Title: Oreo balls/bombs/delicious bits of bliss
Post by: sweets4ever on January 05, 2008 06:29:21 PM
I've noticed a few recipes for these around Craftster, so I'll include the links to as many as I can locate. :) :)
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=164704.0
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=216262.0

I didn't follow either recipe precisely because, by the time I got to these, I was too tired to measure anything. :D  Here's what I did, though...

  • Crumble a bag or a bag and a half of Oreos into a bowl.  I used my Kitchenaid mixer for this project.
  • Drop one or two packages of softened Philadelphia cream cheese into the bowl.
  • Let the mixer to do alllll the work.  I let it mix until it was thoroughly blended into a disgusting bowl of thick mud-like sweetness.
  • At this point it was bedtime, so I let the bowl chill in the fridge overnight. ;D
  • In the morning, I rolled out all of the balls onto a cookie sheet covered in wax paper.
  • Chill the tray of balls (until lunchtime when I had another break :D).
  • Melt chocolate in double boiler (glass bowl on top of a metal sauce pan with simmering water on the stove).
  • Take the chocolate off the stove and rest on a hot pad.
  • Throw (not really...more like a gentle toss) a few balls in the chocolate bowl at a time and flip around with a spatula until thoroughly coated in chocolate.
  • Remove balls, one at a time, from the chocolate bowl to their final resting place on the wax paper cookie sheet.  I used a wooden skewer for this.  It worked GREAT!
  • After all the balls are coated and resting the sheet, let them cool again in the fridge.

That's it!

For fun and to make them look a bit more like evil bon bons, I decorate them with melted white chocolate.
  • Melt white chocolate in double boiler.
  • Pour into Ziploc bag
  • Snip teeny tiny corner in the bottom of bag (to serve as a piping bag)
  • Drizzle, drizzle, drizzle

I don't like to waste supplies, so I drizzled out the extra white chocolate onto wax paper to make fun plate garnishes.

Tips!
  • All of the chilling might seem excessive, but it's really necessary.  After mixing, the goo will be too soft to roll into balls and after rolling the balls, the balls will be too soft to dip.  Chilllll!
  • I tried using a toothpick to fish my balls out of the chocolate (erm...uh...), but it was too flimsy and breakable.  The wooden skewer was fabulous.
  • Don't try to eat too many at once!  They are VERY rich.  I ate half of one at a time with tall glass of milk.
  • And lastly... enjoy! :)

These look and sound yummy-lishus ... do you have to keep them cold (i.e., if you take them to work, can you leave them out for munching), and can you freeze them?

Wow, these look great!  Would you mind answering some follow-up questions?

Quote

  • Drop one or two packages of softened Philadelphia cream cheese into the bowl.

Three-ounce packages or eight-ounce packages?

Quote
  • At this point it was bedtime, so I let the bowl chill in the fridge overnight. ;D
  • In the morning, I rolled out all of the balls onto a cookie sheet covered in wax paper.
  • Chill the tray of balls (until lunchtime when I had another break :D).

What would be the minimum chilling time necessary for each of the two sessions?

Quote

  • Melt chocolate in double boiler (glass bowl on top of a metal sauce pan with simmering water on the stove).

Semi-sweet chocolate?

Thanks!

I would think you have to keep them fairly chilled or room temp (not good for an outdoor picnic).  I'm sure they're okay to be set out indoors for munching.  I put them in containers and delivered them as holiday presents, so they were out for a while and still great.  The cream cheese is protected in the hard chocolate shell pretty well, I think.

those look like a little piece of heaven on a plate.

Aw, thanks!  I almost put that as the subject line... piece of heaven on a plate. :D

Three-ounce packages or eight-ounce packages?  I'm glad I was in picture-taking mode for some other projects otherwise I would have no idea. :D  I went back & checked the photos and they are 8 oz packages.

Semi-sweet chocolate?  I actually used this stuff called Baker's Dipping Chocolate.  My friend works at Kraft distribution center, so he buys stuff by the case at cost.  Luckily, I'm his only friend that bakes and I reap the benefits often. ;D  You can see them in the back of this photo.  They come in little microwaveable tubs, but I just dumped a bunch of the tubs into the double boiler (faster than microwaving tiny tubs at 30 second intervals).

The white chocolate was just some of the Nestle white chocolate chips.

Thanks!

Thanks!  Don't mind ONE bit! :)  Answers in red above. :)

Yum! I've made something like this before, but with the absurdly expensive chocolate wafer cookies instead of Oreos... I'm trying Oreos next time! :D

yum yum yum!! those look so awesome!

when you dump the oreos in, are you using the whole cookie, or do you take the filling out first?

Oreos are totally the way to go.  Not to say that I didn't love my recipients enough to spend absurd amounts of money on them, but yeah... :D

Thankie!! :)

I crumbled the whole bag up...cookies & filling all together.  I did read on another thread that someone removed all of the fillings first, though.  I didn't find it necessary since they were all going to end up mushed together anyway.

would it be a little less rich if you didn't use the filling maybe? oreo filling is SOOO sugary! (and yet i still only buy the doublestuff oreos!)

i don't know if it would make enough of a difference to be worth the hassle though.

