Q: How long have you been crafting?  Why did you start?
For as long as I can remember Iíve been drawing, painting and making stuff. As a kid I drew on walls, after that I studied fine art at a crazy school, then I went to college and became graphic designer. Iím grateful that I make a living in a creative field but making for other people is far different than making for yourself. When my son was born I realized that there was another life outside of work. There were hours upon hours in my day that were mine all mine! And so, I started making for myself all over again.
And this is me...

Q: What kinds of media do you like to use?

I dabble in everything. Right now Iím doing a lot of collage and painting. Iím trying my hand at knitting and crochet, which Iím terrible at, but itís fun. I also particularly like sewing, baking, and small sculpture.

Q: What inspires you?

Hmmm, books, music, television, movies, pop culture, colour, history, folklore, architecture, trips to the fabric store, nature, dreams, toys, strangers on the bus, other peoples crafty works, my husband, my kiddoÖ I could go on and on. Inspiration pops up all over the place, itís just a matter of noticing and applying it.

This is what's on my 'idea' board' at the mo' (including a sketch for my maybe entry into next months challenge)...

Q: Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?

My philosophy is to create with positive, passionate abandon.

There was a time I would spend hours painting a leaf. That leaf would be mighty impressive and look pretty damn good, but it didnít have a soul. Now, I take any idea that pops into my head, or that Iíve jotted down, and I run with it. So what if itís weird or dorky? If you have a genuine interest in what youíre making other people will respond to that. Feel the need to make a giant toadstool? Go ahead! I bet there are loads of people whoíd love it.

Why I cover my table in kraft paper..

Q: Besides the Misc. Topics board, where else on craftster can people find your work?

Iíve got a number of things posted on the More Art, Less Craft board as well as the Swap Gallery.

This is something I'm currently working on...

Q: What is your favorite creation you've posted on craftster?

I think Iíd have to cheat a little and say the photoís taken by my son.
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=262055.msg2938401#msg2938401
He took the photos and I applied a filter and adjusted them a wee bit. Heís a little sports nut so it was great to do something creative with him.

One of my paintings sitting on my bathroom shrlf...

Q: What is your favorite thing that someone else has posted?

Every day I come here I see something that I fall head over heels for. There is so much talent and total brilliance in this community. If I had to pick just one thing Iíd say the beaded bowling pin. https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=145530.0 It was one of the very first things I saw on craftster and I literally spent a over year looking for a bowling pin so I could do this craft myself.

Thanks so much, Knickertwist!  We love seeing all the wonderful things you come up with!!

What a fun interview, superhooker, and what a great choice of people to interview! I loved getting a little inside look at knickertwist's studio and WIPs. I have been a member of the knickertwist fan club for quite some time now. She's amazing!

Cool interview! I'm a fan of knickertwist's, so it's cool to kind of see the behind-the-scenes process. :)

And I love to see other artist's idea boards. I have an inspiration tree (it's a metal tree I got from Pier 1 that I think is supposed to be used to hold photos) on the wall over my desk that I use to hold other people's artwork and some other inspirational items. Knickertwist's, however, is much more organized than mine. ;D

This is an excellent idea for an article.  Knickertwist, may I ask how does one setup an idea board?  I mean, the things you have on your board, why did you put them there (do you just see something that interests you and up it goes, or what)?  The reason I'm asking is that most of the time my daughter mopes around complaining that she has "artist's block" and asks for us for ideas on what she can draw.  Then when I make suggestions she's like, "Naa, I'm not in the mood for *insert any subject here: birds, mountains, sunsets, etc.*  Or, in my words, "I'm too lazy to do an interpretation on what I think a phoenix bird would look like."  That sort of thing.  So, in the end, she mopes and mopes and nothing is ever done.  So, I'd like to get her to create her own idea board and am wondering how one gets started doing it.

That particular 'idea board' was quite clean. I just stick anything on it that grabs my attention. Pages from books, colours I like, techniques I think look cool. A much bigger help, for me anyway, is an idea journal. I usually have a notebook in my purse and jot down things while I'm on the bus or waiting for lunch to arrive. I stick things I find in it... letters, cards, other papery things on the street. I also find I remember things much more clearly just from writing them down, plus ideas seem to develop and grow better when there is a place to jot them down.

Title: Quarterly Featured Artist (april/may/june)
Post by: SevsOnlyGirl on June 16, 2010 08:33:43 AM
I wanted to revive the Misc. Board Featured Artist feature and thought what better way to begin than with jennieingram!  Jennie is all over Craftster and posts quite frequently on the Misc. Board, I'm sure you've seen her posts. :)  I had the chance to interview jennieingram and here's what she has to say about crafting:

How long have you been crafting?  What's the first thing you remember crafting?
I have been crafting as long as I can remember.  My mom was a very active person, who always had several projects going, whether it was renovating a Colonial house, or teaching herself to quilt, all while running a day care with lots of extra children in the house.  Growing up she would give me bits of paper, boxes of colored pencils, scraps of fabric, buttons, glue and scissors, and tell me to ďgo make somethingĒ with them.  When I was eight or nine she took up quilting, and bought a new sewing machine.  She gave me her old one and I remember making small quilts, potholders, placemats, and costumes with that machine for years.  When we would be out somewhere shopping and I would see something I liked, she would tell me ďYou could make thatÖ.  Actually, you could make a BETTER one than that.Ē  We would go find the supplies, and experiment until we did in fact make a better version of whatever I had seen.  It seemed that when birthdays and Christmas rolled around as a kid, I always received craft kits, or art supplies.  I liked the craft kits, but would usually end up just scavenging them for parts for some other craft I had dreamed up.

