Title: Glass Picture Marble Bracelet
Post by: leah on August 15, 2003 05:07:42 PM

These bracelets were made with flat, clear, glass marbles that you can find in the floral section of a craft store.  They are really easy to make and the marbles provide this cool magnifying effect on the picture you put behind it.

before

after

What you do is this:
  • Buy a bunch of clear, flat, glass marbles.
  • Cut out some interesting images as 1/2" circles. I used old comic books for the bracelets above. If you plan on making lots of these, you can buy a 1/2" circle hole punch at a craft store and just punch out the images.
  • Apply a little glue to the back of the marble and press the image against the back of the marble.  I use "Gem-Tac" glue because it's decribed as glue for attaching "gems" to fabric.  Anything from a craft store like this should work fine.
  • When the glue dries, I then glue on a 1/2" circle that I cut out of vellum to the back of the image to protect the picture from the next thing you'll glue it to.
  • Now you just need to decide what to glue your picture marbles to.  You can use small circular magnets, or a blank bracelet form, or a barrette, or whatever.  I use a really strong glue, namely E-6000 (available at a hardware store or craft store) for this stage so that marble is sure to stay attached.

Blank bracelet forms like this can be found at Rings & Things http://www.rings-things.com,  Ornamental Resources http://www.ornabead.com, etc. you can check the jewelry findings section at your local craft store for similar components.  I buy mine at Ornamental Resources.

I love this idea so much that I had to go out immediately and get supplies. Couldn't find any bracelet forms so I made barrettes.
The images I used were from a Japanese Doraemon paper craft book. It was thick paper so I didn't back them with anything. I think it would look nicer if I covered the bare barrette in ribbon before attaching the marbles. I'll probably do that next time.

That is such a cute idea!  I've seen these in boutiques for a ton of money except sometimes the designs are kinda old fashioned, patriotic themes and what not.  Have you tried this with rings yet?  Just wondering.

free web hosts like geocities, tripod and the like don't allow hotlinking (hosting a pix on one server and trying to bring it up elsewhere because of bandwidth issues) so I imagine Yahoo albums is the same way.

interesting! I didn't know that those free webhosting sites didn't allow that.

artzy, do you want an upload directory on craftster.org? if so, check the FAQ for details.

I'd loooove to see these and the gummi bear bracelet too!

(sorry I didn't mention this sooner, I thought maybe I was the only one who couldn't see your pictures!)

All the marble goodies you've posted are great. I've made the magnets which I love, but I am dying to find the blank bracelet forms. I bought some from rings n things, but the disks are so tiny. There is 11 of them on each bracelet.  So, the marbles are way too big.  To make a long story short, where on earth did you find the blank forms the right size? Do you know of another online retailer aside from rings n things I can try?

Try Artchix Studio, under "art bits"

http://www.artchixstudio.com/mall/abimage5.asp

or MantoFev under "metal"

http://www.mantofev.com/metal5.html

I need to make some of these.....whenever I can get a job and buy more crafty stuff, that is!  :-\

Hi I am new here, just stumbled across this board while looking for ideas for the picture bracelets. I had ordered mine from http://klutz.com/catalog/product.php?itemNo=2325&cat=5
they arrived and look great, except I didn't realize they were refills for a kit that came with a book of stamps and two bracelets with droplets. So I had to try to find out what kind of glue to use. Wow, was I surprised to find all the info and pictures here.
Thanks you they all look great! I'll post mine as soon as I get them togetherCarol

I love it!  I couldn't find bracelet forms, so I made a bunch of magnets.  My fridge has never looked so good!

I'm thinking about making a lot more of these for friends.  Where can I find a 1/2" hole punch?

You can find 1/2"circle punches in the scrapbook section of craft stores like Michael's -- they have all sizes of circles, though sometimes you have to sift through the zillions of other shapes to find them.

Title: Re:Glass Picture Marble Bracelet
Post by: lilcarol on October 01, 2003 04:35:25 AM
The droplets look like glass, and I swore they were, but (don't tell my dentist) hitting they against my teeth I think they are plastic. I took the pictures with my digital camera. But you could scan any picture, then resize. I used Paint Shop Pro, but I'm sure you could do the same in any publishing program also. Just remember when you think you have it small enough, make it a little smaller. The droplet magnifies it. I put a couple different sizes of each picture per printed page, then I had my choice of which one looked best. The best I can describe them is just tiny bit larger than a baby asprin. I am going by the size of the droplets that come with the Klutz bracelets. Some of the ones I saw at Michaels were a little bigger. I couldn't find any bracelet blanks there just the droplets and they were glass.
Shipping was $5.00. I think I will order 2 sets next time sometimes the shipping is the same as they are not very heavy and are just shipped in a heavy envelope.
Good luck and enjoy, I just loved the way they turned out. I gave my daughter hers yesterday for her birthday. It was her baby in the pictures he is ten wks old. She was so impressed with it. As she had never seen anything like it.
It is always so much fun to make something that has not quite become a fad yet.

