Title: Surf City Purse
Post by: annaramma on March 02, 2008 07:12:05 PM
My hometown is Santa Cruz, CA.

It's know for many things (beautiful beaches, an eccentric downtown, and the UCSC Banana Slugs), but Santa Cruz is best known for our boardwalk and surfing.

The beauty of the ocean and the lines of the old wooden roller coaster inspired me to make a felt bag representing Santa Cruz.

I started with a selection of felt, thread and two letter cut-outs (these Ds were only $1/each, purse handles can be so expensive!).

Painting the Ds a lacquer-red took several coats.

I cut out the basic shape of the bag and started stitching and cutting the designs for the wave and roller coaster.

After the felt pieces were assembled and the decorative stitching was finished, I added the rainbow lining (Santa Cruz's flag has a rainbow).

Finally, I stitched on the handles to finish off the purse.

Thanks for checking out my Surf City Purse!

Seriously I LOVE that you used something very unexpcted for the handles... bet it will hard to find D's now in the craft stores. I love the wave on the bag too.

I'm so glad you all like it.  The decorative stitching on the wave was the most fun, so I was happy it turned out.

Yay to you too, JaneSays13!

Os work too and, if you drill small holes for stitching, Cs as well.  There are also large brass rings in the embroidery section that can be painted or wrapped with ribbon, those come in almost any size you can imagine.  I used them when I made this purse: http://annaramma.typepad.com/annaramma/2008/02/inspiration.html (http://annaramma.typepad.com/annaramma/2008/02/inspiration.html)

I live in Santa Cruz! Awesome bag! When I saw the Surf City in the title I was wondering if it would be Santa Cruz or Huntington Beach, since they claim to be Surf City. Pff.  ::)

The purse is adorable, and I love the D's as handles, very creative!

I'm from San Diego and I have a few friends who are at UCSC for school. Santa Cruz is such an awesome city. It's so beautiful and has such a great laid back vibe.

Nice job representing it :)

Hooray to all my Santa Cruz peeps!

I was worried someone from Huntington Beach might take issue with the title.  C'mon, we're Santa Cruz, can't we all just get along?  We can share!

I saw this entry before but didn't realize it was for SC! I love it, I think it's super cool. I remember thinking last time "Hmm, I wonder if she got those Ds at someplace like Beverly's." Now I now I can find them in y hometown :D

I love the colors of the wave and I think you did a really good job :D Yeah yeah for SC peeps, we are indeed the Surf City :D

I lived in Santa Cruz for several years but had to move away a year and a half ago.  I miss it so much.  The fog, the energy, the sun, everything...Nice job representing such a wonderful place. :)
