Title: Rainbow Patchwork Skirt
Post by: Crafty Intentions on July 27, 2008 10:13:33 AM

Hello!

I hope you enjoy photos of my floor-length patchwork skirt.  This took me at least 5 months to make.  There are 10 tiers of 4x4 inch square patches.  Each successive tier is 1.5 times as long as the next one.  The bottom one I ruffled a little bit more than the previous tiers and has a total of 520 squares.  The waist is a "drawstring" where the "string" is a 1.5 inch belt that can be pulled tight around ANY size waist up to 50 inches.

These photos are NOT me.  These are photos of a good friend of mine who volunteered to model this skirt for me.  Isn't she sooo preeetty?

The order of the colors is as follows:

Waist: White
Tier 1: Lilac
Tier 2: Purple
Tier 3: Pink
Tier 4: Orange
Tier 5: Yellow
Tier 6: Light Green
Tier 7: Dark Green
Tier 8: Light Blue
Tier 9: Dark Blue
Tier 10: Blue-Green

I cut out ALL of the squares first. Then I (machine) straight stitched all of the individual rows together. Then I ruffled all of the rows. Then I sewed each row to the next. Then I straight stitched vertically to sew the skirt into a circle. Then I added the waist, and sewed the waist belt/draw string.

I won't go into details, but I was showing some people this skirt and their first reaction was to ridicule it. It hurt very much, and I've felt bittersweet about my accomplishment ever since.  This is the first skirt I've ever made from scratch.  I have decorated skirts before and created built-in petticoats, but this is different and I was so proud of this until it was mocked by people I love.  I'm not sure how I feel about it now.  I'm torn between pride, awe at what I did, and shame because - was it worth it? Is it actually as cool as I thought it was? Did I just spend an inordinate amount of time on something completely impracticle? *sigh*

I post these photos as a declaration that I worked hard and finished something intricate.  I believe it to be beautiful and I am proud.

Thank you for looking. I really appreciate it.

UPDATE:

It's hard to express to you all, the uplifting yet heavy sort of joy I've been experiencing as you have come here to comment.  It's been a heady sort of wonder.

I still feel the sting of the criticism.  I am not the type of person to sit there and allow someone to speak cruel or undeserved criticism to someone - let alone allow someone to do so to myself, without giving some sort of snarky or sassy response.  But I did just sit there. And I find it hard to forgive myself, and I find it hard to feel at ease with these people.  I am beginning to let it go.

I have found your responses (and I have read ALL of them and will continue to do so) overwhelmingly kind and touching.  This thread has been both encouraging and bolstering.  I feel surrounded by hundreds of kindred spirits in a crafty sisterhood.  I am inspired to do more work of this nature and will be posting new topics on new skirts in the near future - I promise.

I wish I could give every single one of you a hug - as you have done the same, emotionally, for me.

Thank you. And I wish you all Deliriously Happy Crafting.

UPDATE:

preg_replace('/(.{49})/', '$1 ', 'AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH')!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT'S ON CRAFTZINE!!!!

Don't let scoffers tarnish your labor of love! That skirt is fantastic, and such a huge amount of work! And, frankly, does everything in this world have to be practical? I believe there is room in the world for the strictly beautiful.
Keep at it, and congratulations on completing this gorgeous project.

This is beautiful. Beautiful. Don't listen to people who laugh. What do they know? This is possibly the most gorgeous patchwork skirt I've ever seen! I may have to copy you. Maybe more than once. So thank you for making the list of colors. It would have taken me hours. *sheepish grin* This is a beautiful skirt, keep it up!

I think the skirt is absolutely beautiful. I would wear it anywhere (I <3 long skirts). Don't let the negative comments get to you... My family pokes fun at just about every craft item I make. People who don't make things by hand just don't get it...
If you enjoyed working on it (which you must have in order to dedicate 5 months), then that's all that matters. It was a fun project to do and as it turns out, you ended up with a gorgeous skirt - Great job! :)

I can't believe you would doubt yourself, or the value of your accomplishment! Any seamstress would gasp at the amount of labor and skill that went into making that skirt. You know what my favorite thing about it is? How formal it looks! I never thought that a patchwork skirt could look so... well, classy. Especially the pictures of your model sitting in it... she looks as though she could be at a ball waiting to be asked to dance.

It's a work of art. Don't let the naysayers get you down. There will always be people in your life who may not understand that sometimes just accomplishing a goal and making something from nothing (you made a gorgeous garment from little squares of fabric! That's like magic!) is an end in itself. Next time they give you grief about something you're proud of, just smile to yourself because you know a joy of creation they can't understand.

This is quite possibly the most gorgeous thing I've seen in ages.  Your loved ones are silly and should be beaten with some sense for mocking this.  The creation of something like this is (in my admittedly young opinion) akin to giving birth to a child.  It is just as worthy of labor.

Post by: craftewoman on July 27, 2008 10:36:10 AM
That is a magnificent piece of art! Congratulations on five months of labor. Juts think, since it's rainbow, you could wear it with any color of blouse. That makes it very practical in my eyes! Your model looks like she's ready to go do some dancing. I suggest you put on the skirt and some lively music and do the same.
Did you know that the impressionist artists were scoffed at too? Look at how much people enjoy their art today! When you put your heart into something, it's never a waste of time!

It IS beautiful, and you have the patience of a saint!  One thing I've learned about being an individual is that there are lots of people who aren't, and they are terrified of anything outside their squares.  Their ridicule doesn't come from a true and accurate judgment of your work, it comes from their inability to appreciate the wild and wonderful.  Which is exactly what this skirt is!  Bravo, and keep your chin waaaaay up!

This is absolutely gorgeous. I wish I had one! I can't believe people said bad things about it. I saw it on the front page and got so excited. The colors are lovely and the work that must have gone into it is so well worth it. I LOVE it! Breathtaking. I would totally wear it all the time. I can't get over the wonderful colors and fabrics you've chosen. You should be so proud! Especially because some people (including myself, which makes me even more in awe) can't make their own clothes at all.

Title: Re: Rainbow Patchwork Skirt
Post by: Muria on July 27, 2008 10:58:56 AM
It's in my favorites now, so obviously, I think it's great!!   If they are people who do not craft, then what they have to say about crafting is necessarily from an uninformed point of view. Take it for what it's worth, compared to all the opinions of people who craft that have commented here.

I do know that it hurts when someone says, "why did you make that?" especially if you've spent a long time working on it, but if it makes you happy, then it is worth  the effort, even if you are the only one to appreciate it (and clearly, you're not).

I think this skirt would also be awesome in graduate shades of one color (light to dark blue), or graduations between shades (green to blue to purple, say).

Congratulations on finishing a major undertaking!

That skirt is stunning! I love patchwork skirts, and yours is truly a work of art! The colours, the ruffle, the beautiful fullness - it is hippy couture!
Don't allow anyone to make you think it was a fruitless labour - you created an original masterpiece which may be misunderstood by people who shop at the GAP.
I personally will be clicking THIS ROCKS because not only do I love the skirt, but I can appreciate the love and hours of labour that went into its creation - I wish I had the patience for such a project!

"Rainbow Patchwork Skirt"  is not a good enough caption for your project...it should have been  "Amazing, intricate, beautiful, colorful, custom made, floor length, lovely, stylish,  (on and  on ) most amazing piece of apparel".  It drapes so nicely, and the colors you put together are so perfect, and the size of the squares, and the number of tiers, and just oh so many things are awesome about your beautiful master piece, that those naysayers don't have any right to comment on your work.  We here are so lucky that you posted this for all of us to see.  We are the lucky ones.  I can just imagine how great it feels when you put this skirt on and twirl about.   Don't let the mean people get you down, just don't even listen to them!

I have been wanting a rainbow-or colorful- patchwork skirt for some time. This must have taken so much time, patience, and funds to complete and you should be so proud! One of my favorite lines from the new "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (johnny depp) movie.. Charlie says "Candy doesn't have to have a point. That's why it's candy." Thank you for sharing this wonderful eye candy for all of us to enjoy!!

take it from me: I absolutley _hate_ rainbow coloured things. I hate brightly mixed colours, and even more so when people try to add them all together. Horrible.

STILL, I find that I love this. So very very much. It's brilliant, it looks really good and I (gasp and and wonder) really feel like making one myself right now. (though this of course I will deny if anyone dares ask me)

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! I would  wear this skirt all days! Quilting is a very nice technique and I would love to make a quilted piece once in my live. I think it 'll be something you've made! Don't listen to the naysayers and grumblers. Your work is georgous! I would wear it. I think it is awsome and the drawstring waist is a great idea. I have a few skirts that I have lost weight and can't wear. I keep planing to add a drawstring to them and remove the old elastic. It's a great idea. Your pictures show how fun it is to wear. Be proud. It is wonderful!

