Oooh.

I've recently gotten into steampunk. I will have to think about this.

I worry that I don't have enough metal or glass skills to pull off something cool enough.

You don't have to use metal or glass to be steampunk
Check out the suggestions I've put up - there are two knit ideas there

And you can always make stuff that looks like metal or glass

I would LOVE to do something steampunk, I am currently on a victoriana/steam punk craze...I just hope I can think of something to make my partner...will check my stash and probably come back later...because I can't resist steampunk...

Just stalking for now :D I only discovered from lurking on the discussion thread for this swap that this genre had a name! I love Victoriana and those retro-style futures, alternate universes... and airships :D I'd love to craft steampunk stuff but I don't think I'm "outwardly" steampunk enough to use anything I'd get back. Guess I can volunteer if anyone ends up needing an angel (though I sincerely hope they don't!)

Awesome! I should start thinking where I could get some nice parts. Does anyone know if your average wall clock has any nice pieces when you smash it open? That way I could go to a thrift store and pick up a whole bunch of old clocks.

I am filled with equal parts trepidation and delight-I've never tried to make anything steampunky yet.But I'd never forgive myself if I wimped out on this swap. And it's nice to see so many Girl Genius fans! I only wish I didn't wear glasses,so I could have goggles, too :(.I just made my daughter a G.G.tote.Well,all I did was use a black canvas tote bag,and paint the words Girl Genius large on one side, with bronze paint, also using an interesting old brass button to dot the i.I wanted to embroider some gears on it,but ran out of time. She liked it anyway.
I like the idea of taking clocks apart for the gears and innards.Goodwill, here I come! I know we're a long way from having partners, but that's something I'd like to have to play with regardless.
This is going to be fun!

Happy Christmas Everyone btw!

(an aside:) You have no idea how much crap my family gives me for saying "happy Christmas" instead of "merry Christmas".  I've just watched far too much British television to say "merry" anymore!

So, happy Christmas!

Since I bookmarked the discussion thread I've been meaning to look up this artist I saw in an old Bead and Button magazine I have because I thought her found object jewelry would be appropriate inspiration for this swap (especially the Talisman collection):

I think on Saturday or Sunday. I'm so impatient I already started crafting though. Hopefully the projects I've made will fit my partner's steampunk-ness.

By me, (UK, Greenwich Mean Time) it's still only the fourth, so signups are open for another day :D I should think Saturday would be fair to take in all the time zones...

Lovin' that website. So many ideas! I can't wait for partners either, just so I can narrow them down a little!

Ooh,I can't wait for partners!I'm holding off making anything until I can do some stalking.Ever since the time I couldn't wait, and made a really cool pendant, only to find out my partner had metal allergies :-[(I turned it into a magnet, instead)

Hmm,I wonder,steampunk detective,anyone? Er,I mean,private inquiry agent,of course.Magazines of that period were full of serials,were they not? I can see it now-Dr.Gideon P. Livesey,Esq.,and the Dirigible of Doom!
I may have to write that...

Question-where do the rest of you find gears? Aside from taking apart watches and clocks.I perused the hardware ailse and found zip.
I did have a thought tonight-spirograph! It's full of little plastic gears.I can't take my daughter's set away from her,but I could "borrow" a few to trace,or ink and stamp.Worth a try...

bookstorebabe - i read the difference engine and the diamond age, which isn't really necessarily at all steampunk but somehow kind of is anyways. oh, and i'm about to watch the city of lost children for the bajillionth time.

i think i'm just in crafting withdrawal - i haven't made anything since before xmas. i better go crochet something or i'll get the shakes. ::)

There was a pair of $200 mother-of-pearl opera glasses at one of the stores that I had to tear myself away from.  The practical side of me was like, "seriously? opera glasses? when would you ever use those?" and the craftster/steampunk side of me was like, "oooh shiny! buy now!"

Opera glasses? They are just fancy binoculars. You could use them for watching the skies from the bridge of your airship...

