Hand Embroidered Patch Swap

Craftster member who is organizing this swap: rectangel
Sign-up date range: 10-23 until 11-02 -this is a very limited space swap-maximum 15 people
Date to send item by: November 27, 2007

Limited to a certain number of people?: YES
Should be willing to ship outside your country.

Must have successfully have completed one swap.

Restricted to people who all live in the same country? NO
All ages allowed? Or 18+? all ages

Swap Organizer himself/herself meets these conditions:
- Has fully read the Swap Info Guide: YES
- Has successfully completed two swaps as a participant: YES
- Is not organizing more than three swaps right now: YES
- Will recruit a co-organizer or give all details to a Swap Moderator if this swap has more than 25 participants: YES

Swap Organizer will check each participant to make sure they meet these conditions:
- Has been a member for at least one month: YES
- Has posted at least 15 times: YES
- Has completed one swap successfully before signing up for multiple swaps at a time: YES
- Is not currently signed up for more than five swaps: YES
- Does not have any negative feedback: YES

Details of swap: This designed to be a quick swap that will net you hand embroidered patches from 3-5 different people.

You will receive a PM with the questionnaires for the people you are making patches for, feel free to communicate with them.  When you finish a patch we hope you will post an image of it.  However, you don’t have to reveal who it is for so it will still be a surprise for the recipient.  Once your partner receives they are welcome to identify the design they received.  When you receive you must PM the organizer AND the sender.  Each person who you are making a patch for will be making one for you too.

You are required to post in the gallery or the original thread at least once a week after the start of the swap to keep us apprised of your progress.  If you do not post weekly or apprise your organizer of your progress I will advise your partners to hold off sending.  If you state in your questionnaire that you wish to be part of a big group you may have 4 or 5 partners if you state in your questionnaire you wish to be part of a small group you may have 3 or 4 partners.

It is always nice to pick a design with your partner in mind :)  The unfinished (open back) patch specifications are as follows minimum size is 3” by 3” maximum is 10” by 10”.  They can be on felt, quilting cotton, denim or twill.  If you are using fabric that frays you should include a minimum ¼” seam allowance all around the patch or square (ie the 10” max square would then be 10 1/2”).  Additionally, if you are using fabric with a grain it is strongly recommended you align your design with the grain of the fabric.  Remember your partner can always trim your patch but your design could be rendered useless if it is too close to the edge of the patch.

Since the patches are light and small they should all fit nicely into an envelope that can be mailed relatively inexpensively.  Each design should be signed or tagged with your screen name.  Consider carefully if you have the time to complete the patches before signing up.  If you send patches to all your partners on time you will receive positive feedback once they arrive.  Tracking does not have to be used but if your item does not arrive you will need to resend in order to receive positive feedback.  Postal receipts should be kept and photographs are also recommended.

Additionally, it is a good idea to put the patches in a plastic bag before putting them in the envelope to ship in order to protect the fabric from the ravages of shipping.

If you want to participate, send the following information to the organizer -

rectangel, if you need a co-organizer so that you can open it up to more than 15 people, I'd be happy to oblige.

You're in flynn ;) I'll be updating the profiles later today.  Thanks GatsbyGirl...we'll see how it goes.

I am really skeptical about openning it up past 25 because even with 15 it means documenting a minimum of 45 shipments!  I feel moderately prepared but I think I will be enlisting some help regardless so I will put you on the list :)

I'm thinking.....
I really want to do this, I'm certain I can manage 3 or 4 small patches in the time allotted but I'm still worried about whether my efforts will be considered sub par  :-\ so for now I'm just thinking about it

I really really doubt that anyone would be unhappy and there will likely be other beginners.

I've tried to explain this before but it is part of why I love the sublime stitching board so much...I have most of those designs but everytime someone does one I am excited to see it because it's a color combination, a stitch, a detail there is always something that I see that is an idea that never crossed my mind :)

I agree with rectangel I love to see what everyone does and what colors they choose and the stitches.  I am always I never thought of that.  I say do it.  How could anyone be disappointed with hand embroidery.

Title: Re: Hand Embroidered Patch Swap [sign-ups Oct-23 til 4 PM MT Nov-2]
Post by: GatsbyGirl on October 24, 2007 06:15:02 PM
Question: Is it ok if we don't tag the patches with our user name as long as we send a card? I'm just thinking that the recipients might want to use them on a gift for someone else and while our label means something to them, it might not to the next person.

