Title: "I like you America" Gun Cozy
Post by: mlheran on September 05, 2008 11:33:25 AM
So it looks like I'll have to be the one to go there...  ;)

First off, this is my first project ever posted on Craftster, but I've been lurking and enjoying all the creative people for some time now. This challenge struck me because I just recently purchased my first handgun. Please understand that I'm not a crazy gun person; I'm a white, rural-CA-dwelling, violence and crime disdaining, 32-year-old woman who had never fired a gun before taking a handgun safety class earlier this year. I was quite pleased that I'm a bit of a "natural" and completely LOVE target shooting on the range!

Anyway, I thought for sure someone else would do a gun cozy! The few I googled were knitted and more pocket-like, but I wanted something a little different...

First I started with a literal scrap of this amazing fabric I found in a bin of clothes in the reuse-recycle area of our dump. How great is this?!

From there I traced my shiny new Glock 19 to create a pattern blank which I can use for many types of "cozies."

Close-up of the pattern with my notations...

I wanted something that revealed a bit of what was in it, for textural and visual contrast, and I also wanted to be able to use it while the gun was locked. A bit of the irony is due to the fact that when the cozy is on the gun is almost completely inoperable.  ;)

And then there's the whole message on the fabric! How can that not impart irony?! Actually, I've learned that it can go a few ways -my intention was to have the cozy almost be like a straightjacket that says, in effect, "thank you for keeping me safe" while rendering the gun useless. Other people I've shown it to have read it as being pro-gun and pro-America (which it IS, but...). BAH! We're not here for politics, bring on the craft!!

After several hours sewing tiny seams and hand-tacking rick-rack...

Snaps in the back...

(They're "antiqued," not cracked!  ;D)

Fully functional snaps, at that!

The right side has the same message...

The all-important open area for the chamber...

And with the slide unlocked -much more familiar looking...

Ready to go to the range! Can't wait to hear what they'll say when they see this...   ::)

I'm looking forward to making many more of these -fleece, lace, vinyl, the possibilites are endless!!

(And I do hope this post doesn't spark controversy. I know guns, gun safety, and gun rights are generally touchy issues, but let's focus on the silly cozy, okay?)

Sweet glock. I love glocks. And I love your cozy. It's hilarious and cute. How can you go wrong?

W.O.W that is pretty sweet.

I am actually afraid of guns but this one is really cute... < How often can you write a sentence like that?

Great job!

Haha that fabric cracks me up. The cozy is great, looks really well done. :)

I don't think there should be any trouble making posts or anything. The only thing that kind of set me aback was where you said, "Please understand that I'm not a crazy gun person; I'm a white, rural-CA-dwelling, violence and crime disdaining, 32-year-old woman"  I'm not sure what being white has to do with proving your not a crazy gun shooting criminal. :/

other than that, I hate guns but I love the cozy! :)

oh sweet heavens, this has got to be one of the most hilarious things i have ever seen!!!  the fabric itself is sheer awesome, and who on earth would ever think to make a GUN cozy?!  I wonder what my Philadelphia police officer fiance would say if one day there were one on his glock!?  rofl  this is awesome!!

I'm not sure what being white has to do with proving your not a crazy gun shooting criminal. :/

who cares?

Good point. I speak only marginally better than I write, which isn't that great at all! I'm pretty sure I understood that the usual statistical stereotype of a "crazy gun person" is a white male, which I'm not (on either count, that is, crazy or male  :P). But because I started adding all sorts of adjectives to that sentence I think I muddled it all up (as usual). I should probably just delete all the text and just have the pics!  :-X

This is truly one of the funniest things I've seen recently. Do you mind if I steal one of the photos for my desktop?

I'm really grooving on the slogan. It's like, "I really like you America. We can totally be friends, but let's not get all carried away and call it 'love.'"