This is BEAUTIFUL.  I saw this on your Flickr the other day, and am so very glad that you put it up on Craftster, if only to receive the accolades you deserve for it.

I am so very jealous, and plan to attempt one of my own (though I doubt I will have the patience to see it through.)  If I may so humbly ask, where did you get the fabric for this?  I know that it would work best with lots of varied fabrics, so I am wary of just walking into a fabric store and buying fabric - did you use quilting square packages, or buy remnants...?

And girl, I'd be wearing it at least once a week when you see them just to prove them wrong. It's gorgeous and you did a super awesome job. You put a lot of hardwork and sweat into making that skirt and I'd be very proud to wear it if I were you.  ;D  And I agree with cookiemaker about to hell with them and the poofy thing or pettiskirt under it.

I know it's an echo of everyone else, but this is AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL.  I saw it and was immediately in awe, and horribly jealous.  I want one.  I want to have the patience to make something so wonderful!  The people who were laughing at this obviously can't see how amazing your creation is, and the amount of time and effort it would take to make it-and don't have the fashion sense to know how bad-ass it really is.

Wow! I Love this skirt. Are you sure the criticisms you recieved weren't in jest? Maybe they were jelous (I know I am). I don't understand why anyone would hate such a beautifull skirt. I don't really like to wear skirts, but I would wear this all the time. I love the drawstring idea as well. I am a yo-yo dieter, and as a result, many of my favorite outfits are usually too big or too small. I would love it if such an awesome piece were to fit me no matter what my weight. I have seen these on here before, and have wanted to make one for a while now. You all seem to find the most perfect fabric for these skirts. Unfortunately, my box of scraps is far less impressive. Did you just have these lying around, or did you go out and buy them? I also like the ruffle at the edge. You should be very proud.

Swishy swirly photo... so all the colours run together...

yeah... I like rainbows.
That is an astonishing amount of work. The people who didn't like it- well, I wouldn't wear it in public, but if you were brave enough it would look awesome. Even if you don't have enough occasions to wear it it's still amazing.

Not everyone thought your skirt was silly - your friend looks like she is having so much fun in it! You did a spectacular job! I hope you have as much fun in it, and yes, take pride in all the (fantastic) work you did :)

Post by: battina on July 27, 2008 02:05:11 PM
during a class critique for an art class i had in college, a fellow student asked me
"so what does it mean? what's the point of it?"
me: "well, it really doesn't mean anything, i just really liked the way it looked"...
her: "well then i don't want to look at it"
me: "well i don't want you to look at it".

moral of the story, if you made it and you like it and are proud of it, flaunt it. it's already amazing because of all the time and effort you put into it. i know how much it hurts when people give you very negative reactions to your work, but try not to let it get to you too much.

and the skirt is beautiful :)

it is a remarkable work of art and the best part is that its wearable! i know what you mean though most people have no idea about how much time, love, and effort goes into making something but that shouldn't concern you. again your skirt is beautiful and dont let anyone make you feel otherwise!

Where are these hurtful people. I think you ought to give them a piece of your mind. If not I'll be happy to do it for you. IF you spent that much time one something the least they could say is "wow that's something else." if they don't like it.

Anyways I admire your skirt because I want one so badly but do not have the patience to make one. I made doll sized ones and about died. You skirt is beautiful and I'd say it is practical. You can wear it so it's practical. And it's beautiful too! Great job!

That is super fab!!!  You did such a fantastic job and should be very proud of your creation.

People who do not craft or create things do not understand how us crafty peeps are.  Alot of time I find that is someone says something negative, it's either they are jealous cause the only thing they can do is boil water ;D or all they have every had in their possession was something they bought at the mall.  They do not understand the handmade aspect to it all.  But rock on, you are so talented!!!

I have a knee-length rainbow patchwork skirt.  People make gay comments to me.  People ask me how old I am to be wearing something like that.  I LOVE MY SKIRT AND NOTHING WILL DETER ME FROM WEARING IT.... EVERYWHERE!  To the point that my hubby asked the other day if I own more than just the skirt  ;)

Wear it with pride.  I know how long mine took to make and yours is easily 1.5 times the amount of fabric and work that mine was!!!

GREAT EFFING JOB!!!!!

i didn't read all the 11(!!!) pages of answers so far, partly because i am sure that they are telling you it's great and don't worry.  i hope you are reassured by now that your skirt is beautiful.  i just wanted to say that i think a long circle skirt is not all that impractical.  if you wear high-heeled or thick-soled shoes with it, you don't even have to worry about it brushing the ground.  i used to have a long circle skirt in high school (mind you this was like in the 80's, but oh well) and i wore it kind of a lot, considering it was a skirt.  and it was not this pretty or amazing, it was just a really cool print.  only reason i don't wear something like that now is i don't have one that fits.  oh well i am sure i have not said anything new, but just wanted to add my opinion.  congratulations on your lovely wearable art.

I can't imagine what was said to make you doubt yourself, but this is something that happens to me all too frequently, to a good lot of us I think. Your skirt is beautiful, practical? Well thatís for you to decide, I can see a lot of people may think no, but that to me is the sort of easy wear skirt I would live in. It goes with everything and makes people smile to see it. Yes it took a long time to make, but how you spend your free time is up to you. You could have spent hours watching tv mindlessly, smoking, drinking, whatever. Try not to let it worry you, some people just donít get it, the joy in making something that others may think is frivolous but we adore.

Enjoy your skirt and wear it with pride.

Be impractical, embrace it. It's more fun!

Title: Re: Rainbow Patchwork Skirt
Post by: subloke on July 27, 2008 06:19:01 PM
I started reading through the 14 pages of replies and they all communicate the same thing:  This is a beautiful, intricate, painstaking piece of art in a wearable form.  When I saw the first pictures I was struck by how formal the skirt appears, but yet so casual at the same time.  Amazing.  Plus, your model looks like she's loving wearing it, which is half the battle!

I'm so sorry to hear that people denigrated your efforts and vision.  As people who make things (crafters/craftsters) I think we all hear these negative "Why did you do THAT???" kinds of criticisms from time to time.  Rather than feeling like we have to justify our art and craftsmanship, we should just answer "Because I wanted to"  or "Because I can.  Can you??"

All that to say, this ROCKS (hit the button) and you should be proud.

There are two things that I normally don't like... bright rainbow colors all put together and patchwork skirts (although I love patchwork quilts). But, when I looked at this and I was just awe struck. Not only is it just gorgeous and well put together, but it's a testament to working so very very hard at something and having a beautiful, creative, fun end result. I was just writing a blog post about creativity and what happens when you share. I know just how you feel.

Please don't let them get you down. You're a amazing artist.

This skirt is soooo awesome!!  You are a very talented young lady.  I am soooo proud of you.

Please do not ever let someones negative influence you.  You have a gift and that is something.  I am sure that your loved ones probably didn't realize that it was hurtful.    I am not defending, but sometimes what is said to be funny really isn't.

BTW...  your sewing room is incredible.  I am totally moving in with you..   ;)

I must commend you on your incredible craftiness and artistry!  ;D

Your skirt is stunning.  Absolutely stunning.

As for your loved ones who scoffed at your accomplishments - at least you spend your time feeding your imagination and creating something beautiful, instead of tearing someone down.

You rock!

I think it's amazing, and people that heckle your work don't realize the hours that go into things like that (my friends as well) If it makes you happy then wear it. And like most things, it all depends on how it makes you feel when you put it on. Your clothing's attitude is all about how you wear it....

I am seriously in awe! This is beautiful, gorgeous and so much more! My mouth dropped open! I made hubby come look and he thinks its amazing too. The time this must have taken has me in awe as well. I wish I has the talent to do this. This is a work of art and something you have every right to be proud of.  Also that last photo is an piece of art in and of itself. I love how you captured the movement of the skirt but have her face in focus. Divine is the best word I can come up with.

i apologize if i say something that has already been said. i couldn't read through all 17 pages, but i'm sure it's more people speaking out about how proud you should be cause: THAT SKIRT IS AMAZING!

i clicked on the picture because i love rainbows. and i thought, oh that could be terrible. patchwork? rainbows? floor length!? that is a recipe for disaster... and then i saw the pictures, and it is beautiful. you pulled off an amazing feat with both your craftsmanship, and with the way you pulled off your design and a combination of elements that could have looked ridiculous in delicate balance.

THAT SKIRT IS AMAZING!

good job. fuck your friends. they don't have to wear that skirt. i will. and so will 17 pages of crafters.

