I <3 this swap but I think I'm going to have to skip a month too. I'm trying to keep my swap load light to avoid the swap burnout I got last year.

And I have a personal project or two on the table that I really need to focus on :)

I hope to be back next month!

Oh, I see targhee on your list....that is my latest fave fiber.  I just got 3 targhee raw fleeces and am loving the handle of this fiber.  Its got great loft and elasticity.

If you and I get  paired, this round or future rounds....I"ll send some your way!

I think I might try and work thru this book in the same manner too!  Another excuse to buy rare and interesting fibers!!

Lovely picture, misfit....now I want to get a pair of combs. Which ones do you have?  I have this cormo fleece I am processing, and when I card it on my drum carder, I am coming up with neps  ( cormo is superfine, and it is hard to card)

I think combing it might be the ticket...off to google combs!!

On the drum carder, you might want to try separating the locks more, feeding in from the cut side of the lock and carding s-l-o-w-l-y.

I use Viking combs (http://www.susansfibershop.com/combs.htm ) but I'm looking into double combs.

Targhee!  Sweet!

As I'm going through In Sheep's Clothing book, I'll take a lock of the fiber, (raw, washed and some roving or top) and tape it into the book.

The book is getting really thick.

I lovee the Targhee!

It is just soooo lofty and cottony.   ;D

I've been spinning some Babydoll Southdown...it's a little slow-going, since it's, you know, a down fiber and the staple length is pretty much nil, but it is really nice.

LaniCombs (http://www.lanicombs.com) are all the rage in these parts.  Maggie Casey recommends them.  They're pricey, but I used them in my spinning class and fell in love.  **Someday.**

I've got a pair of the indigo hound combs. Uh. I think they have 2 sets of tines. They work pretty well, though I think I would recommend getting the table clamp for them. Every time I've used them I think how much better it would be with a clamp.

Nicolassa, I've seen the combs you were talking about (I asked maggies opinion on combs...) and OH BOY are they fantastic. But expensive.

And I'm bummed out I missed spin night. My husband wasn't feeling well. I could have gone, but would have had to have taken both kids. And then got nothing done. But I guess it's ok because he bought me dessert to make up for it.  ;D

the combs in the pic are majacraft double row mini combs- they're really nice, the only draw back being they are mini combs, and if you order a pound or more of fleece at a time *like i do* you'll be combing forever! but i LOVE them, they're super nice, and match my little gem :) i checked out the lani combs website, they are nice, but oh-so pricey! i got the complete combing set which includes a comb holder, a clamp and little box to hold comb while clamping so as not to hurt the wood, and brass diz and threading hook for $140!!! that's a deal in my book-they're kind of hard to find though, you really have to look

I know, lamina, BUMWAD!!  Missed you!  But there was such a strong showing that they decided to continue the 1st Monday Spin-ins throughout the summer.  WHOOOO!

When I worked with clamped combs, I used two hands to hold one comb, so I don't know how in the world I'd manage to use one comb per hand and not impale myself!   Man, combs are scary things!     :o  The cool thing about the lani combs is that you can buy different "heads" and attach them to the handles.  That's assuming of course that you can afford different heads.   :D  Also, they are GIANT and can process just a ton of wool at a time.  **seriously tempted, but poor**

Yay we're getting some more first time swappers (so excited!)- Once I have misfitknits on the list that will be 3!! :D  Personally, I think fiber swaps are the best for first timers - but personally, I'd probably swap my clothes for fiber! Hahah!

ohhh...I've been picking the fiber first ( on my triple picker), which might be contributing to the neps!  I will try my next batch with carding from the lock. Thanks for the advice!

Maizie,
For finer wools, I hand pick and pile up the locks with all cut ends on same side.  I'll hand pick a small pile, run them through the carder, hand pick some more, card, repeat.

It seemed to me when the tips got fed in first, they would curl on themselves.

Good to know if you want a neppy yarn

I would so love to join this swap.  Maybe next month.  I'm just picking up my new wheel and hand carders today, and I only have a few pounds of various fibers to work with, so I don't know if I could get a good amount ready in time to send this month. :(

Lothruin - We'll be doing this again next month and we'd love to have you join then if you can't this month!! Most people swap about 1/4 pound so if you do want to sign up this month don't hesitate!

Misfitknits - We usually send around 4 -6  oz of fiber - don't worry about being a crappy swapper though!! This one is really fun because as fiber lovers its exciting to get any fiber!! Once you get partnered up talk to them about what they want and how much you want to send to each other. Really I love this swap because it (should be) is low stress!

