Title: Sustainable OOAK Fabric Wristlet with key and birds
Post by: lafemmedramatique on May 14, 2008 05:38:03 PM
I made this out of new and vintage fabrics. It was really fun to make. It's a pretty easy technique too (solvy and fabric bits) but I'm starting to try to branch out from your basic fabric cuff.

Hope you all like it!

Oh, that's lovely. Could you explain briefly how you did it, please?

Well, there's a really good tutorial somewhere on threadbanger (can't remember exactly which episode off the top of my head) but it's pretty simple, so I'll just explain it.

Basically, you just get Solvy (it's clear water solvable paper) and pin whatever fabric you're using in between the solvy (either 2 sheets if it's narrow, or you can fold the solvy over and make a fabric burrito if it's wide enough... depends on what package you buy).

Then you just sew all over it randomly with your machine. Make sure you take out the pins asap, though! I usually go over it once to secure the solvy/fabric inside so I can take pins out before i go crazy... if you don't, you'll end up doing what I did once and sew THROUGH a pin! I still have the head of the needle stuck in the colorful ball on the end of the pin!

From there, you can make whatever you want out of what you get. Fabric cuffs are popular to make, and since this was wider I just did a few folds and sewed up the sides. It's surprisingly secure, and 100% unique every time!

Thanks! I knew I'd read about it somewhere, but I couldn't remember where/how the solvy came into it! Definately going to try this when I get my grubby mitts on some of the water soluble paper.

I really like this!  It's very pretty and unusual.

Where do they sell Solvy, do you get it in fabric shops?  I've never heard of it.