I think your skirt is fab!  I also think patchwork is the next big fashion trend, up and coming, the big fashion houses are playing with it for spring next year, a designer friend of mines says ;)

Never let people mocking your stuff make you feel down, do it and sport it, you might start the next new fad, designers copy what they see on the street.

This is beautiful.

I'd love to have the paitence and time to make one myself.

How can it not be practical.  In hot weather we are having in the uk a floaty bright skirt is a must.  Don't be bothered by the scofers.  They might actually be in awe of what you've done and them picking on you is jealousy.

If you have another 5 months I'd love one?  seriously...

I love it so much that if it was mine I'd put a bodice on it and wear it as a wedding dress. That is if I wasn't already married. A rainbow wedding would be nice and worthy of all the effort you've put in.
And now that I've read all 18 pages of this topic, I think if you did decide not to wear it, you could always sell it..lots of other people seem to love it! You can't let all your hard work go to waste.

Anyone who could ridicule this needs smacked upside the head with the Crafters Appreciation Stick of DOOM!

I actually made my husband stop getting ready for work to show him this. His reaction (and he's a very non-crafty guy), was "That's amazing. That's handmade? Holy &*£$ it's gorgeous!"

And I, being completely inept at sewing of all kinds, am in envy, because I would *kill* to make something like that (and wear it! And I *never* wear skirts!).

Seriously, be VERY proud. that skirt is amazing and you should be very proud. I think I may just have to beg my mom to help me make one, because I seriously don't know how I can live without one, lol.

And like everyone else, I would not feel bad about the comments of those you know.  Perhaps they truly are a tad jealous of your talent.

But, seriously, if you did go to sell it, I can't imagine how much you could get for it!  But if I was you, I could hardly think of selling it because it is so beautiful!!

Were the people that mocked the kind of people who couldn't dress themselves decently if they had a stylist standing next to them?? Your skirt is stunning. Impractical? NO WAY! What's impractical about it? It covers her butt and it looks beautiful and unique. Don't let anyone tell you that your work isn't worth the effort. And get advice from people who know what they're talking about. Ignore everyone else's opinions.

Impractical for whom?  A wall-street executive?  Maybe.  A high-profile corporate attorney?  Maybe.  But I'm sure even they let their hair down at 5:30.   ;)

The 'cut' is so flattering.  I can imagine it'd be flattering on many body types, too.

Just adding my voice to the chorus here. I love the colours and the length - I adore big skirts, the swishier and more brightly coloured the better.

And I think this is perfectly practical, assuming you're not going to go hiking through the backwoods in it. I don't know how tall your model is and it looks like she has a couple of inches of heel on her shoes, but the bottom of the skirt is well off the ground in the photo where she's standing, so it shouldn't trail along the ground. Circle skirts give you lots of room to move, so no problems walking in it. Someone else mentioned the colours - that you could wear it with practically any top. And you know what else is great about long skirts? If you haven't shaved your legs for a while you can put on a long swishy skirt and calf or knee boots and still stay relatively cool without frightning everyone with your fuzziness! Perfect for lazy girls in summer! Now tell me that's impractical :D

Here's something else to think about: if they saw a skirt like it for several hundred dollars in a boutique, or advertised in a glossy magazine, what would they think of it then?

It is wonderful. Some people just don't understand why people sew or that a big part of the value is the process. They think the goal is to sew things that look store bought. If that was the goal there would be little reason to bother. You did a great job!!! I really like the shot with the flamenco pose!

This skirt is amazing!!! And if they only knew how much work it took to make this (i'm sure) then they definitely wouldn't say anything about it. Not only the work and effort put into it but it's beautiful! Ignore them!
If you are proud of it and like it--then it was worth it, no question.
Plus the fact that I'm pretty much in awe of it completely. And I would definitely sport that if I had made it or someone made it for me.

Awesome job!

To be very very honest... it kind of blows my mind that anyone could give anything less than praise over this incredible wearable work of art. It is so beautifully crafted. Brilliant colors, arranged perfectly, professional looking construction, looks fabulous on your lovely friend.  I think the issue has nothing at all to do with your creation, the issue is on their side.

The Criticisms were partially in jest, but they were sharp edged.  I don't think they were jealous, I do think they just didn't understand - at all - either what it took to make it or what it meant to me.

I deal with the yo-yo weight as well. I get fed up with things that fit and then dont and then do and then don't.

This fabric was BOTH just lying around AND purchased for this project.  I put the blue-green on the bottom because I had the most of it just lying around. I designed the rest of the color placement around that one definition.  If I had scraps from other projects, I used them.  If I didn't I purchased what I needed.  I mainly buy my fabrics from clearance bins, sales, and remnants. I try REALLY REALLY hard to stay away from the more expensive fabrics because goodness knows I just wouldn't have the restraint.

Thank you so much for your comments :)

Ruffling!
The ruffling that I did for this skirt and for the skirting you can see in my other post about my craftroom I did on my sewing machine.  You can purchase a foot called a "ruffler" and once you figure out how the (very intimidating) thing works, you can ruffle with ease if not with a lot of noisyness.  The Ruffler saved me from this project taking a whole year.  I used to ruffle by hand by hand pleating the fabric - It's a slightly different look than what the machien ruffler does - but you just fold and pin the fabric accordion style to make it however full you want.  You can also do a gather by sewing a straight stitch and pulling the fabric.

PM me if you'd like me to refer you to a gathering tutorial. :)

To be absolutely fair, this skirt DOES weigh a bit more than a typical skirt might.  You will always look airy and light and flowy to others, but you will carry the weight of something like 16 yards of fabric on you.

It is just beautiful - especially for photography.  Remember that many articles of clothing are best viewed in their proper context (right peron, location, accessories, event, etc.). Not everyone is always going to love what you make - remember the bigger reasons for your art.  If everyone loved it, it wouldn't be that unique...

You are awesome and your skirt is great!  Please tell me though that you serged or finished the edges??????  You wouldn't want to wash it and have all your seams fray.

Oh dear me, I too have felt the sting of ridicule bury my feeling of accomplishment over something that I had been proud of; even one harsh comment seems to be able to ought weigh a dozen positive ones.  I joined Craftster because I believed my work was good and wanted to share it with kindred crafty spirits and find out if in fact my work was worth continuing; with every positive comment I feel a little safer, a little more hopeful, and a little more confident that the people around have no idea what they are talking about. I still hesitate to post some projects because they are the ones that I put my heart and soul in to and I just couldn't bear it if the strangers who have been so nice told me that those projects were not worth the time I spent on them.

From one insecure crafter to another I love this; I think it took amazing talent, skill and vision.  The fact that you finished it and loved it is more important that what ANYONE else says.

Holy Moly!
That is an AMAZING piece of art!
Your friend looks BEAUTIFUL in it!!
I am in awe!
That must have taken forever to do!
I'm saving this link so that I can be inspired to learn and learn so that I can do something like this someday.
By then I'll be an old lady..who wears ALL her jewellery and too much perfume..with all my cats..
but the skirt will still be cool then.
Thanks for the inspiration!

My family sometimes doesn't get my work and doesn't appreciate the time I put into it. So I feel your pain. But the idea that this skirt is impractical is ridiculous to me. It's gorgeous and will add a splash of color to any season. If they don't like it, then forget their comments and wear it with pride. I know I would!

You skirt is absolutely stunning, and pardon my francais, but SCREW those who mocked it (and you!).

I worked on a dress for a week once to wear to a shower, and after I had FINALLY finished, I showed it to my husband and he said, "It looks like a bathrobe".  I ended up not wearing it, and I've regretted it ever since.

I find myself constantly defending my crafting, especially to my husband (whose only "hobbies" are, apparently: smoking, bitching and complaining, but I digress).  HOWEVER, ,who is the first one the nay-sayers come to when they need a hem done or a costume for their kids' school play?

We should make our own t-shirt:

CRAFTING IS NOT A CRIME

Simply put, your skirt is beautiful.  That it was handmade makes it all the more special.

I will tell you a story (*strum strum*) of a friend of mine who used to play with unusual cuts and colors for her hair.  One day she was in a bookstore and the cashier had the effrontery to say to her face, "You do know how stupid you look, don't you?"

My friend had more self-control than I would have in that situation.  Rather than letting fly with several colorful metaphors, she looked the cashier right in the eye and said, "I didn't do it for you."

If people are callous and unthinking enough to give you grief over a thing of beauty that you clearly enjoyed taking the time and effort to make, please, please remember that you didn't do it for them.  Their negative comments should not be allowed to outweigh the literally hundreds of positive responses you have received.

