Title: PS3 Mascot Sackboy!! (Now with even more info on his construction!)
Post by: a_falsario on January 10, 2009 10:34:59 PM
*Correction*

For my boyfriend's Christmas present I decided to take on Sackboy from the PS3 game, Little Big Plant.  I think I did a pretty good job! I was surprised!  My boyfriend really love it.  I'd be pretty upset if he didn't! The whole little guy took about two stressful weeks!  I couldn't find a pattern that I really liked so I decided to figure it out myself.  It involved a LOT of trial and error.  ::)

I don't know if anyone will want a tutorial but honestly I'm not very sure about how I made him. I completely winged it. I believe that the actual character is supposed to be knitted but I'm not very good at knitting. Instead I crocheted him!

I used a I/9-5.50MM hook and sport weight yarn.

I just used single crochets and decreases/increases.  I made each piece a few times before I came up with something I was happy with. He is made up of 21 pieces (head, flat circle for the top of his head, body, two arms, two hands, two legs, two feet, and ten fingers) all sewn together with either yarn or two strands of brown thread. I bought the yarn and button eyes at Wal-Mart for a total of about 3 dollars. His tongue is a piece of felt and the fabric in his mouth is like a canvas material.

----Mouth (The most time consuming part for me!)

In order to have the mouth fit, you obviously need to skip a bunch of stitches in the crochet work to leave room to sew in the mouth piece. You need to make sure you have a place to put it!

Anywho, I broke a CD in half and then laid it on a piece of the black canvas. I made sure that there was at least half an inch of fabric showing around the CD. This fabric was used to sew the mouth piece to the head. The CD pieces were placed so that the broken sides are almost touching, so it almost looked like the CD was whole. I left a little less than 1/16in in between the pieces going all the way across. I then taped both pieces to the canvas so they wouldn't move. After that I laid another piece of fabric (the same size) on top of the CD pieces. I then sewed around the inside of the little circle. Once that was done I outlined the round edges of the CD so that I could easily see where the CD was. That made it much easier when I stitched all around the CD. I removed the tape as I got to it during the sewing.

Once the stitching was done, you could see the outline of the CD and the hole in the middle. I then stitched across the CD through the space I had left between the pieces. Because the CD was sewn in between the fabric while laying flat, there is some resistance when it's folded in half. That's what keeps the mouth open. I then sewed the mouth to the inside of the head.

**I guess it would be the time to say that I crocheted the head from the bottom of the neck up. I inserted the mouth piece once I crocheted a few rows above the mouth space.

The crocheted head keeps the mouth from opening too far.

----Sackboy guts...

Since his head is much bigger than his body I have a canvas tube of stuffing sewn to the bottom of his body going up through his neck and attached to the back of his mouth. That way his head stays up. Without it he looked really, really creepy.  His head slumped over to one side and looked like it was going to fall off.  :-\

----Hands and fingers

The hands and the fingers are crocheted in amigurumi fashion just like the rest of him. It's a completely closed shape. The two ends are the back and palms of his hands. The hands were started from 5 stitches and then increased to the size I thought was proportionate. I then sc around for 3 rows and then decreased to close.

The fingers were all crocheted separately and then sewn on with thread. I believe that they are all 6 stitches around and about 4 or 5 rows long. I left the ends open.

----Details

The white stitching around his body is purely decorative.

The zipper was cut out of felt and sewed onto his body with regular thread. The zipper pull is made out of polymer clay and painted with acrylic paint.  It is attached to the body with thread.

If you have any questions or comments just let me know!

You did a really wonderful job on him! I am sure that a gamer wouldn't be much concerned (or notice?) about the difference between knit and crochet. :) (I really want to play this game but have no ps3 :( )

Bravo!