Bracelet looks great!!  I went to the site, but couldn't find the length of it posted.  Is it just the standard length of like 7.5"?

**Edit** : Oh, and one more question, anyone know where I can find those 'droplets' to buy?  I know I can use the glass marbles, but I was hoping to find more of thos plastic droplet thingies just by themselves (sometimes I don't need the whole kit!)

Thanks!

From end to end they are 8 " . I checked at Michaels, the only thing I could find were the glass marbles. They had others in the jewelry findings dept, but they were like clear rhinestones with a silver backing. They were flat, but you wouldn't be able to see a picture through them.

I feel soo ripped off!  About a year ago, I was in a store and there was a kit to make marble magnets!  I got and now feel stupid for buying a kit when I could easily make one myself!  I'm gonna dig up the kit though, to make some magnets for my pals.

Hi guys,
I just whipped this bracelet out last night.
I didn't have time to wait for the bracelet blank to come in the mail (had to mail the bracelet to my grandma for Christmas), so I made it with ribbon instead.  I made a button and loop closure, and just glued the ribbon to the backs of the marbles, and then glued felt on top of that.  I used pictures of my grandma's 6 grandkids, for an extra sentimental present.  I'm also making the marble magnets with pictures of the appropriate kids for my mom and each of my aunts.  Anyway, here's the completed bracelet:

If anyone bought the smaller bracelet blanks from Rings & Things, here's an idea for using the larger glass drops.  I followed the directions, but I only put six drops on the bracelet and filled in the last five blanks with sequins.

You can pick up the theme of your bracelet.  For example, I used red and blue sequins with gold stars for the wonder woman comic bracelet.
You could also add rhinestones, beads, or little buttons.

By the way, I'm new here.  This rocks, I've already started three new projects inspired by this site.  Yay!

Hi! Brand-new. Wanted to say that I am totally floored by creative genius exhibited by the people on this board.

Also, if you get pictures developed at Wal-Mart, you can buy an index print of them for 96 cents extra. The pictures are shrunk down just perfectly for marble magnets and other wonderful marble tidbits.  :)

Seeing your cute jewellry (sp?) ideas, I think I might use my little bottle cap thingies to make some! Yay! ;D

i've made necklaces, rings, barrets, and i'm waiting for my order of bolo slides to come in to make the bracelets.

for the necklaces, i just bought some figure eights and regular circle closures from the jewelry dept. after gluing the image you want, put a glob of the glue and put something sturdy on that. i'm using the covers of magezines and the purfume ads because they're made with thick paper. then get one figure eight and slide that between the just applied paper and the marble with the image attached. let that dry and then attach the regular circle and then put on your necklace.

next, i'll be trying it with ribbon. i haven't yet, so i'll see, but just glue one or two or however many you want of the marbles with the images to ribbon. then just some type of closure (velcro, snap, etc)

I am so frustrated!!! I've been looking for the braclette settings for months now and the only place I can find them is on-line, but that doesn't work for me because I don't have a credit card. hot-bettie58, if you can pay with a check or money order instead, you can order from http://www.rings-things.com -- just call them on the phone instead of using the shopping cart (besides the cart on their site is all wonky anyhow).

I haven't had any luck finding blank bracelets, either, but bolo slides should be easy: any place you can get  jewelry findings ought to carry bolos---bead shops, craft stores, etc.  I recently bought several packages of four that weren't more than a couple of dollars each.  The only problem now is finding big enough jump rings; I may end up having to make my own....

I see in your photo that you chose to glue the glass beads directly onto chain rather than use the bracelet blank form.  Have the beads stayed on well?  I like the look of the chain better than the blank version.