Title: Re: Hand Embroidered Patch Swap [sign-ups Oct-23 til 4 PM MT Nov-2]
Post by: rectangel on October 24, 2007 09:10:38 PM
this is my take on it but everyone else is free to put their two cents in and generally all the people I've met on craftster tend to be co-operative so I'm sure it will all work out.

what I meant by tag is sign your work preferable tastefully and with stitches...like signed artwork...so years from now when I'm famous you be able to prove you have an original early stitch project by me :D..no just kidding but I do hope you all get famous and leave me with priceless patches ;) from your early days...if not at least  if I'm making something for someone else they know I didn't do it :)

everybody else feel free to offer your opinions...

Are there any photos here at Craftster (or elsewhere) that show what these patches are supposed to be like? Not exactly like, obviously, but I work best when I can see something :)

Why yes I do! :D  The first picture in this one has a great example of a felt patch...
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=186534.0
Although I usually like to leave a little more felt around the design so there's plenty of room to stitch it to something else.
Here's another good example (3rd picture down)...
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=202543.0
And this is a good example of fabric patches...
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=173459.0
She just took them all and sewed them together like patchwork.
I'm pretty partial to this one...  ;D

TAOJ - I have never had a problem bringing my embroidery on the plane I just don't bring scissors.  I bring nail clippers instead although 2 weeks ago when I was flying I had a seam ripper and nobody cared about that either.  Give it a shot - losing a needle is nothing compared to the 1-2 hours of stitching you get in before you even get on the plane!

I never get stopped with scissors (domestic or international), blunt tip small ones.

Maybe I'll try it and true that a needle isn't much of a loss. I'm travelling for about 12 hours so lots of stitching time! I love to read, but sometimes I just want something else to do.

Just a quick note ... if you have international partners especially intercontinental ones I recommend you work on those patches first and send them first...due to the time lag with shipping.  I really don't want anyone shipping late with this swap as it will put you into the December rush and that will be messy.

Well when I've had packages from South Aus in the past it has only taken 7 days so maybe you ought to send to the US first? or maybe I was just really lucky those times  ;D

Title: Re: Hand Embroidered Patch Swap [CLOSED Final Send-outs November 27]
Post by: rectangel on October 31, 2007 07:36:09 AM
as a general rule these are light enough that they will go "letter-post" which much faster than "parcel-post" so hopefully there won't be too many problems...time-wise.

if you have all international partners then you can surprise us with who you start with :)  most of the people in the US have only one or two international partners so that is why I made the recommendation...US to Canada and Canada to the US is slow but predictable -off continent I've found can be rather random.

Okay so now I have a question for all of you  ;D

Wool felt - where do you buy it?  And is it better than acrylic felt that comes in squares at Michael's?  I need the dirt on felt ... I 've used the regular craft squares but do you think the wool is better?

And a note to my partners acryllic (if you are using felt) is fine by me...I'm actually allergic to wool  :o

...hmm after reading about the "real whip cream" above now I'm on a mission to find real wool felt and dessert in the immediate future!

Title: Re: Hand Embroidered Patch Swap [CLOSED Final Send-outs November 27]
Post by: Ezri_B on October 31, 2007 09:32:16 AM
acrylic vs. wool is like cool whip vs. real whipped cream.

They both have their place, but one is SO much better.

Acrylic is thin and it is cheap, and come in tons of colors. It also is very easy to find. I tend to pull small stitches through it quite easily. Also after lots of use it goes a bit bald/bare.

Wool is like sewing in butter (ok, it worked for me, but sounds sort of weird). It is thicker but I think easier to stitch through. It holds stitches so much better. You rarely see bare spots through even after lots of use.

I would pick wool in a heart beat over acrylic, but when I'm working with my kids it's acrylic all the way, (unless it is a major gift.) Because if they screw it up it's about a quarter to replace a whole square.

Once in a while I'll find wool felt at the nicer fabric stores, otherwise online they have it.

This is my opinion, others may have a totally different view.

My local sewing store carries wool felt, and I believe Joanns does as well. Now that I think about it do iron on patterns or pencils transfer well to wool felt? Or should I use the tissue paper metod?

Wool felt is available on the bolt at most fabric stores.

I find that transfer pens work well on it, not so much transfer pencils. Best of all is making a photocopy of your pattern (don't use a laser printer) and just ironing that on. It works like a dream on felt.

I have four of my five designs picked out. Hope to get started on the stitching this weekend.