Thanks so much! I've actually never played the game so it's nice to know that my work is acceptable to the people who do!  ;)

Well done! Yes the original is knitted but this looks just like him. Besides, I don't think the makers of the games really took crafters into consideration -- crochet is far more suitable for a little guy like this anyway. Awesome job. :)

This is the most well-made sackboy I have yet to see on the Internet. You should be very proud, and I bet your boyfriend is super-happy. Great job! As a fellow crocheter and Little Big Planet player, I am inspired.  ;D

That's a good question! The hand and the fingers are crocheted in amigurumi fashion just like the rest of him. It's a completely closed shape. The two ends are the back and palms of his hands. I used a I/9-5.50MM hook and sport weight yarn. I really hope that all makes sense. I'm not very good at this because I've never crocheted anything that people wanted to try to recreate. lol Again, if you have any questions please ask.

how exactly did you do the mouth?  I read that you used a c.d., but how did you make it pop open? (if that makes any sense)

It makes perfect sense!

**I guess it would be the time to say that I crocheted the head from the bottom of the neck up. I inserted the mouth piece once I crocheted a few rows above the mouth space.

The crocheted head keeps the mouth from opening too far.

That maybe more than you were looking for! Sorry if it was. I wanted to be as thorough as possible. Let me know if I left you with more questions! :D

Great job! You did the mouth pretty much the same way I figured out how to do mine, though since I work on a smaller scale (latest Sackboy is only 9.5"), I found that the backing wasn't needed for it. The hands are so well done!

I really don't know anything but scarves when it comes to knitting so I'm probably not much help! lol However, here is a link to a knitting pattern for a Sackboy http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00686/SKM49_2__proj_sackb_686954a.pdf (http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00686/SKM49_2__proj_sackb_686954a.pdf).

cat9
I'm flattered that you would want to steal my idea!! Have fun!

cassiecate57
I'm probably not going to attempt Sackboy again. I would have written down my pattern if I would have know it was going to get so much attention! Buuuut...I didn't.  :( He was a "work in progress" for about three weeks. I didn't work on him every day so it's more like two weeks, but I could only stand to work on him for a few hours at a time! It was so frustrating to figure out all of his components. Now, with most of the construction work written out hopefully it will be easier for others to figure out the proportions of his parts.  :D

scorch
I originally intended on making him some costumes but I finished him the day before Christmas! Once I had his body done, I really procrastinated on the decorating part... ::)

causticmuse
Your Sackboy is cute! My Sackboy saw yours and is now embarrassed that he's still naked... :-[

Wow. Great job!

Im working on a pattern of my own, however, I am having trouble with the open mouth version (I did a normal version and sewed in a line for his mouth).

For your mouth, how did you go about decreasing the stitches? Im a little green to crochet, (only making afghans and scarves) so crocheting in the round is an entirely new concept for me.

The mouth was really easy to do. I didn't decrease at all. You just crochet in the round until you get to the place where you want the mouth to start. Instead of crocheting like normal, count out how many stitches wide you want the mouth to be and then chain that many. You want to skip over all of those stitches you normally would have crocheted into, and connect your chain to the other side of the mouth. The amount of stitches you skip must correspond to the number you chained. Then you just continue crocheting in the round. You should have a nice big hole for the mouth now. Right after I did that, I sewed in the mouth piece.

That's how I did mine. Other than that, I don't know how you would go about actually crocheting an open mouth. I'm still pretty new to crocheting in the round too. Good luck with your pattern!  :)

You Should sell them on Etsy. When my hubby saw it that was the 1st question he asked. You did an AWESOME job.

I love it. The size is great too. I've only seen much smaller versions that people have done.

I loved this so much I had to try and make one too. I tried to follow your pattern, but I can't follow on to save my soul. Thanks for the inspiration. I would never had tried it without seeing yours
. I hope that he measures up. (^_^)

OMG OMG OMG - I WANT ONE !!!!   That is sooooo cool.   I may have to try this in miniature form.  I love LBP and would love to make one with the 'costume' my little sackgirl (as opposed to sackbo y;P ) wears mostly :)

 Love your work

That's awesome! I didn't think to crochet one!  ;D My boyfried has been dropping hints for a Sack Boy doll for a while so I've been secretly knitting one following a pattern I found here: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/fun/gizmo/article2056598.ece (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/fun/gizmo/article2056598.ece)
Now I'm working on constructing a few more for the kids out of other types of fabric like the Sack Boys in the game. (^_^)

This makes me want to learn how to crochet so much, lol. He's super cute! If your boyfriend didn't appreciate it after all that work you would have good reason to be upset, but who couldn't love that little guy, he's awesome!