I finally made one of these a couple of weeks ago using bolo slides and jump rings.  The metal is now starting to show through my catalog images.  Could I have put on too much glue?  (I used E6000.  While making marble magnets, I used a different acrylic glue, but it appeared a little too cloudy, but haven't had any problem w/metal showing through.)

i found these awesome Disc Charms:  http://www.mantofev.com/charms6.html (http://www.mantofev.com/charms6.html) 1 and 1/8th across including the loopies on the side. 80 cents each! sorry i didn't know how to inset a picture of them, and i didn't want to "steal" the pictures from her website, so you may have to scroll down.   (from www.mantofev.com  (http://www.mantofev.com)).
I only bought one to "test" if my glass marbles would fit onto it--and it's a perfect match, so now i have to go  order more. you'd have to loop them together to make a bracelet or necklace...but it's just a suggestion, something different, i guess.

This is the bracelet I made from the disc charms i mentioned in my last post (i quoted it below,  in case you missed it. hee.hee.)

It's a picture of a rooster--i love those guys, we have chickens and roosters that roam our neighborhood, and i can't get enough of 'em (oh, and i live in the mountains of hawaii, so it's a little more "normal" to see chickens and such).

i posted before i finished the above post about the disc charm rooster bracelet. anyway, i just glued the image on the flat glass marble, then glued that to the disc charm. i then just strung some random brown glass beads on to embroidery floss that i'd tied to the disc. easy! and i love it!

You can use bolo tie clips for these bracelets.  You hook them together with large o rings.  I have a ton of these that I am not using, so if you want some, email me and let me know.  I'm happy to share!!!

Oh man, I hope this post makes it to where I want it to go.  Took me forever to figure this site out, and I'm no newbie.  But I gotta say, though, that this is a great site and unbelievably positive!  I haven't seen any flaming going on here, which is an absolute miracle!

Anyway, on the subject of marble magnets (right place, I hope), I have a question.  I got hooked on these recently, have made tons, and am planning on selling them at craft shows, along with my handcrafted jewelry.  So far I've used generic-type pictures for the marbles, but I would like to make a kids line with some of the popular cartoon characters.  But I'm wondering if there would be any problem with copyright infringement or anything like that?

Appreciate any help with this.

Thanks.

Title: COPYRIGHT INFO... Re: Glass Picture Marble Bracelet
Post by: carlyleech on October 01, 2004 04:22:33 PM
well... i'm no expert on this, but when i was an undergraduate in college (i'm an elementary ed teacher), they explained some copyright stuff to us concerning what we can use in the classroom.  it is illegal to draw established cartoon characters (like Mickey Mouse, for example), even if you're not selling the drawings.  if you make something out of something you've bought (like Mickey Mouse on fabric or on paper), it's okay because you paid for the item.  HOWEVER, i'm not sure about selling your finished product!  do you have an actual business?  because if you have a business license it might be a bigger deal than just selling stuff at a small craft sale or out of your house.

I was inspired so by this thread I bought some of the bracelet blanks from Klutz. I was especially happy that because of the way the marble (or in this case, plastic drop) refracts the light the ragged edges of my tiny pictures are completely obscured. So, being a geek I made a geeky bracelet - a Santiago Ramon y Cajal bracelet! ( you can read about him here if you're curious - http://nobelprize.org/medicine/articles/cajal/) I just found the images through google image search, used photoshop to make the dimensions smaller but keep the resolution,  printed them out and cut them down to size. I used super glue to attach everything to the blank. Now I have superglue all over my thumbs.    :(

Hahaha... killing and marrying have a similar significance to you?  I have seen these hole-punches in my hometown (in MN), but it was not a corporate chain.  :-\  However, although I have not tried it myself, I read on this thread (or a similar one) that they actually don't work very well if you are using normal glass gems because they are irregular, and you have to trim the circles anyway.  But if you have plastic gems that are very uniform, they might work fine!!!  I'll post again if I locate a punch online... sorry I was not really that helpful!    ::)

Hi! I just made my first marble pendant this weekend (well, I used TAP Plastic cabochons). I glued felt on the back, and it works, but....it doesn't look very polished. ANyone have any recommendations on a better backing? Something sturdy but "professional" looking. I love felt, but it sort of has that "homemade" look to it and I want to give these out as gifts.

Or does anyone know of any findings that could be used as the backing for a plastic cabochon? (3/4 inch)

Thanks!

In the August 2004 issue of Bead & Button they have directions for backing a cabochon with Ultrasuede.  That may be what you're looking for.  Also, they surround the cab with a few rows of even-count circular peyote stitch with seed beads, and it looks really nice.  I can maybe post a pic when I get my dig cam all in order.  Anyone looking for more info. on directions can PM me so I don't fill up the board!