Hmmm, I'll have to go to Joanns and look again. I looked a few months ago, and they only had acrylic felt, including the bolt stuff. Maybe that's just my Joanns too, I don't have the greatest selection of anything.

I like wool better.  My Joanns has it by the bolt over with all the fleece.  Since we are talking material.  Is there a better cotton to buy for patches than other cotton.  I am going this weekend to the fabric store.

Generally speaking quilt stores have the nicest cotton (good weights, on-grain) but as long as you avoid poly-cotton blends you should be fine.

The nicest fabric I have stitched on lately is Kitty98626's tea towel which she made herself...loosely woven cotton is definitely tougher to work with.  Twill is also lovely but is a heavier weight so it can be more taxing to stitch through.

Thanks
Kitty98626's towel was nice to work with. I will have to ask her what it is.

OK, maybe some of you more experienced stitchers can help me with this, what is the best way to get a pattern onto black or dark fabric?

I've been wondering the same thing, I know you can buy white carbon paper....but not around here apparently  :-\

easiest to find is silver dressmakers pencil (with reasonable staying power)... then there are chalk type things but these types of things will only work for fabric that isn't stretchy and is abrasion resistant because you have to push on them to draw

the best method in my opinion is to iron on some dissolvable or tear away stablizer to the back and put your transfer on the stablizer...if you have carbon paper you can put the design on ahead of time too...positioning is tricky but this is the best way to get all the details...

finally for small things (writing and filling in missing spots) we come to the white pen ... the one I have works well and stays on better than white carbon paper (which is a lot like chalk that looks great to start with and them brushes away) BUT it is invisible when it first goes on and you have to wait for it to dry to show up I sometimes use it with my silver pencil and together I get a not bad outcome but it takes a lot of patience...there are different white pens I got mine at Michaels...some are goopy some don't easily wash away.  Pens are better on stretchy stuff because they "paint" the ink on versus rub like a pencil...I don't recommend using the pen and the white carbon paper together as the white carbon gets into the pen.

Felt is evil as it soaks up every thing and is not a solid surface (writing on dust bunnies) but I'm sure there are some experts out there who have a surefire method ;)

I forgot to mention that you can usually get all kinds of stablizer at quilt stores (machine embroidery) and of course sublime carries the carbon paper and the stablizer too.

I'm working on my first patch, but not sure I'm sure interpreting the themes correctly.  I took a wild stab at 70's mod theme for this one...
I'm going for a swirly smiling sunshine thingie.

Not sure how much help this will be but in the UK you can purchase 'dressmakers carbon paper' in different colours - white or yellow carbon paper for dark fabrics.

DMC do a pack of four transfer sheets - two yellow, two blue.  I found them on  Nordicneedle.com (http://www.nordicneedle.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=NN&Product_Code=6639) so it might be worth a look.

You can also purchase Hot Iron Transfer Pencils - you draw the design onto paper and then iron the design onto your fabric.  The NordicNeedle company (as above) have a Yellow Iron on Transfer Pencil for dark fabrics.  The excess is then washed out when finished but not all work like this. Be careful with some of these transfer pencils as some are heat set when ironed, so double check before you use.

Hope this helps.  :)

Ok - I've got a question about the grain of fabric.  This is easy enough to find when working with a big piece of fabric but how do you find the grain on small pieces of fabric or off-cuts.  Is it the warp or the weft threads? And which is which?  :-[

I have 2 designs chosen out already. I went to the library yesterday to get them resized with disasterous results. I'm just going to have to go to Kinkos or someplace with decent machines to get the effect I want today. Do you think since there is already some lovely embroidering going on we should start a gallery?

Thank you so much, I have a heat transfer marker in black that i love, it works great, so i will look this weekend for a yellow or white transfer pen.

My home computer has crashed. I'm hoping to use MIL's to upload pics. I have 2 completely finished and #3 is almost done, #4 is in planning and I still need to figure out #5. I'm stealing internet time when and where I can and that is why I haven't been around much  :-[

The sun is stunning! I know its not for me, but I wish it was  :)

I'll be mailing my first 3 on Monday  ;D I have to wash out the pen I use to guide me and wait for them to dry.

My apologies to the partner who was last on my list....I am sorry but I will be late sending your patch. I cut a hole in it this afternoon whilst snipping threads  ::)
In a way it is a blessing as I wasn't 100% happy with it, but it does mean you'll have to wait a while longer.
SORRY  :-*