And don't let them stop you from wearing it, either.  After that one snarky comment in the bookstore, I've noticed my friend has held back on the hair coloring.  I honestly don't know whether she was just reaching an age when it was losing its luster, or whether she let one little punk (who frankly deserved to lose her job) unduly influence her into stopping the practice.  If so, it would be incredibly sad.

Congratulations! I love it!

BTW, when I showed your skirt to my dh, he said, "WOW!!" When I told him your loved ones ridiculed it, he said, "Well, there's no accounting for fools." He also said they're clueless and tasteless. And he's a very conservative guy, fashionwise and otherwise. He also commented that a person would have to pay upwards of three hundred dollars just to get close to something like that.... This from a guy who gets his jeans for eight dollars, wears them until they fall apart, and doesn't see why anyone else would act differently.

Absolutely stunning. I have been wanting to make one of these, and I think you may have just given me the kick in the butt I needed. I understand the family non-appreciation, my first attempt at knitting lace was a scarf for my grandmother, her response, "What am I supposed to do with this?" The scarf was no less beautiful in my eyes, but in some way my grandmother was. :'(
I have a note card on my wall that I walk by every day that reads "The only kind of dignity which is genuine is that which is not diminished by the indifference of others."

The beauty of your work is genuine, it cannot, therefore, be diminished by others.  ;)

I think this is really awesome!  And one thing I've learned from all of my crafting experience is that not everyone will appreciate the hardwork and pride you see in all of your creations.  So you must lift your head high and just say, well, if you could do better then let's see!  (That normally shuts them up pretty quick).  I think this is so cool and I really want one of my own-but alas, someday.

I LOVE your skirt.
It is beautiful.  It reminds me of a swirl dress my mom made for me when I was in grade school.  My dress was sleeveless, with a small ruffle on top of shoulder, like a cap sleeve and the bottom was long and was made of 3 or 4 colors of gingham, yellow, pink and blue is what I remember.  The bottom flowed out like yours and I LOVED to twirl around and make it spin out.

You did a great job, don't let anyone put you down!

Wow, that is INCREDIBLE! Completely puts mine to shame. Mine had much less tiers (only 5) and it was much shorter (knee length) and it STILL took ages, so I completely understand the sheer weight of work that would have gone into this. You should be proud of this, it is amazing. Don't listen to people's criticism, don't feel bad because of what's "in" or "now" or whatever. They're probably bitter that you had the skill and dedication to make something so wonderful that they couldn't hold a candle to.

Everyone, be proud of your crafts!

This is amazingly beautiful; I can't even say how much.  I completely adore it and I'd wear it in a heartbeat and dare anyone to say something negative about it.  This is truly a work of art and you should be proud of it and yourself.  Don't pay one bit of attention to anyone who says otherwise.  All that really matters is what you think, and if you think it's wonderful, then it is.

I'd wear it, and I think it'd be fab casual or formal. Casual with a nice shirt of vest type top, much like your model in fact; formal with a corset of a single matching colour I reckon. omg I soooooo want one.

Has anyone heard of the musical "The Last 5 Years"?

People keep mentioning Joseph and the Technicolor dream coat, and while I agree that this skirt has a similar flavor - what really inspired me was the Story of Schmuel.

Here is an excerpt:

First, a story. A little Christmas Story.
I call it "The Story of Schmuel, Tailor of Klimovich"

Schmuel would work till half-past ten at his tailor shop in Klimovich
Get up at dawn and start again with the hems and pins and twist
Forty-one years had come and gone at his tailor shop in Klimovich
Watching the winters soldier on, there was one thing Schmuel missed

"If I only had time," old Schmuel said
"I would build the dress that's in my head
A dress to fire
The mad desire
Of girls from here to Minsk
But I have no more hours left to sew"
Then the clock upon the wall began to glow...

And the clock said:
"Na na na na, na na na
Oh Schmuel, you'll get to be happy!
Na na na na, na na na
I give you unlimited time!
Na na na na, na na na
So Schmuel, go sew and be happy!"
But Schmuel said
"No, no, it's not my lot
I've gotta make do with the time I've got"

Schmuel was done at half-past ten and he said "Good night, old Klimovich"
Put on his coat to go, but then the clock cried, "Wait! Not yet!
Even though you're not wise or rich
You're the finest man in Klimovich
Listen up, Schmuel
Make one stitch and you'll see what you can get"

But Schmuel said
"Clock, it's much too late
I'm at peace with life
I accept my fate..."
But the clock said
"Schmuel! One stitch and you will
Unlock the dreams you've lost!"
So Schmuel, with reluctance, took his thread
He pulled a bolt of velvet and he said
"I should take out my teeth and go to bed
I'm sitting here with talking clocks instead!"

And the clock said:
"Na na na na, na na na
Oh Schmuel, you'll get to be happy!
Na na na na, na na na,
I give you unlimited time
Na na na na, na na na
Just do it and you can be happy!"

So Schmuel put the thread through the needle's eye
And the moon stared down from a starless sky
And he pushed the thread through the velvet black
And he looked, and the clock was turning...back

So he grabbed his shears and he cut some lace
As the hands moved left on the old clock's face
And his fingers flew and the fabric swirled
It was nine-fifteen all around the world

Every cut and stitch was a perfect fit
As if God Himself were controlling it!
And Schmuel cried through a rush of tears
"Take me back! Take me back all forty-one years!"

And on it went down that silent street
Till Schmuel's dress was at last complete
And he stretched his arms
And he closed his eyes
And the morning sun finally started to rise

And the dress he made on that endless night
Was a dress that would make any soul take flight
Not a swatch, not a skein had gone to waste
Every ribbon and button ideally placed
And sewn into the seams were forty-one seasons of dreams
Dreams that you could feel
Coming real

And that very dress, so the papers swore,
Was the dress a girl in Odessa wore
On the day she promised forevermore
To love a young man named Schmuel
Who only one day before
Had knocked at her kitchen door..."

Your dedication to this problem is inspiring---the longest I've ever worked on something was a week, and I thought THAT was a long time!!!

I absolutely love it.  It is beautiful.  If you need for it to have a good home, look no further, I would love to have it.

People can be so cruel sometimes and it could be out of just jealousy or out and out spite.  I just ignore them and bask in my own happy feeling.

You should feel quite accomplished, I am not really a sewer, I can but do not like to.  I would love to make one of these but know that it would take forever.  If I was you, I would wear it everytime that I was going to see the Naysayers.  LOL

It is excellent and awesome.

Enjoy your skirt and accomplishment.

Cheryl

PS your friend modeling looks like she loves it.

That happened with me and my dress I just made, I spent so much time on it and I think it looks pretty darn professional ;) yet people didnt see the full picture, and only  I really know how much went into it, and you should be proud of your accomplishment :)

That. Is. AMAZING!!! Like, jaw-droppingly amazing!!  :o
The colors are fabulous and I can't even imagine all the hours of love and work that went into making it, you created a true masterpiece.

I'm just getting into American Tribal Style Bellydance, and the main skirts are made with similar construction -just not so many or so tiny of squares- to get beautiful loft and ruffle without bulk, and I have to say I think this skirt would be the centerpiece in a dance routine. GORGEOUS!!

I'd love to try making one myself, but I don't know that I have the patience (unfortunately). About how many yards do you think it took? Or how many yards is it around the bottom hem?

I'd never wear it, but I don't wear a lot of things. Your friend was so kind to model it. She looks gorgeous and like she is having so much fun!!!!! Pretty, very pretty. Love all the colours. I really love the colors and you did a great job on the gradation (That might not seem like a big deal, but I am one of those people who never could figure out how to put together a color wheel in art class XD)
It makes me angry that anyone would put you down for creating something so wonderful and elaborate...Maybe they lack a talent and are jealous? I can't think of any other reason to be so unreasonably cruel.

I like the skirt and the colors and the ruffly-ness and the effort you put in it! And I hate it when people ridicule your hard work! If it helps, I know just how you feel...

Oh my good god, WOW.

I've been lurking on this site for a while now, but I had to join just to tell you how amazing this skirt is. It's mind bogglingly lovely and I want want want it.

I can only hope to one day have the patience and skill that it must have required. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I ADORE THAT SKIRT....

sorry... But I really do love it...

truly...

everything about it...

to hear that ANYONE would say anything bad about it... is painful... even to me... and I didn't spend the time making it...

And it must've taken gobs of time... clearly those mocking have never sewn... let them try and see if they can sew something that nice... or even half as pretty as that... let alone as successfully...

kudos.

You deserve all the "thatta girls", "way to go" and "that rocks".. because you totally proved that with hard work and dedication, anything can be created!

My hat is off to you mama..

My DH even said how beautiful it was!  He doesn't even notice my stuff! LOL!