The first thing I distinctly remember crafting were a set of Lacing Cards for my favorite aunt who was pregnant with twin girls when I was 4 years old.  Someone had given me a My Little Pony lacing card set (one of those kits where you run the yarn through the pre-punched holes in the cardboard, outlining whatever the image was) and I remember picking out my two favorite colors of yarn from the kit and working on them on the porch with my aunt while she rested her swollen ankles.  Even as a kid and a teenager, I never bought presents for people, I always made them.

You work in so many different medias, what's your favorite?

I donít have an overall favorite, I just go through crafting phases.  For a month Iíll do nothing but jewelry, then the following month Iíll be all about quilting.  The only constant seems to be that I donít usually do at home, the same craft Iím doing at work.  I work as a costume designer and costume technician, which requires me to do a lot of sewing, but also a lot of unusual crafting, like dyeing, leather working, plaster casting, mask making.

If I had to give you my top few crafts though, it would be jewelry making, quilting, cooking, and coming up with really random items like my Harry Potter Crafting & Sewing Magical Emergency Kit (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=343356.0).  I like really intricate things, that have lots of little parts and pieces to make match a theme.

What inspires you?

I get inspired by the beautiful things I see here on Craftster every day.  I tend to browse the boards a few times a day, and bookmark my favorite items.  I also am inspired by my friends who come over to craft with me on the weekends, and my swap partners.  When I really want to get the creative juices flowing, I stalk a swap partner, or go through a favorite crafterís profile or wist.  I always love seeing anything new posted by Phizzychick, pinkleo, Knickertwist, and FoxyBlue, just to name a few.

Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?
Surround yourself with things that make you smile, and put all your heart into a project.  It will always show when you do.

What other boards can Craftster members find your work?

You can mostly find me on the Quilting, Jewelry, and Cooking boards, as well as in the land of Craft Swaps.
Strawberry Filled Vampire Cupcakes (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=349824.0)

Charm and Cluster Bracelets (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=333183.0)

Tree of Life Wall Quilt (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=332525.0)

What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?

I have two favorites.  The first is The Potions Master Charm Bracelet that I made for SevsOnlyGirl in the Loaded Charm Bracelet Swap (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=332748.0).  I loved getting to go to so much detail in the project, and that it allowed me to push myself outside of my normal crafting comfort zones.  I tend to make lots of very orderly bracelets, with equally sized charms.  In that one I just let my imagination carry me away.

The second one is my Once and Future Valentine Shrine (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=336172.0) for my husband, James.  Heís very supportive of my crazy crafting endeavors, and of my unusual career choice, which keeps me busy long after normal peopleís quitting times.  Heís picked up and moved across the country for me twice now, and though I tell him all the time that I love him, I made me so happy to make something something so personal just for him.

What's your favorite thing on Craftster created by someone else?

The Scrappy Squares quilt by KatherineEmma (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=197185.0) & The Guild of Fairy Godmotherís Book by Knickertwist
(https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=295348.0)

I hope you've all enjoyed a peek into the world of jennieingram!

Title: Quarterly Featured Artist: sheepBlue! (July/Aug/Sept)
Post by: SevsOnlyGirl on September 20, 2010 09:53:53 AM
This Quarter's Featured Artist is sheepBlue!  sheepBlue posts all over Craftster and does a lovely job in everything!

How long have you been crafting?  What's the first thing you remember crafting?

Iíve been crafting for as long as I can remember. Both my parents are very creative and raised me to want to find my creative outlets as well. Trying to remember back to the first thing I made, the thing that sticks out is a ceramic bird I made in preschool or kindergarten. It was glazed a beautiful deep blue and I was so proud of it; I think now it sits on my dadís computer desk somewhere in pieces. Over the years appendages slowly fell off, but somehow never got lost.

What's your favorite media?

Its so hard to just pick one because I find inspiration in so many different crafts and materials. That being said, I will forever love sculpture and anything that has elements of texture in them, especially if theyíre made from recycled or unconventional materials; I am such a tactile girl, I always have my hands all over anything with an interesting texture because it brings another level of connection to a piece of art that really engages your senses in an instinctual kind of way. Lately, I have been playing a lot with textural types of art built off of canvases using polymer clay layered over armatures (most of the time foil) and then painted or layered with papers and other crazy things. I love mixing materials because the textural aspect tends to grow from that.

https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=359393.0  Whimsy Bird Assembly

What inspires you?

Oh god, everything, especially anything quirky and unusual. I find that a lot of my work draws inspiration from the people and art around me because I fall so in love with it I want to try and emulate it with my own personal style, and slowly as I work on a project or several in a series it evolves into its own unique thing.

Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?

I donít intentionally have one, though I suppose if I did it would be to try and experiment with everything, and to not be discouraged if a project doesnít go the way you wanted it to. I have made plenty of things that I didnít deem worthy of posting on craftster just because they were pretty bad, but after trying again and again to create the vision in my head I can usually get closer to my goal and learn a lot in the mean time.

On what other boards can Craftster members find your work posted?
I post a lot on the Needlework and Papercrafting boards as well as sometimes on the More Art, Less Craft board.

More Art, Less Craft - I love triptychs!