You don't need a clock for gears ;) I just dismantled an old (not REALLY old but probably Seventies, falling apart and ugly) 35mm camera from a charity shop and found gears and all sorts of cool weird parts. Watch out for any mechanical or electronic stuff that's reasonably old (but not necessarily a lovely antique) and heavy - metal gears add serious weight to stuff! Even modern electronics have cool random parts in though. I dismatled my (broken) MiniDisc player over Christmas and made this (http://talyra.deviantart.com/art/Found-Objects-1-73974409) out of the motors. And I love shiny circuit boards. So pretty.

And of course I will post, hopefully inspirational, photos of the party, I am hoping to dress the house in a vaguely steampunk way as well if I have time. I am officially obsessed!  8)

I have one item started! And plans drawn up for the second.Grrr, stupid printer doesn't work, file doesn't want to download, must go to Kinkos, grumble. On the bright side,I can then  print 2 copies, and make one "something" for myself, too! ;DCan't wait to get my printouts and get started;it's going to be something fun!(crosses fingers)

I got the container of watch gears I ordered-trouble is,they're so incredibley tiny,I don't think I can use them for the craft I had planned.I think I'm going to make myself some delicate earrings later on.Partner doesn't have pierced ears,or I'd make her some, too!
Putting my thinking cap on to come up with another item to use them on...hmm....

That said I went to the hardware store yesterday and returned with a rather random bunch of items that kind of made my guest and housemate stare confused at my insanity. I was dubbed as trying to do a mystery meal but with hardware... ::)

I now have a pile of seemingly innocuous items that need to be made into 'stuff' we'll see how I do.

Seriously, no one should let me alone in JoAnn Fabrics.  Or, just give me blinders.  Today's adventure was like, "lalalala get stuff for shazrasha I know exactly what I want and can go straight to it and get out of here quickly--ooo jersey's on sale."

So be sure to look for some summer dresses coming from me soon in the clothing board.

(I did get stuff for shazrasha too, though!)

I have this problem in craft shops, hardware shops and in the Aussie equivalent of $2 stores. I go in and come out with a random selection of stuff I wasn't looking for because I see it and think "I don't know what I'm gonna do with it but this would be cool for crafting." Ah well, its all good fun. :D

I've now taken apart three objects to create my first idea.
I hope it works - there's mess all over the house  :P

I have had the fun today of buying a clock solely to dismantle it.

After a few false tries I figured out the way in. The pieces are small, but will suffice.

Hurrah!

So I was finally able to go to the craft store yesterday to get some random bits I needed. I ended up leaving the house late, and had to run for the bus. I managed to whack my hand on a car's side mirror, and now my left thumb is so swollen and sore that I can't use that hand at all.
Some people just don't understand how dangerous crafting can be.

This is the truth. I cut my thumb accidentally with a pair of scissors once. It was deep and took ages to heal and it bled all over my art work :'( Hope your hand heals quickly.

If you do that, please, please take pictures. Or put a video on Youtube. Seriously, I can't crochet with my HANDS, so crocheting with your toes would be seriously impressive. ;) :D

Everything I've bought to take apart has had plastic hardware inside! NOO!  I've given up in the gear department ;)

You know what a really good "cheating" source of metal gears is, specially if you only need one or two? Tin openers - the hand wound ones. Try the dollar store - I got mine in the UK equivalent, the delight that is Poundland. Admittedly, if you need a lot it could get expensive cos you only get about three, and it takes some prising to get it all apart, and you really have to watch the cutting blade, but boy do they look good. Otherwise, depending on your project, you could just spraypaint the plastic ones with metallic paint.

Finally started rather insanely on all three crafts at once  :o
Am beginning to wonder if I am sane and/or capable of pulling this off.

So far I don't have a gear in sight...but plenty of brass accents and random bits of things...

Just amused my DB by picking up one of the items I was investigating and going "Oops, I only wanted to see how it worked..." while holding the two broken parts.

