Title: Pointed/"Elvish" hood TUTORIAL!!!
Post by: Phyxious on May 15, 2008 04:46:23 AM
Yay, I am finally posting this. Sorry it took so long. Although I don't even know if anyone is interested ;D

Aaaanyway. This is a tutorial for how to make a hood like this:

can someone tell me how to make pictures clickable? for now, use the links to see images bigger.

STEP 1:: To start with you need a basic hood pattern, something like this:

(ignore the text in it, it's so I know which pattern it belongs to)
If you don't know how to make a hood pattern, either trace a hood that you like, or draw a shape kinda like mine. The width should be at least half the circumference of your head + a few more cm if you want it deeper. The height should be half the measurement that you get when you measure over your head shoulder to shoulder + a few more cm so it's not too snug. The bottom width is the same as the neckline of the shirt you're attaching it too. And make sure you make it rounded at the top or it'll look weird when you wear it. The left side of this thing is the front just so you know :D

STEP 2:: If you want a lined hood, cut two of these from your fabric (if not, skip to step 3). I used a different colored fabric for the lining to make it more interesting. Remember to add seam allowance if you need it! My fabric was really stretchy so I only added 1 cm at the bottom where it's going to be connected to the shirt. Sew them together (right sides facing of course!) at the back using a stretchy seam of your choice. Now it should look like this:

(note it's facing the other way in this pic)

STEP 3:: Put some patternmaking paper (don't know what it's called in english, sorry...) on top of your hood pattern. Now this is how to get the pointed shape. You can either draw a line extending from the top or from the bottom of the hood. It will look a little bit different though. See these threads for reference:
From the bottom:
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=228954 (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=228954)
From the top:
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=246169

I like it best from the top because it looked a little twisted on the other one I made, although if you draw the line from the bottom the length of the hood will be the same whether you have the hood up or not. Whereas if you draw it from the top the hood will get shorter when the hood is up. It's a bit hard to explain, so ask me if you don't get it ;D

This is what you should be making:

So, in this example we are going to draw the line from the top. Make it a straight line as long as you want the hood to be. I made mine 45 cm, and it goes to my low back when down and about middle back when up. If you're unsure, it's better to make it longer since you can always shorten it. From the bottom of the hood, draw a slanted line to meet in a point with the other line.

STEP 4:: Cut two of these from your fabric. Remember seam allowance! Use the same as on the lining. If you didn't make a lining, add about 3 cm to the front of the hood so you can fold it under and make the edge look more finished. Now sew these two together right sides facing. Remember to not sew where it's supposed to be connected to the shirt!
This is what it should look like when cut out:

STEP 5:: Now try it on to see if it's a good length on you. If it's too long, sew it shorter. If it's too short: too bad, you're screwed! Just kidding ;) If you have enough fabric, make a longer one! Otherwise continue reading...

STEP 6:: Now you are going to sew the lining to the hood:

Put them right sides facing and sew the front seam. After that, turn inside out and press front seam. Then you can sew it down about 2 cm from the edge which makes sure it sticks together and looks better (in my opinion anyway :) ) This is what I mean:

Also you can sew small stitches at the top of the hood in the seams already there to make them stick even better!
Now if you didn't do a lining, just fold the 3 cm under the front edge and sew about 2 cm in. Or do a rolled hem. Whatever you like! ;)

STEP 6:: Now the only thing remaining is to sew the hood to your shirt! I usually mark the middle back of my shirt and start pinning from there. Use the back seam of your hood as a mark. Then either sew both seams to the shirt at once, or do it like when you sew bias tape. Sew one edge first right sides facing, then fold the other edge over and sew in the same seam. Did you get that? ;D

And the final product (again):

Hope you like it! It's my first tutorial so please tell me if you need more/less pictures, should I explain anything better, or am I overexplaining? etc... And I'd love to see what you make with it!

Have a great day!

i like how your lining is normal hood shaped and it's only the outside that is long. that'll keep down on fabric used and weight.
very nice! :)

Wish I had seen this sooner...this would be great for elf costume!

Thanks for the the tutorial - ut is clear and concise and agree with the above poster that having the lining like a regular hoodie not just cutting down on the amount of fabric needed, but also the bulk so the ends will be more swingy and fun like an elf hood should be.

Yay, thank you! My boyfriend fell in love with these when he saw something similar for sale on some site or another... So I figured since I couldn't afford one, I'd make him one, but I had no idea how I was going to do the hood. (I don't usually sew!) You're a savior!