Papercrafts - Awesome Altered Puzzle!

Needlecrafts - I love felt!

What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?

If I had to pick one Iíd say my Day of the Dead canvas is one of my favorites. I rarely remake something because I get bored after the first time wanting to move onto a different project, but I loved this so much I had to make another for myself. It was made with acrylic paint, puffy paint, glitter glue and sculpey clay for the skull piece. The texture of all the lines framing the skull are fantastic though and I love touching it a lot.

https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=319302.msg3678318#msg3678318

What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?

You are killing me, how can I choose? Lately I have been completely lusting after FoxyBlueís artwork because it so beautifully detailed and textural!!! Love it! This piece in particular is my favorite.

Title: Featured Artist - 4th Quarter 2010 (Oct/Nov/Dec)
Post by: SevsOnlyGirl on January 26, 2011 07:49:12 AM
Our Featured Artist for the Fourth Quarter of 2010 is teag!

1 - How long have you been crafting?  What's the first thing you remember crafting?

I don't ever remember not crafting, my first crafting memory is at age four sitting in my grandfather's lazy boy - making a leopard print dog- ashtray holder that sat on the armchair- it was made from an old coat of my grandmother's, a tuna can and beans for stuffing-

2 - What's your favorite media?

hmm that's a tough question. Fabric, polymer clay, reclaimed materials, paints, beads-many of my projects include multiple medias-so I don't think I really have a favorite media-when I am inspired to create something I use whatever it will take to reach my vision for that project-

3 - What inspires you?

My fellow craftsters for one,  provide some of the greatest inspiration there is - and Swaps helped me to come up with some of my favorite craft projects -my polymer clay potion jars were inspired by a swap -almost anything I read, see or hear inspires me- I see creative possibilities everywhere.

4 - Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?

I don't really have a crafty/creative philosophy, being creative is a way of life for me, it's almost as necessary as breathing- sure I can live without crafting but whenever I take a break from crafting  I feel as if something in my life is missing - crafting, for me  makes sense in my life and keeps me sane

5 - On what other boards can Craftster members find your work posted?

Besides Miscellaneous Topics,I can be found on the polymer clay, Jewelry and Trinkets, Toys, Dolls and Playthings, Occasions and Holidays, Purses, Bags and Wallets and especially the swap boards.

6 - What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?

My teacup sewing organizer- it took me a long time to work out the details, draft the pattern, and get the construction right - in the end it was so worth it

7 - What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?

Wow that is a tough one-I don't think I can choose just one project - anything made by:
SpookyPooky, loveandasandwich, cackle, rackycoo, Phizzychick, Audio, edelC, ghilie, lovesclutter are always my favorites.

Post by: SevsOnlyGirl on April 04, 2011 04:09:29 PM
1 - How long have you been crafting?  What's the first thing you remember crafting?

I have been crafting all my life! My dad is an artist and my mother has been working in elementary education my entire life, so I have been surrounded by creativity since I can remember. When I was 4 years old, I wanted to paint our house like a Dalmatian dog because I was obsessed with the movie 101 Dalmatians. Obviously, I didn't get to do that, but I do remember drawing and cutting out all my own paper dolls and outfits when I was that age. I also would make animals from paper, milk and soda bottle caps, pompoms and googly eyes using the caps as the body bases and adding pompom heads and paper arms and legs. My entire childhood was spent making and crafting my own toys from things I found around the house.

2 - What's your favorite media?

Good question! I am really fickle about that sort of thing- I go through phases of certain types of projects and medias and at that moment, it is my favorite thing in the world and I produce a ton of those projects. Then I get bored and try something new and it becomes my favorite! It started with acrylic paintings, then paper and drawing collages, then graphic design, then mixed media projects like my Pumpkin Head Dolls and Curio Cabinets and other things, and now it seems to be plushes. Right now, it is definitely plushes still.

3 - What inspires you?

Oh, so many things inspire me! First off, my family and husband are my biggest inspirations. They support and encourage me everyday, and they embrace my weirdness.  Cheesy Also, there are three men who are my absolute heroes in life and have taken a great part in shaping my personality. It is no secret that I am obsessed with the singer Meat Loaf. I love his passion and devotion to his music and life and I hope that someday I can touch people and inspire them with my own passion and art in the same way he has inspired me. Walt Disney is also at the top of my list as one of the most amazing people in the world. He was one man who had the courage to create possibly the biggest empire in the world, and everything Disney alike inspires me: Walt, the movies, the park, the toys- all of it! Last on my list, and probably obviously, Tim Burton has influenced both my art and personality greatly. I love everything that is a little macabre and slightly odd and again, his passion is just extraordinary. I even get emotional when I talk about any one of these three men. Finally, Craftster serves as a huge source of inspiration for us all. I see new, amazing projects that make me want to try my own hand at them, I have so many craftster crushes and members that put me in awe, and when I post my own projects and get such positive feedback, I feel encouraged to continue on. This is such an amazing website!

4 - Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?

My philosophy goes right back to the three men I mentioned above. It takes courage to be an artist. You have to be willing to try new things and  never give up on anything. When I first joined craftster, I never thought I would be able to move beyond acrylic paintings, but now I do all sorts of projects because I just jumped right in. Sometime I failed at projects, but I kept working on them until I figured it out. And in all honestly, sometimes being artsy and creative will lead you to not fitting in and being an outcast. Meat Loaf and Tim Burton certainly fit that bill, and Walt Disney was shunned many time is his life and laughed at for what he believed in. However, in the end, those are the things that will make you stand out the most in life and bring you success. With imagination, you can redefine and change the world.

