Title: (A year late) My Formal Dress
Post by: fluro_blue on November 12, 2007 02:55:38 PM
I decided last year that I wanted to make my own formal dress, because I couldn't find any that I liked or any that would fit me properly. My sewing teacher was really kind and let me and a friend spend Monday's after school working on it for a few hours. Two hours a week is not much time to work on a formal dress and it took about a years worth of those lessons. I stuffed up a lot :P

We spent about a term working on the...*can't remember the word* it starts with a t...I don't know. A practice version of the dress? Made from calico? I'm sure you know the word lol. Anyway, I had to do about three different versions of that to get the measurements right and we ended up having to split a few of the pattern pieces in different spots to get the bust to fit properly. I hate hate hate measurements lol.

Anyway, here tis...

^On the dummy. I would've been happy to just cart that around at formal, I thought it made the back look the best ever.

^Where there should have been buttonholes. The machine died on me halfway through the fourth buttonhole so I gave up and unpicked them very, very carefully then sewed the ribbon over the top in a laced way. I thought it looked better :P

^Me, looking slightly pregnant lol. Not pregnant, damn shadows!

^The back on me...oh how I love it :D

^The front-ish. Me looking unpregnant and the bust fitting perfectly! It should've after spending so long working on it lol.

It was made out of really heavy delustered satin. It looked and felt so nice and was totally worth the ridiculous amount of money it was per metre :P Still I suppose it was cheaper than buying a dress. I learned so much from making it as well. Loved it.

Wonderful work.
I am sure all the practice runs with calico were worth it.
Lovely work.

AMAZING dress =O You looked simply gorgeous... a year ago XD But I'm sure you still look wonderful ^^
And geez, anyone would look amazing in that =O
Super-awesome job! ^^

I had that dress! But mine was black and bright pink.
looks alot lovelier on you.

Well done, it was a difficult dress to make, took me forever, only just got it done in time.
Do you know what pattern it was from?
I'm oh-so-tempted to try and pull of something large for semi-formal (a month from now). This is probably pushing it! XD But I'd so love some inspiration <3

Thank you all very much :) I've been trying to find the pattern number online but I think it's discontinued. It was a Jessica McClintock pattern, if that helps lol. When I get home I'll check the packet.

I've seen so many of these dresses on here and they all look so beautiful. I think it's just a great pattern that suits everybody.

I really wasn't expecting all these great comments. Aw! Thanks :D

A mock up is probably the best word to use to describe the dress when I think of it. I just wish I could remember the word my teacher used lol. It'll come to me one day.

the word you want is toile!  (thats the professional term for a 'mock up' usually made from calico)

"Toile," or muslin. Either/or is fine.
And, adding to the chorus of others, the dress is gorgeous in general, but particularly beautiful on you. You did a wonderful job with this.  ;)

Absolutely lovely!  You did a terrific job on it, and congrats for seeing it through to the finish, which must have been hard since you had only a couple hours a week available to work on it.  And kudos to your teacher for giving you the extra time and attention - if you haven't already done so, get a nice pic of you in the dress and send it to her with a thank you note, i think it would mean a lot to her.  I give you an A++ in sewing!

HEY ! That looks just like the dress I / my neighbor made (before I knew how to sew well) for my boyfriend's prom two years ago! I love the colors you chose - it really looks nice! Here is my dress. We definitely stood out at that dance !
You can't see the red stripe separating the two checkerboard ones, but it's there. :)

That dress looks awesome! I love the checkerboard pattern on it, it makes it stand out so much.

Before I finished school last year I actually went back in for a day and got all dressed up and had the photography teacher take some photos of me with my the teacher. I think she really liked it and I also got her some flowers. I was so grateful, I've never had a teacher as nice as her. It blew my mind she helped me so much after school.

And thank you so much everybody :) *is all embarrased* You guys are so nice.

Beautiful job!! I teach sewing to students after school ages 11-14.  What patience.  I made this dress for a fromal for one of my daughter's friends. We did the buttonholes with the ribbon lacing and it was beautiful. Here's my question. If you just sewed the ribbons down, how did you get in and out of the dress? We had a zipper under the lacings, and I assume you did, but I can't figure out, if you actually tacked the ribbons down, how'd you open the zip?  Just curious. Your teacher, friend and you should be proud!!

Beautiful! and I don't know if anyone said anything but I believe the mock up is called Twaling (or something like that). I call it a muslin.

Wow, very nice! I actually like that you didn't make holes for the ribbon lace up, it looks a lot neater your way.
I love the straight lines and the width of the skirt. Did you wear a tulle underskirt, or does the dress just fall that way?
It fits you like a glove!

So beautiful and elegant, especially for a younger gal (that's a good thing). So many gowns for girls are just poofy and obnoxious. That dress makes you look like a star.

I adore the back.

I have a question: does the ribbon can be tightened or loosened in the corset look on the back to fit the body if somehow you gain or lose weight?
The pattern actually calls for button holes on the back, so you can tighten and loosen them slightly but they don't really do much except look pretty. Mine were sewed down so I couldn't adjust them at all.

If you just sewed the ribbons down, how did you get in and out of the dress? We had a zipper under the lacings, and I assume you did, but I can't figure out, if you actually tacked the ribbons down, how'd you open the zip?

The zip was actually on the right hand side of the dress :P Which was great because I don't know what I would have done with the lacing and everything otherwise lol.

Wow, very nice! I actually like that you didn't make holes for the ribbon lace up, it looks a lot neater your way.
I love the straight lines and the width of the skirt. Did you wear a tulle underskirt, or does the dress just fall that way?
It fits you like a glove!
I did have a layer of tulle underneath. I tried to get it as close to the blue on the back as possible. I thought it looked great when I stepped or pulled the skirt up slightly and you could see this flash of blue ;)

Thanks :D

I'm sure someone's posted it already, but I'm too sleepy to run through 9 pages of replies!  The mockup can be called a toile, a mockup, or a muslin...depending on where you're from and who you learned from. :)

You did a great job on that dress, too. It looks professional, and it fits you SO well!! Congrats :)

I love this so much just because you incorporated my two fav colours but the dress so well made! And the bust looks like it fits perfectly! I had a problem last year with my DDDs (what I believed to be DDs), the skeleton in my prom dress broke down and I was sagging BEFORE I EVEN LEFT THE HOUSE. Lucky for me I got a breast reduction so I'll never problems like that again.

Good job!

That looks gorgeous - I love the combination of the blue and black and the lacing is a lovely detail.  And the fit looks terrific.  Great work.
