Title: My Tape Wallet
Post by: freepepper on January 21, 2008 12:59:03 PM
I had made one of those tape wallets back in the summer that I've seen online, but I found it problematic to use with loose change. So I constructed another one to my own specifications. I extended the width of the wallet using additional fabric, and added matching lining. Also, the zipper doesn't go all the way around, just enough from side to side that allows me to open it without having change spewing out. I also added a keyring tab on the side, just so that when I do find my damn keys, I can attach them and not lose them and not lose them again.

:) this excites me to the point of wanting to shout OH YES!!
a) because it's phenomenally cool, and you should be very proud of your improvements to the ubiquitous model
and b) because it's the golden hour of glen miller, and he was truly the handsomest tunesmith I've never met

well done!
speak to you soon.

That's really cool :) I love the green and pink together, if you saw them separately you wouldn't put them together, but I think they look amazing!
Like others have said, is there a tutorial anywhere? I'd love to make one of these as my first non-knitted actual thing that I could use.

This is one of the best Ive seen. Excellent modifications to the originals! How well does the tape cassette stay on? Did you use a glue?

hey all,

Thanks for the comments, so nice to hear people like it! I will try and put up a tutorial on the next one I make, which should be soonish...im still trying to get the method down to a science...just a couple quirks to figure out. It took me a while to figure out how to do this one, and suffered a few cuts on my fingers as a result  :-[

This is really great. The colors are the great, the little keyring tab looks great, the colors-everything!

Awesome improvement on this wallet!  I also had the same problems with loose change in my cassette wallet... so I only use it for cards now, while my coins sink down into the depths of my purse.  I've thought about trying to make a coin purse out of a cassette with the little .. coin purse fastener... thing.  (http://images.jupiterimages.com/common/detail/90/93/22189390.jpg) but I have no idea where I'd get one.

Anyway, enough going off topic... I love what you've done, and you've done it in a very professional looking way!

Title: Re: My Tape Wallet
Post by: freepepper on January 22, 2008 03:13:00 AM
Hey all. Wow...I'm really surprised at all the comments...this is great! Thank you all so much! Um, to answer a few questions....

1. I am planning a tute...but like i said before, the way I did has been a bit complicated and dangerous...I just need to smooth this out. It shouldn't take too much time, because I make these alot, and am getting better/quicker each time. I just don't want to be the cause of people cutting themselves

2. What I can tell people is the materials I have used to make it...really sharp knives, wire clippers, hobby files, pliars, superglue [not hot glue, it's too globby for this], fabric glue, thread, and lots and lots of math! Those who are mathmatically impaired, don't fear! I failed math...plenty of times, but I still managed to figure it out, kind of. It took alot of trial and error. What I did though, is once I figured out the math, I made a pattern on paper and cut out the shapes I needed...which is obviously tons easier.

Thank you all again for your interest and kind words :)

This is the most wonderfully creative masterpiece since Star Wars! I definitely hit This Rocks. I'm so excited for the tute because I've been wanted to make cassette wallet from a Def Leppard and Backstreet Boys tapes but I just wasn't creative enough to figure out how to make it work when it came to change.

Hey, freepepper,
About all of those sharp objects used for this project...I was trying to make one (still not done  :() but my hubby, seeing me struggle and fearing I'd try to talk HIM into filing down all of those funky odd bits on the inside of the "cracked cassette", he got out his handy dandy Dremel tool and we went to town.  Discovered that it removes all those little sharpies, but you have to run the Dremel at high speed (not low speed  'cause it'll melt the plastic which then sticks to your bit - ask me how I discovered that), and use one of the filing bits that looks kinda like red pumice.  Hope you can use this info.
Looking forward to the tut!
~~Novena

I think I love you  8)

This is a very nice project, I really like how you added the fabric around it to fatten it up.  I didn't like the look of the skinny plain ones that were just zippers & cassette.

On the downside, I haven't listened to a tape for so long I don't think I have even a single one anywhere in the house that I could cannibalize.  Drat!  To the secondhand shop!

When I saw this, I fell in deep love for it.  :D Just Kidding. BUT I did like it enough to make my own. Sadly my camera is not working at the momment, but i'll describe it; mine has a light pink cassette and it has some french name on it. The fabric I used had a light yellow back with pastal colored dinos on it. My zipper I got from an old halloween costume and one of it's tracks is light green and the other is a light blue. (I was a whale for halloween ;D 8) ) I had a small charm that had a heart on it and that was that. I absoulutly AH-DORE  my dino wallet, thanks for the creative idea!  :)

How bizarre! I created my own version of the zipped wallet with sides on it (its a bit different to this and the original zippered one) as I found the original attempts too flimsy and coins kept failing out whenever I unzipped it.

I made some deeper ones also using different fabrics which I like also.