5 - On what other boards can Craftster members find your work posted?

Let's see, you can find me on:

Miscellaneous Topics
Toys, Dolls and Playthings
More Art, Less Craft
Occasions and Holidays: Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Weddings
Sewing in General
Home Sweet Home
Paper Crafts, Scrapbooking and ATCs

-I think that is it! Expect to see me in the clothing boards soon, because I just started sewing and reconstructing clothes and I started photography too recently, so I hope to post some of my pictures on the art board.   ;D

6 - What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?

That is tough! I love the first Bigfoot Curio I posted, along with the first Steampunk Pumpkin Head I ever made sooo much! And my Ganesha plush is probably my favorite plush I have ever done (for the moment). However, I definitely think my wedding is my favorite creation ever though, since it includes many different projects by me along with many projects from other Craftster members. It was more like a production starring all the projects.   ;)

7 - What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?

Again, these are so hard to answer! I own a large amigurumi doll of Meat Loaf that was created by amydice just for me that I completely love. I love all her projects, actually. The same goes for lanikins, and the Cheshire Cat plush she made me is another one of my favorite items. There are too many to choose from! But I always really enjoy seeing anything posted by gotgrey, lumpybits, noooitaremybirthday, any poppets, and anything with a yeti.  ;D

Title: Quarterly Featured Artist: erica_tattoos!
Post by: LimeRiot on July 06, 2011 10:01:42 AM
Congratulations to this summer's featured artist, erica_tattoos!!

erica_tattoos is a sweet and supportive part of the Craftster community and also INSANELY talented! She's blown us away with creative projects like her Whimsy House (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=365091), Day of the Dead/Rockabilly Holy Family (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=378727) and even the painting she did on a taxidermy fish (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=365092)!

We're thrilled to recognize her and hear what she has to say about her creative process and inspirations.

1 - How long have you been crafting?  What's the first thing you remember crafting?
well - that's kindof a tricky question.... i don't ever really remember NOT crafting! pretty much ever since i can remember i've been getting into my mom's sewing supplies and making art supplies out of things that - technically - weren't!   i remember i used to "modify" my barbies when i was a kid - and my clothes..... i was probably something of a terror to my folks on their limited budget at the time!

2 - What's your favorite media?
mixed! my favorite thing to do is find some interesting cast-away thing and modify it with acrylic paint and hot-glue and whatever else the item itself seems to call for... i think i've always found a big blank canvas kindof intimidating. It's always been more fun for me to find something that's already got its' own life and personality and then find some way to draw that out or dress it up...

3 - What inspires you?
ohhh... every day life?   i'm a tattoo artist, so i get a lot of my ideas from there.... i also like mexican folk art/day of the dead imagery, catholic iconography, and all kinds of art and architecture from foreign cultures.... and i loooove bright colors and fun, whimsical themes...

4 - Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?
haha.... um, probably "anything goes?"  maybe i've got a short attention span, but i don't like to do any one thing too much, i get bored. so i'd just say keep trying new things, and keep challenging yourself to do something different, or do something you've done a thousand times before in a totally different way.... most of my favorite things i've created, both crafts and tattoos, are the things that had me farthest from my comfort zone while i was working on them.... but doing that gets you thinking in all new ways, and there's no telling where that can lead you!

5 - On what other boards can Craftster members find your work posted?
hmmmm...... well, most of them do end up on the miscellaneous boards, but i think i've posted in needlework, toys n playthings, more art less craft, jewelry n trinkets, quilting, image reproduction, occasions n holidays.....  i told you i'm all over the place!!! probably just one or two things in each of those.... =)

6 - What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?
it's hard to choose - i think i love everything for a different reason! how bout my two favorites?   one of my favorites is the mini art quilt i made for retro_rose in the maq4 swap:
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=378621.msg4473949#msg4473949
and one of my other favorites is my whimsy house...
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=365091.msg4288555#msg4288555

7 - What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?
man, there's so much stuff on here i just absolutely adore it's impossible to narrow it down.... so i'll just go with the first thing to pop into my head...
and that is any one of the multiple AMAZING teesha moore-inspired bags by the totally awesome sheepBlue. here's one of them...

Title: Quarterly Featured Artist: cackle!!
Post by: LimeRiot on October 23, 2011 03:10:41 PM
Weíre so happy to feature cackle as our Miscellaneous board featured artist this quarter! From decorating gingerbread (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=365869.msg4300187#msg4300187) to sculpting clay pumpkins (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=391185.msg4633133#msg4633133), her work is an inspiration!

Check out what she had to stay about her crafting process!

How long have you been crafting?  What's the first thing you remember crafting?

Hooboy, that's thinking back a way. I can't remember when I wasn't making something. I specifically remember this big paper mache pumpkin I made out of orange construction paper and wallpaper paste in the third grade. I thought I was Picasso. Todd Pearson dropped kicked it off the school bus on the way home. You there, Todd? I know where you live, buddy.

What's your favorite media?
I go through phases with stuff, but there is always acrylic paint in there somewhere. I always go back to the paint. At the mo, I love polymer clay, it's anything you want it to be. And you can paint it!  And I love paper. Loooove paper. And metal. And sparkly bits. And stuff.....the fascinating bits and pieces that you hold on to for yonks because you know someday you will have the perfect thing to put it on.
And I love tools. It's incredibly fun to play with tools. And good tools let you get on with things.

