Title: Help! Creative ideas for re-gifting an ugly doll *My Brothers Response on pg 9*
Post by: Cortney! on November 20, 2007 07:35:48 PM
About 10 years ago around Christmas time my brother and I found the ugliest doll we had ever seen at a toy store at the mall. We laughed about it and continued our shopping. A few days later I was surprised when I received that same ugly doll as a gag gift from my brother. Since then we've been passing it back and forth every year in new and creative ways. I've sent it to him from a different address, and made a shirt for him (which I found in the trash earlier this year >:( )

I even made a photo album of the doll with all the animals I used to work with at the zoo school I attended.
Last year he really blew me away, though. He bought me the whole family! I now own 16 of the ugliest dolls I have ever seen and have no idea how to re-gift them this year.
I'd really appreciate any ideas you might have. I have a sewing machine and a 1-inch button press at my disposal. I also have the t-shirt I made him a few years back (yes, I rescued it from the trash).

-Update-
Sorry to keep everyone waiting for so long. My friend Victoria and I decided the multi-headed monster would be fun to make, so we got to work on it a few weeks ago. After a full day of crafting we were nowhere near being done with the beast, so Victoria kindly took on the rest of the project (she is much better at sewing than I am). We just met up yesterday and I got to see the final results:

This six-headed beast is about 2 1/2 feet long and made from fleece and felt. The dolls' bodies are still attached to the heads - they were just shoved into the body. And If you look closely at the legs you may find one thats a little phallic.
My fiance and I are currently working on painting a wooden box to put it in. It's going to be in the style of an early freak show carnival poster. I'll post pictures of that as soon as we're done.
As for the other dolls, you guys gave me so many great ideas that I wanted to save some dolls for his birthday in April.

Wow, that is indeed an atrocious doll.  Hmmmm... You could make them into trolls, maybe... or Mandrakes, if you're into Harry Potter, they're described as being really ugly babies.  Just some ideas  :)

you could make them little elf costumes and hide them all over the house on Christmas Morning. Attack of the ugly elves! lol

Melt them all together naked and give them back to him. LOL, then he'll really know what ugly is. :)

Wow, that's um, ugly.    :D

(Love the pics of the ugly doll with the animals!)

But SIXTEEN of them?  Holy hell!  I think your only option is to become a horror film director.

OMG!! My best friend in high school had that doll! We called him the ugly baby and he went with us on a road trip! How crazy! I think I even have a pic somewhere...

As for the regift...I like the idea of hiding them all over. Put them in places he would randomly come across them...like in the shower, in his car (if he has one) in the fridge when he goes to get his milk for cereal, etc. so he just keeps finding them all day. Then end with one in his bed at night. That would kind of creep me out...especially if you have the time to dress them all alike, so it would be like the same ugly doll was following him around or something...

Yes - that is one (oops no, 16) UGLY doll.  It looks like the monkey (?) also thinks so (I am soooo not with her!)

I am really posting to say I am amazed at the creativity of this group.  I love the elf/hiding idea.  I also really love the troll dolls idea since that is kindof what they look like, but the standup hair would be difficult since it is all so short.

Definitely something ghoulish...

AAAAAAGGGHH!!!  Its RAYMOND!!!

A few years ago my sister got the same doll for Christmas, except instead of a smiling face, it had a pouting face, making the doll THAT much more hideous.  The weird thing was that because it was pouting, you felt bad for it, and couldn't help but kinda like it.

We named it "Poor Raymond"  and whenever anyone would say something about how ugly it was we'd pick it up and cradle it and say "Poor Raymond, look, you made him sad!"  :D

Have you considered maybe doing a repaint on one of them and maybe making a new outfit for it?  You could turn it into a Tranny, or a Gangsta rapper or I dunno, lots of things...

Unless you do something really drastic this could escalate to the level of Tyree Guyton and the Heidelberg project...

