I was just thinking the other day that my kitchen is boring!  I have not matching decor, save a few washcloths that other Craftsters have made for me.  I'd love some wall type decor or matching towels that I can put out when guests come over...  Also I have been wanting to make some placemats, but we do not use them so I'd love to make them for a partner.  :)

We just got a new kitchenette set and it is screaming for placemats, etc.  DH & I had been eating in the living room.   ::)

Random question...what do you think a large item would be on a swap like this?  The only thing I could think would even be close is an apron.

A complete set of semi-detailed place mats would be a large to me. or a set of (insert material) bowls would be a large. I consider sets medium to large depending on the details, because no one would send just one place mat.... I hope that helps

I just did a bunch of coasters - I should put pics up.  It was super easy.  I cut out 4" squares in the fabric I was using and from an old bath towel.  Then I serged the fabric squares to the towel squares (one fabric square on each side).  And to finish, I went around the edges with bias tape.  The old towel mops up moisture and best of all, it was free!  ;)  I made wine themed ones for me, duck themed ones for DH, and train themed ones for my dad, and a set for another swap.  I might try circles next time...

DeannaLynn06 - I have made a ton of those fingertip mitts & I give a thumbs up to that tutorial.  I made the oven mitts on that site, though, and they made less sense & were a bit snug.

I totally love the idea of those finger tip mitts!!

My favorite apron pattern is the one that's been all over craftster, but I now can't find the link. Maybe you guys can help; it's a 5 paneled full apron with rounded edges. The one I saw (that I *thought* I bookmarked) that was really great was a teal and pink version.

I'm imagining all sorts of great things to make. Is it the 8th yet???? :)

Okay, I'm going to bed now. Hopefully we will have partners in the morning.

*waves to future partner*

I have been sick all week so am making up my hours this weekend. Will be working 10 am to 1 am Fri, Sat and Sun (yes, that's 15 hour shifts) so if I don't get a chance to write til Monday, then sorry future partner. But I'll be thinking about ya! I already have lots of ideas of what I'm gonna make and just need to know my partner's tastes in fabric choices and kitchen themes.

Oh I was just teasing on the partner bit last night.  Surprisingly (with all the swaps I'm in), I don't craft in my sleep.  ;)

Well, my partner has my wheels turning already.  This swap is going to be a little more artsy for me but I know some perfect projects for inspiration!

*progress check-in*

i've been super excited about this swap, and i had plenty of ideas for what i wanted to do -- but the beginning stages of a swap are always a little stressful for me.
i have too many ideas, and can't seem to make a final decision.
i finally narrowed down my choices, and went shopping for the last of my supplies today -- after trips to two different craft stores [including a forgotten wallet incident!], i'm ready to snuggle in and get down to business!  :D

Okay, I stayed up late last night, watched some historical dramas (perfect genre for crafting, I think! I watched "The Other Boleyn Girl" and "Vanity Fair") and got 2 mediums done.

I just want to let everyone know, that I don't want this to be a stressful swap. So if you are struggling with point values, just think about what your partner would say when they open your package. If they are going to say "wow this is the best package ever", you probably are going to be fine with what you sent. If they say, "wow, I wish she had done more", you probably should do a little bit more. I want you guys to use your best judgment, in every swap I have been in, everyone sends the right amount to make their partners happy. Remember to make sure you and your partner are in agreement with how much to send. I don't want someone to be mad because she made 15 pts worth of stuff, but her and her partner agreed to only made 7.

Remember to have fun!

On my progress... I have all the supplies, and the ideas set (for now). I just need to finish up something for another swap, so I don't have a ton of ufo sitting in my room. I should finish all that up today and get started on some kitchen goodies.

I have all the supplies for two crafts, and most of the supplies for another. For the other thing, I will probably have to venture to the distant A.C. Moore... I'll start crafting sometime this week. I have to balance this swap with a bit of knitting I'm doing for a friend who's about to have a baby.

I have a question for you ladies. I'm making me a set of placemats out of cotton fabrics. What should I use for lining? I was going to use fleece like my last set but I quilted the last set so it kind of reduced the bulkiness in it. I'll only be topstitching in the middle from top to bottom and from right to left so I don't want them to be so bulky. But I want them to be washable and still hold their shape. Should I use heavy duty interfacing or light interfacing or nothing at all or maybe flannel? Any ideas?

I used a medium weight interfacing in the ones I made for you. Something about the same as the fabric to make them sturdy, but not wrinkle really bad

This tutorial just showed turn and topstitch. I think they used fusable fleece though.