What inspires you?
Um, I'm sort of a sensory junky, so just about anything. And I go through phases with that too. Buildings, insects, plants, water, music, texture, sculpture, paintings, stories. On and on....Recently, I found an old book on Goudy and so I'm revisiting my typeface obsession.
A little house with some kind of lettering on it may turn up here sometime.

Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?
If you are longing to do something, find a way to learn the skills and do it. And be persistent.

On what other boards can Craftster members find your work posted?
Mostly my stuff ends up on the Papercraft or Polymer clay boards if it's not here.

What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?
It's usually the one I just finished. Right now, I love the Travelers House on the polyclay board. Actually, I really do love that house to bits.
Racky's Clock from the IYP. I had fun with that one. Mother Goose's Summer Cottage. I know that's more than one, sorry.

What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?
Okay, that's the hardest question to answer. There are things on this site that are gob smacking good and truly inspiring.
Hmm. I'm not going to pick a favorite, because I don't think I can.

Congratulations, cackle! Thank you for being part of the Craftster community and for being so dang sweet ;)!

Title: Quarterly Featured Artist - alwaysinmyroom
Post by: LimeRiot on January 12, 2012 10:00:54 PM
We are SO excited about our featured artist this quarter. Not only is she an incredibly talented and prolific crafter, she is also an amazing inspiration and wonderful cheerleader for all of us.

If you've ever joined a craftalong or visited the craftalong boards here in Miscellaneous, you know the amount of work and love that alwaysinmyroom dedicates to motivating participants and providing support to every member here.

We are thrilled to recognize the contributions that she makes every day to our little Miscellaneous corner and the rest of the Craftster community.

Check out our interview with alwaysinmyroom!!

How long have you been crafting?  What's the first thing you remember crafting?

I started drawing when I was about 7 years old, so that would mean I have been crafting for 50 years!  That might make me the Mesuthela of Craftster...but I definitely don't feel like it since everyone here keeps me young at heart!

The drawing was of the poppies in Flanders field where many of the men from World War I were buried. I still have the picture!

A few years later when I was 10, my mom taught me to knit...crazy, but as a kid, you are fearless...I made a Barbie dress in three colors using size 1 needles...and yeah, I still have the dress!

(This is the actual dress!!!)

What's your favorite media?

Definitely fabric...I love to quilt and sew...bags, stuffies, clothes, curtains, dotees...I enjoy finding new ways to use up my huge stash of fabrics

What inspires you?

Probably things found in nature...what a pat answer this is, since every color and texture can be found in nature...ha...I see color combos in everyday things like leaves, the ocean, a sunset...it helps me with choosing colors for my projects

Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?

I believe that you create what you believe...if you believe you will fail, you will...so why not believe you can do it?  Try anything...be fearless...so what if it is not "prefect"...the process will teach you how to do it better next time...you will gain confidence, pride, a sense of achievement...just go for it

On what other boards can Craftster members find your work posted?

I have probably posted most items on knitting, crocheting, paper and the swap boards...I really take bad pictures so I tend to just post to the craftalongs...I also make so many similar things that I don't want to post every hat I make, for instance :D

(That's okay, we'll share your hats for you :))

What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?

It was on of the first items I made for a swap...it was my little geisha pincushion...I loved making it, and I respected the talent of the receiver...she went to a good home, but I still visit her picture once in a while

What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?

There is so much talent here...this is not a fair question!

However, in recent months, I have had my socks knocked off by the imagination and talent of sheepblue.  Her Teesha Moore inspired projects are perfect for a fabric hoarder like me...I love the bright colors, the messiness, the details...the Harry Potter inspired bag she did still takes my breath away.

Have you invented a machine that allows you to craft at the speed of light? If not, how in the world do you make so many amazing things so quickly?!

ha ha At my age, I have decided to make crafting a priority...It is part of my daily life, just like brushing my teeth is!  I am never going to have a spotless house, or tons of purchased things to take care of...I have dumped most of the stuff in my life that wastes my time or that does not bring me joy...I am a master of multi-tasking, and I have a great, supportive hubby to share life's daily grind--he shops and cooks and does laundry! I watch tv and craft and eat bon bons... :D

Thanks for being such an inspiration and support to so many of us! We love you always, always :).

There's no one more deserving of the recognition! Always is always so positive and nice and encouraging. I love seeing her on the forums!
Last year, she sent me an ATC for a countdown I was doing without asking for anything in return, just because she thought the theme was cool and she thinks I'm nice. How sweet is that?

Congratulations to crazyalien8!! Thank you for sharing your work with the Craftster community.

Dingy Kitchen (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=319859.msg3685703#msg3685703)

How long have you been crafting?  What's the first thing you remember crafting?

It started when a friend of the family gave me one of those plastic canvases, a plastic needle and some yarn when I was four. Ever since then, I've been trying to DIY - even if the outcome haven't turned out perfect! The first this that I remember feeling proud of making was a circle skirt in this bright forest and acid green tye dye. Still have it stuffed in my closet. It's awful.

What's your favorite media?

ALL THE CLAYS. Polymer, ceramic, apoxie, paper. All the ones I haven't discovered yet. Even wax is fun to work with, though challenging. I like transforming a lump of material into a new entity. It's intriguing and exciting to watch the forms emerge.