Please let us know! what you decide! :D

Find 16 pictures of your brother and dress up each baby doll to look like him. Then attach the photo to each so he gets the reference. He'll have a pile of little mini-mes.

i like the idea of hiding them all over the place but you could make them extra creepy... give them all a little weapon (hangman's noose, knife, lead pipe... think Clue), perhaps have one of them carrying the head of another. of course, if someone did this to me i'd probably have to move out... i'd never feel safe in that home again.
i also like the idea of melting them all together (shit, that would be terrifying) but it might effectively put an end to the regifting tradition.
there is something really wrong with those dolls... i couldn't have one, let alone 16, in the house with me!

Wow...that is creepy!  My SIL has started something similar with a creepy doll from the 50s.  She hasn't 'gifted' it yet, just randomly hid it when she visits family out of state.  We're planning on wrapping him up for a x-mas present.

Back to your dilema, my husband suggests putting one into a jello mold.  I LOVE the hiding them around the house idea and the jello would go along with that.  Creepy dessert lol

Forget the doll...what the hell is that first animal? Is it a monkey?? I like animals alright, but that thing is unfortunate.

This whole situation sounds like my family. Fantastic! I like the pillow idea.

Yeah, trinashere, I like this idea --- very creepy but kind of in keeping with what has been done.  One could have a mini version of that tee on....

or

you could send him a boxed set of heads for one year, and feet/hands another year?

Put sticks up their butts and present them as a bouquet in a vase?
Attach them to a wreath frame so they can be part of an "ugly doll" wreath?
Wire them to a stick so they become a tree/totem pole thingy?

my old roomie and i had a game where we hid a giant cardboard cutout of the hamster from Dr. Dolittle all around the house. Because it was so big, we had to be super creative. I loved to hear him scream in the middle of the night when he'd come home from work and find it in his closet.

So hiding things around the house is always a superb way to go. But with 16, it'll be the gift that keeps on giving!

It would be awesome, if you had 25 of them, so each day in December till Christmas, he would get one as a gift, lol, because you got to find a way to double him or something, since he went from 1 to 16, lol.

LMAO about K-Fed.

Whatever you do (I love the idea of an ugly baby wreath -- depends one how big they are, I guess.  I made a Barbie wreath and it rocked!) make sure you save the original doll so you can continue to regift for years to come!

I also love the idea of hiding them all around the house to scare the paduky out of him.

someone had the idea of a horror film, that would be great!  one year for xmas i bought a bunch of stuffed animals from a dollar store and i ripped them apart and sewed them together with different limbs to make little zombie type things.  but these all look pretty much the same.  OH!  "rasterize" giant photos and hang them all over his room. this website takes a photo and turns it giant, check it out:

How quiet are you?  I think he shoud wake in the morning with them all in or on his bed <~shudder~>

Lawn decorations.  Perhaps accompanied by the most horrifying song of all times - "It's a Small World After All." (I was once trapped in the ride at Disneyland for over an hour.  I now fear nothing.)  Oooh - even better if you can figure a way to make them move!

If you choose to hide them all over, leave one out, so he has to keep anticipating finding that last one..... mwah hah hah hah hah.....

That doll is so creepy.
Um, maybe you should set a trap in his room and put all the dolls on his bed looking at the door, and do some sort of contraption to make a record player play the infamous Psycho song.  ;D
Edit: Oh! I wanted to ask, what is the brand/name of the doll? I wanted to look it up.

I think you should make a floor lamp. Buy a regular floor lamp, drop a 4 inch PVC pipe down the outside, fill with spray insulation to stabilize, then make a garland of dolls and run them up it. If they're regular sized dolls anyway - I can't tell. If you need to incorporate the shirt, recon it into the lampshade.

