Title: Another Slouchy Beret - this time a cow pie? EDITED: NOW WITH PROMISED PATTERN
Post by: littlemissmuffet on October 28, 2007 07:19:26 AM
Yet another slouchy hat! It seems as the weather gets cold they're all I want to make.

This was made with some really cheap acrylic yarn I found randomly at a Market here. It was 1 quid, and I made 2 hats from it! I actually really like the way the stitch definition shows up, even if it is crappy
yarn.

It's seed stitch and a simple cable twist, all the way up to the top. I'll try to post a tute on my blog in a day or two.

After I made this hat, I found an article in the paper called "30 reason to hate the French" in which they compared Berets to cow pats. It cracked me up and actually made me love the hat even more! It may be a cowpat, but it's the most stylish one i've ever seen!

As always there are more details on my blog, at http://skeinsandsteins.blogspot.com/2007/10/cow-pats-and-slouchy-hats.html (http://skeinsandsteins.blogspot.com/2007/10/cow-pats-and-slouchy-hats.html)

edit: Here is the pattern as promised! It is posted here as well as on my blog (http://skeinsandsteins.blogspot.com/)

PATTERN FOR THE SLOUCHY CABLED BERET OF YOUR DREAMS: OR THE MOST FASHIONABLE COW PIE

Materials:

1 ball any DK weight yarn (I used some random acrylic I picked up in a market.)
1 pair size 5 double pointed needles (Or size needed to obtain gauge)
1 pair size 5 circular needles (Or size needed to obtain gauge)
1 pair size 4 double pointed needles (Or size needed to obtain gauge)
1 tapestry needle

Gauge = 5 stitches/inch in stockinette
Abbreviations:

C4F: Slip two stitches to cable needle, hold in front of work. K2, K2 from cable needle.

CO 80 stitches and join, being careful not to twist work. Work in 1x1 ribbing (k1, p1) until piece measures 1.5"

On next round *k1, k1fb* until 130 stitches are on the needles.

Establish pattern as follows: *p2, k4, p2, work 7 stitches in seed stitch*.
Knit three rows in established pattern. On 4th row *p2, c4f, p2, work 7 stitches in seed stitch*. Continue crossing the cables every 4 rows.

Once the hat measures apr. 6" from cast on edge (more or less depending on how slouchy you want your hat to be) begin decreasing as follows:
*p2, k5, p2, k2, work 2 stitches in seed stitch, k2tog, work three stitches in seed stitch*

Work one round even

On next round and subsequent rounds, decrease 1 before and after marker, EOR

When there is only one remaining purl stitch between each of the cables, decrease as follows: *ssk, k1, k2tog, p1*
Next row: *sl 1, k2tog, psso, p1*, 16 stitches remain. Cut yarn, leaving apr. 3 feet. Using tapestry needle, weave yarn through live stitches and pull to close. Weave in ends and block lightly. Wear with pizazz and glee.

Looking at this hat, I remember why I was going to harass my mother to get me knitting lessons.
It's very pretty.  :3

Yah, I decreased in the seed stitch until there was no more seed stitch left to decrease. Then I did a few quick decrease rounds with the stockinette of the cables and called it good.

I love the simplicity of this hat. The design is so pretty but not over busy. :) I would love the pattern as well so add my name to the list!
Is this a hard project for working in the round? (haven't done one yet)
I was planning on making a tank top for my first In the round project but A hat might be better as I assume it would be faster. :)

Thanks for the compliments! I don't think it's that hard to work in the round - just as much as anything else. The first few rows working in the round are always a bit tricky, but since it's just ribbing on this one, by the time you start the cables you'd be set to go.

Oh yay! Let me know if you have any problems with my instructions - I'm not very used to writing up patterns, and my "make it up as you go along" method can sometimes be problematic.

I was so pleasantly surprised by how the yarn looks! I guess sometimes acrylic isn't evil, and i got really lucky.

Love the hat!  I'm knitting myself one, and everything's great.  Just FYI though, there's a typo in the pattern.  It says to increase to 130, when you really want to increase to 120.

It's knitting up so quickly!  I can't wait to finish it.  Thanks so much for the pattern.   ;D

Why thank you! And I tend to lean away from cowpies too. Seeing berets compared to them in the paper made me giggle for days!

I made this hat with a heavier weight yarn and size 7 needles and made it too slouchy according to my dd who was the recipient Christmas morning - I personally like it, but ripped back (5" instead of 8" before the decrease) I initially made mine on dpns so I split the pattern on to 4 needles (4 very crowded needles) where the 2 purl stitches start before the cables.  My first attempt at decreasing (the now too slouchy version) I just made up my own decreases but being that this is the second go-around, I figured I'd try to stay true to the pattern. I'm wondering, where did you place the markers?

I made 2!  The first was too slouchy for dd#1 (Cascade 128 and US#7 dpns), so I kept it, and made her another with lighter yarn, smaller needles and less rounds, Lion Brand Woolease and US#5 addi 16" circs and dpns.

hey, sorry, I just saw this question! My bad.

I've rewritten the pattern to make the decreases clearer. It's up on my blog at skeinsandsteins.blogspot.com (http://skeinsandsteins.blogspot.com), and also on Ravelry (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/slouchy-springtime-beret (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/slouchy-springtime-beret))

I can send you the new pattern if you'd like. Email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Again, i'm so sorry I just saw this!

Even if it is cheap acrylic, it still loks great. I almost always make my hates with acrylic just because I like to throw them in the wash and go. Thanks mucho for the pattern!