What inspires you?

So many things! People for one - the human body and all it's differences. The bits and pieces of our life. Ugliness is crazy inspiration! There's so many interesting things to make when you start to cast out the idea of beauty. And then there's all the people on craftster. I've been watching this site for over six years and there has been so many amazing people and projects that have changed how I create my work.

Altoids Tiny Monster House (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=388630)

Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?

Keep working. Don't be afraid to destroy something. Finish it. I try to apply this to all my creative endeavors (try being the key word!) Because if I just follow those simple rules, something amazing can happen. When I don't, the the project just sits  somewhere sad, never getting the chance to flourish.

Altered Altoid Tin (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=400097)

On what other boards can Craftster members find your work posted?

I've dabbled on the Paper Crafts board - made a ton of inchies and sent them all over the place! There was this really cool tiny book swap too - loved crafting that one the most out of all the paper craft swaps.

Tiny Book (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=392017.msg4645057#)

I've posted one of my bronze sculptures (which is currently in a city gallery!) and my Cat Series in Less Craft, More Art.

Since I started browsing craftster over seven years ago, I like Misc the best! It's hard to fit the tins and dioramas into anything other than misc~

Gypsy Wagon Button Hoard Altoid Tin (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=406303)

What's your favorite creation that you've posted to Craftster?

My first diorama! It was the first piece that let me use my craft as art. And since then, I've started to incorporate the fantastic strange and ugly bits of the world into my art.

Dingy Kitchen (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=319859.msg3685703#msg3685703)

What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?

It'd have to be this crazy octopus lamp that CohesiveChaos made. It was made out of crayola model magic and was just absolutely gorgeous. The pictures in her thread are no longer good, but there's a picture of it in this thread (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=326999.0). But really, there's so many other fantastic projects on this website! Like I said earlier, everyone has contributed something inspiring into my own work, and I'm glad we have Craftster to share everything with the community.

Title: Quarterly Featured Artist - Jillybeans!!
Post by: LimeRiot on January 23, 2013 10:04:00 PM
I'm excited to kick off 2013 by recognizing a wonderful crafty artist and all around awesome human, Jillybeans!! Jilly has contributed a long list of projects to our Miscellaneous corner of Craftster and every single one of them has brought a smile to my face. Her art and spirit are both so happy - and I would know because I've been lucky enough to meet her in person!!

Jilly recently took some time to tell us a little more about her crafty self. I hope you enjoy reading this interview as much as I did!

How long have you been crafting? What's the first thing you remember crafting?
Honestly, I can't remember a time in my life that I haven't been crafting.  My mom was, and still is, very support of my crafting love.  Though she was very crafty herself.  She made most of my clothing, and she cross stitched, painted pottery, and was practically a jack of all trades.  Even if we were tight on money, she always seemed to find the money to buy me new craft supplies.  One of my earliest crafts was a rubber band man that I made my mom and dad.  I was probably 3 or 4, and I grabbed some rubber bands, made a head and torso and then cut out really tiny arms and legs out of paper with tiny pieces of tape to hold it all together.  That thing lived on our basement door for the longest time.  Besides that, I did a lot of jewelry making and card making as a kid.  Most of my rubber stamp collection are ones I've had since I was a kid.  Probably some of my beads, too.

What's your favorite media to work with?
Currently my loves are watercolors and paper, as well as working with felt.  Though I go through phases of loving certain media.  Sometimes I will be all about making jewelry, or knitting on my knifty knitter, or cross stitching.  Both working with felt and watercolors are both newer mediums for me.

What inspires you?
Craftster!  I finally joined in 2011, excitedly awaited my month waiting period and started swapping!  Since then, my crafting has intensified ten fold!  I honestly can say I didn't craft as much as I do now.  It was always part of my life, but now it is a HUGE part of my life.  There are so many awesome swaps and each fills me up with so many new ideas.  My husband is also a huge inspiration to me.  He is always supporting me and helps me come up with new ideas when I'm stuck.  He is an amazing sounding board.

Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?
If I had to think of one, it would probably be just have fun, or TRY ALL THE THINGS!  Since crafting should be fun and freeing and I eventually want to know it all!  I hope to soon learn how to crochet!  I've always wanted to learn, and I think this is the year for it!

On what other boards can Craftster members find your work?
Well, lets see:
Bath and Beauty
Cooking
Home Sweet Home
Image Reproduction Techniques
Jewelry and Trinkets
Knitting
More Art, Less Craft
Needlework
Occasions and Holidays
Paper Crafts, Scrapbooking & ATCs
Pottery, Ceramics, Polymer Clay
Purses, Bags, Wallets
Quilting
Toys, Dolls and Playthings
LOTS AND LOTS in the Swap Galleries, though I try to give project I make in the swaps its own posting on the boards.

I do A LOT of ATCs, since I've been running the Ongoing ATC Swap for over a year now.  I also make a lot of freezer paper stenciled t-shirts.  My husband, dad and BIL love them, so they get quite a few.  I love to dabble in new things.  Last fall I took my very first pottery class, which I thoroughly enjoyed and was told that I excelled at.  Throwing was an incredible experience.  I hope to return to a new set of pottery classes soon.  Or, hey, maybe even a glass fusing class!  That would be fun!

