Title: Ipod mouse =]
Post by: stefferroo on June 17, 2008 06:43:08 AM
So two years ago my brother got an ipod for his birthday.  So what does he do?  Have it in his pocket so that when he runs to the car it falls out.  Obviously not on purpose, but that's what happened.  So he drove over his ipod and broke it.  Bad for him, good for me.  I decided to keep it because I would figure out something to do with it one day.  Inspired by this http://www.zieak.com/2005/08/08/nintendo-mouse/ (http://www.zieak.com/2005/08/08/nintendo-mouse/) I decided to turn it into a mouse.

So I basically tried to follow how the Nintendo mouse was made.  I took out the insides of the ipod, attached the mouse button to where the ipod would click, and tried my best to make it fit.  The inside of the mouse was bigger than the inside of the ipod, so I needed a way to cover the gap.  I accidentally switched the buttons, so when you clicked the left button, it actually right clicked, but changing settings on the computer fixed that.

The front.  That's a fake picture to make it look like the screen.  I just chose a song I like and changed the words from a picture I found =]

Here's in the process of making the mouse

Side view-ish

Back view with the hole cut out.

Let me know what you think!  Thanks

Wow, that's so inventive, and amazing work! You must have serious technical wizardry to be able to do that :D

this is pretty awesome.  My husband has an ipod he never uses because I bought him a Zune and he prefers that(suites me because I hate apple >:} ) It just sits there I doubt he'd let me do this to it though :O!

You rock!

This is the sort of thing I'd love to do, but the only test I ever failed was one on circuitry (granted, the teacher didn't count that test and made a remake test for us because he'd written the first one so poorly, but I still didn't do too well on that, either!), so it would take me forever to learn enough to do what you did. You are now my role model - you know, no pressure or anything. ;)

And thanks for the NES mouse link! :)

It actually wasn't that hard.  You just have to take off the mouse buttons, and attach wires to them so that you can put the buttons somewhere else.

Brilliant idea and execution!  I wonder if I could do that with my old diskman...  :P

(My iPod works great and I plan to keep it that way as long as possible)

'This rocks'! and as so, the button has been clicked. Way to turn trash to treasure!

Cool! How did you end up making the iPod big enough for the mouse's insides?

It was big enough length and width wise, but the mouse was too thick for the ipod.  The green thing on the side covers up the gap that was caused by the mouse.

That's really clever. Kudos!

(And for anyone wanting to make their own but not sacrifice their iPod, check ebay. I've seen many a "broken" or "as is" iPod auction there. Usually sold for parts and thus cheap!)