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!! Seriously, there was this store downtown where I live that sold stuff like this...a hippie store, but the things there were SO FREAKING COOL!! This seriously amazes me, how well it's put together and the way the colors lead your eye to the bottom of the skirt and then back to the top...awesome job!!

The time and effort you put into making such an amazing creation... I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. I know I wouldn't have the patience to finish something like this!

I really do love this skirt, and I really like how it looks when spread out in the second picture! The third one looks good as well! It's nice that it flows beautifully when spun.

It's GORGEOUS, please keep making beautiful skirts!

This is gorgeous and I honestly wouldn't normally like this sort of thing, but the colors are so nice and it doesn't look like, randomly patched together if you know what I mean? The colors blenddd :) It's beautiful <3

I love this skirt so much I signed up for craftster just now, so I could comment on it!  It is so professional!  And gorgeous!  I've noticed that people sometimes make thoughtles negative comments without even thinking about what they are criticizing.  It's happened to me, and it's really hard to get over being angry about it.  But in the end, their negative attitude is its own punishment.  So I say, live up your own awesomeness, because life is too short not to.

Well, first off, I'll say that I would probably never wear this as I hate floor-length skirts and my tastes are more toward the punk/alternative end. But WOW! This is breathtaking! What a piece of wearable art!! I can't believe anyone made any negative comments on it - like I said, I wouldn't wear it but I still think it's gorgeous so I don't see how someone else could be rude about it. Sometimes non-crafters just don't understand unfortunately. Wear it with pride!

And congrats on getting in CRAFTZINE!

Oh wow, just wow!!  I almost don't even know what to say, except WOW again!!!  This is beyond beautiful, but I don't know a word that will fit!  You should be so proud of your work and your eye for colors is amazing.  It's hard not to take people's comments to heart, especially if you're a sensitive soul *I know I am*, but it is one of those experiences that can make you stronger, if you let it...which it sounds like you have.  Plus, you're usually more appreciated than you know...it is great to have all of fellow Craftsters' support, right?  :)  Besides, you got the last laugh...congrats on the feature in Craftzine!!   ;D  Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

When I first opened this up, I said "oooohhhh".  Then I said it again.  And a few more times.  About half a dozen oooohhh & ahhhhs later after simply staring at the first photo for a minute or 2, I scrolled down to read someone said something negative about the skirt.  And I have to wonder what could they have possibly said?  It's amazing.  Utterly beautiful.  It's too pretty to sit in a closet.  I hope you wear it often & with pride.  And I'm sure you'll brighten someone's day each time you wear it out.

You lifted my spirits simply by viewing this beautiful work of art.  Thanks.   :)

WHAAAAT?!?!?! People mocked this?! Okay... that is just... insane! Five months of work and sewing all of the pieces together... how it's well colour coordinated.

I love it. Whoever is hatin', let them hate because they are insane.

Your skirt is absolutely beautiful, and I really want to make one like it someday. (Not as long and with bigger squares... I'm not quite as ambitious as you are.  :D)
Anyway much love to you for not letting people's opinions bog you down. It's as my grandmother told me when I was upset over one of my friends hating something I made for her... people who don't sew don't really *get* it and that I should sew for myself. I do that... I make things for people sometimes, but I sew because I love to sew.

You have no reason to feel anything but pride and pleasure over your accomplishment. It impresses me not just because I know how much work went into it, but because it is visually arresting. That you made it adjustable over a very wide range of sizes just adds to the amazing-ness; and it's really smart of you to make such a labor-intensive garment one you can continue to wear if your weight goes up and down.

I also LOVE this skirt, it is so awesome!!!! People that critize others, often feel badly about themself so they have to put others down.  And lets face it, if they can't see how wonderful and gorgeous this skirt is they are fools!  But they are probably the same people that would pay $14,000.00 for it, if it had a Prada/Gucce or other dumb expensive name tag in it!

When i saw rainbow skirt in the title, i was so excited!!!! i love colourful things, and skirts! ...and let me tell you ..i was NOT dissapointed!  ;D the shot of your friend in it, on the floorboards, with it all spread out is amazing. Thankyou for sharing this with us, and your experience with it. I, and many other crafters/sewers, etc. get flack for what they create sometimes (aha, with me it's most of the time), even when youve put your whole heart & soul into it, i guess it's just a matter of what you like and what you dont.. I LOVE that skirt  :D ! The colours, in the sequence it's in,  is fantastic, and it looks so professionally sewn for your first proper project. Kudos to you!! i also love the fact it fits to most people, brilliant idea. Im so envious of it.. and after seeing all the replies that are here, it looks like everyone else here is too! I don't know who would say anything bad about your skirt ó it's absolutely amazing.

You clearly put loads of work into it, and it really shows. Lots of people are pretty stupid and critical, especially when it comes to what other people are wearing. I know many people (including my roommate) who dislike anything I make that doesn't look like I got it at a store.

Sometimes creativity and originality aren't appreciated as much as they should be, but I'm glad fellow craftsters appreciate this piece of artwork you've constructed.

Yours is a one-of-a-kind piece I would be proud to wear. Great job!

I love this skirt and I love that it isn't conventional & it stands out.  I don't think it's impractical at all - I'd wear it.  And anyone who couldn't appreciate the work that went into it is kind of rude, IMHO.  I was actually thinking of doing an all white one for myself, or aqua.  I once had a friend who called me artsy because of my homemade ensembles & I was always proud of that because she was a hip chick.    :D

Did you notice that one of the 'big four' pattern companies has a "new" bohemian inspired skirt pattern, and that every season, there's at least one tiered skirt pattern in every book?

DO NOT take the criticism personally!   ALL that counts is that YOU love it.

Some people can't think outside of the box...maybe it's not their taste or sometimes all they are responding to is the color, and they can't visualize it any other way.  Show them the same skirt in their favorite colorway, and they'd love it.

It's lovely!  it's twirly!  it's colorful!  and look how much fun your beautiful model is having in it!  LOOK at all those gorgeous fabrics!  It's a quilter's dream!  Thumbs up!  I'd wear it in a heartbeat.

We create because it's a need within us.  If it made YOU happy to do it, then it is worth it's weight in gold.

i continue to enjoy that skirt.  i've seen it on here quite a bit.  and every time i see it again thinking i've found something new--my thought process isn't "oh, crap this skirt again," it's more of an awe and "my goodness, every time i see this after i've completed a project i realize exactly how much work it took."  it amazes me that people you love and supposedly love you would scoff at something that took you 5 months to complete and that you were so enamored with. i love it!

be PROUD!

This skirt is awesome and is truly art! People can be cruel. I find that they are usually miserable within their own soul and don't understand kindness.  You have truly created a work of art!

Too often people who don't make things by hand don't understand the joy that comes from simply making something.  I have a good friend (in every other way) who doesn't understand that joy.  He's always saying "where would you wear that" or "why not just buy it."  What you created however is a piece of art.  You created something beautiful that you love and that is worth any amount of time and effort.  Just remember:  You have something no one else in the world has or will ever have, and it contains a special kind of love that only you could have put in it.

I want one...!!!!! I'd so wear that! I don't know how hard I've looked for a skirt that does exactly that full bottom with a fitted waist. I'm tiny so finding a skirt that does just that is difficult.

Don't let others get you down, that is BEAUTIFUL work!

I love bright fun rainbow clothing.  Just remember when it is worn it is surrounded with happiness. It made you happy to make it.  And the colors are make you as well as others happy. This is so beautiful! I became a member of this site just so I could message you about this skirt   :) I love it!! I only wear long skirts and it is so hard to find any decent long skirts anymore, so for my birthday I got a sewing machine and I want to start making my own, I saw pictures of this skirt and thought it was just so wonderful and I would love to try and make my own skirt similar to this, Do you think you could help get me started? I have never done any sewing before, I can set up the sewing machine with the direction booklet, but I wouldn't know what to do when it came to start making the skirt, I would really like your help!! Thank You so much, It is really beautiful!!

:o   WOW!!  That is amazing. I want to make a shirt like that some day. Every time I see some one with one I drool over the thing. I've always thought they were beautiful.

As to the ones who looked at it bad.....don't listen to them. I never do, and everyone looks at me and my creations like I'm out of my mind. Believe me the raised eye brows and comments behind my back sometimes get to me. But then I started to think who cares! Really I'm the one doing what I want whether they like it or not. So now I'm to the point that I don't care if others like it or not, as long as 'I' like it. And the fact that the more people don't like what I've done makes me like it even more. Don't know if that's good or bad really, but there it is. Shock reactions are wonderous anymore!