What's your favorite creation that you've posted on Craftster?
Aw man, that's a hard question.  I love a lot of stuff I've made.  Being in so many swaps, my husband sees a lot of things made by me that leaves our place to its new home, and it makes him sad.  ^_^  He ends up wanting to keep a lot of it.  Well, I can't pick one, so I think my favorites are the Teesha Moore style Harry Potter Tote that I made for my SIL for her birthday or the Elmer's Sponsered Zentangle High Heels I made for my sister's birthday.  I had seen so many wonderful TM stuff that sheepBlue was making.  I immediately fell in love with the style of it.  I knew it was within my realm of abilities to try it, since it had almost no machine sewing to it, since I'm not great with a sewing machine.  Though, of course, to make it I would need to learn how to embroider.  ^_^  It was hard to give away, since it took over a month of work to complete, with my new embroidery skills.  I'm much quicker now.  My fingers developed some new callouses from that project.  The heels are something I dreamed up.  I always wanted to do some zentangles, and realized around the time I was doing projects for Elmers that it would make a great project for that.  They were so easy and so much fun.  I've made a few different pairs now, and I love each equally.  I know I'm not done making them, since I haven't even made a pair for myself yet.
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=405039.0
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=407228.0

What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?
Not a surprise to anyone, but I'm completely enamored by everything Knickertwist does.  Her "A Little House of Everyday Wonders" that she made for a swap partner is amazing!
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=353043.0
I also love the work of sheepblue, as I mentioned, LimeRiot, cackle, rackycoo, and my crafty bff, gozer.

Thank you for sharing this with us, Jilly and for sharing so many inspiring and helpful projects with the entire Craftster community. You ROCK!

Title: Quarterly Featured Artist - teag!!!
Post by: LimeRiot on March 26, 2013 03:06:06 PM
This month's featured artist is responsible for my favorite repurposed project ever! teag is the incredibly talented crafter behind the Madhatter TP Roll Hats (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=417848.msg4944743#msg4944743) and many other exceptional projects shared in the Miscellaneous category.

Not only does teag create really cool stuff, she also generously shares tutorials with the rest of the Craftster community so I'm extra thrilled to recognize her this quarter!! I loved hearing more about her crafty history and philosophy and I'm sure you will too so read on...

How long have you been crafting? What's the first thing you remember crafting?

I have been crafting for as long as I can remember, when others were toddling around with a baby bottle I was toddling around with a bottle of glue, lol, okay maybe not that long but in my earliest memories I am crafting.

The first thing I remember crafting was a leopard print, dog ash tray holder- I was four years old, sitting in my grandma's easy chair hand sewing this cute floppy dog that sat on the arm of the chair- the dog was made from an old leopard coat that belonged to my grandmother- it's leg were filled with beans and an empty tuna can with holes punched around the bottom attached to the dogs back with yarn held a glass ashtray-He was a father's day gift for my grandfather.  It was a completely re-purposed/ recycled  project

What's your favorite media to work with?

Glue- I love glue- especially white craft glue, that and polymer clay-polymer clay accents seem to show up, unintentionally in most of my projects, in the smallest of ways.

What inspires you?

Toilet paper rolls, lol, actually I find inspiration everywhere . Everything and everyone inspires me-Craftster of course, Pinterest, magazine ads, tv shows, music, nature, colors, shopping trips, sounds and even phrases I've heard

Do you have a crafty/creative philosophy?

There is always time to craft

On what other boards can Craftster members find your work?

Polymer clay boards, the swap boards

What's your favorite creation that you've posted on Craftster?

The thing I am currently making - actually I am so loving my miniature hats from tp rolls, teacup sewing organizer, bird pincushion, harry potter game- do I have to chose one?

What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?

That is a tough question there are so many wonderful crafts on craftster but if I have to choose it would be  microjivvy's Flowerchild Paint Brush Man and a Bird Ė it is so well done- and it moves! I am in awe every time I come across it.

You've proven to be an impressive TP transformer with your recent projects. Any clues into what your next TP roll creation might be?? Inquiring minds want to know ;)!

I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you, lol - actually I have a couple more ideas that have yet to become a reality so we'll all just have to wait and see

Thank you for being such a special member, teag! I can't wait to see what project you come up with next :).

I had the honour to swap with teag! I can tell you that she is an excellent seamstress too!!
She made me such a fun and pretty  Autumn ninni. (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=414508.msg4912231;topicseen#msg4912231)

I love the little tp hats and tried to make that too. I made two of them, one was worn by my oldest son when he pretended to be a magicien.

Thanks teag! I am crushing on you too! And I'm going to check out the other projects too, so adorable. You are talented!  :)

Congratulations to our featured artist for Q2, pottermouth!!

When we first saw her Girl with a Kite pincushion (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=422710.msg5019632#msg5019632), we knew we had to highlight her! She is such an awesome talent with a great sense of humor. We're really happy to get to brag about her contributions to the Miscellaneous category and share a bit more about her with the community :)! Read on for more information about pottermouth!!

How long have you been crafting? What's the first thing you remember crafting?

To answer the first question, I'll have to mention a story told to me by my mom, because I was about 3 when it happened. The story involves a red crayon, which I used to discreetly outline all of my bedroom furniture. Right on the wall. No one was the wiser until we moved! The first things I remember crafting were re-enactment scenes for my Star Wars figures out of milk cartons and construction paper. (Still have 'em!)

click here (http://i.imgur.com/0hXC5z3.jpg) to see an awesome picture of pottermouth loving on her Star Wars figures

What's your favorite media to work with?