At first, as I was scanning through the 'recent with pics' posts, I thought this was some sort of high-tech glue gun. The fact that it's a real gun makes it even more awesome! Not that I'm into guns, but a bright and cheerful gun cozy is just awesome. You can tell you spent a lot of time making sure it fit perfectly and look flawless as well   :)

Wow...This is unbelievable.
Good for you for finding an unusual way to be crafty..but really, in my opinion, this is just wrong. What's next? Post of guns that are painted with acrylic and rhinestones?
Weapons should not be glamorized.

Oh the irony in a second amendment sort of way ;). That fabric was definitely a find! Wish I came across stuff like that when I was thrifting. Love the rick rack and the buttons. Looks very professional.

LOL, I totally thought that too! "Let's just be friends -it's not you, it's me."  ;D

And as for the desktop photo, sure. Thanks for asking!

I can see where you were going, and I know the irony is certainly there. However, I don't think this is something that I would condone doing, especially multiple times. The cozy is colorful and bright and cherry and pretty, and it glamorizes and makes it look inviting to children, and more toy like. Just my opinion.

Title: Re: "I like you America" Gun Cozy
Post by: kimmasaurus on September 05, 2008 12:43:54 PM
ok, i am sorry, i'm a sarcastic bitch here... but i must post this or i will implode rofl...

did anyone here not have a capgun when they were 10?  i hope you gals never ever EVERRRR watch TV & movies or purchase your child (if you have any/want any/whatever) toys of superheros, bb guns, paint ball guns, wrestlers, cops n robbers costumes, grand theft auto and games of the like or ***gasp*** old school gangsta rap!!!  b/c all that stuff does is "make guns/sex/weapons/etc inviting to children." i really dont think it's the kids we have to worry about, so much as their parents... how about leaving the politics at the door and moving on to the next post.  no one is going to change political views via craftster, so just let it go!

...in my opinion, this is just wrong. What's next? Post of guns that are painted with acrylic and rhinestones? Weapons should not be glamorized.[/color]
I vote for the rhinestones.

...I don't think this is something that I would condone doing, especially multiple times. The cozy is colorful and bright and cherry and pretty, and it glamorizes and makes it look inviting to children, and more toy like. Just my opinion.
i condone doing it, a million times. cozies for all seasons!
(i am 99.9% sure, that the people here are responsible and are not giving their kiddies tutorials on gun cozy making.)

that is hysterical. i love the fabric so much the message is funny and bizarre. why would the fabric designer not "love" america? why would they not go all the way with that sentiment? and to turn it into a gun cozy! that is too brilliant.

i wanted to make a gun cozy, but i'm scared to death of them.  also i know no one with a handgun.  i loooove the fabric.

i posted the above before i read the other replies.  no one hates guns more than i do, but that doesn't mean other people can't have and enjoy and make bad ass cozies for.  people need to lighten up a little sometimes.

;D This is just freakin' hysterical......I love that it is controversial, and it doesn't glamorize it as others may have said....it is just a gun cozy. With irony  ;D
::) I also love that you promoted the safety issue...as someone with many rifles and bows/arrows in her house with small kids, if you can't teach responsibility and respect for the dangerous, than it defeats the purpose. Boring lecture now over  :P
That being said......THIS ROCKS!!!

This is too funny!!! I love it!! I used to be deathly afraid of guns until over Memorial Day weekend my Father-in-Law took me out shooting. First time I EVER touched/held/shot a gun. It was a rush and now I'm not so afraid but always practice gun safety :)

This is just too perfect for the ironic cozies. It's gonna be a hard vote for me this time :)

I also LOVE the idea of a lacy one, naughty meets nice :D

First: The fabric is fantastic.

Second: I <3 rickrack.

Third: That red gun lock is swanky.

Fourth: I have never seen anything like this, and I mean that as a compliment.

I'm scared of guns. I fired a friend's flippin' twelve gauge at a skeet shooting range and it was the first time I ever fired, touched, and even saw a real gun that wasn't in a police officer's holster or behind glass in a museum. I'm pretty much anti-gun politically, but anyone who wraps their gun in rick rack and 80's scraps clearly shares my sense of humour and has some mad sewing skillz-- and overall knows what she's doing.

You should do a coordinating bandolier(sp?) (for bullets and/or lipbalms).

