Title: A hex skirt from a vintage blanket imag heavy
Post by: SunshinsCreations on February 28, 2008 06:27:45 PM
So I found a half done afghan bedspread weight thread ruffly 1930's blanket at a thrift store.  The original maker couldn't keep the tension even so I took it apart and sorted all the hexes and decided what I could do with the three sizes of hexes.  This is one of the things I have made thus far.  I have also made three size 5 kid shirts and one adult small shirt.  I still have enough hexes to make 1 more skirt and 1 more shirt both adult sizes.  what do you think   I am happy with it and I am happy with the skirt and think it looks real nice on.
Update
there is no lining on the skirt that is just the slip I picked for the day.  I don't like to line skirts that way I have the option of color change.  I wanted graphic patterns that day.  If I want just soft color I would have picked a pink, white, or ecru slip.

this is the large and small size there is one in between too

this is the adult shirt I made took a photo this morning

It's beautiful, I love it, you did a great job!

I'd keep one white, dye one black, and dye one blue!

Beautiful skirt!  It'd look really good with some black high-heeled boots, probably with a rounded toe and skinny two-three inch heels.

the skirt looks absolutely beautiful - that must have been a big afghan though, if you still have so much left over. I love to crochet, but the thought of making such a labor-intensive (read: time-consuming) project makes me kinda shudder. That's lovely you can benefit from someone else's frustration, hehe.

Great idea to break this down, and use it for clothing.

The pieces you've made are gorgeous, but I do have one question. I wonder if the skirt would look better with a different color lining?

Gorgeous though! :)

Beautiful skirt.  I also love the kids' tops.  I admire people who have the gift of seeing the potential of cast-off items.  Excellent!

to answer an email yes I made the rugs in the background of some of the photos.  They are 100% wool all hand braided.  Most of the wool is about 80-100 years old in those rugs I pulled it out of my great aunts basement and one of her friends basements.

The skirt especially is absolutely GORGEOUS!  So is it basically a "tube" of  joined hexagons?  It looks great on you!

yes it is basically a tube of hexes until you get to the waist area then there are chains that are a form of decreasing.

thanks for the compliment not sure what I think of my figure after 3 kids.

You are a very talented lady. I admire your skirt and the shirt and then when I know that you also made the rug, I have to look back to the photo and I also love your rug.

OM goodness, those are some beautiful pieces you made out of something that someone else might not have appreciated. great job. love the color accents on the child tops.
??? though, all that unused thread in the pic, did you find that at the thrift shop too?

yes  ;D they are all part of the same box of unfinished project.  I originally wanted to finish the blanket to keep but with all the wonky sizes I gave up :'( and unmade the item and made clothes instead.  I still have most of that thread :o.  As so far it has taken about 1 1/2 balls of thread to stitch all the hexes together and edge them

I have to say whatever you paid at the thrift shop had to be worth it. all that UNUSED thread plus the finished hexes. and i must say that you are ONE talented person wo have done what you did with the pieces. 2 thumbs up for sure.
p.s. sure wish i could find something like that. all i find is SMELLY old nasty yarn..no vintage thread or hooks. still look though, b/c you JUST never know!!!LOL

Wow, this is absolutely stunning!!  It makes me want to go search the thrift stores for old blankets...though I wouldn't really be able to do anything with them if I found them!  :D

This is all so lovely.  I love the flexibility that you've come up with with the skirt-by putting on a different color slip, you can change the whole look.  All the shirts are equally as gorgeous.
