Title: Buttoned-Up Legwarmers (almost spats) with basic tutorial
Post by: LauPre on February 28, 2008 09:54:08 AM
The weather is starting to get nice already (I saw new buds on the trees when I was out biking this morning!) but it's still a little chilly.  I've been neglecting my poor skirts and dresses all winter and I'm ready to start wearing them again.  Unfortunately, I'm the type who is always cold, so what's a girl to do?  Whip up some cute legwarmers to keep my ankles toasty!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3062/2298664608_593e609d9f_o.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3062/2298664608_593e609d9f_o.jpg)
Cute, right?  They're also really easy to make!  If you want to make your own, measure around your calf at about the height you want the legwarmer to come up to.  Cut two pieces of stretchy fleece as wide as your measurement and as tall as you want.  I went with 10inches tall.  Then cut out 4 pieces of a non stretchy lining fabric (I used cotton quilting fabric)  each one 3 inches wide and as tall as your fleece to support your buttons and button holes.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3138/2298664652_c17b869c1b_o.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3138/2298664652_c17b869c1b_o.jpg)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3250/2298664634_81dc1009bd_o.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3250/2298664634_81dc1009bd_o.jpg)http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/2298723182_fe1af051d1_o.jpg (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/2298723182_fe1af051d1_o.jpg)

Next, sew the lining pieces to the fleece at each side where the buttons and buttonholes will go.  Then all you have to do is add the buttons and buttonholes and you're done!

So cute! I might give these a try, but my brother says I have "Russian shot putter" legs.

At any rate, thank you for being so generous with the tutorial. =)

Absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to try these out! Hopefully I can figure out button holes on my machine.  :-\

So cute! I might give these a try, but my brother says I have "Russian shot putter" legs.

I am an only child, but from what I gather, brothers are dumb. Ignore him and wear what makes you feel good!

;D Those are so cute! I love them. They remind me of something Victorian.

(And I have to ask...Where did you get your shoes? I've been looking for that style and all I find are old lady shoes.)

Aw, Brothers can be cruel.  You shouldn't listen to him anyway. Being your brother means that he can't see you as sexy, so how could he know?  I do have to admit that the phrase "Russian shot putter" legs made me giggle, though.

;D Those are so cute! I love them. They remind me of something Victorian.

(And I have to ask...Where did you get your shoes? I've been looking for that style and all I find are old lady shoes.)

I've been in love with Victorian style lately, and these were a little bit inspired by women's boots and men's spats from that era.  I've been thinking about doing a pair of spats along this same line with a faux leather and a ton of little buttons, but without the stretch of the fleece it will be a bit tricky to get the fit right.

And the shoes are actually from payless.  It's a bit of an odd story on getting those.  I'd been searching for months for a simple pair of black heels that had to meet my criteria: a rounded toe, a strap, a heel that wasn't too high or too low, and the sole had to be kinda rubbery (not the slippery, loud click-click soles that a lot of heels have).  Months of occasional searching went by and then, on my way home exhausted from fabric shopping there was a problem on the bus (you don't want to know) and we all had to get off and wait 15 minutes for the next one... in the pouring rain.  There was a payless right there, so I went in to escape the rain, stumbled across these, bought them, and got back out just in time to catch the next bus.  They're made by American Eagle and were just $19.99.  you can find them here:  http://www.payless.com/Catalog/ProductDetail.aspx?&TLC=Womens&SLC=WomensDress&BLC=WomensDressTrendy&Width=Regular&ItemCode=58735&LotNumber=058758&Type=Adult&Popularity=823&DescriptiveColor=Black (http://www.payless.com/Catalog/ProductDetail.aspx?&TLC=Womens&SLC=WomensDress&BLC=WomensDressTrendy&Width=Regular&ItemCode=58735&LotNumber=058758&Type=Adult&Popularity=823&DescriptiveColor=Black)
I really like them.  They're comfortable even after running around town all night (and I'm a big baby about wearing heels).  I havn't had them that long, but they seem to be holding up pretty well, too.