Okay, from my non-American perspective, this is hilarious!!! Looking at your beautiful handiwork (the buttons rule!!) put a smile on my face. In my mind, all americans have gun cozies that look like this!

And a bit of gun trivia for you: where I live, handguns are illegal. Gun lovers here will have to use a lot more fabric to make cozies for their rifles!!!

Same here. A rifle cozy would be hilarious though!!! I feel inspired to make a frilly lace cozy for my mothers husband (he hunts deer and elk) but I'm thinking it might embarrass him in front of the other manly-men hunters...   ;D

This is all sorts of awesome. I offered to make one for my husband's Glock but he declined. Boo. :(

Maybe I'll surprise him one day. Or just get my own handgun and cozy-away! Bwahahaha! My BIL just got an AR... maybe I'll do one for him. XD The possibilities are endless.

Speechless.  :o I saw the pic, realized what it was, and just about fell off my seat!  This is priceless!!  For me the slogan is great, but like I think someone else said it's really the rick rack that sets it off.  Especially contrasted with the shiny mother-of-pearl snaps.  Very well done, well-fitted, and hysterical to boot!  Great job!

ha HA!  This is so stinkin' clever!  We (hubby & I) own both handguns, rifles and shotties... I'm a rifle & shottie girl myself I wonder....

LOL- Anyway, the fit looks amazing and the snaps make me think of those old western fancy pants boots that the ladies wore, which I think is fitting  :)  And as everyone else has mentioned the slogan is so perfect.  You've got irony going on in multiple aspects of this one.  You've got MY vote!

oooooooh - I have way too many airsoft gun props for my Stargate costumes - wonder if they feel the need to be cozied?  We did make a bunch of pink and purple harnesses for the AR-15's once, and added some cute stickers, to match the pink and purple Camouflage Stargate Girlie Alternate Universe costumes....

But a cozy AR-15?  Who would have thought!  What a stupendous idea!  Craftster is truly the site for creativity!

The handguns we have are airsoft toys, mainly for the Battlestar Galactica costumes - your handgun tutorial would suit their shape - now to find some cheesy spaceship material....

This is hilarious and led to a humorous conversation between my boyfriend and I.
"It's cute and the fabric is cute but I still don't understand why you'd need a handgun..."
"Because you're in America!"

I'm scared of guns myself but I like how you made it your own thing.

Weapons should not be glamorized.

Of course many weapons are already so cool they don't need any help in the glamour department, but this cosy is still cute anyway.

The Glock is my dream firearm.  This cozy is awesome and full of irony.  I grew up in a house where there were guns but we were taught from a very young age that they were to be respected and we were taught how to use them.  When I was little I thought it was because with 3 daughters my daddy needed to do 'boy stuff' (we also learned how to change flats and oil, and I even rebuilt a motor with my dad)  but as a 31 year old woman I realize he didn't want to raise helpless girls and I cannot express enough thanks to him for that.

You did an absolute awesome job with this.

Awesome!  It's totally a "steel fist in velvet glove" thing!

Great job incorporating the open slide with gun lock feature.  I don't know whether you meant to make some historical reference, but the mother of pearl snaps are a nice nod to the old fashioned mother of pearl handled pistols of yore.  Rick-rack!  Ha!

This strikes me as so odd and strange. Certainly this is a cozy with irony. Well constructed and totally appropriate for the shape.

Having said that, I would be arrested for carrying that thing around (thank God... IMHO) and Aussies are apathetic towards most things (especially overt patriotism) so this cover would totally not work here even if it cosied something less illegal!

It's an interesting cultural insight for a non-American.

Also, are there implications for the effectiveness of the fabric saying 'America' when it's a huge continent (or two) and I guess guns aren't legal in the whole area?

I want one for my gun.  ;D

You should sell on etsy.  ;) Or is that stuff not allowed there? I don't know the rules.

I go to the range as well ... (I don't hunt ... just like to shoot fake targets for stress relief). But, oh, the interest this would spark! You have to come back and let us know what the response was. Or did you already do that, and I missed it somewhere in these 8 pages?