I'd been thinking of making myself some placemats & a table runner and I really like things that aren't so thin I have to worry about putting a hot plate on them.  So I was thinking of doing what I did with my coasters & using a cut up old towel or two since I figured terry would also be good to sop up moisture.  I've used a thin batting in the past, too, and although they came out kind of puffy, they worked.  They would be great if you wanted to quilt them.  Actually, my aunt & I were talking about making placemats out of that pre-quilted fabric you can get now, too, but I'm not big on most of the patterns - kinda grandma-ish.  I think fleece would be great as a liner, too, and it's on sale all over the place right now.

And I know there are a million apron patterns floating around out there these days (and I’m partial to a full over a half) but I thought these were cute/easy:

I've been chatting with my partner so much, I haven't posted in this thread almost at all! I've been reading it though and love the tutorials you guys have linked to.

Here's my update: I'm headed out to the fabric store looking for toile and I have a plan that currently has about 6 items. I hope that I have enough time to get everything done! As I seem to always do on swaps, I'm trying some techniques I've never done before, so I've got my fingers crossed that everything works out.

Hope you're all having a good time planning and crafting, too!

I don't know what's going on. but I had to hunt down this thread instead of finding it in the 'Replies to your posts' section. I THOUGHT is had been awfully quiet, then I find there's been a bunch of messages posted!

Anyhow, I think I have everything I need, but that could change. One of the supplies I knew I already had seems to have gone bad, though I don't know how it could. I'll have to run a test before I start using it, I guess.

I finally cut fabric last night, so maybe tonight I will get some of the sewing done. I put in my two weeks notice at work, so I will have a good week of crafting before send outs (if I don't get any subbing positions that week).

My partner does a lot of sewing and dislikes her kitchen, so I've had to come up with a plan 'B', but I love a good challenge. And if my already-have stuff turns out to have gone bad, I'll either buy some more, or come up with a plan 'C'!

Odd_artist, I'm not even your partner, but I'm intrigued by your "something may have gone bad" post! That sounds fun!

Plan 'A' was to etch a set of wine glasses. I spent an hour or so cutting out the design and applying it to the inside of one glass. Then I stirred all the crystals and goo back into the etch bath, and poured it into the glass. Glad hubby was sleeping, because it sure looked like chocolate milk, and I didn't want him sneaking a sip! (I have always used the etching PASTE in the past, and must have purchased the etch BATH about the same time - about 10 years ago!)

So, while the stuff is etching the first glass, I am preparing the second one. I pour the bath from the first to the second glass, and rinse the first one. I can see right away, this ain't gonna work. The stuff got under the design in several places, and all the edges look like hell. And everything was etched unevenly too. I pour all the bath back into the jar and toss it. Both glasses too.

Plan 'B' went out the window quickly as well. Am now tossing plan 'C' around in my brain, trying to play Devil's Advocate with myself. Don't want to have to throw anything else away. I have $36 to last til next payday - two weeks from today.

I am now setting this mess aside, and working on a quick small, just to make myself feel like I accomplished something. And it's only Friday...

Not to worry, I may be having setbacks, but I LOVE a good challenge, and trying to find a way to pull off a swap like this without purchasing anything (due to $) is forcing me to think outside the box. But when you have as many years of supplies built up as I do (and I threw away a dumpster-full 5 years ago), it's giving me the incentive to organize and reacquaint myself with what I have. It's kind of like Christmas all over again!

My partner is so awesome - and I haven't even received yet!
Just thinking about having something other than the old rags I've been using so long is bringing tears to my eyes!

Finished a small. Started the other. and I'm still not sure which will be my medium and which will be my large, but one is 1/2 finished, and the other is 1/4 finished....

How do you determin large or medium? Is it by size, or amount of time it takes to make?

It could be either, but I usually go by the time it takes to make things.  If I spend a long, long time on something, even if it isn't really large in size, I wouldn't count it as a small.  Conversely, if I make something pretty large in size, but it only took an hour, I don't count it as my large.

I had a crafting bonanza night on Thursday and put everything together.  I had already cut out the patterns for my large and made one small, but I finished the large and completely made my medium and other small.  It's all packed up now, and I'll ship once the post office is open.

I just shipped, so wanderlust should be getting her package within the next week or so.  I had to ship Parcel Post because Priority Mail was almost twice as expensive since the package is going all the way across the country.

Just checking in!  I don't really have anything new to report.  I was going to go to the fabric store this week for the rest of my supplies, but we had an ice storm so haven't gotten to it yet.  I'll probably end up going this weekend at this rate.