Going on my stash piles, I'd have to say yarn. Knitting and crocheting are comforting and it's kinda cool to turn a string into socks.

What inspires you?

Little kid art. The things that they come up with! Also books (especially vintage ones), nature, the recycling bin, and Craftster for sure. Craftster is an inspirational gold mine.

(Paintings I reproduced from my twins' art when they were four!)

Do you have a creative philosophy?

Yes I do. "With These Hands". Whether that means creating art, growing a garden, nurturing a child, or even throttling said child for doing something dumb, haha!  I most certainly fall into the category of people who must.make.stuff.

On what other boards can Craftsters find your work?

Well, let's seeÖumÖI think I'm all over the place. That's probably because I tend to want to immediately try or do something, whether it's cooking, sewing, paper crafts, whatever. It would be an achievement to post a project in every category, and maybe that will be a long-term goal. Besides the HP Craftalong, I'm mostly hanging out in kittykill's monthly Hoopla-Along over in Needlework.

What's your favorite creation you've posted on Craftster?

Maybe the watercolour of my DH I painted after finding weighanchor's masking fluid tutorial. The same process was used to paint all of our kids, as well as a goofy one of myself, so the personal attachment makes it a favourite.

What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?

Is this an unswerable question?! Craftster is loaded with inspiring, amazing things- how could I choose one?

We're judging from your username, your projects and your participation in the HP craftalongs that you're a fan of Harry Potter. Do you have a favorite HP craft that either you or another member has created?

Ah, Harry Potter. Discovering the HP Craftalong was a momentous day, and with the encouragement from pinkleo, I dove headfirst into a wonderful community of people. Everyone has unique talents that have exposed me to many new crafts and I'm glad to be a part of it. If you twisted my arm and told me to choose just one craft, I'd have to say tapestrymlp's Harry Potter Photo Kit. Not only are the pictures hilarious, the idea was brilliant and perfectly executed.

A-well-a, bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word!! Congratulations to our latest featured artist in the Miscellaneous category, thisbirdsabsurd!! I've long admired her work in swap galleries, Toys, Poly Clay and of course our little Miscellaneous corner of Craftster :). I'm thrilled to recognize her talents and learn more about her crafty history and inspiration. Read her fun interview below - enjoy!!

Fish Wind Chimes (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=427461.msg5094743#msg5094743)

How long have you been crafting? What's the first thing you remember crafting?
I've been crafting for as long as I can remember.  I have such great memories of sitting around the kitchen table learning how to do block printing with my mom, making Valentines with my grandmother, learning to embroider and make Christmas ornaments - all before I was seven years old. I think I was pretty lucky to grow up in an artistic family.

Tired Old Elf (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=397497.msg4694816#msg4694816)

What's your favorite media to work with?
This is a tricky question, in fact, I may not have even discovered my favorite medium yet!  I have a little bit of crafty ADD going on, always thinking of a new technique I want to try, but I'll say probably anything that includes fabric, (I am a self proclaimed fabric-aholic) and love to come up with new ideas for soft sculpture type projects.  I love to draw and paint too so I like to incorporate that into these creations.

Chicken Spoon (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=424195.msg5044494#msg5044494)

What inspires you?
Everything inspires me!!  I have to carry a notebook with me because I never know when I might have a light bulb moment.  I even have a notebook by my bed because ideas have a tricky way of sneaking up on me as I'm drifting off to sleep and I will TOTALLY forget what they were if I don't write them down. (They don't always make sense when I wake up in the morning, but once in a while it's something awesome.)  And of course, all the amazing Craftsters have been a HUGE inspiration to me - I don't even know what I did before I discovered this place!

Fish Wind Chimes (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=427461.msg5094743#msg5094743)

Do you have a creative philosophy?
My creative philosophy is - have no fear.  If you want to try something new- do it!  Don't ever tell yourself you can't.  Sometimes it'll be a complete and total failure, sometimes it'll be a masterpiece.  I am still a miserable knitter, but every year or so I pick up the needles and give it one more try.  Someday I plan on doing something more ambitious than a scarf.

OH MY! Sewing Kit (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=329272.msg3801892#msg3801892)

What's your favorite creation you've posted on Craftster?
I have trouble remembering everything I've posted on Craftster - but two that come to mind are my Gashlycrumb reaper doll and my chocolate cupcake Altoid tin.

What's your favorite item on Craftster created by someone else?
Okay, now this is a TOTALLY unfair question! I am so blown away by some of the work on here - how can I even begin to pick a favorite???  But once again, a few that come to mind are cackle's Baba Yaga house, Racky's grinning Halloween cat and Janesays13's fair isle gnome hat (because I am envious of all knitters!)  . But really, I see things on Craftster every week that truly amaze me- I could never pick just one!

Bird Mobile (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=322877.msg3725442#msg3725442)

Your username is so fun! Tell us how you came up with that.
Well, I will reluctantly tell you that I am the neighborhood bird lady - haha!  I have several parrots and I'm the one that gets the knock on the door to rescue a hawk in the house or the baby crow in the street or the hummingbird who's wings are glued together with tree sap. (Yes, all those things happened.)  My friends and family poke fun at me about it, so when it came time to come up with a "brand name", "thisbirdsabsurd" just seemed to fit the bill.

Thanks, thisbridsabsurd! We can't wait to see what you come up with next!