Now I can use it for one of my small items instead  ;D

About halfway through my large piece (fingers crossed it workout the way I want). Three quarters of the way through my first small piece and have most of the pieces for my second small piece. I am really looking forward to this one and am going to make one for myself too. ;) I had hoped to make a Sterling engine as my large piece but I wouldn't get it done in time. I'm going to make a coffee cup one for myself sometime. :D

??? :P ::) Although I am going well I like to have plenty of time up my sleeve. I kept thinking the send-out for this was the 21st - that was the send-out for the Miyasaki swap, which I sent early. Then I actually looked at the title for this thread and my brain went back into gear. I think it was the fact that we were waiting for both swaps to happen for so long and then they were so close together, I got really confused. :P

I've been working on so much stuff lately for my business, that I keep changing my mind on what I want to make. Last week I made something like 6-8 tricorn hats.. So I'm not going to make another one right now. Lucky for me my swap partner loves my hats :D So crafting for them will be easy once I decide on what I'm going to do.

(yes I work all weekends and after my day job on hats, I have no life currently)

Got one piece basically done, but I want to add some... embellishment to it. Shouldn't take too long. I've gotta test some stuff tonight before I start on the third. The first thing I started is taking longest, but that's pretty much because I'm at a dull, repetitive stage in the making of it and I keep wanting to work on the other things instead of do the repetitive bit :D Once that bit is done I've no doubt it will start "speaking" to me again and I will be able to finish it.

man, someone just doesn't want me to get this swap done in a timely manner.  I spent the last few weeks dealing with anemia issues that left me with little time for crafting, and now I just had an unexpected (though voluntary) oral surgery that's going to knock me out for a few more days.  Although I could probably do something interesting things while on the pains medications   ;D.  I foresee some marathon crafting sessions once I'm finally healed up!

First item DONE! I'm pretty darn pleased with it as it's the most sewing I've done for a long, long time - I just hope my stitching holds :-[ Second item feels like it's getting somewhere too - the dull bit is over, so now I can make it PRETTY. Third... looks like it's gonna work but will need some more testing.

Not that I'll be able to send till pretty close to or dead on the sendout date due to lack of cash. Oh well. At least I should have it all finished in time. ::)

I finally got my first item finished! And I did a lot of the grunt work on the second yesterday, getting pieces ready.Still have a ways to go,but it's getting there.
Handy tip-you know how when you unpackage something,it's often held in place by lots of plastic coated wire, and it takes forever to untwist it all to free it? That wire makes the best clamps ever! Twist it tightly around whatever you've glued to hold it in place-it's fabulous for oddly shaped items.I knew there was a reason I put that in the junk drawer instead of tossing it.
The Unique Thrift Store in my area is having a half price off everything sale, today only-so I'm off to shop.Let's see if I have enough will power to get clothes before I blow my budget on craft stuff. ;D

But first, a link to the steampunk photos I took at my party last week http://www.flickr.com/photos/midnightoak/tags/steampunk/

and another link to photos someone else took at my party (because mine are mostly portraits) http://www.flickr.com/photos/choccoweeble/sets/72157603761542125/

I've got small item(s) #1 done. Small item #2 is proving slightly more difficult, but I think I've got the kinks out and will get it done Thurs. night, most likely. And the large item was done, and practical and neat, but now I'm thinking it needs some more embellishment because I'm not sure if it "reads" as steampunk. Although that's based on someone who's admittedly not into steampunk seeing it and saying that it needed tons of buckles. I'm not so sure, but it does need maybe something... Besides, who ever said "practical" and "decorative" were mutually exclusive?

I'm definitely mailing stuff out by Tuesday at the latest, but I'm still muddling over some stuff. I think this is the most swap anxiety/fretting I've ever experienced, but I'm so psyched about it, too! I can't wait for the gallery.

If it's any consolation I keep worrying that my mostly completed large item isn't steampunky enough either  :-\ But I'm fairly sure it's something my partner will like, so am trying to keep the anxiety at bay and not add random things to it (especially cos I don't think Redheadgeek would want that ;D). Eek, hope I'm right  ::)

Otherwise coming along nicely and will hopefully I will remain on track to send on time!

Good call!