It might be!  I think it's a combination of that sweet filling with the cream cheese that makes them so evil.

Love  these!

you can also dip in peanutbutter flavored coating too....ooo aaa
I mixed peanut butter chips with a  little Crisco and a cup of peanut butter and a few tablespoons of powdered sugar.   just heated in a double broiler until smooth.  its  not quite as sweet and rich as the chocolate ones.

have also used the cherry chips melted down .  none of  us  liked  that one though.

tried the butterscotch it was OK  not great just too sweet.

the Carmel coating is good but too gooey so you have to figure a way to make the Carmel harden up like the chocolate does. I am still experimenting with that.

WOW, so many possibilities!!  It's probably bad that I'm craving all of those at nearly 8 in the morning now, too. :D

The baby is craving them...really!

And, I have to go to something tomorrow night and bring a "snack" so I have the perfect excuse to make some of these! And the best part is, that I'll be able to eat a few, but then I'll have to share them, so I won't eat the whole batch myself ;)

madith nutter butters(cookies)  and added just a bit of extra peanut butter when mixing everything. (sorry can't say exact. I jsut kept adding cookies and peanut butter till I liked the consistancy)   they are SO  sinfully good I think I should never make them again!   wow those  were great!

I just finished making my first (but not last) batch! And, I only ate 4  ;D

I had a slight problem melting the chocolate in the microwave...who knew that if you overdid it, it wouldn't melt anymore??

So, I drove on over to the local craft store and picked up some candy melts. When I opened the package, I realized I had bought mint flavored ones by mistake. Oh, happy accident!! De-lish!

So, I hastily packed away a dozen for craft day with the gals on Monday, and packed up the rest for my event tonight (family night at my astronomy club, so I think I'll call them "Chocolate Asteroids"). There had better not be any leftovers...otherwise I'll end up eating them for breakfast ;)

I tried them but mind you I don't like the chocolate mint together thing. BUT the cream cheese does make the mint flavor less apparent.  you can however use  half regular chocolate and half mint choclate chips for teh dipping and it perks it right back up where most folks like it.

Oh. My. Goodness.
I'm doomed.
Chocolate and mint is one of my favorite flavor combinations.

I made mine with mint chocolate  candy melts on the outside and they were heavenly...just the right amount of mint!

Probably the only time I ever made anything that got eaten up completely...

i made mint ones, with white chocolate covering and mint chocolate chip decoration, and they didn't taste very minty, but that might have been because of the white chocolate. I also made some with the peanut butter oreos that my bf loved

So...  I have been spying this recipe for quite some time, and decided to make them for the LD weekend at a friend's lakehouse.  i made 2 batches - mint oreo <double stuff> with mint chocolate <I used a tsp of mint extract>, and regular oreos with white chocolate.  While I was making them, I had issues chopping up the cookies in my blender, and started jabbing the regular oreos with a BLACK plastic spoon while the blender was going.  Not a good idea.  One jab too many, and the spoon turned into a bit of a spork.  Ut-oh.  Yeah... try finding bits of black plastic spoon in black crushed oreos!

They were a HUGE hit...especially the mint ones.  And yes, plastic bits were found by about 3-4 people... it turned into a bit of a game, actually.  Luckily, all teeth remained intact!

Any tips on getting the perfect crushed oreo?  I don't have a kitchen aid mixer...  so I was thinking of pounding the crap out of them with a rolling pin next time!

I usually just put them in a plastic zip top bag and take my meat pounder and pound them. It works well.

I made some a couple nights ago and they were so good! The only thing I did different was- I store them in the freezer. They taste so much better frozen to me. Perhaps it's a consistency thing.......I feel like if they are room temp its just pre chewed oreos dipped in chocolate. ew.

I made these a while back.  I was so impressed by how easy it looked and how Delicious they looked.  Well, I had issues with the chocolate.  It was very thick and kept melting the Oreo part so I popped to the store to get another brand of chocolate...all in all about 15 minutes and when I got back my kids had cleaned the bowl out.  Haven't tried them since.  (And my kids are not 3 year olds).  That is my adventure into Oreo truffles.lol ;D

Ommm nom delicious looking!

What's great for me is that since Oreos and many organic versions of chocolate sandwich cookies are vegan, this would be so easy to make vegan with Tofutti cream "cheese" or other faux cream cheese. I want!

Oh, these are delightful. A friend of mine made these a while back and since then I've been itching to find a recipe and try it for myself. I'm actually making some right now for a birthday party on Saturday. I had some trouble with the chocolate- couldn't get it as pretty and smooth as I'd like it- but they still taste magnificent and really, when something is that tasty, doesn't it kind of compensate for the lack of perfection in appearance?
Yeah, I thought so, too. :) Thanks so much for posting this!