I'd like to know how it went over at the range, as well! :)

My thoughts exactly.

This is so well constructed and designed, but as a Brit my first thoughts were 'OMG that's a gun!' :D

Absolutely terrifying to me I'm afraid (here in London it wouldn't go down well) but fabric from a "reuse-recycle area" at the dump sounds truly brilliant - wish we had that here.

For those of you who are scared of guns don't be.

I can't speak for the other posters on this topic (or even other non-US Craftsters) but I wasn't saying I found guns terrifying; I was saying that was my feeling about the cozy itself. I do however love the fabric!

The handguns we have are airsoft toys, mainly for the Battlestar Galactica costumes - your handgun tutorial would suit their shape - now to find some cheesy spaceship material....

Wow... this is hilarious because I considered making a gun cozy for this challenge.  Not because I'm a gun-owner, but because of a long-running joke between me and my boyfriend.  In a town near us, there's a building that contains both a yarn store, and a gun store.  Dan, who knits, said that he should go buy a gun, then buy some yarn to knit a holster.  I replied that if it's made of yarn, it's not a holster, it's a cozy.

Nice job.  :)

I absolutely adore this!  The fabric is so awesome, and is really funny because of the phrase.  It cracked me up when someone said that in her mind, all Americans have guns like this :D.

And kudos to your dad.  I work in a popular higher-end bar district, and it's almost a rule that every girl gets escorted to her car.  Eventually, I'd like to get a gun (I don't want to wait for an escort to go grocery shopping! >:(), but I finally got a tiny stun-gun.  It doesn't hurt much, but it looks scary when you push the button!

I'm really inspired to make a cozy for it now so it doesn't get so beat up in my purse.  Hmmm....

 Hello Craftsters!
I just joined this board so that I could tell you all how much I have laughed and enjoyed this awesome craft and the comments.  There is a link to this page on one of my hunting boards.  I am one of the big white crazy gun guys you were referring to.  (Not really crazy, just very enthusiastic!)  You gals are definitely cool.  I would be happy to trace a template for anyone who wants one for just dang near any gun type you can think of.  Just "shoot" me an e-mail at: hoosierbuck (at) comcast.net   :)

Take care-

Hi again-
Just wanted to point out that I would advise against long term storage of your firearms in fabric not treated with rust inhibiting agents.  Anything that could draw or hold moisture against the surface of the firearm is a potential rust bomb waiting to go off.  Point two is that you might consider whether you want to store a firearm owned for home or personal protection in anything that significantly impedes it's deployment for its intended purpose.
Thanks-
HB

2 things:

-I have buttons that match that fabric!  They just have the apple and the "I Like You" on them though, not the America part.  Perhaps there was a whole line of "I Like You America" fabric and notions at one time.

-Once I was at JoAnn's buying flannel to use for cloth menstrual pads.  The person at the cutting table always asks what you're going to make from whatever fabric you're buying.  In this case, I didn't really feel like saying, so I just looked at her with a completely straight face and said, "a gun cozy."  That was the end of that!  Funny that someone actually made one :)

And LOL, I think telling her your true project might have been a conversation killer as well. That's a great project though, and one I've been meaning to start myself. Sort of a "take back the rag" kind of movement, eh?  ;D

If it was up to me, you'd be winning this purely on the fact that you actually understand what the word 'irony' means.

I'm a Brit, so I'm totally scared by the fact that it's a gun, but hey, it's a different culture you live in and I respect that.

I absolutely love this. And I love the fact that you're a woman with a gun. I wish more women would just have the experience of shooting a gun, and maybe they wouldn't be so afraid of them. I find it an amazing past time, but of course that all due to my dad being big into target shooting and such. Anyways, rock on and way to rock the "irony cozy".

Love it. I also have a Glock 19 and I totally want your cozy. I hate that all of my gear is black or camo, so I covered my ear protection in rinestones and sold a few other sets. PM me if you want to do a gun-related craft swap! I love that it says "I like you America"- kind of a tepid remark. My (gun-toting) bf and I joke that more slogans should be less committal- for example, the one for our neighborhood, which is in a bit of a resurgence- should be "Maplewood- we're trying really hard." Great job.