(p.s. This is my first message- eep!- so I don't really know what PM means, I've just seen it in reference, but I"m assuming it means Private Message...)

I couldn't get hold of any braclet thingy to glue my marbles to, so I just glued them onto thin wire, and glued a pice of fabric to the back. it's not as professional-looking, but it is much cheaper  ;D

This is how the finished braclet came out:

**Edit** : Oh, and one more question, anyone know where I can find those 'droplets' to buy?  I know I can use the glass marbles, but I was hoping to find more of thos plastic droplet thingies just by themselves (sometimes I don't need the whole kit!)

they have got some the same or at least similar at artchixstudio.com.  They're called 'clear page pebbles' and they've got them in different shapes and sizes.

OK I have  ideas for those of us who can't find the bracelet findings and/or don't feel like ordering them online...

*FOR A PENDANT: make it 2-sided! Take 2 marbles and 2 pictures, glue them back to back with an eyepin between them... then fill the "valley" between them with glue then sprinkle glitter on it for a finished look...

*FOR SLIDER BEADS: Glue the marble on top of a thin disk bead

FOR A "LINK": Sandwich an eyepin(with ends sticking out) between the marble and a coin (penny?), and make a loop in the other end of the eyepin to finish

Off to try it, will post pics of my attempts...

hey! :o  To original poster and everyone else!!!!!

 1) what glue do u use (I heard Weldbond is the best- not as fumy)  and also, 2)  I've been using super glue (bad idea, eh?) All it does is glue the glass marble to the magnet but it makes the pic come out blurred (ink runs) and sucky!  Any suggestions?  Does the glue u use not make the ink run/keeps it clear?

One more thing....Where do you get the clear glass marbles?  I could only find the ones that are clear "lustre" (so the pic has a slight "glare"/irridescent shine and I don't want that!)  Help please!

Thanks!!!! :D

Glue:  E6000   - It's really thick and the pictures only run (sometimes) if they are printed off a computer.  But I only had a few printed ones run; the rest were fine.  And I bought clear glass marbles at Wal-Mart!

I just used one of the bracelet forms that has space for glueing 11 things. There isn't enough room to put a marble on each, but you can glue on rhinestones or beads like I did. I like that it adds detail and variation between bracelets. ( FYI I got them from ebay seller "mygemsetc" and was really pleased with the price and the whole transaction)

Hey guys,

I'm from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Went to micheal's craft store (which is the only craft store in my area that I know of) and I could not find the  E-6000 glue. Any other brand/kind that would work just as well?

Thanks guys ;D

I love working with those flat marbles!  I've been slowly building a collection of them with all sorts of little images on the back... the plan is to turn them into a larger image with tons of little points of color that you can walk up to to see a whole other image inside.

I might have to sacrifice a few to make some jewelry while i'm waiting on the larger image.
I wonder what else you could use those for...

Walmart carries E-6000, too, both in hardware and in crafts. Hobby Lobby carries it in their jewelry findings.

yup, but E-6000, you have to be 18 years or older to buy it...or at least, when i tried to buy it, the lady wouldnt sell it to me because i'm 17 and she said you have to be 18 or older. ugh.

hopefully someone knows the answer to this,
but rings & things accepts cash, right?

Hello All....
So I read all the posts on this topic but I'm still a bit confused.
I just received my order from Rings & Things and am a little disappointed that I won't be able to put a marble onto each blank because there isn't enough room on the bracelet.  I saw a post where someone suggested placing different goodies on every other blank...thinking of doing that. But I also looking for :

-Bolo Ties
-Rings big enough to coordinate with the bolo ties.
-Glass Marbles besides the ones Michael's sells

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Here's a site that might be useful..The page pebbles and links to make things. There's a lot of other interseting  things on there too.

I've seen the page pebbles in scrapbooking sections of craft stores also.

don't know about the bolo ties or the second thing, BUT walmart sells the flat marbles a huge bag of them for only $3 (tiny ones). ben franklin's has the same ones, more expensive and they also have slightly bigger ones. i got some today & they were 3 for 10 cents. THEN, i went to the dollar tree and accidentally stumbled on large marbles! i was soooo excited! and guess what, they were only a dollar!!!   ;D

I assume that your "blanks" are rings with empty setting?  I had the same problem when I was trying to make my Nana a "cocktail ring" that none of her other cronies would have I ended up going to a bead store and they had these AWESOME beads with only one hole. So I made little jump ring/blunted needle type things and glued the one eyed beads to the Jumpring/Blunts and then used wood putty in the "blanks" and stuck the jump rings on some mesh and squished the mesh into the putty,

VERY time consuming but a wiggly-gigly eyecatching and very unique ring that my naner bears wears EVERYWHERE.  Her friends all want ones but she told them She didn't remember where she got it... :-\

If they are too big, you can remove one or more of the links to make them fit.

