Well, it looks like we have enough interest in this thing that we might actually be able to pull it off.

yep :) Now we'll just have to set a date and place ^^ (and of course, what to do exactly)

I'm in university so I have a pretty lenient schedule, although of course the best times are over the weekend. What about you guys?

This sounds like fun!  I'm in Toronto and can go anywhere the TTC goes, really. ^_^

I'm originally from Hamilton, so for those carless folks out there, there's the option of taking the Go bus or train.  I prefer the bus in non-rush hour situations since it's a direct route.  The train stops at a bunch of places in between, but is faster to take at rush hour than the bus.

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: CaterpillarPeacock on March 16, 2009 10:06:26 AM
yeah, I'm inbetween jobs right now so I have a pretty open schedule.

I say that we pick a cafe and have it there. There are so many really great ones in the city. OR there's the Knit cafe on Queen WEST, they have coffee and treats and tables to sit at, but it's not all that comfy there. But they have yarn and wool and other pretty things. Along the same lines there's the Purple Purl on Queen EAST, they have couches, but it's always kinda packed in there. I could maybe go and talk to the owners there though and perhaps they could suggest a time that's less busy.

I'm pretty excited about this actually. Any more suggestions, anyone?

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: ninjanator on March 16, 2009 02:46:05 PM
ah the knit cafe on queen west :) It's a cozy space but if we end up having more than say 5 people, it looks like it might be too many for the space in the back. However, like one of my friends said last time we went "I want to hug everything in here!" so there's always that XD

but I think a cafe would be the best option - 'cause there's always food around in case anyone gets hungry :P

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: CaterpillarPeacock on March 16, 2009 03:00:11 PM
Yeah, it's really cozy, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyhow. The Purple Purl has more space, but not by a lot. If we do go to a regular cafe though, my vote is for an independent, as we are craftsters and all. That and I don't do Starbucks coffee, it is disgusting. Queen East has like a billion and one cafes. Mercury Organic is awesome (and my favorite). But basically anywhere along there it's like every other store is a cafe. And there's new ones sprouting up all the time.

That sounds good :) there's also the option of going to this craft fair:

http://www.indiecraftshows.com/events.php?id=534

it's on april 2nd, but it starts at 8pm so that may be a little too late for some people (like me :P)

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!

I might be able to make that craft fair, I wont get my work schedual untill later next week.

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: psyche on March 20, 2009 08:12:56 AM
Hm.. that craft show would probably work for me, but a craft show is a tricky place to get to know someone. Perhaps we could meet up at a nice coffee shop on Queen W, sit and chill and craft, and then whoever wants to head to the craft show afterward can! It solves the later-night problem too. . . .

I'm still not entirely sure I can make it, but I usually can make Thursday nights (I work mostly weekends). Still waiting on my April schedule. But if I am definitely going, I'll be driving from Ancaster, so I'd be fine with carpooling with Hamilton folk! (Etc.) :)

Hello hello. I'm a Mississaugian but I work in Toronto and have a GO pass. I'm so up for this. I love the idea of working on projects in a cafe together. I'll have to find a project where I don't need my sewing machine though.

I work Monday-Friday 9-5, so weekends are really good. I'm not sure about that craft show. It sounds cool....but 8pm on a Thrusday......dunno....

Oh...and don't forget it's the bead show this weekend. I can't remeber where though......

Oh...and thanks Glojo for the pm. :P

We could always meet up the day of the craft fair and people who want to go later on can, and those who can't can go home :)

Hey kids!
I'm so excited that so many people want to meet! The Knit Cafe does some afternoon teas once a month. The next one is on the 5th of April. http://www.theknitcafetoronto.com/ I think that would a cool/mostly central and adorable thing to do!

I really really want to meet some more Toronto craftsters and get a semi-regular meet-up going.

I'm totally down with the knit cafe, it was my first suggestion after all. The afternoon tea would be pretty rad, but don't you have to sign up as they have very limited seating?

ohhh.
i'm so in!

anyone at OCAD or something? i bet you could easily reserve a room for a couple hours. then we could all go play in grange park or something.
*shrug*

i dont know where a good space would be otherwise, but it would be a LOT of fun for a meetup.

I still think that a cafe would be awesome.  Somewhere that has couches or something. There's my old place of work, the coffee tree, they'd totally let me get away with it. Only catch is that it's at Bloor and Jane, so west west end. Sigh.

Everyone keep posting ideas and we'll eventually come up with sometime/place that is awesome and works for as many people as possible

I may be interested in meeting as well - I am from Hamilton too as many others are (so if Toronto won't work for us) we could do our own meet in Hamilton somewhere. Getting to Toronto can be great or horrendous so it really will depend on what time and where we all meet. Somewhere central for everyone would be great!! and so fun!!