My mom and my mother in law are both here for the weekend AND my grandma is in the hospital (although she's going to be fine) so I've been a little interrupted in my crafting. My partner doesn't need to worry though, I'll get everything done in time to send. :) I'm excited about what I'm working on -- I just hope it all turns out well! :)

I can't wait for the gallery to get going so we can see what other people have done. :)

I'm working on a large item & got about a third of the way through it today.  I'll finish most (if not all) tomorrow & I'll take a little craft inventory ;) & then I'm going to the fabric store to get supplies for the rest.  I have even branched outside of the sewing a bit on the large item, so I hope it turns out.   :o

Glad to hear your grandma will be fine, eirle!

I have a mini vent.   ;D  So I bought ___, prewashed it, & it shrank 4" in width!!!  Now I'm going to have to go back to Joann's & buy another ___ of ___.   :P  I'm a stickler for dye lots so to make all ___ of ___, I need another ___.  So...not...cool.

Anyway, I'm 90% done with large item A - just need to design a stencil & ___ the ___.  I have (almost) all my pieces of fabric cut out for the rest & the sewing will be easy.  Then I need to stencil, heat set, and voila.  :)  I might do a couple __ - depends on if I run out of time.

okay so I'm making some _________ and I'm having to use the ____ ____ _____ and my fingers are killing me because I keep ____ them. And I've never crafted for a swap and used the ______ for so many different projects. I've always been a seamstress and just sewn a whole bunch of stuff. Once I was adding ruffles to something and was pushing the fabric through and shoved my finger right under the needle. I didn't even realize the needle went all the way through my finger until I was pressing on the pedal and it wouldn't go. The needle going in my finger didn't hurt, I barely noticed it. It was the turning the wheel very slowly to make the needle come out of my finger that hurt the worse. Or maybe seeing the blood go all over the thing I was making just as I was almost done with it the night before it was due. Okay, so that's my horror crafting story for yall. I had a big hole in my finger nail for about 2 months. I'm almost done with my projects. I have 2 more ______ to make and 2 more ______ to make and 1 very nice _______ to make, all requiring the stupid ____ ____ ____ that _____ my fingers. Off to finish crafting!!!

Wow. I like all these posts with blanks -- it's like Madlibs! I've finally finished a medium that's been sitting around for a week waiting for enough clear table space to work on it. The ____ that I ordered finally arrived so I can finish my other medium in an hour or two. My slightly-larger-than-large (started as a large and got bigger) still needs some stuff to be cut out but I can't find my cutting mat since our move and I'd really rather use the rotary cutter. The sewing for that should be super quick but as seems to have been the case all along in this swap, I'm feeling a little bit behind.

:) That's okay, it'll all get done soon enough. But I'm sure I'll be sending on Friday. :)

Two of my fingers made a new friend in Mr. Meat Slicer yesterday. Ouch ouch ouch! It hurt so bad! I had to take a day off from crafting so I hope I'm not behind, but they seem better enough today that I'm hoping to catch up tomorrow! They are still sore, but I think it will be easier to work on things tomorrow.  :-[

YAY! I'm done. I have the whole kitchen set up waiting on camera to charge to take pics before I send. It all looks fabulous (to me anyways) but I just don't know if it's enough. I might have to go shopping for a few extras to throw in though I've never seen anything in my partner's theme. Oh and I'm broke. Waiting desperately on tax refund. Can't wait. Hope it gets here this week cause I'm going to casino again on Saturday night. I lost $200 2 saturdays ago so hopefully I'll win big this Saturday. My sis ran to the car to put something up and I sat at a slot machine waiting on her to get back. I watched this lady blow through $1200 in about 20 minutes on the slots. Hope no one here has a gambling problem like her. That's crazy to lose that kind of money...IN 20 MINUTES. I'll be sending tonight or tomorrow.

Too late!! LOL, but don't worry, I couldn't find anything worth adding to the box. Target doesn't have much in kitchen items. But I do hope it's enough. It's all packed in a huge diaper box and on it's way to you. Hope ya like it! I wanted to do something extremely tedious but went the simple route since I think you will use it more.

I'm still working my fingers hard to finish everything, however one of my projects isn't drying well and I'd hate to send it wet for fear it will mildue. If it doesn't dry I may try to help it along, but it may mean that I can't send til tomorrow. I feel AWEFUL! I am pleased with how everything has turned out though and i am going to try desperately to finish today.