I have been a happy Glock 9mm owner for ten years, but I need to get back out to the range.

Thanks so much for the pattern. So, does anyone else out on Craftster know where I can find a fabric with the Bill of Rights printed on it?  That's what I want to make my cozy out of, and I might make one for my hubby's Sig Sauer, too!

Keep up the great crafting! ;D

Maybe you could get some printable fabric (or use freezer paper ironed to some fabric and put it through the printer?) and print it out on your own. You would have more control over the look of the fabric... you could highlight certain words using color or bold print...

This is TOO funny!  Great creative mind!  I did not realize how much my hubby has influenced my thinking until I saw this pic.  Before I married him, I had never shot a gun, didnt own a permit and had never really given guns a second thought, but now 7 years later, armed and with a permit, I saw the pic and I first thought "oh no, that gun is no good if the clip is not in it"...then I thought it'd be nice if you added a pocket on the cosy for storing an EXTRA clip (for reloading in an emergency)...LOL...AND I worried about the color of the rick rack making folks tease you on the range (as if they wouldnt mind that it is rick rack, just the color would bother them)...I'm so SILLY!!!...but seriously, I think it's TOTALLY CUTE!!!  I've thought about designing my own holster and carving a design out of the leather, but I'd never thought of making one out of fabric until now!  You've really made the "wheels start to turn"!!!

Thanks so much for sharing your creativity in this challenge!
I LIKE AMERICA, TOO!!!!!!

You have won my heart with this.

I can't legaly own a gun because of "mental illness", but I'm fine with that.

I had never fired a gun until last year, I was having a terrible day and my good friend took me to his grandparent's house to shoot bbs at the shed.

I cheered up instantly.

So, I'm perfectly fine not owning a gun.

But this cozie is CRAZY!

Haha, good job!

I'm not going to get into the whole 2nd ammendment debate other than to say that actually, you can get the guns themselves "dressed up" & get a custom hot pink handle if you want.  I don't think the cozy is any different from that & I don't think it glamorizes guns.  Does a teapot cozy glamorize a teapot?  The cozy serves a purpose.  Frankly, a lot of the items to hold/protect guns are geared toward men (and plain black) so I think it's nice to see something crafted around it.  I'm sure you keep the gun safely & away from children - ours are in a locked safe.  There are also trigger locks.  There is also the concept of teaching children (if you have any) that guns are not a toy.  But it's interesting that some people, no matter what, will assume you have a gun lying around easily accessible to children & don't teach them any differently.

It's only too bad you have to be a famous politician or actor to get approved for a concealed handgun license in California.  Otherwise, I would say there are purses out there where you can conceal a gun for your Constitutionally protected right (I like America too!) to defend yourself.  Ironically, I bought one from a vendor in California.  Hmm, in fact, maybe I'll save some deer skin from hunting this year & make myself a concealed handgun purse!  Most of the ones out there are ugly or expensive, so it would be nice to have a variety.  Thanks for the inspiration!  And good job on the cozy!

<--------- Licensed firearms instructor.
A) This rocks so hard.  Sometimes when I'm darting out the door and throwing a bunch of handguns in a bag to teach class I wish something was wrapped around them.  I often take my silicone embedded cloths and wrap them.  I could take each one of them in their individual cases but I'm just one girl and that's a LOT of cases so I'll generally snug 10-12 of them in one range bag.  This would be perfect for that!
B) The fabric is so freekin' fantastic.
C) Very well made.  You do excellent work!
D) I'd like to take a moment to invite all you gals who are "scared of guns" out to a class where you handle EMPTY guns with no ammo in the room.  It's a hunk of steel and polymer.  The fact that a picture on the internet makes you squeeze your butt cheeks together only tells me you need some proper education. (:   It's also a sport ya know!

Thanks for bringing this post up again. It's funny what a few years and good people will do for you <3

That's the cutest thing I have seen in ages, and unbelievable too. :) Clothes for a gun is a fancy concept for sure.
