Title: Aran Tree of Life baby afghan :)
Post by: Buglady on February 11, 2008 10:28:58 PM
This is actually my first baby blanket. I've been knitting for ages - mainly socks and other small portable projects - but never had enough lead time for a blankie :) However, our neighbors kindly let us know several months ago that they were expecting, and yesterday their beautiful baby girl was born.

They have just redone their house in a very classic Mission style, with lots of natural wood and such. I really couldn't see them going for the standard pink-for-girls, blue-for-boys schtick, so I went with an Aran style.

I used Sirdar Denim Chunky and kind of made the pattern up as I went. Freeform cables are fun, although I do think one side of the tree is a bit bushier than the other! The leaves are knitted separately and sewn on. Finished size is about 30x36".

I think if I do anything like this again I will use something other than moss stitch for the border, as it got a bit wavy, but overall I am really happy with it. Hope the neighborinos like it too! :)

That's gorgeous. What needles (or otherwise) do you use for something that width?

Thanks! I forgot to say, I used a circular needle in 5mm size. I do almost all my flat knitting on circulars; because I learned on socks, I've never gotten the hang of long single point needles and I end up flailing dangerously :P (I can manage short sp's for things like scarves or dishcloths, but not the normal-length ones!).

Thanks! Cables are really a LOT easier than they look, and I like doing things freeform. (Translation: I have ADHD and can't read patterns anyway, heh).

I know I didn't come up with the idea on my own - I remember seeing a freeform Aran tree somewhere on the Interwebs, possibly on Knitty, but I couldn't find it when I searched, so then I made it up from there.

I don't think I could say anything that would convey the amount of awe I'm having that you not only knitted this gorgeous gift, but also free-formed it.  Congratulations on a project well done.  I'm sure your neighbors will be touched and amazed at such a thoughtful present.

Hee. I like my plan of borrowing other people's babies and kidlets to play with them and knit for them - then give them back when they get tired  ;D

I am presuming you didn't write the pattern either.  The blanket is just stunning and I have a coworker who will have a baby in a couple of months.  It looks like the branches are i-cord because they are so puffy, but I don't if that would work?  Anyways, it is absolutely gorgeous beyond belief (and I love tree of life stuff).

As far as needles.  I learned on straights but I primarily do all my knitting on circulars now.  As you know, you aren't missing anything with the straight needles.

As everyone has said, that is so beautiful.  The first thing I thought when I saw it was "that is a piece of art."

And what a great match for a mission style house.  The natural design and yarn were perfect choices.

I thought it was the tree of Gondor from LOTR for a moment. But I like it no matter what. I love things with trees on them. :) And even more so if they're sort of plain and earthy like this.
Great job! I totally love how simple (but not) this is!

maybe you had seen the tree of life afghan from lion brand's website http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/70122AD.html

they also have tree of life sweater (with the free cable chart) http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/kwe-treeOfLifeSweater.html?noImages=

but your tree of life , in my opinion, is much much nicer looking.

Oh my gosh, you guys, I'm just blown away by all your kind comments. You've saved the day - I needed to come home to this, having had a run-in with my statistics instructor who made it pretty clear she thinks I'm a useless idiot, which is not exactly the kind of morale boost one needs right before the midterm exams  >:(

I think I must approach knitting, especially cables, very differently than most - I see a someone asking how I kept track of the cables, but I just had a picture in my head of more or less how I wanted to to work, then on each row I moved the cables whichever way it seemed they needed to go. Trees being something organic that grow in a predictable manner helps too - I branched the cables off the trunk just as if I were drawing a tree. I can see the cables and how they relate to each other, which may not hold for everyone - I know my mom is baffled by them, but she can do intarsia and I can't!

To be honest, I have trouble following patterns (charts are OK) and I guess I learned pretty early on to think of knitting in terms of the three-dimensional final object rather than stitch by stitch. This also had the handy side effect of letting me look at pretty much any knitted item and (eventually) figure out how to build it. I still hate to swatch though!

Still waiting for neighbours (even just Dad) to get home so I can give it to them!

Update: gave the blanket to Neighbour New Dad. He loved it; said it was perfect for the style of their house and loved the soft and cozy feel (I highly recommend cotton/wool blend yarns, by the way - best of both worlds!). And he is just SO thrilled to be a dad, it's wonderful to hear him. He is absolutely besotted with his Baby Girl, and I can tell he's going to be one of those super-protective dads :)

He was actually more amazed by the socks I put in the box for New Mom (she hasn't seen her feet in a while, so I figured some crazy striped socks would be nice :)) - guess he didn't know I could knit those, and I bet I know what to give him for Christmas next year!

I will go see the baby on the weekend, I think, after the family has had some time together. I'll ask if I may take a picture to share!

Aw, thanks! I don't think I'm a genius - maybe more along the lines of a savant... heh. I do have a tendency to see things holistically rather than in discrete pieces, which can be both a blessing and a curse. You know the saying about not seeing the forest for the trees? Well, I only have two settings: super satellite view of the forest, where I can see all its parts and how it relates to every other forest, or super microscopic focus on ONE tree (and I must count and identify and catalogue every single bug and piece of moss on it). Nothing in between. I drive my instructors NUTS, needless to say.

I think you will enjoy cables. Basically it's manipulating the surface of the fabric by moving stitches over each other. It is one of those things that is hard to explain but once you see it, or follow a step by step pattern to see how it works, you will go "AHA!! That's how that works!!" and then you will cable everything in sight. Or maybe that part was just me, heh.

A lot of the designers at Knitty.com have a similar approach to mine (organic etc), and several of them explain it a lot better than I can.

Coming back to this late, sorry! No, I'm afraid I didn't write anything down that resembles a pattern... The cables look puffy because they are 2 stitches carried over 1, or 3 over 2. That makes them stand out from the background more than if the cables were 2 stitches crossed over 2, which is more common.

I-cord would work really well too, and it would let you lay out your branches and try different arrangements with them. That's a great idea! (I would never have the patience to knit that much I-cord though! Maybe if I had a spool knitter though... hmmm... and then you could do contrasting colours... rainbow tree! OK, I totally have to stop thinking about this now or I'll be up all night.)

Truly a gorgeous piece.  I've seen a similar pattern online somewhere, like you said, but to think you just made it up as you went along...WOW.  Kudos.  The moss stitch border is quite nice.  And I agree with another poster that it "almost looks ancient."
I'm starting my own baby blanket for a niece/nephew and get so tired of the blue & pink patterns.  This one is amazing, though I doubt my skills are quite ready for something of this magnitude.  :o

wow!  I'm anxious about cables, but will definitely start on something simpler than this.
:)
great job ... it looks almost felted, or embossed, in the first picture ... it's so beautiful.

Thanks :) As I said to someone else, you'll love cables once you try them. Instant gratification!

I think the "embossed" effect is from the side lighting I used to make the cables stand out. The first pic I took was just blank!

I became a member her specifically to tell you how beautiful your tree is. I was googling knit trees, and have looked at many over the years. Your tree is hands down the most beautiful example of a tree I have ever seen. Many tree designs can look almost menacing. Yours does not leave that impression at all.

You should sell your design. I know I wouldn't hesitate to buy it :)