These are awesome! I've been meaning to knit myself a pair of legwarmers, but I've lacked the motivation to commit to another knitting project. Sewing a pair, now that's a great idea! It'll give me a chance to improve on my sewing machine skills and see if the buttonhole option on my (elderly) machine actually works! I love the way these look! I can't wait to prance around with my own pair of almost-spats! Awesome!!! Thanks so much for the tutorial!!!

Really super cute!

What a fun idea - I totally have the 'russian shot putter' legs too - though I never called them that: it is a perfect description, basically it means I cannot wear bermuda shorts, EVER.  But I might have to try these anyway.  Thanks for the tute!

Those are adorable! I should make myself some cuz I am always cold as well. I have to say I was kinda creeped out by myself when I thought- "hu I bet she lives in portland too" and then it turned out you do. Your description of the weather is exactly portland, but then again I'm sure other places have the same thing.

cheers and happy sunshine today!

I'm so glad so many people like them.  I really hope you all will come back here and post me some photos when you make your own!

I have an idea to make these with some menswear tweed or plaid wool. Eep!

Ooooh, I love that idea!

I've been meaning to knit myself a pair of legwarmers, but I've lacked the motivation to commit to another knitting project.

I started knitting a pair of legwarmers last September and never finished them  :D  This was a perfect solution for me!

What the heck? Your machine sews buttons on for you? That is too cool.

Actually, That's just a neat little trick.  I just take off the presser foot, drop down the feeddogs and very carefully set the zig zag stitch to the right width.  It's tricky, though, and I've broken a couple of needles and buttons this way, but it's such a time saver.  (by the way, love your sig, but I want a prosthetic forehead on my real head ;D)

... "hu I bet she lives in portland too" and then it turned out you do. Your description of the weather is exactly portland...

cheers and happy sunshine today!
The weather has been so great lately, at first I was scared, "Where did the rain go? what is this bright thing in the sky?  what does it want from us?" then my memories of the sun returned ;D But now  I can't wait for all the trees to bloom, it's easily my favorite part of the year.

I saw these and I was like, "hey! someone made rockin' spats!" And I click on it and I find out they are in fact almost spats! It made me very happy. You are awesome. I rejoice in finding fellow lovers of random Victorian-ness. Love the look, love the literature!

Great fabric choice, too--it makes them look super classy.
And it's SO hard to find heels with the rounded toe...I have some very similar ones, but the strap is a lot thinner. Yours are way cuter! Mine are Italian or something but I picked 'em up at clearance for 20 bucks on a day when I was having bus issues...yay for random shoe finds! Extra hurrah because most of the time I don't want to pay more than 20 bucks for shoes, hah.

I really think these leg warmers would make plain black heels way more versatile...you could go all elegant gothy or cute little girl or just randomly awesome with the same pair of shoes, just slightly jazzed up.

Those are so very cute!!
And what a brilliant idea to make them with the fleecy fabric.
I am a big big fan of lagwarmers. I where them for about 15 years non-stop now so my collection is enormous but never to big for some cute new once!!
Thanx!!

I never thought that I would say this... but i LOVE your legwarmers! They remind me of one of the challenges on Project Runway where each deisgner had to take an old fashion (such as shoulder pads) and make it modern. Yours would have been the winner, IMO.

I typically do not like the legwarmer fashion, but I must say that I adore these. If I saw someone wearing these walking down the street, I'd definitely approve and gaze for a long while.  Many props to you.

Here's mine!  ;D

I started with 12" high x my calf circumference. I had to take them in quite a bit because I think I measured my leg too high, but the seam up the inside is no big deal.

I was also happy to learn how to make button holes on my machine, and it isn't as bad as I feared.

Way to turn the traditionally Flashdance into a chic accessory. Thanks so much for the tutorial! If I ever successfully make any I'll give you a buzz :D