I definatly like the idea of hiding them all over, and yes, you must leave one out. he will always be wondering where it is, when it will pop out at him! We did that as a senior prank in high school, someone let chickens loose, and when we were questioned everyone said there were six let loose. But there were really only five...bahaha they spent hours looking for it until they realized it wasn't there. The doll isn't alive though, he doesn't have to find it right away  ;D

My goodness! I had no idea I'd get such a big response! Some of these ideas are priceless. I think I have enough ammunition to keep this regifting going for 20 years. So far, I'm really digging the giant body with 16 heads idea. The idea of making the dolls little shirts with my brothers face on them cracked me up! I also loved the idea of underwear with doll iron-ons.
An ugly doll featurette will definitely have to happen some time in the future.
Someone asked the brand of these dolls - they're called Palm Pals Bean Bag Kids. The dolls are made really cheaply with plastic head, arms and legs and a bean bag body. The torso is just bean bag and the appendages are zip-tyed to some fabric. I don't want to pull off any heads or melt anything just yet - I think theres still many years to come of passing these guys back and forth before I start mutilating them.
As for the monkey in the picture, her name is Ozz and she's a Geoffrey's tamarin. I think she's adorable, though she definitely has a mean streak. When she disliked someone (and she disliked many people) she'd make the most human angry face I'd ever seen.

Thank you all so much for the ideas. I'll keep you posted on what I'm planning to do.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I like the horror movie one.  Go stop motion.  Put it into his dvd player so that it plays when he turns it on, and then go with the dress-them-alike-and-follow-him-around idea.

Whatever you do, please let us know. :) (Thanksgiving smiley!!!)

i really like the idea of leaving one out, maybe if you dressed them all like xmas elves with little numbers on them, and leave out say #11....
but put the rest chonologically where he might find them....like #1 by his bedside table, #2 on his dresser, #3 in the bathroom, #4 in the kitchen, #6 by the computer.....or whatever oder he goes about his day.......
not only would i be totally freaked out if this happened to me....but it would bug me all day "WHAT DID I FORGET!?!?!" thinking that they went in the right order......

ha!  my dad and i pass back and forth this iridescent tissue ox cover in the shape of a cat we have pricelessly named Miss Kitty.  She's traveled across state lines in their rv, unbeknownst to him.  heh.  currently, i have her and will probably pass her along around christmas time.  :D  she's been in the freezer, in the rv, in the window sill, under bed covers, in a car, and on the ceiling fan.  she really gets around!  anyway, i say maybe hide them strategically but make it kinda scavenger huntish.  each doll has a clue to the next doll's whereabouts?  ha!  have fun!

and ozz is one sexy tamarin!!  rawr.

I didn't read this whole forum, so excuse me if somebody has come up with this already, but I have two ideas:

1. You can attach all the dolls onto one big garland for the Christmas tree. Of course each doll is dressed as a (horrible kitschy) Christmas character like Santa, angels, rudolfs, nightmare before Christmas, etc.

2. Buy a really big doll and chop of the head. Somehow attach all 16 (or as many as you can) heads onto the big doll body to make a 16-headed monster.

Good luck with your project....

I know this will put an end to the gift-giving, but when you guys are near the end of your passing back and forth, you could chop off the heads and make Christmas ornaments for yourself and your brother. There are 16, so you could do 8 for each of you, to remind you of Christmasses past.

Good luck with the gifting idea. I like the K-Fed and hiding numbered babies ideas best.

You should give them glow in the dark eyes, then creep up on him in the middle of the night and place them all around his room.. in the corners, next to him in bed, in his closet.. and then play a recording of a baby crying, or something, to wake him up. You could make them look all freaky looking like Chucky!  :P Maybe I'm the only one that's creeped out by him..

One in the backseat of the car, with the rearview adjusted on him. That'd make me jump..  :P

I scared my friend with a doll once at night.. it was priceless  ;D

this is way different than anyones it's acctually preatty freaky. You should make them all horror dolls and mess up their hair make them(sort of like the elf idea but....) make them dark dull colors instead of green white and red Ect. Make them black grey dark red Etc. and them hide them everywhere but in like places that would sort of freak him out

Just thought u might like the idea

That is the most disturbing, yet awesome, thing I have ever seen.

this is hilarious, and they are truly atrocious!

but you can't destroy them!!  Then he'll be off the hook and wont have to figure something out NEXT year !   ;D

What if you use thread and yarn and make them into a big christmas wreath?  then he can disassemble it for the following year.