And I don't want to just slap gears on everything. I'll probably just add the stuff that would increase functionality *and* steaminess, and leave off the stuff that I would be adding purely so that I felt like it was steampunk "enough." And then quit worrying about it. :)

Gleep, don't worry-if it's broken, just send the other thing you made, and forget about it.Of course,I'm a fine one to tell someone else to relax when I've been stressing a wee bit myself. :D

I am so the craftster tagline "made with love and glue.Lots of glue."No matter how meticulously I plan,I never really know quite how something will look until it's finished. I've had to finagle yours a bit-heck, I broke yours on purpose when I glued it crooked,so I could do it over.Whatever we make,it's going to be fine.
Hey,we do these swaps because they're fun, right? And what could be more fun than a steampunk swap?

Everybody take big, deep, this-shouldn't-be-stressful-it-should-be-fun breaths.  Myself included!

If you are really stressing put a photo up in your craftster photo gallery and pm someone you trust about what they think. :D

To be honest though I don't think you have anything to worry about. We all seem to suffer from swap anxiety. It came up on the Miyazaki swap. I suffer from it chronically. :P But I love everything I get from others so I am trying to look at it positively.

Sent, but I'm a tad confused about who to PM the receipt to. It looks from the gallery thread like my pair is being managed by JoyousBohemian. Do I PM her, Jane Doe or both? Sorry if you already explained this, I must have missed the announcement somewhere in the 22 pages of this thread... :-[

had to share this-a steampunky cd.Jeff Wayne's Musical the War of the Worlds.Narrarated by Richard Burton. It's a 2 disc set.It came out when I was a teen in 1975.One of the songs-Forever Autumn-actually got radio play. The song stuck with me,so I tracked down the cd years later.Cool cover art featuring one of the martian walkers, and a heap of rubble.A mix of narration and music,it's fantastic! I had to get it back out to play it.Plus it's fun introducing my daughter to the story.

I went to the live performance of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds in September. :D Had to go to Melbourne for it. It was great fun because not only did we have the rock band on one side and an orchestra on the other but Jeff Wayne himself was bopping in the middle while conducting. ;D There was also filmed footage to help carry the story and people sining the parts live. They still had Richard Burton's narration - no-one can do Richard Burton. ;D

Harvey,I'm so jealous! Lucky you!
Oh,and silly mistake-the cover isn't a martian and a pile of rubble,it's the ship ThunderChild,in flames.Teach me to post in a hurry.

Right, so I'm getting nervous about my package reaching shazrasha.  Anyone know how long it usually takes packages to cross the Atlantic? It's hovering around two weeks that it's been in transit, now.  I really hope it's just being leisurely in its passage!

No need to worry too much yet, joyousbohemian, I know I have had to wait up to four weeks and longer for parcels from abroad before.  :)

post is really weird, I have had stuff delivered in 4 days and to the same country again in four weeks  ???

I think my parcel has been about the same timed away. I hope it gets there so will cross my fingers for both of us  ;D

Been about two weeks for mine too. Well, it would have left the post office two weeks ago today. I don't know about the USA but over here (UK) weekends pretty much don't count as basically the postal service shuts down after twelve on a Saturday. Although they do deliver post on a Saturday, if you're expecting a parcel you can almost guarantee it won't arrive on the weekend. *shrugs* My last swap package took about twelve days to arrive at its destination, though the one I got in return took a month - my poor partner was tearing her hair out.

I tried to take in progress pictures but they failed. Will be making more this weekend and will get photos then.
But here is a brief summary:

Start with two lots of your chosen cookie dough. one flavoured with cocoa and one vanilla (or whatever, go wild!). I used Swedish shortbread.
Roll out a thin sausage of the vanilla, then a rectangular strip of cocoa to wrap round it.
Next roll out several thin sausages of vanilla and cocoa and place them next to eachother to create a stripey rectangular sheet. Make sure the first and last ones are one vanilla and one cocoa. I think I will have to use more of these next time as I only got 6 spokes. wrap this around the centre. Finally roll or flatten out vanilla to wrap the whole thing. Use any leftovers to make odd shaped biscuits.

Let it sit in the fridge for a bit to harden then slice off biscuits. I ended up having to gently prod them back into being round. It helps to put it on a baking sheet when you want to wrap the layers too.

Happy baking!  ;D