Quote
*sigh*

I'm sure this has been said to you loads of times in this thread, but you should be VERY  PROUD of that skirt, it is truly fantastic - a real work of art.  You said it took 5 months to make, and from your description you put a lot of time and effort in to making it.  I think it is beautiful.  It is just sad that even if what you have made isn't to the taste of those you show it to it would be nice if they at least acknowledged the amount of time, thought and effort you have obviously lavished on this.  It is truly stunning, and if I was given this I wouldn't dare wear it out in case I ruined it - I would probably do what your friend is and twirl around in it.  Well done you, and don't give up - keep on making stuff.

I know you already have 41 pages of compliments here, but I definitely wanted to join the chorus.  The only thing that would possibly stop me from wearing this AMAZING skirt is that it probably wouldn't be very flattering with my shape... and even then, I could see wearing it any old way, body issues be damned.  You should be very proud of the beautiful thing you created.

Whenever I am criticized for something I've put time into or something I think is great (be it clothing or some craft or other work), I just think of myself as a bit of a hippie.  I might be going against the flow, but hippies don't care, and hippies are cool.  :)  Your skirt is inspiring - giving me the guts to do something similar and be proud of it when I wear it.

Post by: beledi on May 03, 2009 01:29:42 AM
I know this is totally redundant, but I love, love, love your skirt. I had a very similar experience actually and I was really happy to see your post. I made a circle skirt out of an unfinished quilt top. It was very colorful and vibrant and I left it floor length because I love the flourish of a super long skirt. Well, the first time I wore it out I was so proud and thought I looked amazing and my guy and I went out to eat and I overheard this couple making fun of my skirt. I wanted to go home and cry! But then I realized that the couple making fun of me was sitting there in grubby boring t-shirts and khakis and I thought, "Well, why would I care about impressing them anyway? I don't want to blend in with those types of people! I don't want to fit into the grubby t-shirt and khaki crowd! I want to stand out!" If I'm gonna spend a lot of time and effort making something, I want it to be a bit over the top and fantastic and head-turning. That's why if I'm gonna bake something it's gonna be caramel bread pudding and not grilled chicken breast and if I'm gonna sew something, it's gonna be something a bit over the top that makes people do a double take. There are lots of stores full of boring stuff that we can buy already. I say, if you put the time and effort into making clothing, make it a piece of art. The truth is, attention makes a lot of people feel uncomfortable, because they're insecure, and they don't want to be self aware. And then they even start to discourage other people from being self aware. So if someone scoffs at your skirt, what they're really saying, "I'll bet people will really notice you when you wear that skirt, and that would make me feel really uncomfortable because when people pay attention to me, it makes me self conscious, because I don't always like myself, and I'm scared of standing out. Even if it's positive attention."

Okay, I'm done with my rant. Here's my question: How exactly did you make the "belt" instead of the drawstring? Can you put up a pic? I wanna see how you did it!
Thanks in advance!!

Sweetheart, I can't believe you would care a single second about any negative feedback someone gave you about this skirt. You made it because you love it. Just because not everyone would wear it doesn't mean anything at all. It's a huge accomplishment and a stunning one at that. If everyone stopped making things they loved just because they got some criticism for it, would there be any artists left? The wonderful thing about showing the fruits of your labor to people like us is that we understand exactly what went into making that one of a kind beauty and appreciate and respect it even if it's not something we'd wear ourselves. Your skirt is awesome, revel in your accomplishment!

I don't understand why some people feel the need to be so negative. I own a ridiculous skirt that is so huge (somewhat like yours but not near as colourful and pretty) that it nearly filled a room when I twiz. I like to twiz, and anyone who doesn't like it I feed to my eternal skirt. ;-)

I really want to try to make something like yours now. I'm in awe of it. I really bet it's fun to twiz in it. I'm going to collect bits of fabric now. ^^

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this, but I'm thinking if you pulled it up over your bust and belted it it could also make a really stunning strapless summer dress!  I'm imagining with the circle skirt and a belted waist, it might even have a very retro 50's silhouette.  I could just imagine you wearing it as a strapless dress to a summer wedding.  Gorgeous!

I really have to chime in here and agree that this is an amazing skirt, and don't let anyone tell you any different!!! 5 months is a long time to make something, and I think it was well worth the effort! You've got something wonderful and beautiful to keep for a long time and you made it with your own hands!  Don't let anyone put you off creating beautiful things - it was very rude and insensitive of them to mock your creation, it's not as if you'd go around mocking the fact that they wear store bought clothes!!  Loads of people mock me for my knitting, but I really don't care because I love and adore the things I make and that's all that matters.

Keep up the brilliant good work!

I know, I know, 44 pages of complimentary response - do you still need another?

...Hell yeah!

I oohed when I saw the skirt and immediately started lusting after it. It hurt to see that someone had hurt your feelings over it, but I totally understand. I firmly believe that nobody can hurt you like family/close friends. You want so much to please them - and they know your buttons and feel comfortable enough to say things to you that they wouldn't dare say to a stranger for fear of getting punched in the face.

So I'll join the chorus in saying, 'it's gorgeous, I want it, I envy you, and no matter who said something negative, they're way off base.'

I'm also looking at all the comments (yes, I read all 44 pages - me, ocd? never!) and I'm seeing a lot of "I normally hate rainbow stuff but this is wonderful!" comments and I've been thinking - I think part of what makes this skirt work so well is that you don't just play with hue, you play with shade. Most 'rainbow' anything goes for roughly the same intensity of the colors it uses, usually the most super-saturated shades - so you'll see emerald green, cobalt blue, royal purple, fire-engine red, lemon yellow crammed together. That does get visually tiring and can be very 'loud.'

You, however, didn't do that. You used white, you used pale shades of the colors as rows, and by putting the lighter shades in as rows by themselves, you broke up the more intense colors so they could shine without competing with each other too much. Really nice choice, it makes this skirt sing instead of shout.

Whoever criticized that skirt is nuts!  It is beyond gorgeous.  And they are beyond mean to pick on you or say it's impractical!  Okay, I'm done being mad at them for your sake now, lol...

I wear skirts a lot, both long and short, and having one like this would be amazing.  If you ever want to test it for it's practicality, send it to me for a few months and we'll show them how often it's worn and how practical it really is to have a wonderful piece of work that matches tons of different shirts and shoes.  I promise an action shot for every time it leaves my closet! (lol, as if it would ever make it there, lol.)

On a serious note, I love the way you combined all the different colors and shades, and I really really want to make a quilt like this now.  You're awesome and I love it!

i was looking at your skirt before i was a member and squealing at it's amazing awesomeness, i mean i did a patchwork dress for my a level project so i understand to some extent the work that goes into something like that. Plus the colours and everything about it was so amazing, i was horrified when i read that some people had ridiculed it, it's such a fine piece of art, so BOO the naysayers! i really want to go and make one but i know i have neither the time nor patience, so to let you know if you ever consider making another one i would so buy it off you! :)

This is one of the most stunning pieces of clothing I have ever seen. It was totally worth the time and effort you put into it, as I am sure you have figured out by the overwhelming response on here. I would totally wear a dress like this, and have wisted it as a project I might like to attempt in the future.
I think for someone to ridicule something this beautiful, the must have no appreciation of the beauty and love of handmade work, and on top of this, they clearly have no sense of fun or whimsy. What a very dull life they must lead. I say wear this skirt with pride and remember always the talent, love and patience that went into creating it.

I think your rainbow skirt is extraordinary!  I think it is a beautiful idea, well executed, and yes, very classy looking!!  I know a LOT of people who would jump at the chance to wear a dress that expressive!!  Some people just aren't brave enough to love things that look different than what is sold to the masses.  All the better for those of us who don't want to look like the masses!!!  Keep up the great work!!!

Oh my god this is the most beautiful skirt I've ever seen.  I'd wear it everywhere, anywhere, all the time and any time!!!!  I don't think I've ever had my breath catch over a piece of clothing until now!  (At least, when I wasn't in it :p aka, my prom dress.)

This was wisted in a heart beat.  I've yet to go see if you'd be willing to make one to sell.  Oh man I'm hoping you do!  I'd be more than willing to buy all the fabric and cut all the squares!  I just couldn't sew it together to save my little life!!!

Clearly the people who made fun of this skirt are idiots because it is TOTALLY FIERCE. I really want to make one (possibly knee length though) for my friend because I know she'd flip over it, but I can tell it was an insanely complex project. Five months? MAN I admire your persistence~

Also I love the photos where it's all spread out so you can see the fullness. <3

WOW!  Anyone who can't see how AMAZING this skirt is, is blind (and stupid).  I've made a couple of skirts like this out of solid colors and that alone is unbelievably tedious.

Please don't let negative comments color how you feel about it.  It's absolutely gorgeous and you should be exceedingly proud of the fabulous job you did on it.