You could make a big cardboard bus... with the world's scariest passengers, then put on there "Destination: Creepyville"  lol

you could make them little elf costumes and hide them all over the house on Christmas Morning. Attack of the ugly elves! lol

Heck, yes!

LOL. I think every family has something like this that they pass around to people. In our family it is the "graduation goat"- a hideous 2 foot tall goat statue covered in some kind of llama/sheep hair with driftwood horns. My family gifted it to people as they graduated from highschool/college/tech school.
Anyway, for the doll dilemma...
The calendar idea really cracked me up. You could get one made really easily on snapfish if you take some digital photos.
Another idea I had was to go to a local bakery and have them make those edible image transfers of each of the dolls (or maybe they make a kit??) and put them as faces on gingerbread men. At the very least you could use regular photos and attach closeups of the faces with royal icing to cookies. **As an added bonus you could talk some people he doesn't know into dropping a cookie tray off to him with the doll cookies in it.
Have you tried talking his co-workers, friends, etc. into all taking a doll and wrapping it up to gift to him? It would give him severe paranoia about receiving gifts from anybody- he'd have to worry about if it was a real gift or a doll.
If he does work, and his workplace does secret Santa exchanges, you could leave a big box with one of his coworkers/his boss with all the dolls in it. Then on one of the days of the exchange he will get the box with a tag that says "To: (Brother)  From: Secret Santa."- Funny story with this one... this actually happened to me. My uncle, mom and I all work in the same office and during a secret Santa exchange I was elated to show up and find 2 gifts sitting on my desk, until I opened one and it was a lump of real coal!! I was so disappointed because many of the gifts were really sweet until that one. I finally tracked it back to him, got a good laugh outta it, and passed it along to the next sucker.
Good luck in all your future dolly gifts!! Maybe if you have a camera you can tape his reaction and gift him the tape for his Bday.

I think you should dress them up like tiny Santa Clauses, leave them in different places around the house, like on the stairs, in the washing machine, in the fridge, each with a post it note with the same message
"Merry Christmas"

That is so awesome! It's great that you updated it with the end result--definitely worth coming back for!

PS if you have a cat, you should keep it away. my cat would totally eat that thing and it would end up the way of my poor jackalope magnet. bye!

The 6-headed mutant was a huge hit this year! My fiance and I painted a box in the style of a early 1900s freak show poster to contain the beast.  Then I attached a hasp and padlocked the box.

I also wrapped the original ugly doll in a separate box with a note that said "A monster awaits. Finding the key will be a piece of cake ... or should I say pie."
On Christmas morning I inserted the padlock key into a piece of pumpkin pie and sealed the hole. Then I put the pie in my brothers fridge.
He first unwrapped the original doll with the note, then realizing where it was going, he unwrapped the mutant box.

After unwrapping the box, he ran to the kitchen to find the pie (too bad it wasn't key lime  :P) and prodded it with a fork until he found the key.

The unveiling of the beast

You can see he's laughing - he's way too old to think these dolls are scary.
The best part is that I don't think he realized all the dolls weren't there, so he'll be really surprised to get some more for his birthday. I'll make sure to post that project, too.
Thank you to everyone for all the great ideas! merry Christmas!

Hahaha!  Awesome!  What a fun pair of siblings you guys are!  Thanks for sharing the unveiling and the story of it with us.  Until the last photo, I had thought that the dolls (and therefore the monster) were MUCH bigger and I wondered how he was going to find room for such a huge thing.  Please post your future re-gifts and also what he does for you.

Happy New Year!
