Title: Old Timey Bathing Costume
Post by: nillakitty on June 04, 2008 11:15:30 AM
Well, I have finished my very first clothing sewing... and I've made me-self a Bathing Costume! Old-timey, no? We're going lake type camping at the end of the month & I had no bathing suit, and no wish to get into one, so... you know, this is what happened:

I used a couple different patterns: New Look 6705 for the top (I added the belt & belt loops) and 6707 for the shorts (I cut the pants short). I added the stripes with seam binding.

i've been SEARCHING for a place that made something like this. I'm a big girl and like the cover-up action of the old time suits. I'm not much of a clothing crafter but I'll have to try it I guess

FREAKING adorable.  I had to go swimsuit shopping and was just WISHING I could find something I liked.  Good Job- really really doesn't look like a beginner job- you have talent!

Love it! And I suspect that -- with so many people so sensitive to the sun -- this style is goingy to become "new timey" too.

What fabric did you use? GREAT job on the trim ;D

Awesome.

Did you make it out of lycra, or something much easier to work with?

I was going to ask about the fabric as well.

I LOVE this outfit.  I have looked for one similar for ages.  This would take the pain out of being in public in a bathing suit. :) Perhaps you should make and sell them!  It seems like you've got a lot of interest.

Sooo cute!  I've been joking for ages that I want a swim-burka.  I'm plus size and regular suits make me feel so self conscious, this is such a cute alternative!  I'd love to hear about the fabric you used and any other details you'd care to share.  <3

I would totally wear this. I hate commercial bathing suits, they never seem to fit the way I want them to. (Thus the life of a fat chick who has no boobs. lol.)

You've inspired me to try to make a bathing costume. lol.

You have no idea how pleased I am to see you wearing this. I've been debating making the Folkwear swimsuit to wear this year. It's not a desire to be anything than more comfortable in something that can be in the water and not expose every unforgiving curve of my body. I love that you made it in a non traditional tied shoulders and it just has some great detail. Fantastic job!!

I wish I'd seen your post earlier. This totally beats wearing a ratty t-shirt over an oh-too revealing swimsuit.

I am wondering what kind of fabric you used.  I'm pretty new to this whole sewing business and I would imagine that anything resembling actual bathing suit material would be horrible to sew.

I can't answer for the OP (but it looks like she used cotton) but swimsuit fabric isn't that bad. You need a zig zag foot if you don't havea  serger and pinning is a must. It's really no worse than sewing satin or something. It does slide, but honestly, not as much as satin or even polished silk.  I used to make up swimsuits on my straight stitcher too and had very few problems with machine or finished project.

Thanks so much for all the sweet comments!

For all the peeps wondering about the material: I used suiting (a heavy weight cotton blend)... I wanted it to be pretty sturdy to stand up to lake conditions.  The belt keeps the top in place, but you can see right down the top if I'm bending down, so I'll be wearing a cami underneath fer sure.  It stands up really well to water... I'll probably have more details after using it all weekend!

SO adorable!  It looks fantastic on you!  Now you need to have someone take pictures of you at the beach, holding a beach ball or eating ice cream on a boardwalk or something.  Reminds me of some pretty old photos I saw once at Coney Island.  Beautiful work!

It's one of the few I don't have. It's a bit more covering than what was done here and I've had issues with it's instructions, but I'd love to get a hold of it again.

The Folkwear suit http://www.folkwear.com/253.html is based on a 1890s Gibson Girl bathing costume (originally in WOOL!) And it's essentially a jumpsuit! Along with an optional separate skirt. I like the sleeves -- I sunburn really fast. And I cut out a version in a poly knit, with a center front zipper instead of buttons.

It remains a UFO :-[

I agree, the instructions are way too elaborate and misleading. Like most Folklore patterns, I think -- you have to be skilled and confident enough to figure the pattern out for yourself.

I have nearly every Folkwear pattern out there
( http://jaie.livejournal.com/1519380.html ) and its one of my number ones for just strange instructions. Part of the issue being that they seem to be u sing circa 1880 sewing instructions.

As far as other FW patterns, for the majority (including the new ones) the instructions aren't too bad, it's not so much you shouldn't be a novice sewer (I've taught several of these patterns in classes of novice sewers) as you need an overabundance of common sense. Be able to see that the curve on A matches the curve on X and they need to be together.

One major thing with the FW pattern is it's meant to be sewn in a medium weight fabric, not broadcloth or swim material. But crepe wool or seersucker. This causes some of the pattern's issues.

Reproduction (from the originals) sewing patterns from other bathing costumes are worse in instructions. But I have high hopes that Joanne at Laughing Moon will give us yet another fantastic pattern a little easier to understand with an even more authentic look.

before you described the fabric (suiting) as a heavy cotton blend.  i found suiting here
http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2958&PRODID=xprd728532
but joanns suiting is polyester.  i would like to make one of these for the beach...would the above fabric be ok for beach water?  (it says no chlorine bleach so i am ruling out pools)

(by the way, this is the cutest thing i have seen in a long time ;D)

edit:  i found two more fabrics that look like they might work. again, for a lake or beach because they both say no chlorine bleach (ruling out pools again).
http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2951&PRODID=prd40431
http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3320&PRODID=prd10006
just wanted to get some tips from people with more experience doing this...i'm kinda new to beach/bathing suit stuff
