Title: Daydreaming Mermaid Quilt (now with process pics on page 8)
Post by: patchyemm on February 27, 2009 03:26:35 PM
Hello,

I made this quilt for a competition we have in New Zealand called the Hoffman Challenge - I think there´s a similar one in the US.  The rules are that you have to use a ´recognisable amount´of the selected Hoffman fabric (this year it was the one I used in the mermaid's tail), the quilt must be under 1m square in size and it must not be square or rectangular.

Detail of tail

Hand detail

I started doing patchwork a couple of years ago after being really inspired by the picture quilts I saw in a local exhibition.  So I wanted to try a picture quilt and I wanted to try creating a human figure using shading - I've been very interested in this.  So when I saw this year's Hoffman fabric it immediately suggested to me a mermaid tail and I thought this was a great opportunity to try those things out.

I machine pieced the sea with 1 inch squares, paper pieced the rock and then slip-stitched that to the sea, created the mermaid using fusible-web applique (product called Vilesofix in NZ), machine-stitched her to the background using a close zig-zag, used a whole piece of fabric for the sky and needle-turned the hills.  Then it was machine-quilted.  This was my first time quilting and while I'm in love with patchwork I'll say that I didn't hugely enjoy the quilting.  I think that was just cos it was my first time though.  Also, I do think the quilt might have looked better if I hadn't quilted it so densely, but I guess that's all part of the learning curve.  Hopefully quilting will become more enjoyable!  Putting together all the little pieces for the mermaid's skin was easier than I thought it would be - courtesy of patience and a pair of tweezers!

I'm definitely keen to do another portrait type quilt - not sure what the subject will be but I loved figuring out the shading for the body and seeing that come to life.  I didn't sketch the figure by the way - I'm okay at sketching but not that good.  My very kind and patient husband  ;) took some photos of me and I traced one.

Comments and criticism are greatly appreciated  :)

I have to agree with everyone so far.  This is an amazing piece of work.  Just beautiful.  I love that it is round!  I don't think the quilting is too dense at all.  I can't really describe how beautiful I think it is.

I rocked this.

how long did this lovely quilt take!?

Thanks again for all the wonderful encouragement - Craftster people are amazing  ;D

I don't have much idea how long it took - I'd say minimum 50 hours, maybe 100? Maybe more? but I really don't know.  Just doing the binding and making the label would've been about 8 hours!

Here are a few process shots so you can see how I put it together.  Hopefully this is interesting or helpful to someone!  :)

Here's the sea - pieced of 1" squares.  The big chunk of calico is where the rock is going to be and I did that to save myself a lot of time and effort, and also to save on fabric.

So I paper-pieced the rock, that's where you cut all your shapes out of paper, tack the fabric onto them, then sew all the pieces together by hand, and when you've finished you take the paper out.

This is the first part of the body being assembled - note the tweezers  :)  These were ironed onto a calico back ground using fusible web because I was too scared to put them directly onto the rock in case I made a mistake.  I put down the darkest areas of the body first and every piece slightly underlapped the piece that went on top.

Deciding what colour fabric to use for the lightest areas on her back...

All finished.  So then I carefully cut around her and tacked her to the background and then did a narrow zig-zag to attach her.  I also zig-zagged around all the individual pieces to hold them and prevent frayed edges.

Thanks so much for all the lovely comments.  I'm really glad to hear it's inspired other people to have a go at picture quilts.  I got turned on to quilting when a saw a local exhibition here a couple of years ago and got really interested in picture quilts by just browsing on the net.  Definitely give it a go!

Well, the results of the competition are announced at Easter and I'm trying not to focus on that too much.  I'm passionate about sewing and I don't want it to get tainted - you know, I worry about my motives becoming less than pure  :)  I'm sure that'll make sense to some of you.  So I thought the competition was great to do because it was a good excuse to try a picture quilt and it gave me a deadline to work to.  But I want to keep in mind that I can only aim to fulfil my ideal of beauty - it doesn't matter if no-one else likes it as long as I feel I've done the best that I can.  ;D  Happy crafting!

Ooh, sorry I hadn't posted a comment earlier about how it did in that comp (in case anyone is still interested...  :) )  It didn't even get selected to travel around the country (18 out of the 40 quilts submitted got to travel), which I was REALLY disappointed about.  The feedback from the judges was very brief but they did say that they thought the rocks gave rather hard lines.  I do think I could've done a better job on assembling and quilting the rocks but I didn't allow myself enough time really.  And I don't think they detract from the overall effect.  Ah well, each to their own.  Anyway, she's up on my wall in my sewing room and I'm really enjoying looking at her - which has got to be the point eh? :-)

What a bummer! I am just in love with this quilt! And, hard lines from the rocks? Well, duh! Seems like the perfect effect you'd like a rock to have, especially on a soft thing like a quilt. I think it just emphasizes the curves of the mermaid and the flow of the water.

Very beautiful! I don't understand how anyone would ever reject it. On the plus side, you get to see it every day. :)

I don't have a book to recommend, but it's really just applique - check out the pics on page 8, but do contact me if you'd like more detail or a better description.  I do have more pictures I could post of the original sketches and pattern pieces.  And what I'd also recommend is just having a go!  Best of luck, I bet you'll amaze yourself  :)

Amazing quilt! I can't believe the detail you've put into it. Most people can't even paint or draw hands, let alone create them with fabric! Very impressive!