Ah in one of the college common rooms i frequent at uoft, there's these gigantic leather (i think) couches - when you sit on them, about 3/4 of your legs are on the actual couch - and I'm not that short either. I don't think they do reservations or w/e but I'm sure we can get away with hanging out there :P Although a cafe should work even better.

Maybe two or three of us can meet before the official "meetup" and scout for locations? 'Cause I know there's a lot of cafes on queen west and that general area, but I don't know which ones would be the best fit ):

I'm totally down with scouting locations, I have nothing but time right now. I'll take some time this weekend to pre-scout some places that look good and make a list that we can check out.

I am also down with scouting. There's a couple of sweet cafes in the bathurst college area. Or the Blue Moon Cafe (I THINK that's the name) in Kensington Market has a backroom with benches and tables that we could take over.
Also, CaterpillarPeacock, I'm an original Bloor West Villager! But I worked at the Starbucks at Runnymede, so the Coffee Tree is my natural enemy.

Maybe the Hamilton people should start a whole new thread for their meet up?? Just to make this one a little less confusing.

It's awesome that there are so many people in Hamilton that you can all do your very own meet up.

It wasn't till I moved to Toronto that I realized I had craftster peeps to meet up with :)

There's the Future Cafe on Bloor and Spadina(ish) It's large, no couches, but a big patio.

Futures could work, the only problem is that it's ALWAYS packed. I can't remember a time no matter the time of day or week that I have actually been able to get a table right away (unless by myself). But, it's true, if we went in a few months when the weather is better the patio would be a good option. Or there's the green room around the corner as well. They have couches and it's virtually dead in there during the daytime.

Hello fellow Torontonian (and Hamiltonian?) Craftsters. I'd be up for a meet up sometime. I really really like the idea of a mini swap. Perhaps everyone brings a 1-2 point swap item (wrapped?) and we do a little gift exchange?

I work 9-5, but Moonbean would work for me as I work right near there.

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!

I've never been but I've heard of Moonbeam, I vote that, nice and easy to get to. I am way more open in the early noon since I work and have class in the eve'. But I guess some of us do the 9-5. Maybe a Saturday or Sunday afternoon? :: grin ::  Doyoulove...I like the gift/swap idea.

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: CaterpillarPeacock on March 25, 2009 09:49:05 AM
Oooo Lucky you! We could always do it up at the beginning of May when people are really done with school and it's a wee bit warmer.

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: k-roc on March 25, 2009 10:16:09 AM
I'd be up for the beginning of May too, as school will be finally finished for me. Moonbean has front and back patios too so when it's warmer... yay!

If we are going to do a mini-swap I have several suggestions:

1) We could make it generally craft-themed so that we can just give them to anyone. Like a tea-towel with "make stuff not war" or something like that. Everyone makes one or two 1-2 point items and give away the love.

2) OR when we decide on the date, we can start a separate thread, get peeps to sign up, and then pair everyone off. I still think it should be craft-themed (to celebrate!) so that we can pair knitters with knitters etc., I would be happy to volunteer to do this.

Either way I think we should start a separate thread so that it is clear when and where we are meeting for anyone who hasn't found this thread yet, and to get a general idea of numbers in case we need to call the location ahead of time.

And Hamilton peeps, I hope you still come down! Everyone in the GTA and beyond should come!

P.S. Hi Fantasticmio! I wanted to PM you about this, so I'm glad you found this thread!

Post by: CaterpillarPeacock on March 25, 2009 10:23:23 AM
k-roc you have a lot of great ideas. I like the swap idea too. I like the idea of just making some random stuff, wrapping it and bringing it along. Randomness is key :)

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: fantasticmio on March 25, 2009 10:40:18 AM
I'd be up for bringing something small for a general swap/gift thing.  I think that'd be neat ^_^

k-roc: I'm glad you thought of me!  I don't normally check this board, and I'm not sure what possessed me to this time, either. lol

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: doyouloveanapple on March 25, 2009 11:51:34 AM
I like the random idea too... just so no one is disapointed incase their partner doesn't show up.

Yes, once we decide we should start a new thread.

How about we say May 3rd (sunday?) Moonbean cafe, in the afternoon sometime, 3PM?

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: fantasticmio on March 25, 2009 11:53:59 AM

Title: Re: Potential Craftster Meetup in Toronto!
Post by: psyche on March 25, 2009 11:55:02 AM
Oh yeah, I am still into this idea, despite being from the Hamilton gang! (Though weekends are always tricky for me since I'm a "relief worker" and tend to work lots of them.) May does sound lovely. And I really like the idea of that "small, random, wrapped craft-themed craft that might suit anybody" (rather than an organized thing. ..  .)

Alright, how about May 2nd then? I like the late-ish afternoon time; 2 or 3 is great. Once we decide on a date I'll start the new thread and get everyone to sign up to make sure everyone gets a little gift.