Well..... I just picked up my wheel and all the extras the lady threw in, and the "little bit of mohair" she included is over a pound and a half of mohair locks and 10 oz of carded mohair.  If there's a partner out there who's interested in some mohair, I bet I could do something interesting with it in plenty of time, but that's probably all I'd have to offer this month.

Everything going smoothly now swappers? PM me if I didn't send you your partners info or something goofy like that!
In other news my Natural Dyeing instructor (yeah, that was a college course! haha) just opened up a new fiber store and I get to go shopping tomorrow------ hooray! I'm waiting on about 20lbs of fiber to be delivered to me but I hate hate hate waiting. I just really hope its better than the local yarn store that only carries some white or black roving and a touch of super overpriced mohair!

Was just at the PO and dropped off my fiber.

I worked from home today so I was able to take some time to card up a few batts for maiziemama.

What type of fiber??  20# for me is about 4-5 raw fleeces.  One of these days I need to get over this "I gotta take it from raw to scoured to dyed to carded to spun to [woven, knitted, crocheted, tatted, felted]"

.
.
.
.
.
.
.

Nahhhh!

What I'd really like to know is when I can sign up for the next swap (since this was my first).  After my package was delivered?  When this swap ends??

Yippee!  I love getting fiber in the post!  Can't wait!

And I am the same way....I love going from raw fleece to yarn!  I have about 25#+ raw fleece to process myself!  A cormo, two targhee, a cormo/romney cross, and a mystery fleece from a neighbor ( that is a gorgeous marbled grey brown!!)

I love the smell and handle of freshly washed fleece.  Can't get enough of it ( obviously!!)

Oh man, I HATE cleaning everything! But that is partially due to living in less than 500 square feet of space with another person, 2 cats and 2 birds. There is no room for cleaning any fleeces! Although with the Black Sheep Gathering coming up this summer i'll probably eat my words and buy a ton of fleeces (along with every other fiber in the world - I've got a problem! hahhaha)
All of the fiber I'm getting in that order is either roving, cut top, or bags of cleaned stuff. (Oh and its wool, silk, various plant fibers, etc...)

Oh, I'm so jealous! I missed all the shearings around here, but next year, I'd like to be able to get a fleece and process it all the way to a "finished" state.

And I'd like a drum carder, too, please, Mr. Santa.

That's not a bad idea, frankierevolver.  Round 2 tax return is coming. I could stimulate the economy with a drum carder purchase.  Hmm..

I just worry that if I get one, I won't use it as much as I could.

I never regretted getting a drum carder, or having DH build me a picker, or having 4 wheels or having too much fiber than I can possibly process/spin in a lifetime already (and looking forward to more!)

My job allows me to work from home one day a week.  I'm also doing fibery things this 'free' day at home.  Usually scouring fleece or picking it.  A person can get a lot done in a short amount of time!  (especially since I don't have that hour drive to work each way)

That's what I'm doing!!  Since my credit card is all paid off as of last month (YAY!!), I am being irresponsible and (barring dire emergency) buying a drum carder at Estes Park Wool Market next month.  WHOOP!

everything looks great for me, my partner is awesome!
No no no, my dear!  MY partner is awesome!   :D

I love saying "stimulate the economy" - ha ha ha. If we weren't planning on moving I would stimulate the economy by buying a Wii!
But!! Having a drum carder is really .. really.. nice. Hand carders are no fun in comparison. I don't use it as often as I "could" I suppose but I use it as often as I like which is even better! Besides, it also qualified as a business expense!

Hey, I've got a Wii!! It's too bad we don't live closer and I could swap you for a couple of hours. :)

Seriously - and especially if you have Mario kart!!!
I wish I knew anyone around here that spun and then I would have convinced them to go in halves with me on the drum carder or something - I'd do fine with having custody only half of the time!  (I probably use it under 6 hours a week.)

I just worry that if I get one, I won't use it as much as I could.
I find that once you have one, you use it. Even if it's odd and random throw things in the carder just to make you happy.

Dang, I almost forgot the wool market was coming up. Nicolasa, wanna run with me/wrangle kids?  ;D

Heck, yes!  Let's do it!  As you might guess, I think your kids are freakin' awesome.  I mean, Nanu gave me a high five and a bump the last time I was over, I do believe.   :D

The only children I have at the house are 14 & 15.  After spending the last 21 years being totally dedicated to my children (3 out of the house), I finally have time to accomplish things I like to do, and they don't mind.