I think it's amazing! I used to belly dance and that type of skirt would be absolutely gorgeous and perfect while dancing...seriously it's the type of thing a dancer would pay hundreds of dollars for the privilege of wearing!
I love all the colors and it would look stunning swirling during a dance!

You should be very proud of your work. I've made and loved many an item that others have not loved...who cares? They're probably just wishing they could make something as amazing as this themselves! You're very talented!

Actually, this skirt has inspired me to create a patchwork skirt of my own. And maybe a patchwork beach wrap, too. Ooh!!! I could make it out the towel scraps I've been saving as the towels getting old and falling apart. SO cool. :) In fact, I saw this a few months ago and promptly made myself one! Mine's not as detailed as yours - bigger squares and starting with a narrower waist, so my bottom layer only had 99 squares (heh, "only"!); but still, I like it. I used browns, fading from cream at the top through various coffee/mocha shades down to dark chocolate brown at the bottom. I'll post it when I get around to taking pics - but yours is still way more awesome! I hope you showed your unappreciative relatives this thread, so they could see how talented people in the know think you are!

This is the most delicious skirt that I have ever seen. :-)

It is exactly what I've been looking for!

Forgive my ignorace, I understood most of the instructions, but when you said: "Then I straight stitched vertically to sew the skirt into a circle."...what exactly do you mean?

I had assumed that the layers were already sewn into circles before gathering each to the next. Have I misunderstood?

Please advise as I already have all of my squares cut out and am itching get started, but wouldn't want to make a dreadful mistake right at the beginning. ;-)

All the best and thanks for sharing!

You are so amazingly talented.

I fell in love with your home and how you decorate it so stylishly on a budget.

So I was reading your blog and I saw that you sold the skirt and bought a king size bed of the money!!! :D It seemed it was a bittersweet proces for you to let it go, what totally makes sense to me as I am even having trouble letting swap ATC's go  ;D.

Funny thought: just imagine telling the people that riduculed you, that you bought a huge bed and more from the profit you made. Very doubtful if they ever made a thing themselves from scratch that would be worth such a sum.  ::)

Just remember that you have an amazing set of eyes for style and gifted hands for creating your stuff.

I would love to see a group of dancers performing a piece, all wearing versions of your skirt. That would be amazing, with all the colors twirling, showing off the shape and the fullness of the skirt. Gorgeous!

I understand it must have really hurt to have something you have put so much time and effort into ridiculed.  We put a part of ourselves into our creations, so they aren't just ridiculing the item...they are ridiculing us as well.  I'm sorry that happened to you!  People can be so horrible  :-[  But I really think this skirt is awesome.  You can tell that a lot of love was put into it, and it has so much unique loveliness.  Anyways I'm not just saying that to make you feel better, I really mean it  :D

So it has been quite a while since this thread has had any activity, but I arrived here from stumbleupon and signed up for a craftster account just to tell you this:

If I saw you on the street or in a store or something, and you were wearing this skirt, I would stop you and tell you how much I love it. And then I would ask you where you got it. And you'd say "I made it." And my jaw would drop and I would probably take a picture of it so I could make one (and by make one I mean dream about it all the time but never actually make it because I am a very bad sewer).

This skirt is BEAUTIFUL. I love rainbows, especially like these.

And also - years ago, I went to prom with this boy I liked very much. And I made him an origami boutonniere, because he really liked origami. But I also brought a backup, just in case he didn't like it, even though I assumed he would. And when I presented them to him, he chose the backup. I was so hurt. I had worked really hard on the origami one and I thought it was really thoughtful, but he didn't want it and thought it was weird. At Prom you have to be NORMAL - how was I to think anything different?!

After that I realized that, if this boy couldn't appreciate creativity and a little abnormality, then he wasn't anyone I wanted to be with (although we are still friends I do still enjoy his company as a friend). Anyway, even though I felt awful at the time, I realized that HE is the one who lost MY respect, not the other way around.

So, anyway - hearing negative comments about your crafts hurts. And I'm sure that your loved ones mean a great deal to you. But if they can't recognize the crafty strange quirky rainbowy creative beautiful part of you...well, then they just can't. And that's THEIR problem. They're just missing that happy free part of themselves. Love yourself, and love what you create, because I bet a thousand dollars and chocolate cake that you have worn that skirt somewhere and someone has stopped you to tell you how beautiful it was and you smiled and secretly wanted to say you made it but didn't - or maybe you DID because you SHOULD tell people you made it - or maybe you haven't worn it out yet but I can assure you that it will happen when you do.

Plus, people who love rainbows are always more fun and creative and successful and lovable anyway. So, their loss, right?

:) And that skirt is so beautiful, I can't even begin to tell you. Rainbows are a very important symbol/figure in my life, and I often look for crafts that are rainbow-themed - and this is seriously THE most beautiful one I've found. <3 Keep on crafting and keep up with the rainbows. :)

ps. do you ever do contra dancing? if not, you should take it up just to wear this skirt to a dance, because there's a lot of spinning and stuff and this skirt would look so beautiful. it's pretty easy to learn, it's just kind of like modified square dancing.
pps. sorry that this post is so long. I just get enthusiastic when rainbows are involved.

This skirt is absolutely breathtaking.  Too gorgeous for words.  I would absolutely love to see it in person.  I can't believe the initial reaction you got from people.  It is such a vulnerable craft to create art.  You pour your heart and soul into something and then people just don't get it.  You deserve the highest accolades possible.

I keep coming back to this post. it's saved in my favorites. I look at it if i am feeling down, the skirt lifts my spirits!! I also like to read other's comments and understand that no matter what anyone else says, if you love the thing you've crafted, you have put your heart, soul, sweat, tears and in my case, blood into a project then nothing anyone else says should matter.

but I know it does.

just read the 50 or so pages of wonderful comments about this skirt and know you are amazing.

I know I am just saying what I ton of other people have said, but I had to add my voice to theirs. I have a hugely ambitious idea for a wedding dress involving patchwork (though more random, and crazy quilt-y than your beautifully meticulous rows) and a gypsy type skirt (though pulled up into gathers, but still requiring the initial length and fullness) I have been searching all over and couldn't find anything that incorporated both concepts until I saw yours. I literally caught my breath and simply devoured the pictures with my eyes; it's not quite the same concept, but LOOK! Here! This is what I am going for! Hooray! Someone did this and maybe I can too! God, how beautiful and breathtaking the work is. Then I saw that people had ridiculed it. Again, I had a visceral reaction. I kid you not, I felt punched in the tummy for you. My hands clenched. Not to threaten physical violence against your loved ones, but god help me, I wanted to smack someone. I can't believe when faced with five months of such astonishingly lovely work, someone would DARE react that way. Even if the style wasn't their cup of tea, respect the work. I hope that even though you still felt stung, that at least the validation of your fellow crafter's helps a bit. You deserve to be proud of this project.

Everything I want to say has already been said, but I think I'm going to repeat it anyway.

Why would they mock a work of art like that for not being practical, and why would you feel shame for your work of art not being practical?  You spent a great deal of time making something unique and extravagant.  Criticizing it for being impractical is like taking a vacation to Florida and then complaining that the weather isn't good for skiing-- simply nonsensical.

I'm pleased to see that this skirt is still getting the praise it deserves 2 years later, especially since your loved ones gave you some misgivings about it. I'm sure it's been said a thousand times, but this truly is an impressive, daunting, and absolutely lovely work of art you've created.

I love your home renovation posts and occasionally will go back and revisit them when I need some inspiration for I too am blessed/cursed with an old, wackily-constructed house...I think I've even begged to borrow Greg in one of the posts, because everything I've done to it just seems to make it worse and BF is just like, it has a roof and therefore is perfect just leave it alone omg. Anyway, one of the things I admire most about your stuff is your incredibly gutsy use of color, and this skirt is no exception!

And I second what the poster on the page previous to this said about this skirt lifting her spirits...I can't look at it and not grin. It's just so fun!

aw, i'm so proud of you for being true to yourself and crafting something you love!  a skirt that took this much time is something that deserves to be loved, and you should wear it with pride :)  and hearing that you've had such a strong and positive reaction from craftster just instills me with pride that we belong to a community of such caring, warm, and creative people.  i love craftster and your skirt! :D

Okay, I know this sounds like a cheesy canned response, but I bet they're just envious. I know I am. My first thought was, "AAAAAAAH!" No lie. That's how awesome it is; all I could come up with was some sort of prerational screaming. It's one of the most beautiful skirts I've ever seen.

Way to go for putting so much time and effort into it! It rocks!

I wish I could give every single one of you a hug - as you have done the same, emotionally, for me.

Thank you. And I wish you all Deliriously Happy Crafting.