Ok, I don't know if this has come up at all, but I've been making these bracelets using polymer clay as a backing to the marble. You just make a little disk out of clay (I roll a little ball and then smash it flat with the marble.) And bake it with two eye pins inserted on either side.

Once it's baked, just pull out the pins, dip them in superglue or some sort of metal glue, and then stick them back in to the clay disk. Glue the picture marble on top, and then hook them all together with jump rings.

E6000 is in all the crafting stores (Hobby Lobby has it in their jewelry section) and Walmart has it in both crafts and hardware deoartments. It comes in a tube, sometimes attached to a card and sometimes not.

OK, so I have finally read through ALL of the posts, there are SOOO many places to buy these bracelets, but some DONT look like the end result, how is that possible!

I Cant find ANYTHING on Ornamental Resources website at ALL...(it's confusing, What exactly do I look under? title) I found stuff on the Klutz website, I just want to make sure I know what I'm getting.

I am planning on making a bunch of bracelets for Christmas, so BULK is what I need. Anyone else ordered bulk & got a great price?

Do you glue the marbles with E6000 right into the metal forms?

I totally love these & have been looking for the braclets for MONTHS! I hope I can find them for a good price SOON!

THANKS!

I second the question about photo sizing....did you shrink your comic photos?  If so, how do you know what size to go to, and did you print them on photo paper or regular?  Thanks!!

Are the bracelets from Klutz any good or to they seem cheap?  I'd like to make a few for gifts this Christmas, but I'm undecided between the Klutz ones and these  http://www.marketworks.com/StoreFrontProfiles/DeluxeSFItemDetail.aspx?sfid=77928&c=495893&i=11996008      I don't know which would be better quality.  The klutz ones are cheaper in price

Title: Re: Glass Picture Marble Bracelet
Post by: craftADDchick on December 03, 2006 08:40:31 AM
I have some Klutz ones...I bought the refill kit online and it came with 4 bracelets that have 6 discs each. The thing that makes them on the cheap side, I think, is the fact that the little flat "marble" pieces are plastic, not glass. They do fit in the bracelets perfectly, though.

But, of course, you could subsititue the flat glass "marbles" instead! I also bought the book (which comes with 2 bracelet blanks) and I'm giving my friend's 3 daughters the book with an extra bracelet and all of the little plastic circles that came in the refill kit (plus some flat glue dots). I figure that, if they want, they can change the look of the bracelet because they'll have extra parts.

Hope this helps!

So the smaller glass marbles fit the klutz ones?  I have some small ones that I got from either the dollar store or walmart that I was going to use if I bought the other bracelets (that is if they'll even fit -i'm so bad at figuring out sizes).

Title: Re: Glass Picture Marble Bracelet
Post by: craftADDchick on December 03, 2006 04:10:33 PM
The smaller glass marbles are not perfectly round, so they don't really fit anything perfectly. I think they sort of rest on the rim of the round flat part. You could try to pick out the roundest ones and go with those.

If you do get the Klutz ones and the glass ones don't fit the way you want them to, at least you'll have a bunch of plastic pieces that do fit!

Did y'all know... you can make these bracelet forms yourself using extra large jump rings and bolo tie slides?  Works just fine.  I wait until jewelry findings are 1/2 price at whatever large scale craft store (usually Hobby Lobby) is in my area and then buy a whole bunch of them at once.

OK, I'm new here and this is my first post, so if I'm doing anything wrong, I apologize. I stumbled across this thread researching how to make jewelry out of the glass marbles. You all have given me some wonderful ideas -- thank you. But I have looked and looked and can't find a place to get the little cups that you use to make a pendant. I believe they're called bezels? I've found bails with flat discs that you can glue the marbles to but I'm looking for the round ones with sides, sometimes scalloped, that wrap around the marble. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I found some clear ones at Michael's in the floral department.  I, however, buy them at the Dollar Tree (by the floral stuff as well).  The quality isn't as great, but it's still worth it.