I'm terrified of letting anyone near my drum carder - that thing has bitten me more times than I'd like to admit! I cover it with stuff when not in use because i'm afraid the cats will jump on it and seriously injure themselves!!

ha ha my 2 year old LOVES the drum carder! I actually let her run some finer through it recently. That was HYSTERICAL. Min isn't as sharp as others, you can actually run your hands across it.
I have a pict of that.

wooo hooo!!  I can't wait!

I'm so glad my boys are old enough to not only leave the carder alone, but to stay out of my fiber room.

Now, when I get the picker out .... that torture device is dangerous enough to spark their interest!

Alright I have a confession now - After all of this drum carder talk I really decided to take some time to consider how often I used it. :( Sadly that guy hardly gets touched in my house - I think I'm going to sell him. I'm not actually sad because I lived fine without it! And besides, there is a place here now with a whole studio where I can get my needed drum carder action going on in..
Just wanted to confuse you more lapoli! hahha.

i'm not worthy! .. i'm not worthy!

hehe.. ahhh.. wayne's world.. anyways

i did a spinning demo with my friend yesterday at a local farm while they were shearing the sheep, and they gave us both a fleece and a half, so we washed them up (as best as we could .. it was a lot of work.. and still needs more...) ... and now i have a bit drying on a rack in the tub... anyways.. the point of my babbling is .. .i'm just waiting for the fiber to dry and then i will be sending.. which should be tomorrow, because i don't think sending partially damp sheep's fleece would be a good idea... sorry nicolassa! .. i'll try and throw in a little extra to make up for the delay!

happy spinning :D

oOO.. AND.. i sold two of my skeins of handspun! .. my first sale ever! (well besides my spinning teacher, which i'm sure she was just being nice ;)   ) ... i had a grin on my face the rest of the afternoon!

oohh!! That's so exciting! Eau de Barn--ha ha!

I just ordered a pound of Babydoll Southdown fleece to process.. I am resisting temptation to order more until I know I like playing with dirty fleece. But, since it'll be the first time I try to actually make anything usable out of a raw fleece, I'm a bit scared.  :o (In a good, sheepy way, though)

Oh, oh, lapoli, I loves me some stinky fleeces!

Babydoll is so lovely!  The staple length is sorta short, since it's down and all, but it's so nice and soft.  Are you going to be carding it?

LOL! I know who I'll be a-buggin' when I need either emotional support to continue on or if I need help! :)

I am excited about the Babydoll fleece! It's from a sheep named Puddles and her staple length is actually a bit longer (3-4 inches) so the seller was offering a good price.  And yes, I will be carding (on the drumcarder I am inheriting from frankierevolver - woo!!!) and dyeing the wool. I can't wait!

Rock.  Awesome that the staple length is longer than usual!

Cleaning fleeces is so worth it considering that it cuts the price down so much!  And a pound is definitely manageable.  I like to clean a pound at a time.

I like to clean a pound at a time.

i wish i would have thought of that before i threw a whole fleece in the tub.

what do you do with the remaining until you have time to clean it?

I keep unwashed fleece in paper bags, stashed in a (committed) plastic storage box.  Or my car, which is bad, but sometimes you run out of stash room!   :D  Washed fleece goes in pillow cases until I figure out what to do with it.  Someday I'll overcome my miserly ways and buy a drum carder or wool combs.  (I'm seriously fixated on http://www.lanicombs.com (http://www.lanicombs.com)...my spinning instructor said they are the best around, and they're local!).  Right now I have handcards.  Slow, but pretty effective!

I spun a merino cross two-ply yarn with hand-carded rolags from wool I handscoured, and it was such a wonderful feeling to look at that yarn and know that I made it from the sheep up!  Lots of work, but well worth it!

i second that nicolassa! and i also bought a pound of the baby doll southdown from sapphire child, but i got the black young ewe's!!! it'll be my first black fleece! i usually buy of raw fleece at a time, it's easier to process, and i got to experience many different sheep breeds! ;) i haven't been brave enough *besides not having enough room for the stash of raw and washed fleeces i already have!!! the trunk of my small suv is currently full of bags of raw llama! :P!!*

Hope no one minds having a (very slightly) longer sign up! (I know you guys don't but i figured i'd give everyone a heads up!)
PS - I love working with you fiber addicts as a swap group!!!!!! You're all great and everyones been wonderful with communication and such! Yay!!!