And I wish I would find this skirt in my mailbox on Monday.  Had to come back and look at it again, and it's still absolutely beautiful.  You did a fantastic job with the color values--they're neither muddy nor Koolaid neon.

SOME day, I may make something like this for myself.  It could happen.  I never thought I'd make a quilt, and finally did, so this is possible.  Even though I definitely do not have the figure for it, I don't care.  It's something to shoot for.

The people who criticized this were talking out their butts.  They must be eating their hearts out with envy, or else they can't see the beauty in anything.  They're to be pitied.

One day, if you're feeling vengeful, or if they're being particular buttheads about something else, you could print out the entirety of the comments here and make them read them.  8)

Thank you for sewing this skirt.  It's good to know that something that beautiful is out there in the world, somewhere.  There's too much ugly running around.

Agreed!  This makes me so happy just by looking at it.  It seems to kick some of the ugly out of the way and make room for the beautiful!

A skirt like this is on my 50 projects/2010 to-do list for that very reason - it's pure happiness in a skirt, and we all need that, right?   ;D

I cannot express how amazingly inspiring I find this skirt.  I would never have been able to finish such an intricate project.  Please don't stop making such lovely clothing.

(And I did try making the 100 yd skirt once.  I never finished, it was too much for me to be able to finish, but I did kill a sewing machine in the process.)

This skirt is gorgeous. I haven't read all the other comments, but I can tell you I'd wear it in a second. I love patchwork. I don't sew so I will never have one like this, more's the pity. But phooey to anyone who would ridicule it. Firstly, that is so rude. Secondly, such lovely work doesn't deserve it. Kudos!

I guess I don't understand. I've looked at this topic about a million times, but this is the first time I've actually read it (sorry! I was in skirt-awe until now). And admittedly I only read like....the first page. ANYWAY, I don't get it: this skirt is like the epitome of awesome! Who on earth, in their right mind, would ridicule awesomeness?? They're jealous. And whoever said that those people didn't like it because it's not jeans, isn't some name-brand, and shows effort: you're very correct, I think.
All this to say, this skirt is AMAZING!!! I love it so much, and one of my dreams is to own a skirt like this that's handmade as well!

I would rock the crap outta that skirt and twirl all around in it cause its really twirly and i love that about it... the colors are amazing and the effort is well worth it... don't let people hate on you... they are probably just mad cause they can't make something like that themselves or they didn't think of it first... don't let them bring you down and doubt your talent because this took  A LOT of talent... and time and effort and screw those who don't appreciate it or you for that matter... and don't beat yourself up for not saying anything sometimes its hard to say things to those who are close to you... most of the time that is harder than saying f off to a stranger...

I realize this post is almost 2 years old but when I saw your skirt, I instantly loved it and now have to put it on my "have to make" list!!
I loved it the minute I set my eyes on it and as someone in another post about "Rainbow Skirt" had to say, "There's no way you can be sad when you're wearing a skirt with rainbows that twirls like this does!"
I want to twirl too...but I guess I'll just have to make my own rainbow skirt first!!
Thanks for posting your beautiful skirt!!

This is by far the most amazing, beautiful work of art/clothing I have ever seen. It is BEAUTIFUL. So much so that I want to be as "impractical" and make myself one. I LOVE that there is a drawstring and it can fit multiple sizes. This is amazing.

And the fact that it is still getting compliments/comments two years later is a testament to its wonder. I haven't read all 56 pages of this thread, but I do so hope you've been able to communicate with these people by now and let them know their words hurt, and that the rest of us are in awe of your talent.

And yes, your friend is just lovely. I love all of the different poses you used to display the skirt, too - just perfect.

Wow!  I love it, I want it, I adore it.  Forget about the goofs that don't appreciate your style or hard work.  Sometimes those we love are the first to criticize and we can take their negativity to heart too easily.  That may be the most beautiful skirt I've ever seen, and quite frankly I'm even envious of your friend for getting to model it!  Revel in your individuality and create what makes you happy!

This skirt is amazing!! I can see that it is an old thread but no wonder there are so many recent comments with such an incredible creation. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this going for several hundred (400+) dollars.

I'm inspired to add another project to my list for something like this. I'm thinking I have many articles of clothing I like that can be "upcycled" for just such a thing :)

You mentioned that you normally don't sit and allow yourself to be criticized, I imagine that probably happened because you pour your heart, soul, and time into a project to only have it ridiculed by those close to you is a stunning experience.

I don't know if you've done it before, but it seems this could also double as a tube dress if you belted it with a big chunky belt.. Great for the summer.

I absolutely LOVE this skirt. My sisters and I saw it a week ago, and we already had tons of fabric, so we decided to make it. Ours only has 9 tiers, not counting the waist, because I'm shorter, but we've had nothing to do this past week, and have been working on it almost constantly every day. Anyways, we're almost finished, thanks to your lovely example and inspiring pictures (and a LOT of sewing by myself, my two sisters, and a friend). So thank you so much! We'll post pictures hopefully soon.  ;D

AHHH!! I must have a skirt like this! I finally got a sewing machine, and I'm looking to make a skirt (I love the big, flow-y floor-length skirts like this!), and I totally want to know how you did this! I can cut 4x4 squares... easy... how do you "ruffle" the levels? ???
EPIC SKIRT, you TOTALLY ROCK. ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Rainbow Patchwork Skirt
Post by: jezebel_1982 on September 02, 2011 10:36:28 AM
schultebunny - I'm making mine currently, and you would make it just like any other "broomstick" or petti skirt.
Take your 4x4 squares, and sew them in strips that are progressively longer than the last, which creates your tiers. You can use a ruffle foot to ruffle before attaching them to each other, but I'm lazy & don't have a ruffle foot, so I just pin them together and do "cheater ruffles" as I go.
The accepted increase per tier is about 1.5.

This means that in a 10-tier skirt, if you start with a 45" band, you would need 12.5 squares. Round up to 13. Use 1/4" seam allowances like quilting. This would give you 45.5" to start with.
Tier 1: 13 squares
Tier 2: 20 squares
Tier 3: 30 squares
Tier 4: 45 squares
Tier 5: 68 squares
Tier 6: 102 squares
Tier 7: 153 squares
Tier 8: 230 squares
Tier 9: 345 squares
Tier 10: 518 squares

This would give you a fairly average size patchwork skirt without the extra ruffle on the bottom. For the last layer to have that extra frilliness, I used a 2x increase instead of 1.5, so in the above set, you would need 690 squares for the 10th tier.

There are tons of variatons on here, and the sew-along board for this has a couple linked in the first post, as well as lots of ideas from people who have completed variations on this.

The math for mine ended up being a bit more, as I opted for a 60" waist (I'm a big girl, and wanted this to fit a lot of people, even those bigger than me) The waist is usually elastic or drawstring to make it adjustable.

Good luck if you opt to make one! This is an epic project well worth all the time put into it, as well as the sheer weight of all that fabric when you're done. Swing on over to the sew-along as well, we'd all be happy to cheer you on as you go, or offer advice if you need :) linked in my signature....

This is so beautiful. I would never have that enough patience to do all that sewing.

I love this skirt! I really admire your patience - I would not be able to do all of that!

This skirt is sooooo amazingly beautiful.  I am getting married in April '12 and we are doing an entire day of fun and celebration like an old fashioned family picnic.  I am making a skirt like this to wear for all of the fun festivities before the wedding.  THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! This skirt is exactly what I was looking for on our special day!

Okay, I know this is from back in 2008, but I am just seeing this now, and I am OUTRAGED that ANYONE could criticize this beautiful skirt. I want to make it, and make it now. It is my new muse. It is beautiful  and wonderful in every way. I am ready and willing to speak reprimanding words to those that spoke ill of this wonderful thing. Ahhhh I love it so much.

This skirt is AWESOME! So awesome in fact that I just created a craftster account to tell you how awesome it is.  That those around you chose to criticize it says something about them(and nothing nice given your effort that went into this skirt) and not about the skirt.   Believe in yourself and trust what you think, you make gorgeous things.  *hugs*

totally agree with everyone who says that this skirt rocks, that you did an amazing job, and that you should be SO proud of your achievement (don;t think I'd have the patience to cut the fabric, let alone sew them together!).

Those around you who made negative comments are just showing how ignorant they are.

:D  This skirt is gorgeous.  I showed it to my 14-year old granddaughter, Hannah and she loved it too.  Guess what, I'm making one for her and will post pictures when it is complete.  We both loved the fullness and although I told her it would be heavy, she didn't care.  That is what we both love about it.  Hmmmmmmmmm..I will probably make one for me a well.  Thank you so much for posting this and the tute.  You rock!  Linda
